Book Description
St. Martin's is proud to present a new and continuing series of the greatest classics in the literature of hunting and adventure, chosen from the personal library of writer and big game hunter Peter Hathaway Capstick. These showcase volumes will once again make available the true masterpieces of Africana to collectors, armchair hunters, sportsmen, and readers at large. The twenty-sixth president of the United States was also a world-renowned hunter, conservationist, soldier, and scholar. In 1908 he took a long safari holiday in East Africa with his son Kermit. His account of this adventure is as remarkably fresh today as it was when these adventures on the veldt were first published. Roosevelt describes the excitement of the chase, the people he met (including such famous hunters as Cunninghame and Selous), and flora and fauna he collected in the name of science. Long out of print, this classic is one of the preeminent examples of Africana, and belongs on every collector's shelf.
Download Description
This book reads like a loping conversation with Roosevelt about his safari in east Africa. He is full of dated opinions about native peoples, and the endless hunting scenes are not for vegetarians. All this said, it is a bully adventure book.

African Game Trails (Capstick Library).......2007-01-24
I purchased a copy of this book and am extremely disapointed with the quality of the photographs. They are so fuzzy and out-of-focus as to be useless--in some cases unrecognizable. I'm suprised that you offer such a poor quality volume for sale. I coresponded with the publisher and the nice young lady offered to send me another copy but added "I looked at the pictures and they're terrible." I replied that I already had one lousy copy and did not need another. You should check the quality of this volume carefully....it's terrible!

Classic African Safari Travel Narrative.......2002-11-22
In 1909, just after the end of his term as President, Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Africa for a year long safari. The trip was a major undertaking ; hundreds of porters were needed to carry his baggage. Roosevelt's son, Kermit came along, taking photographs which are reproduced in the book. Roosevelt and company bag hundred of animals. It appears that all hunting rules were suspended for the ex-president. Roosevelt and son are soon blasting away at anything and everything that comes into view. British East Africa is described in terms that make today's politically correct readers wince. Attitudes have changed dramatically in less than one hundred years. It is odd to hear Roosevelt describe parts of Africa as a "white man's country," suitable for large scale settlement by Europeans. The book bogs down and I was unable to read it without skimming through some parts. The descriptions of marching through wilderness and chasing after game on foot and on horseback seem to go on forever. There is a lot of great infomation here even if it is necessary to become your own editor by skipping though tedious parts.
A must read if you are going on safari.......2002-05-20
This book gives you the genuine flavor of safari 80 years ago.
Better than being there.......2001-11-24
Not being very good with a gun, having little outdoorsman skills, and not being in the best shape of my life, reading this book was better than being there. If I was there, I would miss the animals, I would be too tired to enjoy it, and besides all of that, Africa is not as it was 100 years ago.
I have just begun to reread this book, and I don't know how many times this is. I enjoy it each and every time I pick it up.

A thoughtful, environment-oriented, biographical study.......2003-03-04
H. Paul Jeffers' Roosevelt The Explorer: Teddy Roosevelt's Amazing Adventures As A Naturalist, Conservationist, And Explorer is an outstanding biography of American President Teddy Roosevelt and one which focuses specifically upon his work in the areas of conservation and exploring. Dwelling on Roosevelt's enthusiastic appreciation of nature, and his struggles as President against tough opposition in order to create a system of national parks and to protect America's forests and wetlands from the depredation of development, Roosevelt The Explorer is a thoughtful, environment-oriented, biographical study of a truly great American leader, family man, outdoor enthusiast, and human being.

It looked to be a love story for the ages. They first met as she was handing over his order of a Big O sandwich, six-piece nuggets, small fries, and a medium chocolate shake. He had exact change. They spent a magical night together with a gang of young rebels, traipsing through town on a mission to correct grammatical errors in street signs and graffiti ("Drive Slowly"). But just when it seemed things couldn't be better, tragedy struck. Anthony caught his beloved Diana making out at a party with another guy. And what's worse, he was a high school graduate from the neighboring town, hailing only by his last name: Turner. Now Anthony must devise a vengeful plan by which he can humiliate his humiliator and win back his girl.
M.T. Anderson, author of the darkly comic suburban vampire tale Thirsty, here turns his attention to the of-this-world horrors of high school romance and minimum-wage drudgery. The result is a hugely funny, fast-paced romp through teen angst. Passages describing the O'Dermott's experience (the fast-food joint where Turner works and where Anthony gets a job as part of his evil plot) are spill-your-soda hilarious--obviously the words of someone who has lived the nightmare. Anthony laments, "It was hard not to feel ugly. Crusty. Doped. My fingernails were black. My shirt was stiff. My hair hung flat. My skin was shellacked with ambient lard." Not to mention the fact that he works side-by-side with his nemesis, his two best friends have fallen in subverbal saccharine love with each other, and his only hope is teaming up with Shunt, the vegan, anarchist grill cook. As Anderson clearly understands and as Anthony notes (while mustering the courage to kiss his archenemy's girlfriend), "There is a certain ferocity you need, to be a teenager in America." Indeed. (Ages 13 and older) --Brangien Davis
Book Description
M.T. Anderson, author of the award-winning THIRSTY, cooks up a story of love and betrayal, with a side order of revenge—and serves it all with comedic relish.
Anthony has never been able to stand up for himself—that is, not until his girlfriend, Diana, is in someone else's arms. Then Anthony vows revenge and devises The Plan. It begins with getting a job at the fast-food restaurant where Turner (a.k.a. the guy who stole his girlfriend) happens to be a star employee. But when The Plan is finally assembled in this hilarious novel that PUBLISHERS WEEKELY called "both a tasty treat and a stinging satire," will Anthony's hunger for revenge be satisfied? And more important, will he prove he's not a wuss?
Customer Reviews:
Pretty good. .......2007-10-19
I didn't like Feed, so I approached this novel apprehensively. But I found it's simplicity refreshing and it's sarcasm entertaining. While it wouldn't be my pick for the deepest or most moving story, it's pretty good, and I think, worth reading.
Quirky Characters. Maybe Too Quirky........2007-06-14
Anthony, a typical self-conscious high school student, is miserable. He was dating Diana, the girl of his dreams, and everything was going well. She seemed to enjoy spending time with him and even appreciated his very odd, sarcastic sense of humor. Then one night Anthony and Diana went to a party. They lost track of each other, and later Anthony found Diana making out with Turner, an arrogant guy she worked with at O'Dermott's, a fast food restaurant. Anthony was furious at this scene and vowed to win Diana back and to get revenge on Turner.
The first step in Anthony's plan is to get a job at O'Dermott's, especially after Turner dumps Diana and Diana quits working there. Once there, Anthony befriends Shunt, the disgruntled anti-establishment cook who wants to start a resistance movement to undermine the company. Together, Anthony and Shunt form a plot to capitalize on the rivalry between O'Dermott's and Burger Queen. Shunt hopes to disrupt the shooting of an O'Dermott's commercial in their town, and Anthony just wants his girlfriend back. But can they pull off their plan without getting caught?
Most of the characters in this story were great--they each had distinct personalities and problems that came through and made the plot more interesting. I liked the insight into fast-food places and the rivalry this book showed between the employees of these restaurants. I thought the idea of the grammar patrol, roaming around and fixing graffiti, was hysterical.
However, some of the characters, including Anthony, were annoying. He was so obsessed with Diana and so clingy, I don't understand how anyone would want to date him. His parents, with their habit of listening in on his phone calls, were also annoying.
Anderson is a great writer..........2006-12-29
Although teen romance is not something I go for often, I liked this book. I guess one really couldn't term it as romance per se though. Anthony is trying to revenge himself on Turner, who stole his girlfriend at a party one night. In order to do this, he joins O'Dermotts (where Turner worked), and even enlists fellow employee Shunt while pretending to be interested in Shunt's crusade against the fast food corporations. Shunt is the epitome of PETA-ness, if there is such a quality, and he tries to exacerbate the war between O'Dermotts and rival fast food joint, Burger Queen.
This book is wacky and realistic--for, even though the characters themselves often come across as exaggerations (like Turner, Shunt, etc), the truths Anderson portrays about teenage life and love are true. A hillarious novel, with all the interesting background touches that make Anderson stand out as a great novelist--such as the gang of teens that go around correcting grammar on signs and graffiti.
Like this book was good, like just good.......2006-07-25
I had high expectations for this book. It had an unique title, an interesting cover and the back cover made it seem like it would be outstanding. Anderson has a talent for capturing the genuine essence of teenage love, and he also has a talent for making his characters seem like real people, (especially the parents in the story... their dialogue resonates with authenticity.) However, this book wasn't as hilarious as I thought it would be. It was definitely humorous and original, but not hilarious. My biggest gripe about this book was that Anderson made it so that practically every teenage character said "like" after and before every word. If he wanted to establish characters with more realistic individuality he should not have done this, because while it is true that many teenagers say like quite often, not every teenager says it... instead of making seperate characters with seperate unique personalities, he seems to have created all the teenage characters to fit within an adults stereotype of teenagers.. and I think in that respect any discriminating reader or teenager can notice this as a flaw. Also, some of the conversation between a love struck teenage couple seemed far fetched. They talked to eachother in their own secret language, and while I've known teenage couples to be like that, I couldn't picture any teenagers speaking the way they were speaking. My last gripe is that throughout the book the main character is sometimes referred to as a freaky kid or a wild and crazy kid, but to me he basically seemed like a normal teenage guy. At time Anderson did have a way with words and descriptions which is worthy of praise. I like the authenticity of the emotions in this book, and I thought the ending was a great ending because it was realistic and it pulls on one's heartstrings.
Likeably Helpless.......2006-02-19
A character with a strong voice goes a long way, but mix in a shot of humor and a few dashes of the issues teens deal with, and you've got a winner. M.T. Anderson's Burger Wuss has so many right ingredients that's it's tough for me to tell just what I didn't like about it.
Anthony is so likeably helpless, the loser we all want to win. He's the guy who thinks that "There is a certain ferocity you need, to be a teenager in America," and is cleverly nive enough to mean it when he says it, even if he doesn't understand what he's saying.
And Turner's the opposite. From the moment I met him, I didn't trust him. I wanted him to drop his cell phone in the fry grease, walk into the cross hairs of a bird turd, put on magic shop deodorant that smells like onions, rip the back of his pants open on a bull's horn, gouge his knee on a VW bug bumper. You get the picture. None of those happened to Turner in the book, in case you had a visceral reaction to what I just said and made up new four letter swear words, scratching a thick "X" across your computer screen with your locker key. I made all those up.
But they could have been real, and I could have wanted Anthony to do them to Turner. That's how I felt, for a while. Then things switched on me. Someone changed my mind about him, and I started to see him as pathetic. Maybe that's what I didn't like about him. I wanted him to win so badly (Isn't that what we want for our heroes?) that I was disappointed when he turned out a sort of anti-hero, the kind that we're supposed to learn from in all the wrong ways and that leave a sour wrinkle in our brain because things aren't entirely right. Which isn't always bad, is it? Love, friends, jobs, family - they don't always work out. Life doesn't end up all whipped cream and strawberries all the time. Neither should books. Or so they say.

Book Description
Paul N. MacDonald has assembled a collection of powerful molecular tools for examining and characterizing protein-protein, protein-DNA, and protein-RNA interactions. The techniques range from the most basic (introducing plasmids into yeasts, interaction assays, and recovering the plasmids from yeast), to the most advanced alternative strategies (involving one-hybrid, split two-hybrid, three-hybrid, membrane recruitment systems, and mammalian systems). Methods are also provided for dealing with the well-known problem of artifacts and false positives and for identifying the interacting partners in important biological systems, including the SMAD and nuclear receptor pathways. To ensure ready reproducibility and robust results, each technique is described in step-by-step detail by researchers who employ it regularly.

Book Description
This completely revised and updated edition of YAC Protocols takes advantage of the many new advances in biology since the publication of the first edition, including the sequencing of the human genome, the genomes of a wide variety of other organisms, and the increased use of transgenic animals for understanding the molecular basis of human and animal disease. This volume also provides a much-needed update on the new techniques currently employed and to help redefine and illustrate the important roles still to be played by yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) technologies in the postgenomic age.
YAC Protocols, Second Edition, demonstrates the enormous potential use of YAC technologies in understanding the role of genetics in maintaining health, promoting pathogenesis, and conferring susceptibility to disease. Offering solutions to the many problems that have plagued researchers, this new edition allows for the wider and more efficient use of YAC technologies for the analysis of genetic and pathogenic causes of human disease.

Book Description
In YAC Protocols experienced researchers offer a comprehensive collection of their easily reproducible and proven methods for analyzing complex human, animal, and plant genomes. The step-by-step protocols cover all aspects of yeast artificial chromosomes, ranging from the construction of YAC libraries to their storage, screening, and database management, and to their use in such specialist applications as the transfer of YACs to mammalian cells and the isolation of coding sequences from YACs.
YAC Protocols allows workers to add promising approaches adapted from yeast genetics to their personal repertoires and to introduce novel techniques emerging from the accumulating experience with YACs as a tool for genome analysis. Its extensive notes and background information not only significantly enhance the effective use of the methods, but also provide a valuable hands-on resource for those wishing to adapt protocols to suit their own applications.

Book Description
This book was motivated in large part by the tremendous interest shown in nitride semiconductors by the scientific community in recent years. The interest is due to the wide range of commercially viable industrial applications such as visible and ultraviolet optoelectronics. The aim of this book is to elucidate the physics of nitride-based materials and related devices, and to provide to graduate students and young researchers a rapid introduction to this burgeoning field. Chapters of tutorial style are of medium length, and have been commissioned from some of the very best experts on each topic, both from academia and from industry. All aspects arising from the dual challenges of achieving high-quality, single crystal material and engineering optoelectronic devices are addressed. In the first chapters, the reader will learn about the nitrides in the context of other semiconductors, and will be exposed to the methods used to grow these materials. The chapters which follow discuss the materials' performance from the point of view of electronic transport, optical and structural properties. Finally, an extensive review of device applications is provided in the area of modern transistors, ultraviolet detectors and light emitters.

Customer Reviews:
Thorough but outdated reference book.......2005-09-20
This book provides a compilation of articles, some previously published, on the material properties of various group III nitride semiconductors such as GaN, InN and BN. Multiple phases are covered where applicable, such as cubic, hexagonal and wurtzitic BN. The book is broken up into chapters, each of which focuses on a specific topic of the nitrides as a whole. These chapters include fabrication, mechanical properties, thermodynamics and phase changes, electro-optical properties, and surface properties. The range of topics covered is very broad for the different nitrides, and the references included in each section provide a good resource for further research. Overall, a good book though it is outdated now and I would recommend against purchasing it.

Book Description
This classic Quantitative Methods for Business book is designed to provide learners with a conceptual understanding of the role that quantitative methods play in the decision-making process. It describes the many quantitative methods that have been developed over the years, explains how they work, and shows how the decision maker can apply and interpret data. The book has been written with the non-mathematician in mind; most importantly, it is applications-oriented. In each chapter a problem is described in conjunction with the quantitative procedure being introduced. The authors have found that this approach helps to motivate by demonstrating not only how the procedure works, but also how it can contribute to the overall decision-making process.

Customer Reviews:
Nice, if you like fondant.......2001-08-09
These fun-shaped cakes do not require special pans, but some do require some sculpting skills. All are covered with rolled fondant, which most folks who grew up in the US with Mom's buttercream frosting tend to find too sweet and "strange" in texture. Nice book for what it is, but probably not highly useful to most US home bakers. I bake and decorate five or six cakes most weeks, but I wouldn't bake any from this book.
quick and easy............2001-05-10
This book had several pictures of the overall look but used equipment or unusual items to cut or decorate with. The general ideas are easy to copy if you have the eye for it.
Great color photos; sugarpaste method.......1998-07-28
This book has wonderful and creative ideas for cakes. It is applicable to both adults and children, but beware it uses the sugarpaste method. If you prefer the Wilton method of buttercream icing, find another book; this one is not easily converted.
