Then her roommate proposes a solution: Meet one new guy every day for thirty days. Consider it "target practice" for when Mr. Perfect comes along. Claudia's game, but she definetely hasn't got game. In fact, Flirting 101 could be her toughest course to pass...

          3 out of 5 stars Ashley's Review.......2006-11-29

I liked this book because every detail painted a picture in my mind. It also gave me an idea of what college was going to be like.
Claudia is going on her first year of college but she has to leave her boyfriend, Drew, behind. She decides to break up with him and start fresh. While she is there she decided that she wants to join the newspaper. She talks to Gabe, the man of her dreams about getting the job. He tells her she can be on the newspaper. Claudia really likes him, but doesn't have the courage to talk to him. Her room mate, Charlie, tells her to gain her courage by talking to one guy every day for 30 days.
I recommend this book to girls from ages 11-adult because it is a college book and older people would like and understand it better.

          5 out of 5 stars A fun read with a good message.......2006-10-08

Claudia is a college freshman. Having just dumped her boyfriend, she is ready to date and flirt. The only problem is she doesn't know any boys and turns into a nervous wreck around them. She devises a plan to flirt with one boy a day for thirty days. This way she is sure to find Mr. Right.

This novel is great! It is a cute, fun read. I think it is completely relateable. It is tough to get back into the dating scene after having a boyfriend for several years.

The purpose of "target practice" is about teaching yourself to talk to people despite awkwardness. Claudia definitely has some embarassing moments but lives through them. I found humour in the situations that arise.

I also liked the Claudia's character growth. At the beginning, she has very little self esteem. By the end her self esteem is much higher and she has no problem talking to guys.

Basically, this book is about the boys we love and the ones that drive us nuts. It also encourages the reader to go for what they want in life and to never stop believing in true love.

4 out of 5 stars lots of fun.......2006-09-12

Claudia is a new college freshman, and newly single, having recently broken up with her high-school-long boyfriend. She meets a cute guy within hours of coming to campus, and is horrified to find herself tongue-tied. Her new roommate suggests that she might need flirting practice after being with one guy for so long. Her proposition: meet and talk to one new guy a day for the month of September, just to get practice. Claudia gamely agrees. After all, what could it hurt? At the very least, she'll meet new people and improve her skills. At most? Well, out of thirty guys, who's to say one of them won't be Mr. Right? After all, Claudia knows that Mr. Right never has a girlfriend, so she may as well keep looking. This story goes deeper than it's flirting lessons. It's also about friendship, true love, and making life want you want it to be. The characters are clever and relatable, and it's an overall fun read.

2 out of 5 stars Not for adults.......2006-04-05

I am an adult who enjoys YA literature, but this book was absolute nonsensical fluff. I became aware of this book when Amazon recommended it to me because I liked The Boyfriend List. I read the book in an hour or so last night, and I got nothing worthwhile from the experience. What stood out to me the most is the fact that the main character's motivation never really made sense. The plot construction hinges on Claudia concluding that her sex appeal must be waning and deciding to practice her flirting skills by striking up a conversation with one new guy every day. So far, so good. The problem is that she comes to this conclusion after only one week of being single, and immediately after some random guy at a party tries to kiss her. Claudia successfully extricates herself from the guy trying to make out with her, is complimented on the way she handled the guy by her Crush, and what she takes from those back-to-back experiences is that she must not be very attractive to guys. That makes no sense whatsoever. Seriously, that's precisely the lack of internal logic and appropriate plot development you can look forward to in this book. Claudia is swarmed with male attention to an unrealistic degree (her ex-boyfriend is trying to get back together with her, band members that she interviews proposition her, the most socially important guy at her first Greek party hits on her, guys at the gym ogle her, a really great guy sees her at a coffee shop once and is so taken with her that he arranges a way to meet cute with her later) and yet she keeps telling us in her narrative that she lacks confidence in her ability to attract men. I was never able to really connect with Claudia and I did not think that her experiences had any ring of truth to them. It's a fast read, but completely forgettable and only slightly enjoyable.

          Book Description

What makes us react or feel the way we do? If you have ever asked yourself this question, then let gifted writer John Medina take you on a fascinating tour of the questions involved in the quest to understand the biological basis of human behavior. By describing the gap that exists between a human behavior and a human gene, this captivating book both clarifies and debunks ideas about the genetic roots of behavior, from the genes of divorce to the tendency to eat chocolate. Using Dante's The Divine Comedy as an organizing framework, The Genetic Inferno explains each of the "seven deadly sins"--lust, gluttony, avarice, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride--in terms of twentieth century genes and brains. Written by a practicing research scientist, this book is not only for biologists, but for literature majors, business people, and parents--indeed anyone interested in how our genes work to make us behave the way we do.

4 out of 5 stars Peculiar point of view, worth reading........2003-08-13

I gave this book four stars since sometimes it was a little tedious to read. However, the conception of the book is original, and the author anecdotes are well placed and very famlilar. He makes you feel as if you are really getting to know him. I liked his style and his original view, although personally I don't like Dante that much. This is a very good book for the layman, and might not be that interesting for someone with fair background in neurosciences.

5 out of 5 stars Darwin bows to Dante in Medina's clear and helpful "Inferno".......2000-11-14

John Medina is a molecular biologist, bioengineer, and award winning teacher with a talent for metaphor and an unusual flair for explaining extremely technical ideas in understandable terms without losing the meaning in the details. His writing is clear and precise, his organization and diagrams are inspired.

"The Genetic Inferno: Inside The Seven Deadly Sins" is a new release from Medina for November, describing using the metaphors of Dante's books what is known about the molecular machinery underlying the human experience. While it becomes awkward in parts, it works magnificently through most of the book, transporting the reader back and forth between purgatory and the mundane vices and virtues of everyday life, all tied together by those tiny invisible molecular processes most of us never even think twice about.

The Genetic Inferno compares to Matt Ridley's "Genome" in that they are both about the genetics of human nature, but they approach it in very different ways. "Inferno" spends much more time elaborating clearly what is known about mechanisms lying between gene and behavior, while "Genome" samples particular genes and often speculates on their relevance to human life. Medina has a minimum of the kind of interesting digressions that make Genome so fascinating, but makes complex biochemistry and behavioral genetics highly accessible and puts them into good perspective.

One of the most interesting things about this book is that in spite of its heavy emphasis on the biological basis of human life, it mostly avoids reliance on evolutionary theory in order to emphasize the molecular mechanisms themselves and their relationship to behavior and experience. Yet it isn't an "anti-evolution" book, so much as it is one that explains human genes and behavior in a way that avoids evolution in favor of its strong metaphor and clear explanations for genes and behavior.

With great artistry, Medina accomplishes the difficult feat of at once making clear the gap between genes and behavior and making us aware that we are physical, chemical entities rather than puffs of spirit residing in a physical shell. At the same time, he makes the reader aware of the of how complex and wondrous the whole process is and how little we can claim to understand with certainty about its underlying higher order principles. He ends the book with:

"When one encounters a mysterious masterpiece filled with unknown but thrilling complexities, one is not left with the answer, one is simply left with a point of view."

            Book Description

This monumental text presents the principles of biochemistry. Biochemistry deals with the substances composing living organisms, and the chemical conversions proceeding within living organisms, or within some of the simplified systems isolated from these organisms. Biochemistry is the foundation for a finer and deeper understanding of the biological events and phenomena inherent in all levels of the organization of living matter; starting from the most primitive cells until the interactions of populations of living organisms between both themselves, and also the environment. In other words, biochemical knowledge is the basis of the mechanistic aspects of nearly all the main biological disciplines: cell biology, physiology of animals and plants, genetics, evolution, and ecology. The borders between each of these disciplines and biochemistry have become more and more diffused since a significant part of biochemical knowledge dissolves into these disciplines.

                    Book Description

Many bacteria, animals, and plants produce toxins that can prove lethal to other organisms. Toxins are a form of "biological warfare" that helps their producer to survive and so confer an evolutionary advantage. They display an extraordinary range of complexity, from the formic acid produced by ants to bacterial proteins composed of thousands of amino acids. This Guidebook considers the more complex protein and peptide toxins and groups them according to their mode of action. Topics covered include: membrane-permeabilizing toxins; toxins affecting signal transduction and protein synthesis; cytoskeleton-affecting toxins; toxins affecting the immune and inflammatory response. This class of biomolecules will be of interest to a wide range of researchers in cell biology, neuroscience, and toxicology.

                          Book Description

In the area of geomechanics, sophisticated sampling and analytical techniques can be used to provide accurate ground and soil information, but only within the limits of the initial assumptions and the modelling used. The accuracy of the model can be increased by the use of computer based numerical modelling and analysis, especially the finite element method.
In this volume, experts from all over the world describe how different methods of analysis and modelling are used to answer some of the questions associated with geomechanics, and give an insight into the future directions of those methods.

                            Book Description

The solution of stress analysis problems through numerical, computer oriented techniques is becoming more and more popular in soil and rock engineering. This is due to the ability of these methods to handle geometrically complex problems even in the presence of highly nonlinear material behaviour, characterizing the majority of soils and rocks, and of media consisting of two or more phases, like saturated and partially saturated soils. Aim of this book is to present to researchers and engineers working in the various branches of geomechanics an updated state of the research on the development and application of numerical methods in geotechnical and foundation engineering. Particular attention is devoted to the formulation of nonlinear material models and to their use for the analysis of complex engineering problems. In addition to the constitutive modelling, other topics discussed concern the use of the finite element and boundary element methods in geomechanics; the dynamic analysis of inelastic and saturated soils; the solution of seepage, consolidation and coupled problems; the analysis of soil-structure interaction problems; the numerical procedures for the interpretation of field measurements; the analysis of tunnels and underground openings.

                                          Book Description

Key writings by one of the most important social reformers of the nineteenth century that speak to our own turbulent times Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) never considered himself a political thinker. And yet he rose to prominence during one of the most turbulent times in U.S. history. As a result, political questions grew in importance for him, becoming by the 1860s one of his chief concerns as a public intellectual. In The Political Emerson, David M. Robinson has brought together for the first time the best of Emerson's numerous writings on politics and social reform.
