Places I Never Meant To Be: Original Stories by Censored Writers

In this provocative collection, Judy Blume, the censors' favorite target, assembles an all-star cast of young adult writers who have themselves felt the pain of censorship. Each contributes an original short story and some highly quotable observations on their own experiences and feelings when under attack. "Where once I went to my writing without a backward glance," writes Norma Fox Mazer, "now I sometimes have to consciously clear my mind of those shadowy censorious presences." The entries range from Jacqueline Woodson's ironic story of a neighborhood's casual acceptance of arson, to Harry Mazer's touching tale of a tough kid redeemed by a little boy's adoration. Two stories are especially intriguing to connoisseurs of teen fiction: Chris Lynch's "Lie, No Lie"--a selection that appears not to have made the cut for his novel Whitechurch--in which Pauly sets his friend up for embarrassment in a gay bath house; and the late Norma Klein's "Something Which Is Non-Existent," a previously unpublished story written in 1959 when this much-censored author was in college. Other stories by Katherine Paterson, Rachel Vail, Julius Lester, Walter Dean Myers, Susan Beth Pfeffer, Paul Zindel, Norma Fox Mazer, and David Klass contribute to this showcase of stellar talent. (Ages 11 to 16) --Patty CampbellBook Description
"What effect does [the climate of censorship] have on a writer?....It's chilling. It's easy to become discouraged, to second-guess everything you write. There seemed to be no one to stand up to the censors....so I began to speak out about my experiences. And once I did, I found that I wasn't as alone as I'd thought."
-- from Judy Blume's introduction to Places I Never Meant to Be
Judy Blume is not alone: Many of today's most distinguished authors of books for young people have found their work censored or challenged. Eleven of them have contributed original stories to this collection. Along with a story written by the late Norma Klein when she was a student at Barnard College, they comprise a stunning literary achievement as well as a battle cry against censorship.

The Voice: A Story of Faith and Trust
R. W. Metlen Manufacturer: Paulist Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0809105276 |
Book Description
Expressing a serious message through quirky humor, The Voice is a cartoon-illustrated book about resisting then ultimately yielding to God's call. Like The Giving Tree and Hope for the Flowers, this timeless adult fable has many layers of meaning. Whether being called to discipleship, a new job, a new behavior, or a personal risk, just about everyone will find the book applies to him or her. The story is simple: A man in a rowboat is fishing when a Voice says, "Follow me." The man responds like most of us, by thumbing his nose at the Voice. The boat springs first one then two leaks, which the man blames on the Voice. Then the man discovers that he's stuck. He can't reach his oars to move but he can't step out of the boat to follow. He's sure he will drown either way. The Voice again says, "Follow me" and "I love you." Finally the man takes a risk, steps out of the boat, and discovers he can walk on water. Brilliantly conceived and executed, The Voice is perfect for gift buyers, personal use, and group discussion. Spiritual seekers of all ages and Christians of all denominations will love it. It's also of particular use to vocation directors, retreat directors, people in recovery, counselors and therapists, high school seniors and recent graduates, adult study groups, Confirmation candidates, RCIA candidates, job changers, and anyone in any kind of transition.Customer Reviews:

Edward Lansdale's Cold War (Culture, Politics, and the Cold War)
Jonathan Nashel Manufacturer: University of Massachusetts Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1558494642 |
Book Description
The man widely believed to have been the model for Alden Pyle in Graham Greene's "The Quiet American," Edward G. Lansdale (1908-1987) was a Cold War celebrity. A former advertising executive turned undercover CIA agent, he was credited during the 1950s with almost single-handedly preventing a communist takeover of the Philippines and with helping to install Ngo Dinh Diem as president of the American-backed government of South Vietnam. Adding to his notoriety, during the Kennedy administration Lansdale was put in charge of Operation Mongoose, the covert plot to overthrow the government of Cuba's Fidel Castro by assassination or other means. In this book, Jonathan Nashel reexamines Lansdale's role as an agent of American Cold War foreign policy and takes into account both his actual activities and the myths that grew to surround him. In contrast to previous portraits, which tend to depict Lansdale either as the incarnation of U.S. imperialist ambitions or as a farsighted patriot dedicated to the spread of democracy abroad, Nashel offers a more complex and nuanced interpretation. At times we see Lansdale as the arrogant "ugly American," full of confidence that he has every right to make the world in his own image and utterly blind to his own cultural condescension. This is the Lansdale who would use any conceivable gimmick to serve U.S. aims, from rigging elections to sugaring communist gas tanks. Elsewhere, however, he seems genuinely respectful of the cultures he encounters, open to differences and new possibilities, and willing to tailor American interests to Third World needs.
Rather than attempting to reconcile these apparently contradictory images of Lansdale, Nashel explores the ways in which they reflected a broader tension within the culture of Cold War America. The result is less a conventional biography than an analysis of the world in which Lansdale operated and the particular historical forces that shaped himfrom the imperatives of anticommunist ideology and the assumptions of modernization theory to the techniques of advertising and the insights of anthropology.

An Assessment of the Shipboard Training Effectiveness of the Integrated Damage Control Training Technology (IDCTT) Version 3.0
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423561236 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A079543. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The ability of a ship's crew to control damage is a critical measure of readiness for U.S. Navy ships. Proficiency in this area is largely a function of routine shipboard training. Since damage control skills tend to be perishable if not continuously practiced, shipboard personnel must have an effective means of exercising damage control skills. Computer based technologies that utilize the advantages of interactive courseware (ICW) present training opportunities that challenge the traditional methods of shipboard training. The Integrated Damage Control Training Technology (IDCTT) is an application of ICW that allows shipboard repair teams to exercise their damage control skills continuously. The trainer was installed onboard USS Harpers Ferry (LSD-49) and evaluated as a stand alone training device through administration of opinion surveys and comparison to various aspects of full scale drills with a standardized performance evaluation system. The shipboard IDCTT was found to be an effective shipboard training device that saves time. Additionally, it has significant cross training and team building qualities that can be integrated into an existing damage control training program.

CVX Damage Control Information Technology Evolutionary Model

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A296263. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Tightening of the U.S. defense budget has been closing in around the twelve aircraft carrier navy throughout the 1990's. In spite of this budget decline, the quantity and quality of our most expensive weapons, the aircraft carriers, have remained stable over the same period. These six thousand man ships, however, could soon become unwanted remains of the days of a 600-ship navy when recruiting was easier and manpower was less expensive. Damage control operations aboard the carrier require the greatest quantity of manpower of any single operational requirement. The next generation of carriers promises to be just as large and more diverse in mission than the current design. Without an infusion of sound technological advancements, the quantity of manpower required to protect these new carriers threatens to reduce the twelve-carrier navy to a more affordable number. The goal of this thesis is to establish a "technology roadmap" by which CVX can avoid where possible and negotiate where necessary, the changes in state of the art damage control technology. A deliberate and technologically sound process for improving the damage control capabilities aboard future and existing aircraft carriers is possible. A strong investment in information technology planning will play a major part in optimizing capabilities and manpower requirements of CVX. The reward will be improved robustness, efficiency and quality of life, keeping the next generation of aircraft carriers a truly labeled "high value unit".

Damage Control and Log Taking Java Applications for Shipboard Wireless LANs

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A039373. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Damage control communications and watchstander log taking practices need to be improved for onboard submarines and ships. Currently, damage control rely on a slow, error prone process involving sound powered telephone talkers and grease pencil annotated white board. Also log taking practice suffers from similar problems. Logs are taken on paper forms, corrected daily, and filed in cabinets. Wireless network and mobile computing devices can be a solution to improve the efficiency of these practices along with some others. In this thesis, a distributed Java prototype software is developed to utilize the benefit of an onboard Intranet utilizing wireless LANs and pen based handheld computers. For both practice areas, data could be entered into a handheld computer and then wirelessly transmitted to a database server. Those data can be used by powerful main platforms and different supervisors can reach it any time in parallel. An applet and a servlet program modules are created to provide small, user friendly, platform independent electronic forms. Since handheld computers have some limitations like screen dimensions, computing power, and Java Virtual Machine, features of these software approaches are tested on a few different handheld computers to find the best software approach and computer product.

An Intelligent Agent Simulations of Shipboard Damage Control

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A522083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A fire on board a ship presents special challenges. It requires not only special anti-fire devices but well-trained teams of firefighters. Since crews rotate periodically, there is a need for ongoing personnel training and not all crew members have the same amount of training. A significant problem is how to assess the effectiveness of a team of firefighters with different skills in a real situation. A team should work together efficiently and follow standard procedures correctly if it is to successfully extinguish the fire within a reasonable period of time and with minimum damage. The question is: What skills are of most importance to a successful team of firefighters? It is difficult to carry out physical experiments without risking human lives and material losses. This thesis uses a reactive agent-based simulation to study the possible importance of different firefighting skills and anti-fire devices to the prosecution of fire on board a ship.

It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A152083. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The United States Army 75th Ranger Regiment conducts combat parachute operations as part of United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). The Rangers are the largest deployable asset of USSOCOM, and are required to plan and execute large-scale parachute assaults into hostile theaters with little or no notice. Generally fighting numerically superior enemy, far from the support of the conventional Army, Rangers must arrive capable of self-sustaining combat operations in any operational environment. This thesis provides Ranger air load planners a tool to rapidly plan feasible mission equipment loads. The Ranger Air Load Planner (RAP) is simple to learn and operate, provides load plans selected from, pre-approved, United States Air Force load templates, and supports dynamic decision support with rapid solution response. An optimization model is used in the thesis to objectively assess the quality of RAP load plans. RAP is a working product that can be adapted for use in air load mission planning by all units under USSOCOM.

And what's more important--It really happened, it's verifiable, and it was COMMON KNOWLEGE to Colonists during the Revolutionary War era. This is one of the reasons so many people had such trust in George Washington during the Revolutionary War and afterwards. They knew that he was protected by God.
This booklet gives the account of the battle in which General George Braddock is ambushed during the French and Indian War. General Braddock is killed and all of the mounted officers are killed or wounded except ONE (George Washington). Washington escapes unhurt, without a scratch, though several horses are shot out from underneath him during the 3-hour (I think) battle, and his coat is riddled with bullet holes.
