A handy guide you can carry in your daypack.......2001-03-07
The book describes 312 species of flowering plants, chosen from among about 2000 species of flowering plants native to a region that "includes the western parts of Minnesota and Iowa, all of North Dakota and South Dakota and Nebraska and the eastern parts of Montana and Wyoming." In other words, it's a guide to the most prominent flowering plants in the large geographic sector called the Grassland Province, which is a wide north-south belt of grasssland extending from Alberta and Saskatchewan south to Texas.
The books presents a color picture, usually about 2-inches by 2-inches square, for each species. It also gives the common name and scientific name, as well as a paragraph of the most important information about each species.
A particularly useful feature is that the book is divided into separate sections for grasses and ferns, yellow flowers, white flowers, red flowers and blue flowers. So, if you find a plant whose name you don't know, all you have to do is whizz to the section for flowers of that color. And there you are, unless it's a rare plant.
There's a good index and a small but useful bibliography.
Excellent companion for wildflower walks in the high plains.......1999-05-14
The latest edition of l992 is an excellent companion for wildflower and grass identification on the high plains of Montana. The photos, descriptions, text and organization make it easy to use for the amateur wildflower enthusiast.

and of course, don't talk to strangers..........2004-10-02
when i went back to review this and saw that no one had yet reviewed it, i asked myself, "why did i buy this book?" why indeed. the only interesting thing about this book is that they managed to fill up so many pages with tired platitudes and ridiculous advice. if you have absolutely no common sense, and feel the need to read instruction manuals for basic household appliances, then this travel book is for you. the tips they offer include such gems as:
don't go white-water rafting in a leaky raft
don't go out alone late at night in dangerous neighborhoods
don't drink and bungee jump
along with tips that are completely oblivious to the realities of travel, such as: only ride on buses if you have a working seat belt. how about this advice: don't make yourself an ass-kicking target by whining to your nicaraguan bus driver about the condition of his converted school bus.
the real question is: who are these people and how did they get a book contract? and it's not like there is good advice interspersed with the oblivious and/or absurdly obvious commentary. although there are some (unintentionally) funny points: the second tip on what not to bring is -- and i'm not joking -- fake id cards that say "secret agent" or "secret service." swear to god, that is in the book - and it's the number two tip.
don't bring your fake secret agent card into foreign countries.
y'know, now that i think about it, maybe that is the target audience for this book - people who have fake secret agent cards in their wallet.
if i ever meet these authors, and they don't give me my money back, i might try using the attack advice they offer for muggers - kick them in the shins. yes, this is also true - they advise people to do this, claiming it will incapacitate any attacker. yeah, provided that you only travel in the country of Delicateania.
well, i've wasted enough of my life on this piece of junk. don't say you weren't forewarned. and remember, don't go skydiving in brazil without a parachute.

Daughters of the Moon: Possession-Book#8; By: Lynne Ewing.......2005-02-14
Payasa
Possession was an AWSOME book, like all of the other Daughter of the Moon books! It was about a girl named Serena who can read minds. All of her friends have powers too. She was running away from Jerome, a boy who has a total crush on Serena, but she tottaly hates him, and she bumps into this old lady who gives her some potion stuff. She wakes up hours later and walks home, but a black Lexus follows her. She went to sleep with an awful headache. She wakes up to find herself in the kitchen with words writen in her own blood'"YOU'RE NOT ALONE ANYMORE". Her friend, Catty's, mom invited them to read the future in a coffee cup, and she saw snakes, which means "an enemy has come to visit". Serena gets spaces in time where she can't remember anything. She starts to get really freaked. She finds the old woman and she is able to undo the curse by fighting the followers that the old woman is leading along with Lambart. This is a great book and I highly recomend it for readers that have read the rest of the series because it just gets better with every book. For those who haven't read any other books in the series, I recomend it if you like present day fantasy based in Los Angeles.
one of the best books.......2005-01-11
i have read all of the daughter of the moon books several times

i thought this book was amazing ! it was so good but it was also really sad with stanton...i think serena is just so cool and i lyk that she has that dark side which cna keep her with stanton
oooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-10-01
This book was good. We find out in the end that Serena has a 3rd choice, unlike the other Daughters. You have to read the book becasue I am not telling you what it is. This book is also revloving around Serena and Stanton again. Hopefully thought her next one won't be.
this one's REALLY good!.......2004-08-27
I really like the Daughters of the Moon books and i think that this is one of the best ones. My favorite parts are the interactions between Stanton and Serena because they still love one another inspite of everything. That fact really seems to shine through in this book. That's why i give it 5 stars!

Book Description
In an age when advanced molecular and genetic tools allow studies in various systems, amphibian metamorphosis still offers perhaps the most accessible model for the study of postembryonic organogenesis and mechanisms of hormonal regulation during vertebrate development. Amphibian Metamorphosis: From Morphology to Molecular Biology integrates findings from the most recent research with earlier observations, providing molecular and mechanistic insights into the signal transduction pathways underlying tissue-specific transformations during metamorphosis.
The author, renowned expert of anuran metamorphosis and Head of the Unit of Molecular Morphogenesis at NICHD/NIH, begins with an overview of metamorphosis in different classes of amphibians and various factors that influence this process. A review of earlier morphological, cellular, and biochemical changes focuses on organs and tissues that have been studied extensively at the molecular level, while discussion of the thyroid hormone signal transduction pathway emphasizes transcriptional regulation mechanisms by thyroid receptors. The book provides a summary and comparison of gene regulation programs induced by thyroid hormone in several organs that undergo distinct metamorphic transformations. Several chapters are devoted to functional and mechanistic implications of the molecular findings on the thyroid hormone response genes in tissue transformation.
Special features of this book include:
* An emphasis on integrating the morphological approach with molecularand cell biology
* A historical perspective on the progression from discovery of the thyroid hormone to present-day research advances
* Comparisons of amphibian and insect metamorphosis
* Dozens of instructive photographs, several in full color
Amphibian Metamorphosis: From Morphology to Molecular Biology is a unique and invaluable resource for professionals and aspiring professionals in develop-mental biology, molecular biology, cell biology, evolutionary biology, and endocrinology.

Book Description
This second volume of The John McPhee Reader includes material from his eleven books published since 1975, including Coming into the Country, Looking for a Ship, The Control of Nature, and the four books on geology that comprise Annals of the Former World.
Customer Reviews:
Another great collection.......1998-07-07
Not quite as wonderful as the first John McPhee reader. But that may be because the first collection inspired me as I was beginning my career as a reporter. Objectively, the second "Reader" is every bit as inspiring in its lucid, meticulous prose and McPhees ability to convey the details about a person or a place that make them come alive on the page.

Customer Reviews:
Allen Iverson: Fear No One.......2007-02-19
If you like biographies about famous sports people then should read Allen Iverson:Fear No One by John Smallwood.Allen Iverson doesn't have to be your favorite basketball player but if you like basketball you should read it.Read about how he grew up and the challenges he faced. It tells you how he maDe it 2 the NBA. i really like this book and if you like basketballmor A.I.(Allen Iverson)your will definetly like this book.
Allen Iverson Fears No One.......2005-11-01
This is a book a bout a young man who is born into poverty but overcomes all challenges he is faced with. Allen practices all his life and is able to make it to the NBA.This book is great because it tells you about alot of basketball games that Allen played in. The author really gets you into the game it feels like you are in the fans watching the game. There was nothing about this book that I didnt like. A part that I really liked was when Allen said "This was a perfect ending to a day" I liked it because i could get excactly what he was saying. If you love basketball you should get this book as soon as possible!
Allen Iverson: The Feared One.......2005-10-31
If you like sports books then this is the book for you.The book about Allen Iverson tells about a young man who grew up in the flums. He became a great basketball player, and retires and has a great life and family. This book attracted me because there was tons of basketball, and it's always interesting to find out about someone's life from when they grew up in a tough neighborhood. One thing that i didnt like about this book was that it talked to much about his college carrier instead of his more interesting pro carrier. Allen Iverson was obviously my favorite character because of what he had to go through in his though neighborhood with all that violence and drugs and how he stayed away from it and became one of the NBA's greatest players. My favorite line was when Iverson said "This is a great ending to a day!" He said that after he hit the winning buzzer beating shot on page 132. It just made me feel good inside because you know that anything could happen. If you like basketball then you will love this book! One question i have is that why did he do some of those foolish things as a child?I recomend this book to everyone because it teaches that if you try your hardest you can suceed.
Allen Iverson Fear no One.......2004-02-24
This story is about a famous basketball player named Allen Iverson. He was born in Virginia Hampton. He lived in a bad neighborhood where people sold drugs and killed people for no reason.Iverson had two sisters. He was the oldest one. he went to Georgetown when he was in college and was a point guard. In college he was the mvp on his team and is the mvp on his team right now in the NBA.Allen Iverson plays for the Philidelphia Sixers. In the 2001-2002 Allstar game Iverson was the mvp.He led his team to the playoffs and then to the championship to play against the L.a. Lakers who was number one on the western cenference.Although the Sixers lost the championship Allen Iverson and the other players on the Sixers Played a heck of a game. The Lakers were impressed to see how good Allen Iverson was and how a little man like Iverson played with sush a big heart. Even though the Sixers had a chance to win the championship in a long time they still kept there head up and waited until next year.I recomend this book people who like Allen Iverson.
GREAT BOOK!!!!.......2004-01-05
I picked this book up to learn more on "The Answer".
This book is good for kids ages 9-12 years of age.
It is a great book to pick up if you want to know some more of what when on in his younger years.
I think the author could have went into the younger years of Iverson. He mostly focused his writing on his current actions and a couple run ins with th Law.
But other wise I think it is a great book if you are looking to read more about his NBA career and College Career.
But if are looking for more a book where it tells about his childhood I would not tell you to pick this one up.
It is great for kids that want to learn about there favorite Basketball player!!

Decisive Encounters: The Chinese Civil War, 1946-1950
ASIN: 0080366902 |
Book Description
Monthly in cities around the world, bicyclists take over the streets in an "organized coincidence" called Critical Mass. Riding along several hundred strong, hooting and hollering, whistling, laughing and singing; it is a coup on wheels, a clever tactical strike against our oil-dependent culture. Containing writings from participants worldwide, this colorful book bundles together 10 years of legendary debates, photographs, artwork, and life-transforming experiences evolving from the celebratory, visionary revolt on bicycles called Critical Mass.
Chris Carlsson is a founder and editor of the notorious underground magazine, Processed World, and the director of the historical multimedia project, Shaping San Francisco. He was recently awarded the Golden Wheel Award by the San Francisco Bike Coalition for founding Critical Mass in 1992.
Customer Reviews:
Down with global warming, fascist oil wars and corporate globalization!.......2006-03-23
This joyful book should be mandatory reading! Simply put, our county's oil addiction and car culture are destroying our planet, contributing to air pollution, deforestation, urban sprawl, social alienation and war, not to mention roadkill. (Did you know that cars are the number 1 cause of the Florida panther's decline?) While biodiesel should be promoted instead of gas, it really does not alleviate the majority of social ills caused by the vehicle itself, like the atomizing of people inside steel boxes or the clear-cutting of forests to make way for parking lots and strip malls. In contrast, bikes promote community, healthy living, ecological sustainability, anti-capitalism and peace. So, dump your car and hit the streets with your friends and lovers. Enjoy the sunlight on your face, the wind in your hair and the music of birds!
Get a Life.......2002-11-21
[Another reviewer] did not review this book; he is only stating his closed-minded opinion about its content and its message. He has obviuosly never participated in a Critical Mass ride, his uninformed opinion about the people that do participate is just that, and I doubt the time he spends on his bicycle as 'an avid cyclist' occurs anywhere near the crowded streets of a large urban city in America. Although some of the writing in this book is a little rough, as a result of being a collection of many short essays by untrained writers, this book does an excellent job of capturing the spirit and energy of Critical Mass rides throughout the world, through the eyes and words of participants. Think of Critical Mass as the civil rights movement for urban cyclists, who are just plain tired of being threatened and endangered by rude and inconsiderate motorists, discriminated against by politicians, transportation planners, engineers and bureaucrats, the police and the entrenched dinosaur known as American car culture, which strangles and disfigures America's public spaces with noise, pollution, and violent death, and whose ever-increasing consumption of fossil fuel is driving us to war in the Middle East. Critical Mass is urban bicyclists reclaiming America's streets and other public spaces from the stranglehold of the SUV and the automobile in what is probably the largest civil disobedience movement in this country since the southern civil rights movement and the anti-war protests of the l960s. If you won't ride your bicycle in the city because you don't feel safe riding in traffic, read this book, find out the time and location of the nearest Critical Mass ride, get on your bicycle and bring a friend with a bicycle, and reclaim your public streets from the tyranny and hegemony of the automobile.
Critical Mess.......2002-11-18
Being an avid cyclist, I became interested in the phenomenon called Critical Mass after reading Travis Culley's excellent book. Apparently, large groups of cyclists take to the streets, blocking traffic in some type of protest in various cities around the world. This book is a collection of articles about these events written by different authors, many of whom participated in Critical Mass. It will give the reader a insight into why these idiots do this activity, but don't expect anything too profound. Once the reader begins to comprehend what is behind these rallies, the fact will become clear that it is fueled by the usual liberal imbeciles whom are behind most organized protests. There is some humor to be found in the articles and are worth reading, but overall this is a documentary of an activity which is the product of bored liberals, with too much time on their hands. I'm not surprised that San Francisco is a hotbed of this foolishness. I'll bet if one were to investigate, it would be revealed that bike messengers and professional envoirnmentalists are behind this nonsense. Some of the articles in this book are well written, but overall I would not recommend this book for responsible bikers.
