Covers more of Florida than competing guides.......2000-04-12
The most useful aspect of the Fodor's Guide for Miamai and the Keys when compared to other guidebooks is that this book covers the areas north of Miami, all the way up the Atlantic coast to Sebastian. My past few trips to Florida have been to Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach and Vero Beach as well as Miami and the Keys. It's nice to have the basic information in one place.
However, I always feel that Fodor's guidebooks tend to be a little superficial. The last five or six I've read haven't included the hotels I've stayed at (for example a Hyatt that has been open for at least ten years). I also don't care for the type of paper stock that Fodors uses. I like to take a highlighter to my guidebooks and you can't use them on this paper because it bleeds through the pages. I will continue my quest for the perfect guidebook!
great itineraries.......1999-06-05
Great places to stay in Key West. Never disappointed...however, it forgot to mention the great cuban coffee, cafe con leche, that Frommer's went into detail with and had mentioned as a must have. Great restaurant's, esp. the cuban ones.
Book Description
Rich in both civilized luxury and natural beauty, Florida's Gold Coast and the Keys welcome travelers of all tastes and budgets. Includes 2004 post-hurricane updates.
Organized geographically from north to south (from Palm Beach to Key West), this new guide looks beyond the obvious attractions of this spectacular region and gives even the short-term visitor the chance to see the unique, off-beat side of Florida. Author Trish Riley has scoured the area for its legendary chefs and local harvests, independent inns and B&Bs, boutique hotels, historic downtown districts, luxurious shopping areas, and well-known and not-so-well-known beaches.
As in each Great Destinations series guidebook, you'll find important contact information for lodging, dining, shopping, and recreational activities, transportation details, a calendar of events, special "If Time Is Short" options, local history, many photos and maps, and essential information for residents. Find out why the Great Destinations series is "consistently rated the best guides to the regions covered. Readable, tasteful, appealingly designed. Strong on dining, lodging, culture, and history." -National Geographic Traveler. 60 black & white photographs, 10 maps, index.

Book Description
London is poised on the brink of World War 11. Timid, scrawny Willie Beech -- the abused child of a single mother -- is evacuated to the English countryside. At first, he is terrified of everything, of the country sounds and sights, even of Mr. Tom, the gruff, kindly old man who has taken him in. But gradually Willie forgets the hate and despair of his past. He learns to love a world he never knew existed, a world of friendship and affection in which harsh words and daily beatings have no place. Then a telegram comes. Willie must return to his mother in London. When weeks pass by with no word from Willie, Mr. Tom sets out for London to look for the young boy he has come to love as a son.
Customer Reviews:
powerful story about family.......2007-07-11
Timid, scrawny, Willie Beech is the abused child of a single mother. She sends him to Mr. Tom, who lives in the English countryside, because London is being bombed by the Nazis.
The two main adults in this story, the mother and Mr. Tom, seem very similar in the beginning. Yet, by the end, we see that they are completely different. What really hit home was this: hard times can make hard people, but one's true colors shine through when faced with others in need.
Mr. Tom's gruff exterior is only his exterior. He's really got a warm heart, which he opens up to Willie and shows him the love that's supposed to be in a family.
The mother's quiet, strict exterior masks her bitter, mean nature. She has no love for her children, and abuses them in subtle, neglectful ways.
We don't actually see the abuse, we see the end result...which, in my opinion, is far more powerful. I cried for Willie at the end of this book, and cheered Mr. Tom for doing everything he could to save this poor boy. When children are old enough to understand the results of abuse, every family should read this book.
Amazing Stuff.......2007-03-18
I decided to read this book for seventh grade accellerated reader. This great piece of literature has quickly become one of my all time favorite books. I'm very hard to please when it comes to books. When you read this, you become so attached to every last character. It is truly amazing.
Good Night Mr. Tom.......2006-11-08
I thought that this book was a very good book to read. I thought that it gave a lot of details and it was very interesting and exciting. This book was sort of hard to understand because Mr. Tom said different words funny. I really liked the part where Mr. Tom went over to London to try to find Will at his house. I also liked the part where Will was taken from his hospital bed and brought back to Mr. Tom's home. The ending left me hanging because at the end he said Dad I'm growing. I would give this book about five stars.
A Great Book for Realistic Fiction Lovers!.......2006-10-07
Willie (Will) Beech, the likable main character in "Good Night, Mr. Tom", is a shy, scared, malnourished 8-year-old evacuated to the English countryside from London in World War II. Willie goes to live with a kind older man, Tom Oakley, whom Willie affectionately calls Mr. Tom. Willie, who was frequently abused by his mother in the past, learns new, loving ways of life while in the care of Tom. He grows both physically and emotionally during his stay, but many times this growth is interrupted by thrilling plot-twists.
Though "Good Night, Mr. Tom" is heart-warming and most definitely a page-turner, there are parts that are quite graphic, and others that are remarkably sad. I would not recommend it to those who prefer stories that are entirely happy, or to those who cannot tolerate gore. However, I would definitely recommend "Good Night, Mr. Tom" to anyone else.
USEFUL INFORMATION: Since the story is set in England, (the English countryside, more specifically), the author writes each word exactly as the characters would say it. This dialect can be a bit confusing, but it's not too hard to comprehend.
A real tear jerker, but a great book........2006-07-13
My son had to pick a book from a long list to read over the summer for school. After reading the reviews for this book, we chose it. It was a very touching story, sad in places and happy in others. You really are cheering for Will and Mr. Tom. The author uses colloquial accents of rural England, but you really get used to it. My son is reading the book now and isn't having a problem understanding what the characters are saying. He is also enjoying the book a great deal, and having a hard time putting it down.

Internet Business Models and Strategies: Text and Cases
ASIN: 0124499775 |
Book Description
E-business occurs when a company has established critical business procedures and activities to support e-commerce transactions. Using this definition, e-commerce is part of e-business--a company needs e-commerce to implement e-business. Utilizing e-commerce, however, does not mean that a company has transformed into an e-business. E-business is implemented only when a company changes its internal procedures to take advantage of the e-commerce technologies.
Interest in the evolution ("e-volution") of e-commerce into e-business is a growth field. With the early November announcement that GM and Ford were forming online marketplaces for their suppliers, they placed themselves at the center of new e-business ecosystems that will transform their entire way of doing business. Many firms are increasingly discovering opportunities to move away from simply selling products on the Internet to being able to reinvent their conventional supply chains (as in the auto makers' case) and to being able to offer custom-built products (as Dell Computers does now).
Key Features
* Implement e-business in 13 specific proven actions
* Implement e-business with reduced risk to your business
* Coordinate e-business implementation with current business
* Use e-business as a means to renew and improve your current business
* Motivate employees to participate in e-business
* Achieve more flexible business processes
* Deal with technical, vendor, process, and other e-business issues
Answers Questions Such as:
* How do you implement e-business without tearing up your company?
* How do you define your new e-business processes and synchronize them with your current business?
* How and with what do you manage outsourcing in e-business?
* How do you measure your e-business implementation and results?
* How do you change your organization to be a spearhead for e-business?
* What is the best way to develop your e-business implementation strategy?
* How do you quickly gather data on the competition and your current business?
* How do you design new business activities that modify your current processes and define e-business?
Customer Reviews:
e-business on a reasonable scale.......2000-12-18
Rather than portray e-business as a huge effort that will consume everything and will transform the world, this is a solid book on getting down to the nuts and bolts of real world. If most e-business books are geared to business suits and theories, this book is down to working uniforms and getting things done without a lot of people or time. It does not assume that you have some fancy systems or technology or that you are a big company with hundreds of IT people. It can fit start up firms and small firms as well. The book provides a detailed roadmap and tells you how to deal with the pitfalls that you will find along the way. The extensive experience of the authors in doing e-business really shows in this book in the issues, lessons learned, and examples. In using the book we have already used 40 of the guidelines and run across over twenty issues. If you want to do e-business, buy this book. If you want theory and vague concepts go elsewhere.
Deals with real implementation.......2000-11-04
One thing that I liked about the book was the analysis of specific issues across an entire part of the book. There is a chapter on outsourcing as well. The steps in the book can be carried out in parallel. We have been using the book to lay out our project. The book really gets into business and politics as well as technical issues. The book points out that e-business is a program not a project. Commitment from the bottom of the organization is as important as upper management support. This is an important point that the book makes. Another thing--the book does not assume that you have an ERP. A company used the method that had an ERP and found it very useful, however. The book contains little of the "chain" and business model jargon--thankfully. As an example of common sense, the book suggests that you keep searching for the answer to the question "What is success?" This turns out to be critical in e-business since you gain a better understanding as you work your way through installing e-business. The examples and lessons learned in the book are of real use. They are detailed and specific. We have found that there are also good hints on how to manage vendors and consultants and what the roles of consultants and business departments should be. Overall, an excellent read.
excellent step by step approach for e-commerce.......2000-10-18
I must have purchased 10 different e-commerce books. Typically, they have concepts and buzzwords, but are short on how to implement e-commerce. This is one of the few books that really deal with putting in e-commerce. It gives excellent details about how to implement--from creating a strategy to expanding your site. A best buy.
good method for e-commerce implementation.......2000-09-20
Our firm employed this method to implement business to business e-commerce. It really works. We had tried another approach before which did not work. Some benefits of the method are that it encourages a group approach to implementation. It also provides a way to address political issues which we have many of. I found the book very readable and useful. We are now using the book as the basis for doing intranets within our firm. Chapter 2 presents the idea of a project concept. This is valuable in getting consensus on the scope of the work. Chapter 6 is one of the better ways to understand technology without getting into too much detail. Fitting e-commerce into normal business is important and often not covered in other books. It is covered well in chapter 9. Perhaps, one of the most useful chapters is 12. That is where the implementation strategy is developed. This was a turning point in our effort. You can plan all day, but if you do not have a solid approach for putting e-commerce in, you are going to be in trouble. The book also addresses how to use suppliers in a pilot effort to get other suppliers involved-very useful in political terms. Marketing of e-commerce internally and with suppliers is not given much attention. Here an entire chapter is devoted to it. E-commerce is more complex than most people think. This book provides one of the most useful step by step methods.

Book Description
The book studies boundary value problems connected with geometric singularities and models of the crack theory. New and interesting phenomena on the behaviour of solutions (regularity in weighted spaces, asymptotics) are analysed by means of parametrices obtained by inverting corresponding scalar and operator-valued symbols. Compared with other expositions in the field of crack theory and analysis on configurations with singularities the present book systematically develops for the first time an approach in terms of algebras of (pseudo-differential) boundary value problems. The calculus is decomposed into a number of simpler structures, namely boundary value problems (Chapter 1) and edge problems near the crack boundary (Chapter 4). Necessary tools on parameter-dependent cone operators (Chapter 2) and operators on spaces with conical exits to infinity (Chapter 3) are developed as theories of independent interest. The crack theory (Chapter 5) then appears as an application of the edge calculus.
The book is addressed to mathematicians and physicists interested in boundary value problems, geometric singularities, asymptotic analysis, as well as to specialists in the field of crack theory and other singular models.

Book Description
The study of singularities and oscillations of waves has progressed along several fronts. A key common feature is the presence of a small scale in the solutions. Recent emphasis has been on nonlinear waves. Nonlinear problems are generally less amenable than linear problems to broad unified approaches. As a result there is a justifiable tendency to concentrate on problems of particular geometric or physical interest. This volume contains a multiplicity of approaches brought to bear on problems varying from the formation of caustics and the propagation of waves at a boundary to the examination of viscous boundary layers. There is an examination of the foundations of the theory of high- frequency electromagnetic waves in a dielectric or semiconducting medium. Unifying themes are not entirely absent from nonlinear analysis. One chapter in the volume considers microlocal analysis, including paradifferential operator calculus, on Morrey spaces, and connections with various classes of partial differential equations.

Book Description
The theory of singularities lies at the crossroads between those branches of mathematics which are the most abstract and those which are the most applied. Algebraic and differential geometry and topology, commutative algebra and group theory are as intimately connected to singularity theory as are dynamical systems theory, control theory, differential equations, quantum mechanical and quasi-classical asymptotics, optics, and functional analysis.
This collection of papers incorporates recent results of participants in the editor's ongoing seminar in singularity theory, held in the Mechanics and Mathematics Department of Moscow University for over twenty years. With its broad range of subject matter, this volume will appeal to a wide range of readers in various areas of the mathematical sciences. Among the topics covered are: construction of new knot invariants, stable cohomology of complementary spaces to diffusion diagrams, topological properties of spaces of Legendre maps, application of Weierstrass bifurcation points in projective curve flattenings, classification of singularities of projective surfaces with boundary, nonsmoothness of visible contours of smooth convex hypersurfaces, flag manifolds, hyperbolic partial differential systems, and control theory.

Book Description
Capturing the Napoleonic period's most politically outspoken woman, this edition of Dix Années d'Exil is the powerful memoir of Germaine de Staël's tumultuous flight across Europe just ahead of Napoleon's army. Translated by an award-winning scholar, Ten Years of Exile is the only unabridged English edition of this strong-minded and passionate woman's personal and political journal.
During the French Revolution, Mme. de Staël's salon became a brilliant center of political and intellectual life. Staël herself helped to introduce Napoleon to French society, yet like other liberals in the Constitutional Club, she soon came to oppose the increasingly powerful general. He in turn banished her from Paris in 1803 for her liberal ideas.
In exile, Staël continued to agitate against the new master of France. After Napoleon's defeat, Staël returned to Paris and again received ministers, generals, and sovereigns in her revived salon. Her memoir provides penetrating insights into the society of Napoleonic Europe and vivid portraits of the leading figures of the age, including the emperor himself.
Book Description
The production which is now submitted to the reader is not a complete work and ought not to be criticized as such. It consists of Fragments of her Memoirs which my mother had intended to complete at her leisure and which would have probably undergone alterations of the nature of which I am ignorant if a longer life had been allowed her to revise and finish them.
