Essential, but don't pay too much.......2004-10-20
As any world traveler will tell you, Lonely Planet Guides are the best. Don't pay too much for this book though. You can buy it new on the Lonely Planet website for $17.99. Some private sellers (not Amazon) are selling it for way too much!
Amazon.com
Lonely Planet is ready to ease your way through Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia with this thorough first-edition guide. "The tourist brochures bill Malawi as 'the warm heart of Africa' and, for once, the hype is true; Malawi's scenery is stunning and wonderfully varied, and (although we hate to generalize) Malawians really do seem to be among the friendliest people you could meet anywhere" is how author David Else, who has traveled extensively all over Africa, introduces the book. This country offers the magnificent beauty and interesting wildlife found in Lake Malawi, wildlife parks, national parks, and forest reserves. Its compact size makes Malawi an excellent jumping-off point to venture into the less tourist-ready marvels of Mozambique and Zambia.
In addition to helping you find your way around and the best places to stay, this book will help you tell your red bishops from your sunbirds, your rollers from your hoopoes ... and that's only the bird section. Cultural and historical information ranges from the Stone Age to African kings, from Dr. Livingstone to President Banda. Shaded sidebars provide additional information on topics such as tea growing, on-line services, driving, Islam, economic swings, ecology, food taxes, and the effects of colonialism. A useful index gives an overview of the maps provided (36 of them) along with page numbers for easy reference.

Don't forget the new edition..........2001-01-13
"Lonely Planet: Southern Africa" is more complete (it covers the entire area from Zambia and Malawi to South Africa) and more recent (September 2000).
Zambia is in small type for a reason..........2000-09-03
I bought this book before I went for a four month stay in Zambia. I soon realized that 'Zambia' on the cover was in small type for a reason. The bulk of the book is on Malawi, and the author gives very little detail to the Zambia section. I was quite disappointed, as I was glad simply to FIND something with 'Zambia' written on it! There was useful information in the Zambia section, but the Kwacha amounts were far off the mark, due to high inflation rates. I found myself constantly having to flip back to the Malawi section of the book to see if relevant information could be found there.
This is a good book - I've found most Lonely Planet books to be excellent, though - but if you're looking for a great deal of information on Zambia itself, this is not the book for you.
The best thing so far...........2000-04-05
LP is second to none in practical travel advice. This guide makes no exception. We were the first to actually use the guide book even a little before the publication date. We used it in all three countries. The only thing I might critisize is that Malawians are really not *that* friendly (Zambians are), but opinions differ about this. Prices in $ would be better.
A Useful Guide.......1999-03-03
This book, to use a cliche, was my Bible while I was in Malawi. The information is good and generally accurate. Except for Lilongwe, I found the summaries on the cities to be a little too short. Also, since the kwatcha (Malawian currency) has recently been floated, the prices are all quite a bit off.

I can say that kenya is a nice and safe country to travel. I did camping safaris and trekking mount kenya for 6 days sirimon chogoria route ,oh beautiful vegetation. Guide and porters were great helper , food was nice , The trip was well organised. Mountsafaris are trusted , as i sent them 1500 us dollar deposite for my 3 weeks horiday , and everything work perfect .They booked the , hotel , organise everything for my trip , so when i come everything was ready .They picked me from the airport on time , direct to the hotel ,following the trip start.
Camping was fun , Mountsafaris staff were friendly , very safe with them both on the mountains and on safari . Their camps have all facility.
Mountsafaris prices are fair . Their prices are all incrusive , like , pick ups from the airport, park fees, transport by landcruser with open roof. tour driver ,food three meals a day ,cook .
. I can definitely recommend Mountsafaris adventure they're cheaper compared to others companys ,they have Good services , knowledgeable and reliable Tour Operators and offer a really good range of trekking mount kenya , camping and lodge safaris .

Good introduction, but not enough on the trekking peaks.......2003-02-13
I found this book a good introduction to anyone expecting to go trekking in East Africa. It goes over, in substantial detail, all the factors you may face (medicine, visas, hotels, transportation, tours, trails, etc.). However, there is very little on the trekking peaks, which I thought would be the most interesting portion of the book. For example, on Mt Kilimanjaro there are only maybe 5-6 pages, with only an overview description of the routes. If you are looking for overall trekking in East Africa, this is good book, but if you are looking for info on the trekking peaks, there are other, more specific guides, that may be more helpful.
Essential luggage items: meds, visas and Lonely Planet.......1999-01-20
I used this book to plan and complete a Kilimanjaro climb, a Tanzanian safari (Serengeti, Olduvai Gorge, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara) and a trip up the coast of Kenya. The book was more than helpful; it was essential to the success of the trip. Helpful information is complete, accurate and relevant: exactly what you will find in the Lonely Planet Trekking guide. The helpful information -- routes, housing, food, currency, gear, etc. -- are tools to keep you safe, healthy, prepared and even comfortable. The essential information is much more: it gives you a feel for where you are going and what's important about being there. Descriptions of languages, religions, customs, history, geography, geology, climate, etc., gave me a deeper awareness of the countries I was navigating through. This book is strong on both counts. Here's an example: The vocabulary lists were really helpful in opening conversations with staff, villagers and border officials. However, the book's essential advice was to just try your best at speaking Swahili, and the people you meet will respond very warmly to your having made the effort. The results were heartwarming, and they opened the doors to other discoveries I could not have made otherwise. The book itself is a valuable commodity. On Kilimanjaro I leafed through the chapters for maps and plant descriptions. The book so fascinated my guide that I gave him my copy as a parting present (though I couldn't part with it on the climb since it was the only map & route description we had!) Note that the Lonely Planet Trekking books do not promise to be field guides for the areas they describe: bring another volume(s) to help identify the flora and fauna you encounter.

Book Description
The Pigman's return ...
Four months after the Pigman died, John and Lorraine are passing by their old friend's empty house when they receive the shock of their lives: An elderly man has taken up residence in the abandoned home. Convinced this down-and-out recluse is a sign from beyond the grave, John and Lorraine decide they've been given a chance to make up for what happened to the Pigman -- a chance to make things right, once and for all.
Customer Reviews:
What happened after The Pigman died?.......2005-01-28
How did John and Lorraine's life change after this experience? It started out pretty good. John gave up drinking and started smoking spinach (spinach?) cigarettes at Lorraine's urging. John and Lorraine yell at anyone who's mean to the lunch lady. But their lives are still going nowhere. They meet another old man and try to do it over the right way this time but it's just not the same. The new old man is cranky and rude, the kids aren't really needed in this story as the lunch lady befriends the old man and takes care of everything. The Game of Life was interesting but that's about it.
It definately did not feel like you were stepping into a teen's world. It just seemed like a grown up who had fond memories of drinking, smoking, swearing, cutting class, driving crazy and has major gambling problems (He also has fantasies that he could meet a nice girl who would be fine with all this). This sequel to The Pigman was totally unbelievable and I would reccommend that you skip this book and write your own sequel, I know it would be better than this one.
John and Lorraine's relationship stays respectable. The word sex is mentioned a lot but not as it relates to John and Lorraine. I would agree that the book would be rated PG-13.
The pIGMAN.......2003-03-21
I find this book to be very well written. I also think The Pigman is a very sad book that could bring out strong emotion from any reader. This is not one of the books I would normally read but it did impress me. Even though I liked the book, I would not consider The Pigman to be one of my all time favorite books. This book started out slowly, and I had to keep my eyes from drifting off the page, but by the time the major conflicts had been revealed, I could not put the book down.
(4-1/2 stars) Even better than the first.......2002-05-30
The Pigman is one of my favorite books, so of course I was ecstatic when I discovered that Paul Zindel wrote a followup. And it turns out that The Pigman's Legacy is even better. John and Lorraine have now turned sixteen and continue on zany adventures, as well as discussing the pros and cons of their own life.
The only problem with this book is the same problem that came with the first book, and that is a very important outcome that is given away in the introduction (they call it "The Promise"). My suggestion is to skip the promise and go on with the rest of the book. You'll enjoy it.
outstanding.......2001-12-25
This book was so good that i could never put it down. I read this book for a test in school and i got every question right! Paul Zidel is a great author and one of my favorites. This story basically ends what the first Pigman story didnt. It can teach children lots of important morals in life by John and Lorraines experiances. The way that this story is written is almost like watching a movie in the theaters. Believe me it takes alot to have sit and read a book. I would of never found reading interesting if it wasnt for this book!
koolie.......2001-08-26
This book was a great sequel to The Pigman, the ending was great.. i would read the first one before this one

Book Description
The result of 3 decades of original research and instruction by internationally referenced authors, Drs. Joseph Altman and Shirley A. Bayer, the Atlas of Prenatal Rat Brain Development provides a complete, state-of-the-art presentation of the developing prenatal rat brain. With the aid of advanced computer graphics, Altman and Bayer revolutionize the study of the highly vulnerable prenatal brain and bring us closer to understanding the dynamics of its development, its malfunctions, deficits, and abnormalities. Their contributions to the field of brain research, and hence to our knowledge of brain disorders, are unsurpassed. The Atlas contains more than 265 platesÛeach plate accompanied by a computer-aided drawing, a 3-dimensional reconstruction of brain slices never before achieved with such accuracy and clarity, that assists in the visualization of the brain and of the relationships among various brain regions. A new, user-friendly alphanumeric coding system is used, allowing for easy identification of brain regions.

There are other rat brain atlases available, but this is the definitive atlas of the early and late gestational age rat brain. It shows the development of anatomical structures from embryonic day 13 to the day of birth, using section-by-section photomicrographs together with accompanying line diagrams. Over 750 structures are identified, giving functional as well as anatomical descriptions, including up to eight transmitter-delineated cell groups on each accompanying map. The emphasis throughout is on facilitating the identification of structures for those without advanced training in anatomy, enhanced by a comprehensive index of structures, abbreviations, temporal appearance, and spatial orientation to make pathfinding as easy as possible. With over 230 micrographs of superb quality, Chemical neuroanatomy of the prenatal rat brain: a developmental atlas will be an essential resource for all researchers in developmental and molecular neurobiology.

Book Description
By turns harrowing and hilarious, this adroitly narrated winner of the Toronto Book Award re-creates the world in the imagination of Thelma. It’s a world in which she can escape some of her more painful childhood realities, like those games her father likes to make her play, where he’s the boss and she the naughty secretary. And her mother so fiercely favors her younger brother, the cherubic Willy, that Thelma finds herself perpetually in emotional exile. No wonder Thelma asks practically every adult she meets to adopt her. Along Thelma’s bumpy way from a rural English village to Canada to a law degree at Oxford, she meets many potential parents and even makes some friends, but it is with the companions of her fertile imagination—with the scaredy-baby Janawee, moody and timid Ginniger, and big, strong, stoic Heroin—that Thelma finds comfort. With them, too, she loses an already tenuous connection to reality, though ultimately Thelma’s spirit and humor prove to be as indomitable as her wit. “Moving and comic at once.... Hallucinatory, hilarious, and haunting.”—Boston Globe “Prickly, unsentimental...a portrait of terrible comic humanity.”—New York Times Book Review “Mesmerizing.... Lush, visceral prose ... rings with an authority rarely found in first novels.”—Washington Post Book World “A novel of astonishing power .... An instantaneous classic.”—Baltimore Sun “Elegant ... sings with an almost Victorian delicacy and sophistication.”—San Francisco Chronicle
Customer Reviews:
THIS IS A DARK LITTLE BOOK, CERTAINLY NOT FOR EVERYONE.......2006-12-11
I did like this book. I read it today, in a few hours time. It was good; it was just very different. And there is nothing wrong with different.
The story revolves around Thelma. She has a mother who resents her from the start, a sexually abusive father, a brother who is conceived in an affair her father is not even aware of - {the brother is a whole different story!} - talk about dysfunctional families, this is THE one.
Thelma makes up friends in her mind since she has none that are real. No one likes her family and in the end they move from England to Canada to try and start over. Life doesn't change for anyone, especially poor Thelma who is made fun of, ignored both by children and her family, (excepting for her sexually sick Dad!), and invents her own little make-believe world.
It is a good book, just very odd and different. This book goes into the world of the insane, self-abusive, self-starvation, and was sometimes shocking. Most of the book tells of Thelma's life while she is a child and I found her life to be sad.
However, it is a good read, albeit different. It kept my attention -- certainly enough to read in one sitting! -- and Thelma DOES have a sense of humor all throughout her life. I was laughing at times.
In the end, she does, in her way, triumph, and you will end this book with a good feeling. The subject matter is sad, true, and sometimes shocking. Like mentioned, it is not for everyone.
However, I would say to check it out and just be prepared to find it a tad depressing. You will feel sorry for Thelma, but you will enjoy Thelma too. You will want to protect her.
One of the best books I have ever read? Hardly. However, it is a good book.
Thank you!
Pam
Intense and engrossing!.......2006-07-25
Definitely not a book everyone would enjoy due to the subjects of child abuse (mental and physical) and mental illness. Once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down until you learn what happens to Thelma. The book follows her from infancy to adulthood. It's a very intense book, yet there were parts that made me laugh out loud. One of the best books I've read all year......
Engrossing.......2005-05-19
Indeed, this book was engrossing.
Thelma is a starkly honest and brutally refreshing narrator. I did end up feeling sorry for her, what with all the horrible experiences she went through. I really disliked her father for what he did with her - playing naughty secretary and the like.
This book will draw a lot of sympathy from readers towards the little girl that is Thelma. How Thelma asks various people to become her parents is absolutely heart-wrenching.
The novel is about Thelma's coming of age - written in seemingly short stories about the different stages of her life.
Despite her rough experiences in childhood, she manages to get a scholarship to law school.
Mouthing the Words is about Thelma coming in to know herself, of accepting herself, trying to find out who she is - and, ultimately, finding that much-needed courage to mouth the words.
I really enjoyed this book. I could really relate to Thelma being a misfit.
Ms. Gibb writes powerfully, honestly, and expressively. I think she has really captured the essence of what it is like to speak through a child's eyes, in the face of neglect, abuse, and other experiences.
I had the honor of attending one of Ms. Gibb's readings, and even got my books signed. She is a very nice lady, and I am eagerly waiting to read her other books.
The Globe and Mail is not wrong!.......2003-07-27
"Mouthing the Words" is written so well. I've not read anything like it before. The story is a dark one, but the way that it is delivered is brilliant. We would all share terrible stories if we were able to do so in such an interesting way.
I was totally engrossed from the beginning. This is a novel you will read more than once. See for yourself! Her writing is gorgeous.
Can I have a resolution please?.......2003-07-16
I tip my hat to Ms.Gibb for her convincing portrayal of Thelma, a girl abused into insanity. But after a classic build up, there is a common let down. The story ends with no real resolution. That alone took away 2 stars from an otherwise masterful literary piece.
