                        INTRODUCTION

Few Mediterranean holiday spots are as often and as unfairly maligned as Mallorca. The largest of the Balearic Islands, an archipelago to the east of the Spanish mainland which also comprises Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera, Mallorca is commonly perceived as little more than sun, sex, booze and high-rise hotels - so much so that there's a long-standing Spanish joke about a mythical fifth Balearic island called "Majorca" (the English spelling) which is inhabited by an estimated eight million tourists a year. However, this image, spawned by the helter-skelter development of the 1960s, takes no account of Mallorca's beguiling diversity.

Until well into the twentieth century, Mallorca was a sleepily agrarian backwater, left behind in the Spanish dash to exploit the Americas from the sixteenth century onwards. Mass tourism has reversed the island's fortunes since World War II, bringing the highest level of disposable income per capita in Spain, but the price has been profound social transformation and the disfigurement of tracts of the coastal landscape. However, the spread of development is surprisingly limited, essentially confined to the Bay of Palma, a thirty-kilometre strip flanking the island capital, and a handful of mega-resorts notching the east coast. Elsewhere, Mallorca is much less developed than many other parts of Spain.

Palma, Mallorca's capital and the Balearics' one real city, is a bustling, historic place whose grandee mansions and magnificent Gothic cathedral defy the expectations of many visitors. To the east of Palma stretches Es Pla, an agricultural plain that fills out the centre of the island, sprinkled with ancient and seldom-visited country towns. On either side of the plain are coastal mountains. In the west and to the north, the rugged Serra de Tramuntana hides beautiful cove beaches, notably Cala de Deià and Platja de Formentor, and deep sheltered valleys. The range is crisscrossed with footpaths and makes for ideal hiking country, particularly in the cooler spring and autumn. Tucked away here too are a string of picturesque villages, such as Orient and Fornalutx, and a pair of intriguing monasteries at Valldemossa and Lluc. The gentler, greener Serres de Llevant shadow the coves of the east coast and culminate in the pine-clad headlands and medieval hill towns of the island's northeast corner. There's a startling variety and physical beauty to the land, which, along with the mildness of the climate, has drawn tourists to visit and well-heeled expatriates to settle here since the nineteenth century, including artists and writers of many descriptions from Robert Graves to Roger McGough.

4 out of 5 stars Good travel book.......2004-10-02

Its not customary for me to address another's review, but I actually find this book very helpful in the times that I have traveled to Mallorca. It is complete with many phone numbers (for ferries, flights, etc) and provides great sections on restaurants and festivals. My only issue with the book is the lack of a historical foundation for the island itself and some more indepth history of the featured monuments.

                        1 out of 5 stars Nearly Useless.......2003-04-10

This is the first and last Rough Guide that I will purchase. One might think that a 272 page book about a fairly small place would be quite thorough. On the contrary, this guide lacked references to some of the best experiences we had on the island. Additionally, the indexing was atrocious (e.g. no entries for boat rental, markets, groceries...I could go on).

I don't know what the other guide books are like but even the worst of them are probably better than this one.

Yukari wants nothing more than to make her parents happy by studying hard and getting into a good college. One afternoon, however, she is kidnapped by a group of self-proclaimed fashion mavens calling themselves "Paradise Kiss." Yukari suddenly finds herself in the roller coaster life of the fashion world, guided by George, art-snob extraordinaire. In a glamorous makeover of body, mind and soul, she is turned from a hapless bookworm into her friends' own exclusive clothing model.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful manga series!.......2006-12-29

I actually watched the anime before the manga. I liked the Anime series quite a bit and ordered all 5 volumes of the manga. If you're homophobic and cannot handle TG characters, don't bother. This manga is heavy on cross-dressing and bi-sexual tendencies. But it's a wonderful, refreshing manga to read with a non-vanilla ending.

5 out of 5 stars Books like this.......2006-10-18

Don't come along everyday. It really seems to transcend the line between manga and a novel. It's beautifully illustrated, and the dialogue between the characters is so real and emotional. I love this series, and I also love the Nana series by Ai Yazawa. Her style is so... picturesque? Emotional?

I find that everytime I pick up one of her works I am spellbound until the last page.

                          4 out of 5 stars Surprised.......2006-01-29

I've never really been into reading Manga but after watching the anime and enjoying, I spotted the manga and bought it on a whim. I was really surprised, it has an interesting story line that differs enough from a large number of the manga's out there which makes good enough to stand out. While it does have the typical romance in it, that isn't the focus, it's about a girl feeling lost, bored and without a focus in her life. She's been doing what her parents want for her entire life and meeting a new group of people exposes her to a side of life that she has never thaught about and captivates her. I'm not going to say anymore so that I don't give anything away.

                          5 out of 5 stars "I thought you were gay, George!" "I'm a bi.".......2005-10-22

I found this manga to be (quote the Tokyopop advertisement) "refreshingly different". Yeah, it's got all the "do I or don't I" romance drama, but hey, Yazawa-sensei isn't making a cliched manga series, here. The story is thus: pretty and smart Yukari wants to add some color to her dull, dull life. She's walking to prep school one day when suddenly, A crazy looking guy (with a safety pin in his lip...) tells her she's "ace" and asks her to be a model for a fashion show. Terrified, Yukari runs away from him, only to be grabbed by Isabella, a giant Drag Queen (who works with the guy from before). She passes out, and when she wakes up, she's in a New York bar-esque place, with the two guys from before and a girl with pink hair looming over her. Again they ask her to be a fashion model, and she says no. As she leaves, she forgets her passbook, and George, the sexy leader of the band of weirdoes (as Yukari calls them)resolves to take it to her and make her be their model, whether she wants to or not! I found myself laughing a lot in this manga, from the hilairious expressions to the even funnier dialogue. The art is beautiful, from the characters realistic bodies and faces, to the even more beautiful clothes. God, where do I begin on the clothes. Gorgeous. If you like this manga, check out Gokinjo Monogatari(neigborhood stories, kind of a prequel to ParaKiss) and Yazawa-sensei's newest series, Nana.(by the way, my totally random title is just one of the conversations in this very funny book).

5 out of 5 stars Reluctant to review ParaKiss:.......2004-03-15

My reason for that is, 30 reviews already for Vol. 1, and I've ONLY read Vol. 1 because where I live EVERY SINGLE book store has been out of ALL the volumes since Christmas, except now they have Vol. 5, like that helps!!!

Despite that, however, I think I can write a helpful review, so here go's.

Paradise Kiss is one of those mangas, or books, that will IMMEDIATELY catch your eye. When I had got a manga sampler book(before I was into manga) for my brother, as a prize from a summer reading club, I read through it as well. There were two mangas that caught my attention: 1. Mars and 2. Paradise Kiss
The reason Paradise Kiss caught my eye was because of the drawing style, it is very unique to Ai Yazawa alone, I've never seen anyone with a style that comes close(and I read a lot of manga, liscenced and unliscenced).

So, finally over a year after reading a sample of ParaKiss and having read countless praises for the series, I got the first Volume for Christmas last year. Since recieving it, I have read it about 5x's(as well as started reading Gokinjo).

Why would I do this? Well let me start with a synopsis of the story:

The story goes: Yukari is a high school student who's parents have placed a lot of pressure on her, as well as people in her school, that she HAS TO get into a good college, or basically she's worthless. She hasn't thought about what else she might do besides that, so basically she just goes with it even though she hates it. But one day she is walking and thinking, and a weird guy with piercings all over his face(Arashi), sees her and asked her to be a model, she tries to run away, but she is snatched by drag queen(Isabella). She passes out and is taken to their hang out where she also meets Miwako, a tiny and cute girl who she mistakes for an angel at first. ;P They ask her to model, she refuses, and so it goes for a while.
I wont give anything else away about the story.

Its not really the story that makes Paradise Kiss so great, its not exactly anything special. What makes ParaKiss so great is the great humor, great characters, and OF COURSE.... THE FASHION!!!! If I had to say my favorite thing about Paradise Kiss, well it would be the characters, but after that its the fashion.! I *Love* the fashion, in fact I *love* it so much, I got the first Volume of Gothic and Lolita Bible for my birthday. If you like it too, I suggest checking them out. You can order them at susugabooks.com along with many other Japanese mangas or items. :D

Well, anyways, ParaKiss, in my opinion, is something anyone can anyone, and should enjoy. I understand in the later volumes there is some sex, so I guess its not for the under 16 set, but besides that, I would reccomend it to anyone.! Get Volume 1 today!!!

                          God Bless & *enjoy* ~Amy

                            Book Description

The role of property in fostering good governance, robust economies, and strong civil societies has received fresh attention in the wake of the collapse of communism, the adoption of a market driven approach to the economy, and the increasing impact of information technology. Some of these reforms have focused on a diverse package of measures dealing with land tenure security, land and property transactions, and access to credit. They have also been concerned with supporting physical planning, the sustainable management and control of land use and of natural resources, and facilitating real property taxation. As well, there has been a growing awareness of the requirement to address such issues as the protection of the environment and the provision of land for all people whatever their gender, but especially for the poor and ethnic minorities. Land Administration provides a high level overview of recent advances in building formal property systems throughout the world and reviews the role of property in advancing a society's economic and social agenda. It undertakes an in-depth examination of the land administration infrastructure required to support these modern property systems, giving particular attention to the survey, registration, valuation, and land use control functions. The text also provides an extended discussion of the information management challenges associate with the land administration field.

                              Book Description

Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Remote Sensing, and environmental modelling are increasingly being used to address land use and land use management issues although much of the development in these applications is based in specific case studies that are not readily accessible to a wide audience. Spatial Information for Land Use Management is designed as a reference that provides a description and discussion of the issues involved in the use of spatial information for land use management. The chapters include detailed examples of the use of spatial information in land use management. The book begins with the technological methods, examines applications in a variety of environments, and describes the ways in which issues of scale, uncertainty, linkage of models and GIS, and problem solution have been addressed.

                                Description:
The computer hydrologic model HEC-1, developed by the Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC), has been used for many years by hydrologists and engineers to estimate surface water runoff caused by rainfall events. Besides the rainfall data itself, the most sensitive set of input parameters in a runoff model are the rainfall loss parameters. The SCS (NRCS) Curve Number approach is commonly used to compute rainfall losses. Another method available for computing rainfall losses in HEC-1 is the Green and Ampt approach. However, this method is used infrequently because of the difficulty in obtaining the soil data needed to derive the Green and Ampt parameters. The purpose of this study is to present an automated method of computing Green and Ampt parameters using digital soil and land use data. Studies were performed with data that compare this automated method with another non-automated method of computing Green and Ampt parameters. Parameters computed using the automated method were consistent with the parameters computed using the non-automated method. Furthermore, by taking advantage of Geographic Information System (GIS) overlay capabilities, significant time was saved in computing the Green and Ampt parameters.

                                    Book Description

Photosensitization and photocatalysis refer to processes by which permanent chemical transformations are induced on substrates (organic/inorganic) by radiation to which the substrates themselves are transparent. Such transformations can be highly specific, very efficient, and occur under mild conditions. Herein lies the power of photochemical methods for possible applications in the field of conversion and storage of solar energy. This book provides a recent survey of the progress in this important area in catalysis, with an emphasis on inorganic complexes and organometallic compounds as the key light aborbers. The book is organized in three parts: fundamentals, followed by applications. Discussions cover a wide variety of photosensitized or photocatalyzed reactions: decomposition of water, reduction of CO2 and CO; spectral sensitization in photoelectrochemical cells; transformations (oxidation, reduction, isomerization, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, carbonylation, etc.) of organics such as alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, etc. In view of the variety of systems (sensitizers, substrates) and the topics covered, the volume is unique in the field of photochemistry and will appeal to academic and industrial researchers in various subdisciplines of chemistry, material science and catalysis.

                                    Book Description

This edited review book on Godunov methods contains 97 articles, all of which were presented at the international conference on Godunov Methods: Theory and Applications, held at Oxford, in October 1999, to commemorate the 70th birthday of the Russian mathematician Sergei K. Godunov. The central theme of this book is numerical methods for hyperbolic conservation laws following Godunov's key ideas contained in his celebrated paper of 1959. Hyperbolic conservation laws play a central role in mathematical modelling in several distinct disciplines of science and technology. Application areas include compressible, single (and multiple) fluid dynamics, shock waves, meteorology, elasticity, magnetohydrodynamics, relativity, and many others. The successes in the design and application of new and improved numerical methods of the Godunov type for hyperbolic conservation laws in the last twenty years have made a dramatic impact in these application areas. The 97 papers cover a very wide range of topics, such as design and analysis of numerical schemes, applications to compressible and incompressible fluid dynamics, multi-phase flows, combustion problems, astrophysics, environmental fluid dynamics, and detonation waves. This book will be a reference book on the subject of numerical methods for hyperbolic partial differential equations for many years to come.
All contributions are self-contained but do contain a review element. There is a key paper by Peter Sweby in which a general overview of Godunov methods is given. This contribution is particularly suitable for beginners on the subject. This book is unique: it contains virtually everything concerned with Godunov-type methods for conservation laws. As such it will be of particular interest to academics (applied mathematicians, numerical analysts, engineers, environmental scientists, physicists, and astrophysicists) involved in research on numerical methods for partial differential equations; scientists and engineers concerned with new numerical methods and applications to scientific and engineering problems e.g., mechanical engineers, aeronautical engineers, meteorologists; and academics involved in teaching numerical methods for partial differential equations at the postgraduate level.

"Godunov Methods: Theory and Applications" edited by Prof. Toro is an excellent book containing almost one hundred refereed articles devoted to the theory and applications of Godunov methods...the many articles contained in this book show how his method can be successfully applied to solve a large class of application problems...This book provides an exhaustive overview of past and present research work on Godunov methods and related techniques. It is already a classical reference for all those working on numerical methods for hyperbolic problems. Every mathematics library should have copies of this book."

                                      Book Description

Powerful personal narratives by the renowned author of Living Up the Street. These small essays are not unlike Dutch paintings of the sixteenth century. They are clear and precisely rendered, and are either thematically domestic scenes or pedestrian in their observations of the ordinary. There is a delirious joy in Soto's writings, and heartbreak. This collection features his much-lauded essays "The Jacket" and "Like Mexicans," along with new essays such as "Childhood Worries, or Why I Became a Writer," "Getting It Done," and the title essay in which Soto fashions himself to be Fresno's own Knut Hamsun, the Norwegian writer of the 1920s who lived on nothing more than his five senses. Poet and critic Christopher Buckley said of his poetry, "[Soto has] mastered his form, has found his voice, and has the life experiences to provide meaningful content." He could have been speaking of his prose as well. Soto is at home with the essay; he is able to paint moments that would otherwise seem dull and not worthy of comment. He picks up hitchhikers, sorts through the mystery of finding a wife, and pulls together his wits to solve the hunger of stray dogs. He is tender and outrageous; he is reflective on worldly matters and cagey with his family and friends. In all, his dazzling effects of language will keep the reader continually surprised. These portraits are set in his hometown, Fresno, and in his current residence, the San Francisco Bay area. They therefore mark his time and place, but honor the instincts of the master Knut Hamsun, who walked around his town, a spectacle of wonder. This volume includes forty-eight pieces: all of the personal narratives formerly collected in Small Faces, the best of Lesser Evils--both volumes long out-of-print--as well as five new essays.

If you missed Gary Soto's short stories the first time around, here's your chance to enjoy a great collection of his older pieces along with some new ones. While Soto makes it look easy, his series of generally two- to three-page recollections are a primer on how to see the things people walk past, overlook or forget, the things right in front of you. From stories pulled straight from his childhood in Fresno and reflections on growing up to the present, Soto's gift is evoking what he's seen and felt and combining it all in honest, vivid prose. In The Effects of Knut Hamsun on a Fresno Boy you will find writing that is sad, funny and sadly funny. It contains insights that are both personal and universal. Soto is not only a teriffic "Chicano writer," but, a teriffic writer without any categorical qualifier.
