          Description:
We examined how chronic nitrogen (N) enrichment of pine and hardwood forest stands has affected the relative abundance, functional capacity, and activity of soil bacteria and fungi. During Fall 2002 we collected one soil core (5.6cm diameter; organic horizon plus 10cm of mineral soil) from each of four 5mx5m subplots within the control, low N (5gNm^-^2 per year), and high N (15gNm^-^2 per year) plots in both the hardwood and pine stands at the Chronic Nitrogen Amendment Study at Harvard Forest. The samples were analyzed for total and active bacterial and fungal biomass, microbial catabolic response profiles, the activities of cellulolytic and ligninolytic enzymes, and total, labile and microbially derived organic carbon (C). Live, fine roots were also collected from the control and low N pine plots and analyzed for ectomycorrhizal fungal community composition and diversity. Active fungal biomass was 27-61% and 42-69% lower in the fertilized compared to control plots in the hardwood and pine stands, respectively. Active bacterial biomass was not greatly affected by N additions, resulting in significantly lower fungal:bacterial biomass ratios in the N-treated plots. This shift in microbial community composition was accompanied by a significant reduction in the activity of phenol oxidase, a lignin-degrading enzyme produced by white-rot fungi. In the pine stand, ectomycorrhizal fungal community diversity was lower in the low N-treated plot than in the control plot. Differences in ectomycorrhizal community structure were also detected between control and fertilized pine plots, including a reduction in those species with the highest relative frequencies in the control community. Finally, N enrichment altered the pattern of microbial substrate use, with the relative response to the addition of carboxylic acids and carbohydrates being significantly lower in the N-treated plots, even after the data were normalized to account for differences in microbial biomass. These patterns are consistent with lower decomposition rates and altered N cycling observed previously at this site.

            Description:
The structure of Scandinavian boreal forests has changed in many ways as a result of modern intensive forestry. One of the most fundamental changes is the loss of coarse woody debris (CWD), which has adversely affected many wood-inhabiting species. The consequences of reductions in CWD and its variability have received much attention in the literature recently. However, a neglected substratum change with possible profound ecological implications is enhanced tree growth rate due to forestry practices such as thinning and fertilization. In the study presented here we investigated how tree growth rate influenced the decay capacity of two threatened species, Phlebia centrifuga and Fomitopsis rosea, and a common species, F. pinicola, of saprotrophic wood-decay fungi. Their decay capacity was measured as the weight loss they caused in Picea abies wood-discs categorised as fast-, moderately-, and slow-grown. The results show that the rates of decay caused by all three species were highest in fast-grown wood cut in thinnings, and lowest in slow-grown wood cut in extensively managed stands. None of the stands had been fertilised. Interestingly, rate of decay caused by the common generalist fungus F. pinicola was 50% higher in fast-grown wood than in slow-grown wood, suggesting that the turnover of dead wood is much higher in intensively managed forests. Thus, the time window for wood-living species to colonize CWD, which is a transient habitat even in old-growth forests, is even shorter in intensively managed forests. This may adversely affect species with poor dispersal ability. Moreover, F. rosea decayed the slow-grown wood significantly more rapidly than the other species. This suggests that it may be adapted to such substrates, and that F. rosea may be favoured in old-growth forests where trees generally have slower growth rates than in managed forest. For P. centrifuga, there was a large variation in its decay capacity among genets, indicating a need for further studies on the genetics of threatened wood-fungi, given the species' fragmented distribution.

              Description:
One of the most conspicuous soil elements of the tropical cloud forest in central Veracruz, mycelial cord-forming fungi, is strongly affected by the conversion of forest into shaded coffee plantations. Mycelial cord-forming fungi are less abundant, smaller and have a sharper mortality rate in shaded coffee plantations than in relatively conserved forest sites. I present evidence that suggests that changes in soil microenvironmental conditions affect the abundance of mycelial cord forming fungi. These results lend further support to growing evidence that the biodiversity of the understorey and soil are not being conserved within shaded coffee plantations. This contrasts markedly with other studies that suggest that over storey biota is effectively conserved by this conversion.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Original Hollywood Story.......2007-08-15

Hollywood is the setting for this wonderful novel, but it's not exactly what you'd expect. It's not about the glitz and glamour of being a star, or the hardship of being constantly in the spotlight. It's about Egg (formerly Victoria). Her mother is a former A-list actress, and her father creates the monsters that make movie audiences scream all over the world. Egg is a teenaged girl who has named herself after her favorite sci-fi movie character, complete with the requisite shaved head and cape that the Terminal Earth heroine wears. Despite her eccentricities, Egg is just another teenage girl trying to figure out herself and her life.

Cecil Castellucci shows herself to be a talented author in this powerful debut novel. Egg's fresh voice brings a spark to the story, and the skill with which Castellucci brings her protagonist to life is very impressive. There are a few times when the background characters feel less-than-real, but it doesn't make much of a difference to the wonderfulness of the story as a whole; it's hardly noticeable, as the focus is on Egg, who is always real. BOY PROOF is an engaging and satisfying story by a brilliant author.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshingly unique and unforgettable character.......2007-04-13

Boy Proof is the story of high school senior Victoria Jurgen, who prefers to be called "Egg." Victoria/Egg is an unabashed geek, and self-selected social outcast. She dresses in a long white cloak and shaves her head, in homage to her favorite movie character, Egg from the science fiction adventure Terminal Earth. She sits by herself at lunchtime and reads. Her only school participation is in the Science Fiction club and as the photographer for the school paper. She's very bright, and accustomed to doing well in school, with a particular interest in World History, but she's not very good with people.

Egg considers herself "Boy Proof". She deliberately makes herself unattractive, wearing baggy clothing and no make-up, and genuinely believes herself to be invisible. Imagine her surprise when a new student, the handsome and popular Max Carter, starts to pay attention to her. She resists his friendship, but is eventually drawn in by the things that they have in common. The two soon share a bond, but things are complicated by Max's decision to date another, more conventional, girl.

I love Egg. She's smart, talented, and funny, but she's also insecure, and sometimes downright mean to other people. I cringed for her at times, and wanted to scold her at others (she's particularly harsh to a perfectly nice girl from the Science Fiction club who just wants to be her friend, and to her mother). But through it all, I identified with her, and wanted her to succeed.

Egg is refreshingly unique, and impossible to forget. I especially like the fact that she's not conventional, and not afraid to go her own way, despite the pressures of high school. I think that anyone who has ever felt that sense of otherness while in school will be able to relate to Egg on one level or another. I was sorry to see the book end, because I would have liked to spend more time with Egg (though Castellucci certainly wraps things up in a satisfying manner). Highly recommended for kids 13 and up, especially girls and/or sci-fi buffs.

Victoria "Egg" Jurgen is a loner and she likes it that way. Dressed in her long white cloak, with a shaved head and drawn-in eyebrows, she doesn't talk to people and doesn't want people to talk to her. Her look and attitude cause her to be "boy proof," according to her mother. Egg's unique style is fashioned after her favorite character from the movie Terminal Earth, which she has seen multiple times and as many as four times in one day. Egg refers to herself as a cinephile. She loves the film industry, especially the Sci-Fi world.

Egg considers herself the smartest person at her school and feels Valedictorian is pretty much in the bag. That is until Max shows up in her AP classes. Egg's first impression of Max is that he stinks, literally. The only thing she likes about him at all is his t-shirt that has the name of one of her favorite comic books on it. Max seems to be everywhere. He is a wonderful artist and joins the school's newspaper where Egg acts as a photo journalist. Getting to know Max turns out to be a life-changing experience for Egg.

As senior year progresses, Egg becomes more involved in activities that put her in contact with people. She learns what it means to be a friend and how important it is to have them in your life. She realizes that people aren't always as they seem and that being perfect isn't necessary for happiness. Egg learns a lot in one year's time; even how to leave Egg behind and become simply Victoria.

Cecil Castellucci has written a thoughtful story about the sensitive time in every young adult's life - self-discovery. Written in first person, this novel launches you into Egg's world and leaves you feeling as though you are experiencing life through her eyes. The reader will sympathize with the ups and downs of the typical teenage angst that Victoria goes through in order to, once and for all, decide what it really takes for her to be happy.

Egg (née Victoria) Jurgen re-christened herself after the heroine in her favorite sci-fi movie in hopes that some of the heroine's bravery and good fortune would rub off on her. Instead, she's doomed to pretend to like her fate of being Invisible Girl, who speaks to no one and has the favor returned. That is, until a new boy, Max Carter, arrives at school. He challenges her, academically and socially, and she isn't sure at first if she wants to accept his challenge, if it means shedding her tough persona and letting someone else into her life and her head. This book examplifies how one person can change someone else's life, and I really enjoyed it.

                                        Book Description

Most human cancers display a myriad of genetic changes, a characteristic often attributed to genome instability. Cytogenetic studies have long identified chromosomal aberrations as a hallmark of human tumours, but the causes and consequences of genomic defects in tumours still remain to be fully understood. In particular, the role of genome instability in the development of human cancers as well as its relevance to treatment paradigms continue to evoke intense debate. To address these critical issues it is clearly important to understand the mechanisms that give rise to genome instability. This book reviews both genetic and biochemical data on the origin of genome instability and its impact on carcinogenesis. Reflecting recent discoveries and ongoing research, it discusses DNA repair mechanisms and hereditary cancer syndromes, as well as checkpoint mechanisms operating to safeguard chromosome integrity during cell cycle progression. Moreover, it summarises our current understanding of the various defects that may allow cancer cells to rapidly accumulate critical mutations and evolve, through processes reminiscent of Darwinian selection, an increasingly aggressive behaviour. Hopefully, this book will stimulate thought, discussion and experimentation, and serve as a rich source of information for a wide audience, including advanced students, researchers and clinical oncologists.

                                                    Book Description

This second edition of Modeling and Computation of Boundary Layer Flows extends the topic to include compressible flows including the energy equation and non-constant fluid properties in the continuity and momentum equations. The necessary additions are included in new chapters, leaving the first nine chapters to serve as an introduction to incompressible flows that can be used as an introduction to computational fluid dynamics with emphasis on the solution of the boundary-layer equations and the modeling and computation of boundary-layer flows. It also provides readers with a good understanding of the basic principles of fluid dynamics and numerical methods. A variety of readers, including undergraduate and graduate students, teachers or scientists working in aerodynamics or hydrodynamics will find the text interesting. The subjects covered in this book include laminar and, turbulent boundary layers and laminar–turbulent transition. The viscous–inviscid coupling between the boundary layer and the inviscid flow is also addressed. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible flows are considered. Physical and numerical aspects of boundary-layer flows are described in detail and a large number of homework problems are included. The book is accompanied by computer programs to solve boundary layer equations, the Orr-Sommerfeld equation and to compute transitions. Those programs can be used for classroom work but also for industry applications. Additional programs for three-dimensional flows are available from the first author.

Area Women Unite! In this sharp and sophisticated collection of essays, columnist Patricia Pearson takes us on a hilarious tour of our twenty-first-century obsessions and distractions.

Patricia Pearson is a working woman, wife, and mother on the verge. Whether it's being humiliated by the "Beauty Bullies" at the Lancome counter or failing to live up to the "Serene Mother" ideal, Pearson has had enough of negotiating our present-day myths and fads. In fact, she's formed a few opinions on the matter and can't wait to share them with you.

In Area Woman Blows Gasket, Pearson plumbs every facet of modern life, marriage, and motherhood, from choosing the right vegan-bran-hemp diet for your family to confronting your husband's irrational fear of mayonnaise to finding a way to return to work and not turn your child into a contract killer. Adult education classes, therapy, $100 haircuts, the latest news on what causes cancer, Christmas shopping-all come into sharp focus with the help of Pearson's comic eye. Her wry brand of wisdom is a refreshing and long-awaited release from our confusing and often contradictory world.

This book of essays is one of the most entertaining musings on family life (with several great side trips -- such as a hilarious piece on quitting smoking) that I've ever read. Several of the essays were so funny, that I was crying while laughing. I had to read several of them aloud to my husband because he felt so left out of the jokes.

High marks to this absolutely hysterical collection of tales from the domestic frontier!

Take a look at the lighter, funnier sometimes sad side of life through the eyes and thoughts of Pearson, a columnist and writer for publications across the nation. This satirical look will leave you wanting the next installment from this brilliant author. You will never look at life the same, which may not be a good thing, if you aren't ready for change.
