Book Description
The objective of this book is the systematic study of the ring of all real valued continuous functions on arbitrary topological spaces. Great emphasis is placed on the study of ideals, and on the associated residue class rings. Questions of extending continuous functions from a subspace to the entire space arise as a necessary adjunct and are dealt with in considerable detail. Many problems provide additional information about the material covered in the text.

Customer Reviews:
Echoing first reviewer.......2005-12-02
For starters, it's a mix of "very short stories" and "very short excerpts" from longer works (such as "Winesburg, Ohio"). Personally I find that when you get samplings of long works served to you in this way, you lose the larger context that surrounds the piece.
The exercises are disappointing - it's just a list of single sentences prompts for writing about common life events. "Write about an argument," "write about going to college, either deciding to go or not go."
Most of the stories feature commentary at the end of each one, but it's not doled out evenly for each story. It's a mixed bag of literary cricism and/or author insight that may be a little or a lot, depending on the story.
The stories themselves are laid out alphabetically by author with a second table of contents where they're grouped by things like voice, point of view, etc.
I was looking for very short stories with more discussion on techniques and concepts specific to short-shorts. It's more like a literary sampler with a side of literary criticism and a dash of instruction.
A pleasant surprise........2005-07-24
This was a required text for a college course. It has been like visiting old friends. The "classic" authors and others I'd never heard of provide a very good read, and the insights into writing by some of the authors is helpful.
More than Expected.......2004-11-11
While looking for an anthology of short stories, I came across this "textbook" and the most diverse assortment of short story writers I have ever seen. For those who appreciate the poetry of judicious prose this is a find.
Also liked the sections categorizing voice, point-of-view, and setting. Great technical examples that show rather than tell you the differences. Bought it, kept it, still using it, and now even recommending it. Respectful creative writing that will help keep the genre thriving.
Save your money.......2004-10-17
If you are looking for tips to improve your writing, look elsewhere.
The 'instructions' could all fit on one page and consist of such helpful hints as "choose your voice, point of view, and setting...the choice is entirely up to you". "Write a rough draft..." "Edit your draft for logic, clarity, and plausibility." "Continually read excellent fiction."
The section of exercises is simply a list of 20 topics with this instruction: "Write a very short story about one of the following:"
The glossary is less than two pages long and has no examples.
I was expecting each story to have an introduction that told me why it is a masterpiece and what to look for. There is an index of stories by voice, point of view and setting. Those are fairly obvious.
Another sad lesson in not judging a book by its cover.
Book Description
This volume is the only existing biography of one of America's greatest and most influential cartoonists. Winsor McCay (1867-1934) is universally acknowledged as the first master of both the comic strip and the animated cartoon. Although invented by others, both genres were developed into enduring popular art of the highest imagination through McCay's innovative genius. Originally published in 1987, it is now back in print in a newly expanded and revised edition on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Little Nemo in Slumberland. Included are new materials found since the previous publication of the book such as new comic strips of Little Nemo in Slumberland, and new sketches of Gertie the Dinosaur
In the book the author reviews and fully analyzes McCay's achievements in print and film while examining his work in relation to his life, family, and to American culture and values of the period. This painstakingly thorough biography begins with McCay's childhood in Michigan to his seat as one of the greatest of the early animators.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book.......2006-02-23
If you don't know McCay's work, check out "Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend" and "Little Nemo in Slumberland" (not the movie). His art was visually compelling and psychologically savvy. Nemo was the more elaborate, with plenty of grand vistas and architectural wonders while Rarebit was visually spare, but more adult in content. All his work has a marvelously surreal sense about it, heightened by the detailed realism of his style - characters exit the confines of the strip or discuss the cartoonist's failings with the reader, landscapes and characters metamorphose into new configurations in ways that are perhaps best described as psychedelic.
This book presents a biography of this strange and gentle man as well as a generous sampling of his better work, including more obscure feaures and his stunning editorial cartoons (more sweeping panoramas and vast architectural wonders). Also recommended is the Fantagraphics volume "Daydreams and Nightmares" which offers up another good cross-section of his work (except Nemo, which is collected elsewhere).
A true American original, it's a shame more people don't know and appreciate his work.
Great framing of McCay's work and life.......2005-12-05
It amazes me how little information and awareness there is of Windsor McCay and his work now when he was so well known during his lifetime. While thanks to the DVD collection of animation and the recently self-published (and now sold out) large scale book of Little Nemo strips, Little Nemo in Slumberland - So Many Splendid Sundays, more people are discovering him. All contemporary cartoonist are greatly indebted to him. John Canemaker has thankfully republished and updated the only biography of McCay.
Throughout the book there are rare photographs, posters and excellent reproductions of his Sunday comics pages. Canemaker does an excellent job of setting the context under which McCay traveled through his life and created his art. While the book does an excellent job of illuminating McCay's surroundings and events in his life it is unfortunately is not able to cast much light on the man himself. For whatever reasons Canemaker cannot or will not go out on a limb to discuss interior motives and thoughts of McCay. l finished the book knowing a lot about McCay's work but very little about what made him tick. With access to personal letters and other items of the estate I was hoping for more. Why did he allow Hurst to relegate him to an editorial cartoonist and give up his strips? How did he feel about it?
If fleshing out the character of McCay is the book's weak point, it's strength is the discussion of McCay's work. Canemaker pulls on his impressive knowledge of not only McCay's work but the history of comics and animation to provide some truly insightful commentary. His sometimes panel-by-panel discussion of some of McCay's more striking work was a pleasure to read and at times like taking a course on comic appreciation.
If you're looking for a riveting character biography, look elsewhere. But if your looking to find out more about Windsor McCay's contributions to comics and animation this volume is an excellent resourse.
An in-depth look at one of America's premier Cartoonists.......1998-12-07
A debt of gratitude is owed to John Cannemaker for his comprehensive book on Winsor McCay, and his many artistic endeavors. McCay, whose vivid perception has inspired artists and animators for decades, is captured in this exhaustive study. A rich range of his art complements many personal photos of McCay and his family, most notably perhaps, his son Robert, who was the inspiration for Little Nemo.

Very Good Book.......2002-01-15
For some strange reason I want to give this one 4&1/2 stars although I can find no faults with it. The book perhaps could be called "The Rise of T.R. & the G.W. Fleet". Actually I think I may be confused as I think I read the "Rise of T.R." at the same time and now have a hard time remembering each book separately. Anyhow it's a good book and gives a good overview of naval considerations from 1880 to 1900 as well as telling the story about the 1898 war w/ Spain. It doesn't go into extreme depth but then it's only 200 pp or so.
Excellent account of the rebirth of the US Navy under TR.......1999-01-08
Wimmel has put together an impressive account of the rebirth of the US Navy under the guidance of Teddy Roosevelt. No other US president before or since has had such an impact on the Navy and its role in US foreign policy. Wimmel charts the course from the depths of naval ruin in 1880 (when Peru had a bigger Naval presence then the US) until the capstone adventure of the world tour of the 16 battleships composing the Great White Fleet in 1907. While I do find that Wimmel story line occasionally wanders, he has a habit of bring you right back on track. It is a story full of TR and the men who helped him shape the Navy (Sims, Mahan, Long et all). An amazing story about an amazing future and then serving US President. This is also a very readable work that saves the scholarly details for the appendix, a good source of further study in its own right peppered with comments by the author on those sources. A must for TR buffs and Navy fans alike.
Readable and enjoyable account of naval history ........1998-10-27
Wimmel's "Great White Fleet" reveals a little-known facet of Theodore Roosevelt's unmatched influence on American history. Well researched, this account of the USA struggle to become a viable sea power is a surprising history lesson.
Not surprising is Kenneth Wimmel's ability to present facts in a refreshing, clear, but always interesting manner. This book will not disappoint those who have enjoyed "The Alluring Target", Mr. Wimmel's first book.

As inspiring as it is important.......2005-11-22
A wonderful collection of philosophical essays written within the Continental tradition, with an emphasis on phenomenology. Much of the work being done in Environmental Ethics today is often bogged down in either useless theorizing about anthropocentric v.s. ecocentric viewpoints or an overemphasis on specific issues such as animal rights, which often overshadows the most pressing challenges facing environmental thinkers. By refocusing the discussion on the essence of nature, or rather, the Being of Nature, the writers in this book are attempting to remind us of the true importance and value of nature, unveiling nature as something wonderful, something beautiful, and most importantly, something sacred. These essays offer some of the most exciting work being done in environmental philosophy today and also reveal the crucial role phenomenology is bound to play in any holistic philosophy of nature.
