Secret circle the initiation.......2007-05-07
I bought this book in a second hand book it is a briellient story and enjoyed reading it very much.
I adore these books.......2006-07-01
I first read these in high school and now atleast every 2 or 3 years I read them again. This time around (I'm 27 now) when I had the urge to read them I couldn't find them. I really wish they would make them into a movie trilogy! It's just a great read if you love nature and magic and remember being 16 and in highschool. I hope I read this until I am an old grandma and can get lost in time and pretend I am cassie!
A wonderful young adult book.......2006-04-11
I love this trilogy. I've loved it since I was about ten, and I still love it. It has pride of place on my bookshelf, and every now and again, I go back and re-read it.
In this first book, Cassie Blake, a highschool junior, finds herself suddenly uprooted when her mother moves them back to the tiny Massachusetts town of New Salem. They move in with her grandmother, and before long, a girl at Cassie's school has been murdered and Cassie has taken her place in the mysterious 'Club', a group of teenage witches who can trace their lineage all the way back to the days of the Salem witchcraft trials. Add to that is the menacing and beautiful Faye, Cassie's growing attraction to her best friend's boyfriend, and the search for the coven's lost Master Tools, and you have yourself a gripping and fast-paced start to a thrilling young adult trilogy.
That's not to say that the story doesn't have its problems, one of which is the somewhat underdeveloped secondary characters. Even this is excusable, however, given that there are eleven of them in the coven itself, not to mention various relations and townspeople. If nothing else, most of the coven members are clearly defined and given at least a few pages of close attention, such as the bike ride with Deborah in the second novel. Overall, a very satisfactory read, and well worth buying.
I loved these books.......2006-02-14
When I was about 13 or 14 I read and re-read these book over and over again. I even recorded them on tape so that I could listen to it while I was out and about.
I loved this trilogy.
Everyone can relate to Cassie in feeling different in a group and in this day and age magic is really popular, so this trilogy is the best for those that are coming of age in this time period when we are obsessed with darkness and magic, etc.
I plan on buying a new set because I wore my old set (given that was 13 years ago) out.
Love It!.......2005-07-12
I first read this book when I was 12. For some reason I was not able to get ahold of the next two books in the series. Well, the ending left me so curious to know what happened that I felt compelled (at the age of 24) to track down the next two books in the series to find out what happened. I have to say that I enjoyed reading it the second time as much as I enjoyed the first. The characters are all well formed and interesting. These books are an excellent synthesis of religious accuracy and compelling imagination.

A lovely gathering of lyrical, lively writings.......2005-06-04
Stores from Irish peoples and expats alike are gathered into Michael Quinlin's Classic Irish Stories: Timeless Tales From Ireland And Other Green Shores, bringing the Irish experience and culture under one cover. Here are works from Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, William Thackeray and more, both contemporary and traditional writers providing a range of literary gems celebrating the 'old country'. A lovely gathering of lyrical, lively writings.
Book Description
In the 1930s, as waves of war and persecution were crashing over Europe, two young Jewish women began separate journeys of survival. One, a Polish-born woman from Bialystok, where virtually the entire Jewish community would soon be sent to the ghetto and from there to Hitler’s concentration camps, was determined not only to live but to live with pride and defiance. The other, a Russian-born intellectual and introvert, would eventually become a high-level censor under Stalin’s regime. At war’s end, both women found themselves in Moscow, where informers lurked on every corner and anti-Semitism reigned. It was there that Ester and Ruzya would first cross paths, there that they became the closest of friends and learned to trust each other with their lives.
In this deeply moving family memoir, journalist Masha Gessen tells the story of her two beloved grandmothers: Ester, the quicksilver rebel who continually battled the forces of tyranny; Ruzya, a single mother who joined the Communist Party under duress and made the compromises the regime exacted of all its citizens. Both lost their first loves in the war. Both suffered unhappy unions. Both were gifted linguists who made their living as translators. And both had children—Ester a boy, and Ruzya a girl—who would grow up, fall in love, and have two children of their own: Masha and her younger brother.
With grace, candor, and meticulous research, Gessen peels back the layers of secrecy surrounding her grandmothers’ lives. As she follows them through this remarkable period in history—from the Stalin purges to the Holocaust, from the rise of Zionism to the fall of communism—she describes how each of her grandmothers, and before them her great-grandfather, tried to navigate a dangerous line between conscience and compromise.
Ester and Ruzya is a spellbinding work of storytelling, filled with political intrigue and passionate emotion, acts of courage and acts of betrayal. At once an intimate family chronicle and a fascinating historical tale, it interweaves the stories of two women with a brilliant vision of Russian history. The result is a memoir that reads like a novel—and an extraordinary testament to the bonds of family and the power of hope, love, and endurance.
From the Hardcover edition.
Customer Reviews:
stirring narrative of two courageous and resourceful women.......2006-04-23
This is a great story of how two women survive the unimaginable horrors of WWII. Both are Jews. Ester is from Bialystok, in Poland, a city which would be turned into a ghetto, and whose Jewish residents were rounded up and deported by the Nazis. Ruzya is Russian, and she endures the terror of Stalin's regime, where she is regarded with suspicion. Both women are separated from their parents, sibilings, and husbands at one point or another, and end up meeting in Moscow at the war's end. Masha Gessen weaves both of their stories into a single stirring memoir. It is not free of bias, these are Gessen's grandmothers, and she obviously views them in certain ways, but she is an exceptional storyteller, and takes what they have told her, and merges it with her own research. It is certainly not the only memoir about WWII, but it does offer some fresh insight, particularly in the way it describes the Soviet Union during the war, with vivid imagery that conveys a stunning sense of panic and confusion, words that aptly describe the Soviet reaction to the German invasion. It also conveys pain, loss, and desperation. Overall, a good, easily readable text recommended for any student of history.
Highly recommended.......2005-09-10
A friend lent me her copy of Ester and Ruzya and I liked it so much I bought copies for family members. This book is informative, well written, and deeply honest. Many of us have some knowledge about the Holocaust and what happened to European Jews, but this narrative about the author's family in Russia during WWII and after gives the reader insight about a different Jewish experience. I recommend it highly.
Wow (with a few caveats, of course).......2005-04-29
It's been said of this memoir/biography that it reads like a novel, but of course that's not quite true. Even the most abundantly lively literary creations are still creations, whereas the heroines of the title here are undeniably real. It's a tribute to their personalities, and to Gessen's skill, that they seem so from the first page.
The story--basically that of the twentieth century itself--is of such unimaginably wide scope that Gessen's tight focus on her family makes perfect sense, and she doesn't need to indulge in literary pyrotechnics or crazy stories to justify it. But when picking the perfect one-paragraph vignette, and particularly in the extended section in which she describes the death of her great-grandfather at the hands of the Nazis--told as three completely different tales, based on the multiple reconstructions she was able to piece togeher from survivors' stories--the craft and creativity that went into shaping this becomes apparent.
It's fascinating from beginning to end, marred only by an oocasional brusqueness, as if the hand that elides so much to keep the focus along has become impatient. These moments are often followed by a few paragraphs of florid embellishment, as if to overcompensate. But Gessen need make no apologies: this is compelling reading, and an important resource for understanding the human reality of history.

Book Description
The author, a soldier with Britain's 9th Battalion Royal Tank Regiment at the Battle of Normandy, examines the fiasco behind wartime British tank design. He charges members of the wartime government with thousands of deaths caused by their incompetence, indecision, and ignorance.
Customer Reviews:
Good information in a confusingly edited book.......2000-07-20
This book explores a little researched area of the Second World War: armored fighting vehicle design. The thesis in and of itself is nothing new to students of the conflict: namely that British tanks were inferior to their German opponents in armor (Quality and thickness), firepower (main tank weapon, and fire control) and reliability. What is new is the perspective from a crewman and his contemporaries. The narrative is a sad story of official indifference and political infighting that cost unnecessary lives during the fighting in the ETO. Unfortunately, these insights are somewhat clouded by a confusing and contradictory work. For example, the 75mm medium-velocity gun on the Sherman series is rightly derided for its lack of penetrating power; however, later it is lauded for its overall usefulness (due to the effective HE round it fired) without reservations. The reader is left to wonder, "did crews think the weapon was effective or didn't they"? The text is unclear on this point and often repeats its assertions although they are reworded. This doesn't normally bother me in larger books, but in a work of only 200+ pages it shows some inattentive editing. The author's opinions of the British leadership in the armored branch at this time, that very few understood armored warfare, are impassioned and validated by other research and make interesting reading. If you are a serious student of WW2 armored warfare you will find some value here. A general interest reader may wish to wait for another edition.

This book was a product of RAND's pioneering work in computing, as well a testament to the patience and persistence of researchers in the early days of RAND.
Customer Reviews:
Another book from the pro-Arabic numeral crowd.......2007-09-27
There are 10 kinds of people in this world: Those who understand binary digits and those who don't. The author of this book clearly falls into the latter category.
I will give the author some credit though, for capturing the 'riverrun', Joycean stream-of-conciousness in a new form. As other reviewers have commented, once you finish the book you want to start again at the beginning.
I found a typo.......2007-09-15
To whom do I write to report typographical errors? I noticed that the first "7" on the third line page 48 should be a "3". The "7" that's printed there now isn't random. Other than that, this is really an excellent book.
Key to enjoying this particular tome.......2007-09-15
Step 1: eat some mushrooms (or peyote or LSD)
Step 2: have a light snack and something to drink (maybe some orange juice)
Step 3: prepare to enjoy the most magical story you will ever see/read
Dumbest Book I ever Read!.......2007-09-13
The plot stinks. It is totally unbeleivable. And where are the illustrations? There's no sex, no graphic violence, and bad grammar throughout.
I liked the book jacket however.
I just can't reccomend it.
The Most Important Book You'll Ever Buy.......2007-09-13
Just in case you're trapped in an underground hatch and need to type a million random digits into a computer every 108 minutes. You really need this book for emergency situations like that. Don't thank me, just buy it... now.

The Definitive Textbook for the Clean Air Act.......2000-04-25
In my environmental studies, I never found a textbook as informative or specific on the Clean Air Act as Blue Skies Green Politics. Detailed information on environmental challenges in policymaking, the problem with air pollution and updates on how the Act has been amended since 1970 provided much needed data for both exams and research papers. I strongly recommend this to both individuals who are studying environmental policy and science and environmental professionals.
