Book Description
Steven's a 16-year-old boy with two obsessions: sex and getting his driving license. The problem is, Steven's not thinking girls when he's thinking sex. Could he be -- don't say it -- gay? Steven sets out to get in touch with his inner he-man with Healthy Heterosexual Strategies such as "Start Hanging Out with the Guys," and "Begin Intensive Dating." But are Steven's tactics going to straighten him out, or leave him all twisted up?Absolutely hilarious. Positively sidesplitting. But absolutely, positively NOT GAY!
Customer Reviews:
I've been absolutely positively captured by David LaRochelle.......2007-07-03
I sat in a writing session with David at a Young Authors Conference in the Spring of 2007. I was so impressed with his ablility to communicate effective ways of using humor to convey important ideas to youth, that I immediately purchased his book Absolutely Positively Not. I read it in one sitting, being absolutely positively captured by his graceful and naturally funny treatment of a certain young man's coming of age story. As an educator, I highly recommend this book to both youth and adults alike. David's perspective is priceless.
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY A WINNER!.......2007-06-26
ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NOT...is a totally entertaining book. There are probably few in our community who cannot relate to the angst of Steven, the books "hero"; and indeed, he ultimately proves to be just that. Light hearted, crisply written, honest, and compassionate; the books whisks the reader through the awakening and outing of a teenager who tries very hard to be "straight", but just isn't wired that way. A fun read!
For A Light and Enjoyable Read.......2007-02-01
If your looking to just sit back, relax, and unwind for an evening, this is the book for you.
Charming.......2006-06-02
A lot gay-oriented young adult lit today can be overly sexual (not a bad thing but also one that seems to promise more for a kid's reality than it can deliver), or depend too much on fantasy (gay kid finds out hot, sexy number one school jock is gay and they fall in love), can be didactic (teens giving speeches that I, on my best and most lucid day, could never deliver off the cuff) or just poorly written. Granted, Young Adults don't need books to be structured like a Henry James novel, but poor dialogue and character development can make me groan and I don't think anybody is done any favors when a publishing house rushes out a mess of a novel just to catch a trend.
Thankfully for us, "Absolutely, Positively Not ..." (APN) is a fun, light, well-written entry into the genre that's readable and completely charming. Sure, some of the book can have some situations that some see as sitcomish but you have to admit, they're cute. There are just as many funny, original moments in the book that previous reviewers ignored. I think my favorite moment in APN involves ice fishing and an wildly enthusiastic response when he thinks he's won a pickup truck only to really have won ... I won't give it away. That moment encapsulates the theme of the book and Steven's world, of misperceptions and reality.
The best thing about APN is that it's hopeful. APN doesn't perpetuate the myth that you come out and suddenly you're dating and everything's okay. It's a step by step process and Steven's just beginning to take the journey. Many of the best Young Adult novels are those that don't wrap everything up in a neat bow and allow for the reader to make their own decisions as to what happens next. I'm glad I happened to find this book and hope more people discover it from themselves.
Likable narrator stuck in sitcom situations.......2006-05-10
I agree with others who've reviewed this title that the narrator, Steven, is very likable. He's upbeat, even when he's nervous or angry, which is a trait that separates him from other gay characters in many novels. Unfortunately, I found the situations he found himself in -- like dating 24 girls in one month, having a sexy schoolmate throw herself at him, and accidentally starting a new fashion craze at his school -- to be standard-issue sitcom material. Most situations end at the close of each chapter, just like at the end of a TV episode.
The story shows promise in the beginning when Steven describes his attraction to square-dancing: he likes that there is no confusion about what to do. That sentiment seemed so straightforward and heartfelt that I wanted to know more about it and see Steven enjoying it regularly. Instead, the square-dancing group becomes another situation for humor based on deception (a fellow dancer wants to fix Steven up with her grand-daughter and Steven must come up with an excuse not to meet her).
With other good novels covering the teenage coming out process with humor AND depth (like "Blackbird" by Larry Depluchan and "Eight Seconds" by Jean Ferris), I'm afraid I just can't recommend this one.
Book Description
Now available in paperback, this book has been updated to include more humorous, entertaining myths that keep the rumor mills churning. Richard Roeper, the current co-host of Ebert & Roeper and the Movies, knows a lot about urban legends-tales so deliciously tasty that you desperately want it to be true.
Find out:
Does the "bonsai kitten" Web site celebrate cruelty to animals -- or is it just a tasteless joke?
What's the real story behind the so-called Ivy League porn film supposedly in production at Yale?
Could it really be true that a man named George Turklebaum dropped dead at his desk-and none of his co-workers noticed for five days?
Each of these stories and hundreds more like them have been told and retold, embellished and reworked. They're fun to hear or read, and even more fun to retell. They're part of our contemporary folklore.
Customer Reviews:
a good, light read.......2006-01-30
It is hard to review a book like this...or is it easy? The book is a collection of modern urban legends and the truth (or untruth) behind them. I guess you could criticize his selection of legends to cover, but that is more a personal choice. The truth is, Roeper does a solid job of reviewing the legend in question and then delving into the story behind it.
It succeeds exactly where it intends to succeed. It is a light-hearted, entertaining book. This is a book you can read 10 minutes at a time and always come away entertained.
Perfect for teens.......2004-10-10
"Urban Legends" by Richard Roeper is a light read perfect for a teen audience. This book touches on most of the common urban legends, the welcome to the world of AIDS urban legend, whether Tupac is really dead, Tommy Hilfiger on Oprah and other urban legends that have been rehashed over time. The book dispells what is truth and what is fiction. Overall though this book doesn't really tell readers what can't be found on the Internet or in other books. It's an entertaining book.
History Is Myth....Or....?.......2003-05-03
In this book there are many of those Urban Legends that we've heard of that have been circulating since we can remember. And, there are also many tales that we haven't heard of. Today we get most of these myths via email, but before email came to be, I remember hearing...."this happened....I heard that....so-and-so said....did you know that....?" And beyond the humor, are the effects these tall-tales can have on the people and places they're about. Many of these "alleged" rumors were followed up in the form of questions from journalists during media interviews. Often, the media will investigate a rumor (urban myth) to see if there is any merit to it. Once debunked as false however, the rumor lives on in peoples' minds.
HIV positive Hyperdermic needles left in the coin returns of pay phones. Those unfortunate people who went out on the town to wake up in hotel bathtub filled with ice, and a note left to call the Doctor because their Kidney had been removed. And what's to that gerbil rumor involving a celebrity we all know? Well, that's false too. That particular myth has been tagged on other celebrities going back to the 70s.
Who started these tales? When? How did they get spread?
In addition to listing and describing these interesting myths, Roeper notes of the origins, means and methods of their growth, and the current believability status of many of them. Good coffee table book. It'll occupy some of the folks you'll bring over.
Pretty good book, a fun and easy read!.......2002-11-19
This book takes a lot of urban legends, some I had heard, some I had not, and proves them wrong. The author sites his research, so you know that it was actually investigated.
This book sort of takes the fun out of some urban legends, but a lot of them, that you just knew couldn't be true, are proved to be false. So from now on, when my friends send me all these crazy emails, I can tell them they are a hoax and actually have a source.
Too many entertainment-world rumors.......2002-08-12
"Urban Legends" is entertaining but ultimately tedious, with far too much focus on celebrity gossip and rumors. For example, three pages are devoted to the fascinating question of who the "You" is in Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know." The author offers his own speculation, and we are treated to ruminations by fans and Internet posters, but we are left in the dark as to why this merits a place in a book on urban legends. Maybe there are urban legends that explain why popular musicians like Phil Collins and the members of Pink Floyd are regarded as geniuses in the journalistic world, on the Internet, and wherever else high school lives forever. Two and a half stars for an excellent selection of Internet, campus, and computer-tech legends, not to mention a badly-needed expose of the deathless "Bozo No-No" legend. (I was told this had happened on local television in Toledo, Ohio. Not.) Minus the same amount for the remaining fluff.

Book Description
When a species colonizes an area that it has not previously inhabited, it is called an "invasion", and it can result in the extinction of endemic species. The increase in numbers of humans travelling the world presents opportunities for invasions by organisms and the spread of diseases such as
rabies and smallpox. Using the large amount of data from studies in pest control and epidemiology, it is possible to construct mathematical models that can predict which species will become invaders, which habitats are susceptible to invasion, and the biological impact. This book presents a clear
and accessible introduction to the modeling of biological invasions. It demonstrates the latest theories and models, and includes data and examples from various case studies showing how these models can be applied to problems from deadly human diseases to the spread of weeds.

The Chemistry of Organic Arsenic, Antimony and Bismuth Compo.......2000-03-24
The book is an excellent book for both specialist and non-specialists. Complex equations are explained in simple language. Throughout the book, the motivation to read on is clearly there as the authors lead one from one compound to another, using their style of breaking complex ideas into simpler ones and explaining them one by one. A great book for anyone who wants to know more about the Arsenic, Antimony and Bismuth Compounds. I won't tell you all but buy one and have that exciting experience of reading this great book yourself.

Book Description
A common theme within this section (Si, Ge and Sn), is the use of bulky groups to stabilize species which are otherwise unknown. This includes the divalent species R
2M, the trivalent radicals R
3M
0, and the multiply-bonded compounds R
2M=MR
2, R
2M=CR
2, etc. A significant difference from
COMC is the much greater availability of single crystal x-ray diffraction and this is covered. Other important developments covered include, silicone polymers derived from carbofunctional silanes and the developments in polysilane high polymers. The Sn chapter covers the biggest development, the use of organotin compounds in organic synthesis, and this chapter provides the background information.

Book Description
The purpose of A Practical Approach to Robustness Analysis with Aeronautical Applications is twofold. First, it is to introduce as clearly as possible the mu framework, while the second is to emphasize its practical usefulness. To this aim, classical and advanced mu tools are first presented, then applied to a range of engineering problems, namely a missile, a large rigid or flexible transport aircraft and a highly flexible telescope mock-up.
Book Description
This world is ruled by publicitary language and by the insidious ellipsis that obstruct communication and hide reality. This is a parody about those polluted languages, a novel that's a mirror of Puerto Rico and Latin America, the colonized.
Customer Reviews:
DEFINITIVAMENTE PEGAJOSA.......2002-06-20
lA GUARACHA ES UNA NOVELA CON LA CUAL CUALQUIER PUERTORRIQUENO PUEDE IDENTIFICARSE, AUNQUE CUALQUIER PERSONA ENCONTRARA QUE LAS MISMAS SITUACIONES PUEDEN PASAR EN TODOS LADOS. EN UNA FORMA MUY HUMORISTICA, COMO AN FORMA DE PARODIA, PRESENTA LA REALIDAD DEL PUERTO RICO DIA A DIA, CON SUS VIRTUDES Y DEFECTOS EN UN TONO MUSICAL: LA GUARACHA QUE TODOS CONOCEN. ES UNA NOVELA DIVERTIDA Y HASTA COMICA, PERO MUY REAL.
Tremenda novela.......2001-09-21
Brillante.
