Book Description
This engaging environmental history explores the rise, fall, and rebirth of one of the nation's most important urban public landscapes, and more significantly, the role public spaces play in shaping people's relationships with the natural world. Ari Kelman focuses on the battles fought over New Orleans's waterfront, examining the link between a river and its city and tracking the conflict between public and private control of the river. He describes the impact of floods, disease, and changing technologies on New Orleans's interactions with the Mississippi. Considering how the city grew distant--culturally and spatially--from the river, this book argues that urban areas provide a rich source for understanding people's connections with nature, and in turn, nature's impact on human history.
Customer Reviews:
get "Rising Tide" instead.......2007-02-14
There's nothing wrong with this book. It's a good book. But it pales beside a great book, John Barry's "Rising Tide," that covers much of the same material in greater depth, is infinitely better written, and which this book seems to have borrowed from. Kelman does give more of the early history than does Barry, as well as more about such things things as yellow fever. From an acadmeic perspective re: the geography of New Orleans, Richard Campanella's work is better also.
Interesting But Uneven.......2003-08-05
This is a book by an academic for academics. That being said, this topic ached to be addressed. Kelman has done his homework concerning the first two centuries of New Orleans' relationship with the Mississippi. The third (1918-present) seems to stop with the defeat of the notorious riverfront expressway. The river is likely (according to some scientists) to shift away from New Orleans, leaving the riverfront a muddy trickle. Kelman is silent on this. The degree of pollution and the efforts to clean up the lower part of the river go unsung as well. The last parts of the book have a rushed feeling, as if the expansive early history sapped the author's resources and there was little left worth saying. Lively it's not, but the book is important and a good reference work for further research.

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A019034. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This paper generalizes the specific lessons from a past airlift operation, thus enabling those lessons to be applied in planning, analyzing, and executing contemporary or future airlift operations. In so doing, the paper answers the following research question: "How should lessons from past operations be applied to current situations?" In this case, the specific lessons from the 1973 airlift operation supporting Israel, Operation NICKEL GRASS, were analyzed and generalized using the Tenets of Operations described in U.S. Army field manuals. NICKEL GRASS was a successful airlift-centric operation that provides valuable insights into the Air Force's ability to carry out short- notice, sustainment operations in support of engaged fighting forces. Case study methodology is used to generalize the specific lessons from the operation. Three investigative questions were addressed: (1) What events led up to the U.S. airlift support to Israel?; (2) What lessons did the Air Force learn from the operation?; and (3) How should these lessons be applied to contemporary airlift operations? Finally, the Tenets of Airlift Operations are defined and utilized as general lesson categories. These categories balance the Air Force's focus on the unique aspects of Air Power and provide common ground for structuring, planning, and execution discussions in the joint environment.

Customer Reviews:
Standard, not romantic.......2006-03-12
This book has suggested itineraries for Savannah and nearby communities. To me, it did not focus on romantic things to do. It is more a standard tour book for the more affluent, middle aged and older crowd. I am 40 and think my mother would have enjoyed this book more than I did. Something fun to do in Savannah: check out Greg Proffit's Haunted Pub Crawl. You can find him on the web. He takes you on a guided walking tour of pubs in the historic district while telling ghost tales, culiminating in the attic of the Blue Moon Brewery. Ghost tales and grog! And make sure to see the cemetery from Midnight in the Garden. Worth the trip. (I am on Amazon right now, looking for a better guide book than this one)
great info-and while romantic, practical as well.......2005-07-09
Loved the book, very informative, gives great ideas for planning itineraries, and while "romantic" is in the title, it's pretty practical and insightful.
Romance-Savannah Style.......2001-11-28
When visiting Savannah, Ms. Byrd's book is a must. Byrd's book is like having your own personal tour guide with you the whole time you are in Savannah. Buy this book and let Ms. Byrd show you how truly romantic Savannah can be. Bravo Ms. Byrd!
Plan Your Next Trip.......2001-06-27
No matter how many times one visits Savannah, it is impossible to see everything this eccentric, yet delightful southern city has to offer without the help of a local. Georgia R. Byrd, founding editor of Savannah Magazine and contibuting writer to Southern Living magazine, serves up a charming little taste of Savannah's best attractions as well as some of her deep, dark secrets. The book is divided into 26 sections of possible adventures for visitors. They range from delectible descriptions of quaint bed and breakfasts and hidden antique stores, to riverboat cruises and tours of Civil War forts, to delicious restaurants and isolated beaches. Choose from sections like, "High Cotton, High Times, and High Tea" - a two day, one night look at the best of Savannah's affluent past, "Love Turns Green" - a two day, one night celebration of Saint Patrick's Day when the river runs green, "Working Up A Sweat" - a one day, one night Savannah sports sampler, or "Divine Diversions" - a one day, one night look at Savannah architecture. Byrd doesn't stop at Savannah, though, she details trips to nearby Tybee Island, Hilton Head, Saint Simon's Island, and Cumberland Island. It will be hard to choose what to do first! Thank you, Mrs. Byrd, for helping me plan my next trip!
Romantic Days and Nights in Savannah.......2001-03-30
Georgia Byrd, in her entirely unique style, paints a wonderful picture of life and times in Savannah, Georgia. The book was an engrossing read--just sorry it wasn't longer. The door is wide open for additional sequels and I look forward to Georgia's next effort. Bravo, Ms. Byrd!!

Every Life
Makes a Story
Djo has a story: Once he was one of "Titid's boys," a vital member of Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide's election team, fighting to overthrow military dictatorship in Haiti. Now he is barely alive, the victim of a political firebombing.
Jeremie has a story: Convent-educated Jeremie can climb out of the slums of Port-au-Prince. But she is torn between her mother's hopes and her own wishes for herself ... and for Haiti.
Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide has a story: A dream of a new Haiti, one in which every person would have a decent life ... a house with a roof ... clean water to drink ... a good plate of rice and beans every day ... a field to work in.
At Aristide's request, Djo tells his story to Jeremie -- for Titid believes in the power of all of their stories to make change. As Jeremie listens to Djo, and to her own heart, she knows that they will begin a new story, one that is all their own, together.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful glimpse of Haiti.......2006-08-16
Although this book was written for young adult/teenagers it is really beautifully written and suitable for any age. The stories portray a very accurate view of the lives young people lead in Haiti. Very well done.
The sad story of Haiti continues.......2003-09-09
I'm reading this book because it is on The Battle of the Books list in Scottsdale AZ. Students read books and answer questions in a "Jeopardy" type contest, and I always read along with my grandchildren. I am very happy that this book is on the list for 7-8 graders. A Taste of Salt refers to the key to releasing zombies, and in this book reading is the taste of salt for the lost boys of Port-au-Prince, as they are rescued by Father Aristede. Djo, a leader of the boys, lays dying in the hospital as his story is recorded by Jeremie, a convent-raised young woman sent by Aristede. Djo was kidnapped by government troops to work in the sugar cane fields of the Dominican Republic (I'll always think of Djo and the cane cutters when I buy sugar) and his years there are terrible. I looked on Human Rights Watch website and found that there are 500,000 Haitians still working in the cane fields in deplorable conditions. "Father" Titid is now married, president of Haiti, and perpetuating the same dreadful oppression upon the people which he formerly preached against. A revolution gone wrong, as they often do, but an important and touching story of the strength of young people.
Must Read.......2002-04-03
Taste of Salt, by Frances Temple is the best book I have read yet. This book teaches you how life is special. The book has emotion, love, happiness, loneliness, and a lot more real feelings people have. The best part is the writer is very graphic in her writing, you almost feel like you were there. The whole book is interesting, you never get tired of reading it. I think Taste of Salt can touch many people in different ways.
A tale of Haiti.......2002-01-11
Taste of Salt, written by Frances Temple, is a provocative, exciting tale of the life of a young Haitian man, Djo, and the struggle against a dictatorship that hired Macoutes, thugs, to keep itself in power. Djo grew up on the streets with his brother before Father Aristide, known to them as Titid, adopted them. Djo was injured by Macoutes who firebombed him. Now he lies in a hospital bed telling his story to a student of a nun school named Jeremie. She listens.
There are several reasons to read this book, but the two greatest are its complex setting and the intricate writing style. The setting is elaborate as the book takes place in 1991in the city of Port-Au-Prince, when people were trying to attain a democracy and end the dictatorship of Jean-Claude Duvalier who named himself president for life and hired Macoutes. The writing style is unique as it has many flashbacks and the story is half from Djo's view and half from Jeremie's view. The flashbacks are interesting as they tell how the characters came to their current state and telling what they did until then. Also the different characters views have are written slightly different with slightly different writing styles that reflect the different characters speech styles.
This book is quite good but some may find fault with the fact that it uses some Creole words that can be quite confusing and force you to look back to the glossary disrupting. Though at first it may appear a negative fact, by the end it becomes interesting and you feel you have learned a little of their culture. However, even if one finds the Creole to be disrupting they will still enjoy the overall quality of this book.
Great for classroom use!.......2000-07-01
I recently read this book in order to find fresh literature to present in the classroom. I can't wait to read this with my 7th-grade English students. Because of its structure, Taste of Salt lends itself to many creative teaching strategies. The values and themes are very relevant to our students today. Read it and you will see!

Book Description
The distributed coding hypothesis —the view that complex cognitive functions such as visual perception or memory formation are the work of large networks of neurons in areas of the cerebral cortex —is widely accepted in contemporary neuroscience. Yet only in recent years have tools emerged that can monitor the electrophysiological activity of neuron ensembles in the cortical areas of awake, behaving animals. The use of these multichannel recording techniques in biological network analysis is changing the way scientists view brain function. These methods also offer the possibility of a direct test of the distributed coding hypothesis.
Neuronal Ensembles: Strategies for Recording and Decoding presents a comprehensive treatment of multichannel recording techniques —how to apply them and how to analyze the vast amounts of data they generate. Composed of contributions by leading neuroscientists at the forefront of this technology, the book covers groundbreaking work in multichannel microelectrode technology, analyses of single neuron spike trains, and ensemble analysis of cell populations. The authors outline established techniques, offer practical tips on developing new methods, and share their ideas for further brain research.
Topics covered include:
- Extracellular recording and analysis of neural activity
- The relationship between neuronal codes and cortical organization
- Cell assemblies and cognitive function
- Neuronal population coding
- Motor cortical information processing
- Detection and identification of ensemble codes in the motor cortex
- Ensemble recordings and the nature of stimulus representation in hippocampal cognitive maps
- Methods, results, and issues related to recording neural ensembles
- Neuronal ensemble dynamics in the hippocampus and neocortex during sleep and waking
- Behavioral, electrophysiological, and genetic approaches to the study of synaptic plasticity and memory
Neuronal Ensembles: Strategies for Recording and Decoding is an important reference for researchers, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows in all areas of neuroscience, cognitive neuroscience, and bioengineering.

Book Description
Bonding Theory for Metals and Alloys exhorts the potential existence of covalent bonding in metals and alloys. Through the recognition of the covalent bond in coexistence with the 'free' electron band, the book describes and demonstrates how the many experimental observations on metals and alloys can all be reconciled. Subsequently, it shows how the individual view of metals and alloys by physicists, chemists and metallurgists can be unified. The physical phenomena of metals and alloys covered in this book are: Miscibility Gap between two liquid metals; Phase Equilibrium Diagrams; Phenomenon of Melting. Superconductivity; Nitinol; A Metal-Alloy with Memory; Mechanical Properties; Liquid Metal Embrittlement; Superplasticity; Corrosion; The author introduces a new theory based on 'Covalon' conduction, which forms the basis for a new approach to the theory of superconductivity. This new approach not only explains the many observations made on the phenomenon of superconductivity but also makes predictions that have been confirmed.
* Openly recognizes the electrons as the most important and the only factor in understanding metals and alloys
* Proposes "Covalon" conduction theory, which carries current in covalent bonded pairs
* Investigates phase diagrams both from theoretical and experimental point of view

Book Description
This book describes the rapidly developing field of interior point methods (IPMs). An extensive analysis is given of path-following methods for linear programming, quadratic programming and convex programming. These methods, which form a subclass of interior point methods, follow the central path, which is an analytic curve defined by the problem. Relatively simple and elegant proofs for polynomiality are given. The theory is illustrated using several explicit examples. Moreover, an overview of other classes of IPMs is given. It is shown that all these methods rely on the same notion as the path-following methods: all these methods use the central path implicitly or explicitly as a reference path to go to the optimum.
For specialists in IPMs as well as those seeking an introduction to IPMs. The book is accessible to any mathematician with basic mathematical programming knowledge.

A Monumental Vision: The Sculpture of Henry Moore
ASIN: 0520231619 |
Book Description
Henry Moore's writings constitute a vivid and comprehensive record of his life and work, of the influences that shaped his vision, and of his reactions to the work of other artists, periods, and cultures. Spanning some seventy years, Moore's writings and conversations are much more than documentary records of his life and times: they have considerable literary merit in their own right.
This fascinating collection of Moore's written and spoken words is the most comprehensive yet compiled, and contains much previously unpublished material. It includes over 150 illustrations: photographs of the sculptures, drawings and prints discussed in the text, illustrations of works by other artists, and photographs of the sculptor and his environment at various stages of his life.
Henry Moore: Writings and Conversations completes and complements the catalogues of his sculpture, drawings, and prints. It will be indispensable for scholars and engrossing reading for Moore enthusiasts worldwide.

More to Moore than inventing the hole.......2007-01-10
My interest in this book came about because Henry Moore is often quoted as saying something like "make it! don't talk about it"; given that, how come there is a substantial book of his writing and conversations?
In fairness to Moore most of the entries in this book come from his journals and lecture notes rather than published works.
What makes this book so very interesting is Moore's plain speaking about many of the highly complicated issues of art making.
I was left with the overwhealming feeling that it would be very nice if contemporary art writers abandoned their incomprehensible elitist academic style in favour of Moore's no less intellectual but ifinitely more readable approach.
A must read for any Moore enthusiast.......2002-11-28
Editor Alan Wilkinson was a close friend of Henry Moore, and it shows in the care he put into editing this book. Other than the introduction, entitled "Perfect Symmetry is Death", Wilkinson allowed Moore to speak for himself by drawing from the man's own words, through interviews, articles, letters, and even scribblings in his notebooks.
The chapters are arranged under the following headings: "Ch. 1: Life and Influences", "Ch. 2: Friends and Colleagues", "Ch. 3: Art and Artists", "Ch. 4: On Sculpture", and "Ch. 5: Works by Henry Moore". Bibliographical sources, list of Moore's most well known work, and a general keyword index can be found in the back.
Because interviews Moore gave in 1973 might refer to events from his childhood, Wilkinson took care to put as much of the artist's words into context by surrounding it with other relevant quotations. For example, on page 35, the passage that begins with "In Castleford, where I was born, there are what called sand holes. They're caves where the sand has been excavated" (1973) is followed by "What is a cave? A cave is a shape. It's not the lump of mountain over it" (1962).
With a foreword by Alan Bowness. Overall, a very compelling read.
