The single most important vine book since Darwin........2005-06-03
Starting with Darwin's Botany of Climbing plants, you'll only find 16 books dedicated to vines (per Library of Congress) the latest is this one written by the late Wilbur Duncan. Written in 1967, it was later published in 1976.
Small enough to go into the field and it has nice line drawings, maps, and keys. It does; however, require that you know botanical terms as he pulls no frilly punches about botanical descriptions.
Botanical names morph and species are always in dispute but you won't find a more useable classic.

Book Description
The old, converted vegetable shop where Tillie lives is more like a madhouse than a home. Tillie's mother, Beatrice, is bitter and cruel, yet desperate for her daughters' love. Her sister, Ruth, suffers epileptic fits and sneaks cigarettes every chance she gets. In the midst of chaos, Tillie struggles to keep her focus and dreams alive. Tillie -- keeper of rabbits, dreamer of atoms, true believer in life, hope, and the effect of gamma rays on man-in-the-moon marigolds.

Good quick read.......2006-06-23
I thought this play was an entertaining quick read. It was certainly different. I'll admit I bought the book because of the title and cover art. This play wasn't life changing or a play I'll treasure for ever but since it IS, as I've said, a quick read and entertaining: it's worth giving it a try! Most importantly, it isn't your run of the mill play about a family. It certainly is unique.
Question about the book ........2006-02-19
Well , I have read the book . To me its quite interesting . ?But I don't really understand about the book . But i want to know who is the girl on the cover page of the book(The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds) .
can anybody tell me ?
Sublime Experiments in Mutation.......2004-11-12
I see this as a play about the power of hatred and pain versus the power of awe and wonder. In each individual there is a struggle between the two, particularly Beatrice, the mother of Tillie (aka Matilda) and Ruth. The love and trauma of family is especially harsh because the effects are the deepest. In this play, about a mother and her two daughters, the spectre of family life is exposed as dangerous and hurtful, despite a natural inclination against such negativity. In that confusing place resides the plays sublime nature, where youthful spiritual proclivity battles angst filled self hating adulthood. Simply written, possible to be read in an hour, "The Effects" are moving.
As reviewed by a 17 year old.......2003-12-08
Now generally I don't take to books that were written around the time my parents were born. In reality, I really don't take to books much at all. But The Effects of Gamma Rays On Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds seemed to make the boredom that I usually associate with reading cease, as I downed the entire two-act play during a class period.
This book was your not-so-simple story of a little girl's triumph in overcoming the realms of an emotionally abusive household. This little girl was named Tillie, and she was brought up in an old, converted vegetable store with her airhead sister Ruth and sadly entertaining mother Beatrice. They reside there with an elderly mute woman known as Nanny and try to survive in some sort of harmony.
Beatrice is insane. It is clearly stated in the book without the reader knowing how or why she became this way. Her daughter Ruth is desperately in need of attention and almost always selfish. This is a complete opposite of Tillie, the independent main character who finds an outlet from her family in science projects. This is an outlet that in turn becomes her greatest talent and creates the main moral in the story.
The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds is not what I would consider a classic because I don't think it ever really got the acclaim or recognition it deserved. But it is still a story that will always provide entertainment whether you read it or see it. Because of this I would have to suggest that this book be read by intelligent young adults or adults themselves. This way the reader (or audience member) can understand the all of the humor expressed through Beatrice and the symbolism between the marigold and Tillie. I would have to give this book a total of four and a quarter stars. It is a great quick-read and I'm almost certain any theatre group would do it justice on stage. The author, Paul Zindel, is loved throughout the world and was the 2002 recipient of the Margaret A. Edwards award for his book "The Pigman."
Book in genral.......2002-11-05
So, I liked the book; I could relate to the characters, just because they seemed so real and not fake. Paul Zindel I believe Is an author with natural talent, and links real life into his books, to make his characters pop alive. The title alone got me interested in it. it took me an hour and a half to read it because it was so intreging I couldn't take my eyes off of it. I It really upset me when their mom killed their rabbit though. So it's filled with laughter and tears, murder (the rabbit), and lieing. Truley a surreal book.

From artificial intelligence to AIDs.......2004-09-10
Exploring the state of the world, Bass spent hours, sometimes days, with 11 of today's ground-breaking scientists. He distilled the results, keeping the interview format and dispensing.
He discusses sex and female strategies with behavioral biologist Sarah Hrdy, AIDS research with Luc Montagnier, the French scientist who first isolated the virus, space-age archaelogy with geologist and Apollo scientist Farouk El-Baz, artificial intelligence and selfish genes with zoologist Richard Dawkins. Many of the pieces naturally concern AIDS, medical breakthroughs and gene research.
Perhaps the book's most thoughtful piece is "Plague," the interview with Dr. Jonathan Mann, founder of the Global Program on AIDS. Mann's persepective on social and human rights implications is thorough, calm and flawlessly reasoned. His measured tone seems to rob the issue of its polarizing energy, fitting AIDS into the context of modern life and technological advances.
Bass' interviews are well organized, integrating personal background with scientific method and discovery and speculations on future advances.
An informative collection of conversations.......2001-08-19
In my experience, the 'conversation' format invariable leads to interesting books. Bass' 'Reinventing the Future' is no exception. There are 11 conversations with leading scientists, spread over 240 pages. That means that every scientist gets sufficient space to explore his or her ideas in depth. The selection of people is imaginative: there is a mix of discipline, gender, culture and character which is well judged. The conversations are invariably well crafted; it's obvious that Bass has done his homework very well. A number of chapters are so insightful that I keep returning to this book again and again. James Black, a pharmacologist who discovered cimetidine and beta blockers, offers a view on pharmaceutical Discovery research which, at the time of the interview (1989), must have been simply visionary. I also derived much insight from Thomas Adeoye Lambo's fusion of Western and traditional ideas on mental illness when studying psychotics and schizophrenics in the villages of his native Nigeria. As an update on important scientific theories this book is slightly dated by now. But as an account of how great scientific personalities work it remains as fresh and relevant as when it was written.

Book Description
Included in this volume are the Invited Talks given at the 5th International Congress of Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The authors of these papers are all acknowledged masters of their fields, having been chosen through a rigorous selection process by a distinguished International Program Committee. This volume presents an overview of contemporary applications of mathematics, with the coverage ranging from the rhythms of the nervous system, to optimal transportation, elasto-plasticity, computational drug design, hydrodynamic and meteorological modeling, and valuation in financial markets. Many papers are direct products of the computer revolution: grid generation, multi-scale modeling, high-dimensional numerical integration, nonlinear optimization, accurate floating-point computations and advanced iterative methods. Other papers demonstrate the close dependence on developments in mathematics itself, and the increasing importance of statistics. Additional topics relate to the study of properties of fluids and fluid-flows, or add to our understanding of Partial Differential Equations.

A help in study .......2004-12-05
The tractate Taanit is a particularly rich one .This translation will enable the English only , or English- primarily reader to get a general sense of it. However real Jewish learning must be done as communal study . And the reader is recommended to connect with a Jewish communal framework , to find those most learned and to learn with them.
I would also say that there is no substitute for learning in the original Hebrew- Aramaic. But this present translation can be of help to those whose English is stronger than their Hebrew. As for those without much Hebrew at all this volume can give a start in learning a world which otherwise would be closed.
Easy access to Talmud.......2000-05-29
This edition is perfect if your not too hot on your aramaic. It has a clear lay out and a good translation. It provides an easy to follow english version with the hebrew layed out along side and tries its best to keep the style and order of the original.
Book Description
I've been accused of a lot of things in my life, but ducking an issue isn't one of them. I entered the Army in 1964 when it wasn't a popular thing to do. I did 20 years' service to my country as an Intelligence NCO and Officer, spent more than 12 continuous years overseas in some places most people wouldn't have volunteered to be in, doing things most wouldn't do. I did this at a time when many of my own countrymen, people I defended and supported, disliked what I was doing. When I was first exposed to the possibility of remote viewing as an intelligence threat, I took it very seriously because the evidence already extant 23 years ago was significantly compelling to demand attention.
I have now spent 23 years of my life carefully studying remote viewing within research laboratories and applying it in hundreds of intelligence collection circumstances. I have visited other countries and met with remote viewers who are participants in both research and applications, in both civilian and military labs. And, whether you want to call it paranormal or not, I'm more convinced than ever that there is something going on that we should be very concerned about.
. . . It is an inescapable fact that terrorist activities and the efforts of terrorists across the world have more than tripled in a little less than two decades. I've been dealing with it for 28 years and it's only getting worse. . . . I find it silly and irrelevant, stupid and ignorant, to continue to ignore a proven intelligence capability that might be used in our defense.
Customer Reviews:
I am appalled at the events described in this book..........2006-02-15
As a US citizen, I am both embarrassed and angry. I am embarrassed that anyone in the Federal government, and particularly anyone with ties to the military, would treat remote viewing with any credibility whatsoever. I am also angry that my tax dollars have been used to support programs of this type.
One does not have to be a "hard core skeptic" to understand that McConeagle has found a niche for himself deluding others about his so-called abilities. The basic difference between McConeagle and other charlatans is that (1) my tax money helped pay for his activities, and (2) his "work" may have influenced some important decisions.
No "psychic" or "remote viewer" has ever provided signficiant assistance in any criminal investigation. They simply stand back and make general assertions about the "accuracy" of their work after the fact. The same is true of MConeagle, who fails to offer shred of credible evidence that he has ever successfully performed remote viewing. He has hand-picked some events for which he can at least claim that there was some similarity between his "viewing" and the actual circumstances. It's amazing how a rough sketch can not only fit the profile of the superstructure of a sinking ship, but can also be interpreted as the collapsed walls of a multi-story building destroyed by a car bomb. As a matter of fact, I think it looks quite a bit like the unfinished Death Star from "Star Wars", too.
I'm giving this book one star instead of zero stars simply because I think that it's important for citizens to read this book and then take political action to ensure that programs like this are never funded again.
Excellent history of remote viewing.......2006-01-16
A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure to meet Dr. Edwin May, who was involved in the remote viewing program at SRI. I had read Jim Schnabel's book on remote viewing, and asked Dr. May about it. He told me to read the "Stargate Chronicles" if I really wanted to know the history of what happened in those years.
While Schnabel's book chronicles the SRI side of remote viewing, McMoneagle's book covers the Fort Meade side. This is a very personal account of the Army's remote viewing program told from the viewpoint of the top remote viewer himself. While it is unlikely to convince the hardcore skeptic, it is an interesting and well-written account of a mental technology that deserves respect and further consideration.
Anyone interested in the topic of remote viewing should enjoy this book. Highly recommended.
I can see clearly now--the rain is gone..........2005-05-21
This is the personal story (warts and all)of a man that can literally find lost people (in many cases for years) by "remote viewing" them (a government-funded, double blind studied --protocalled-- aproach). And much more.
Mr. McMoneagle has several other books--and you should read them as well--but this one gives an inside...view...into the man, much of the process itself--and the life that brought him to this point.
It takes courage to write a book like this.
What if your life really were "an open book"?
If you want to understand remote viewing--read this for the inside personal feel of what it felt like to be absolutely elemental in the original Govt. supported "Stargate" program. If you want to understand...more...complex human behavior--you might need to read this book. Ever turned...and made immediate eye contact with someone? READ THIS...
Well, you get the idea!
Heather Raymond AND;
Henry Raymond Author, "The Third Kind of Midnight"
An excellent read on many levels........2004-06-15
As a writer, McMoneagle is evolving and we get the benefit. All his books are worthwhile, I like the personal parts of MIND TREK especially, but this Memoirs is warm, rich and fluent, the kind of writing that makes you want to take time off life to soak in it. It's by far the most readable of his works.
The content is both fascinating and astonishing--one of the most honest books I've read. That covers the mean streets of Miami poverty, the bloody terror of two combat tours in Vietnam, the grueling (and oft mismanaged) psi used in government intelligence under nearly impossible conditions, the labor to document it for science despite politics personal and scientific, and the life, health and relationship fallout woven through the chaos of it all.
This is a story on many levels: Joe is one of those people who've been and done more in their life than most folks do in ten. It's not just his personal evolution but spiritual opening; not just psychic development but interpersonal maturing; it coalesces into a profound integrity and honor found in few humans.
Most recommended.
Remote Viewer Close Up Is A Must Read.......2003-07-23
Having personally known Joe McMoneagle for some five years now, I was amazed at all the things I didn't know about him, but learned from reading his moving and carefully crafted autobiography. The general public will be both entertained and enlightened concerning the world heavyweight champion of RV and the history of remote viewing, and us former intel types will find some of our own memories being awakened by Joe's tales of places and personalities past. This guy has all "the right stuff" and his Stargate Chronicles should be on the shelves of everyone interested in the paranormal and intelligence matters.

Book Description
Despite the enormous influence of Michel Foucault in gender studies, social theory, and cultural studies, his work has been relatively neglected in the study of politics. Although he never published a book on the state, in the late 1970s Foucault examined the technologies of power used to regulate society and the ingenious recasting of power and agency that he saw as both consequence and condition of their operation.
These twelve essays provide a critical introduction to Foucault's work on politics, exploring its relevance to past and current thinking about liberal and neo-liberal forms of government. Moving away from the great texts of liberal political philosophy, this book looks closely at the technical means with which the ideals of liberal political rationalities have been put into practice in such areas as schools, welfare, and the insurance industry.
This fresh approach to one of the seminal thinkers of the twentieth century is essential reading for anyone interested in social and cultural theory, sociology, and politics.
Customer Reviews:
Another book on Foucault? Yes, but this one is different..........1997-04-02
One would think that the last thing the world needs is another book about Michel Foucault. With much relief, I discovered that this collection of essays is not simply another exegesis of the late philosopher's work but instead focuses rather specifically on his implied political theory. This volume seeks to introduce the reader to several political themes running through Foucault's writings and to offer "an analysis of political reason itself, of the mentalities of politics that have shaped our present, the devices invented to give effect to rule, and the ways that these have impacted upon those who have been the subjects of these practices of government" (p.2). This is ambitious agenda, and, on balance, the book succeeds well, despite some of its jargon and abstractions. The focus of the twelve chapters is the "ethical" and "technical" character of liberalism and neo-liberalism as a form of governing. The chapters are a mix of more or less accessible and relevant theoretical papers and ones addressing particular topics such as schooling, urban government, the insurance industry, and forms of communication technologies

I was using this book for a resource in my English class. It proved to be what I needed to get an A+ for my research paper. Totman knows his stuff and the reading was quite easy. I'd recommend any of his books for the college student working on Pre-Modern Japan.
