THE LAST INSTALLMENT, SAD, BUT IT IS SOOOOOO CUTE, LIKE THE BEST!!.......2007-05-22
FANG AND EMILY, ON A CRUISE, IN ALASKA?? WITH SOME ELDERLY PEOPLE?? UH OH... LOL, I SERIOUSLY LAUGHED OUT LOUD. EMILY IS HILARIOUS WITH THE OLD FOLKS!!!!!!
ahhh, amazing........2006-05-17
I don't know why some people have said this book isn't as good as the others in this series, 'cause if anything, it's one of the best, besides The Year My Life Went Down The Loo.
I just finished this book last night...it was soooo hard to put down. Emily is as hilarious as ever, yet toward the middle/end of the book, we start to see a different side of her as we hear of her homesickness from England and what her and her father do to commemorate the trip. Behind her crazy antics, we can see a true person, especially when she's with her sweet, adorable boyfriend Fang or during that aforementioned moment with her father. (or Brother, as he is called in the book =) ) Plus, her fun with Dru's wedding banter and her e-mails to Holly, Devon, and her father at random times just really make you laugh.
It's just an amazing series, considering how Maxwell can turn an immature-at-first-glance teenager named Emily into a layered character, even through all her antics and really freakin' hilarious scenarios. It's something you can read and just laugh/crack up, but also have moments of "awww" and "oh man! =O"
If you really want something to read on the beach or just anywhere where you can relax and have a good time, this is the book for you. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. =)
Eh...could have been better........2005-11-28
I loved all the previous books in the Emily series! I like this book too; however, it was a little slow and didn't have much of a plot. The cover and the title didn't have anything to do with the book. Still an alright read for die hard Emily fans!
Another Winner.......2005-07-24
Another winner from Katie Maxwell. Entertaining romp about Emily and Fangs adventures.
Hilarious fun.......2005-07-20
Emily Williamson is back again in the latest installment of her series.
This time, she gets ready for graduation, endures her best friend Dru's constant wedding talk, is devastated when her boyfriend Fang gets mono, and goes on a cruise to Alaska with Fang.
Emily does not disappoint with her charming way of talking, all of her cute net lingo in her emails, and, of course, her idiotic but hilarious blunders.
This book was a bit slow in the love department, considering the fact that Fang has mono and as a result Emily can't kiss him. But that's alright - Fang's sweetness and his obvious care and concern for Emily compensates.
I hope Ms. Maxwell will continue the Emily series. They're great books if you're looking for something light and quick, and they never fail to make you smile or laugh at Emily's antics. I can't wait to read the next one; hopefully Fang will have recovered from his mono, and I also want to read about Emily's experiences at college!
A great chick book written in emails, Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Hotties is another installment of the Emily Williamson series that should not be missed.
Recommended.

Book Description
Is Australia a remote chunk of the northern, western world or a part of Asia? Is it a new version of the USA with European manners ("the new California"), or a second-hand version of Europe with American ones? How does it accommodate the fate of its original human inhabitants, or propose a decent future for them? Why is its head of state still the British queen? In Australia, two universal, modern problems are vividly posed. Who are we? What shall we become?
Customer Reviews:
What Ever Happened to Crocodile Dundee?.......2000-08-12
There are two Australias: there's the sanitized Australia of myth encompassing Crocodile Dundee, koalas and kangaroos, Nicholas Roeg's WALKABOUT, Peter Weir's early films, and Bruce Chatwin's THE SONGLINES. Then there's the gritty, no-hope, hardscrabble world of the stories in this GRANTA anthology.
Good writing is alive and well Down Under. Some of the pieces were haunting, especially Ben Rice's "Pobby and Dingan," about a child's invisible friends who take on a whole new reality; Paul Toohey's "The Road to Ginger Riley," about the last days of a drunken journalist who wants to "find" Australia before he dies; and Thomas Keneally's "My Father's Australia," about life in a small town before World War I.
The Aborigines are a ghostly presence in this anthology, except for Robyn Davidson's eerie "Marrying Eddie" and Polly Borland's haunting photos and interviews of Aborigine men and women spiralling down into oblivion. There's no COOPER'S CREEK heroism here: You have to find your own way, Mate!
However dark the vision of most of these selections, this volume is a worthy addition to GRANTA's growing library of stories and essays. When you pack your bags to go on vacation, you could do worse than take ANY volume of GRANTA with you. Each one is a window into a different world -- maybe not a pleasant one, but always a fascinating one.

Blending personal drama with literary reflection, reportage, and medical history, Dorothy Wall illuminates the conflicts and controversies surrounding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and graphically depicts the way a virus resculpts a life.

ENLIGHTENING.......2007-08-10
I have suffered from CFS since the late 70's although I was able to "push" through the majority of those years. I am now back in an accute phase and found Dorothy Wall's book fascinating , beautifully written and helpful. It helped make my illness real for me since I have never "looked" ill and have learned to doubt that what I have is real. I found it a story of the truth, which was most refreshing and inspiring.
Experience plus information.......2007-06-27
I found this to be an excellent book on CFIDS. I too suffer from it and feel sometimes I am the only one in my corner of the world that has it. It is helpful to read about someone else who has the same symptoms so I realize I am not " losing it" and it is real. The author also provides comphrensive data relating to medical, historical, and social aspects of this troubling illness. I would highly suggest this to people who have CFIDS and those who want to learn more about it. It is a a very readable book that is packed with information and is not boring or dry.
An excellent description.......2007-05-18
I was diagnosed with post-viral CFS in 1988. This book is an excellent description of living with CFS except for one thing: 3/4 of marriages affected by chronic illness break up, which means that most of us don't have the live-in support system she had.
Some disbelieving doctors like to attribute CFS to "secondary gain" or enablers who allow the patient to "enjoy the sick role". Unfortunately, for many CFS patients, there's no enabler and the only thing you gain is the stress of trying to make ends meet with no income.
Wall tells of having someone run her bath, gently wash her, dress her, and help her back to bed. That's a luxury most of us don't enjoy. If I'm not well enough to cook, I don't get dinner; if I cannot safely get in and out of the tub by myself, I don't bathe (on a cold winter day when I needed a bath to warm up, I got stuck in the tub for over an hour because I lacked the strength to boost myself up and out, and there was no one to call for help).
Wall's live-in support structure allowed her to do what those of us who live alone can't: use all her energy to write a book to explain to the rest of the world what it's like to be trapped in a body and brain that don't function.
I recommend this not only to patients, but to their friends and family as one of the best patient-written books I've read.
Read this! This is what it's like.......2007-04-13
If I could write a book about CFIDS/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, this is the book I would want to have written. It captures the feeling of what it's like to live with CFIDS/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome better than any book I've read (and I've read a lot of books about CFIDS). The author, Dorothy Wall, manages to move seamlessly between the personal and the larger political and medical issues of this debilitating chronic illness.
Wall grapples with many of the questions and issues I've thought about or have been forced to deal with, and which I'm sure many people with CFIDS will relate to. The role reversal of being better informed about CFIDS than the doctors you consult. The effect on your identity when your professional life is interrupted. Dealing with the expectations and advise of well-meaning friends and family. The way CFIDS forces you to reexamine the ethic of pushing yourself to exceed your boundaries and limitations. The desire to "pass" as a healthy person, if only briefly. The difference between accepting the realities of CFIDS and capitulating to them. The strain it puts on your closest relationships with spouse and family members when they are forced to become caregivers. The unexpected small joys and benefits that a constricted, slowed-down life can bring, like an appreciation of the beauty of a flower unfolding. The questions about what CFIDS and related illnesses may portend for our society.
Dorothy Wall's background as an editor and writer show through, in the way the writing is at once spare and lyrical. She can be poetic without being flowery. The simplicity of the writing allowed her meaning to penetrate my CFIDS brain fog, so that I didn't have to read the book in five minute increments.
Let me mention what this book ISN'T. It isn't a how-to guide for living with chronic fatigue syndrome, or a textbook for "CFS 101." It doesn't include a laundry list of symptoms, suggestions for treatment, or a list of theories about the cause. In many ways, it contains more questions than answers. It does give a general overview and background, and the afterward by Dr. Nancy Klimas is a good summary of the biology of CFIDS and an overview of current research.
This is a book that I want to press into the hands of family and friends, and say "Read this! This is what it's like." I would urge anyone who either has this disease or knows someone who has it, to read this book. I'm seriously thinking about buying a second copy to give to my doctor.
Becoming Visible.......2006-10-15
I have read many books on CFS but none has moved me more deeply in more different ways than this book has. One of the above reviewers was correct; this book is a classic, probably the first literary classic of CFS. Ms Walls, a professional writer, brings all her skills to bear in describing in poignant terms the losses, frustrations and triumphs she has encountered in her several decade long experience with this disease. There is something here for everyone; besides her story the author focuses chapters on the disease's history, it's name, the ongoing research, what it tells us about the pitfalls of modern medicine and more. What I enjoyed most about this book was her fine tuned sensibility and her poetic grasp of language. She proved to be an excellant guide through the issues that the CFS patient faces in our world today. We are lucky to have this book.

Book Description
On 19 August 1942 a mainly Canadian force left England in an attempt to seize the German-occupied French port of Dieppe, on a mission that has been described as the largest raid in history. The result was a complete disaster. That some 4,000 Canadian soliders and marines should wait over 2 1/2 years for combat and then be killed, maimed, or captured in a single morning is one of the great tragedies of the Second World War, and represents for Canadians a problem of acceptance. Many books, and accounts by participants, have failed to explain certain mysteries, such as: "Why was it executed when it was known to court failure?" and, "Who was responsible?" Brian Villa has devoted nearly eight years to examining documents in search of answers to these and other questions about a major event of the war that has been subjected to much obfuscation. The result is a book that unravels all the complexities that led to it, having the British Chiefs of Staff, and especially the vagaries of Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was ultimately responsible as Chief of Combined Operations. As the first thorough examination of the disaster--one that will fascinate the general reader for its detective-like treatment of facts and evidence leading to clarification--this book is a primary contribution to the literature of the Second World War. Students of political science will value an Appendix that examines the evidence in an attempt to answer the question: Why do governments do what they know they should not do? Combined Operations.
Customer Reviews:
Chilling.......2004-07-31
An excellent book with a chilling additional chapter in the updated edition.
Very scholarly work, examines in detail the supposition that Mountbatten launched the Dieppe Raid without permission or authorization. The claim is supported by evidence, though it may take several readings to fully grasp the intricacies of the argument being presented.
Focusses entirely on politics and thus will not satisfy those looking for the military details of this action, nor the planning issues. A well focussed, well written, and - if one reads the final chapter added to the first edition - chilling story of how this disastrous raid came into being and who may have been finally responsible.
An incisive study of Governments at war.......1997-11-07
I was prepared not to like this book. I say this at the beginning to give the reader of this review warning: I'm a convert, somewhat, to the author's point of view.
The Dieppe Raid is one of the puzzles of WW2. Why the British persisted in launching it when it had already been cancelled once, and was obviously a precarious proposition at best, has never been satisfactorily explained. My worry was that Villa, being a Canadian, would take an explicitly anti-British point of view, with which I would take issue. He doesn't.
Instead, the book focuses on the decision-making process, and the way governments launch operations in wartime. This part of the book is fascinating, and enlightening. His premise (that Mountbatten launched the raid himself, as Combined Operations head, without the required approval of the Chiefs of Staff) is a bit of a stretch, but by the end of the book, I was willing to say I needed to see an alternative explanation before I believed otherwise.
The book's style is rather formal, and there's little attempt at humor or levity, but the writing is clear and incisive. The author has obviously done his homework. There are separate chapters on the navy and RAF, both of which display knowledge of the overall context of the period of the war in which Dieppe took place, and the circumstances under which the decision was made. All of this strongly adds to the book itself, and the author's thesis. All in all a very good book.
Book Description
In this incisive work, Sara Diamond expands our understanding of the Christian Right beyond what is commonly known about its electoral clout, shedding light on the rarely seen boundaries and intersections where politics and culture converge. The book examines the web of grassroots cultural institutions, including publishing houses, law firms, broadcast stations, and church-centered community programs, that have helped conservative evangelical groups maintain their influence for over two decades. Highlighting the movement's complex alliance with the Republican Party, Diamond provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at the formation, organizing strategies, and heated internal debates of such powerful national organizations as Focus on the Family and the Christian Coalition. She offers a richly textured analysis of how the rubric of "family values" has been used to infuse evangelical beliefs into local and national discussions around such disparate issues as childrearing, gay rights, abortion, public education, and funding for the arts.
Customer Reviews:
Very valuable source of insight and information.......2005-12-02
I'm not sure whether the other reviewers have actually read the book or are simply engaging in political arguments. Like the blurb says, she allows the Christian Right to speak for itself (and to call her 'uninformed' is just ignorant - she has a massive array of sources and factual information). Enjoy.
The Christian Right is alive and clutching our throats!.......2003-03-30
This book does a good job of exposing one of the most insidious power grabs in history! Fundamentalists of any religion are pretty darn scary because they are so sure they are right. For example, I once talked to a woman who was distributing anti-abortion literature. I pointed out that Ronald Reagan's cuts to social service programs caused the US to go from the fourth highest infant mortality in the FIRST world to the highest in just 4 years and that this killed more babies than abortions. The woman looked upset and said, I don't know, I voted for him because my pastor told me to. The "Christian" right has tried to pass "pro-family" referenda in Colorado that would have prevented the state from interfering when a father sexually abused his children. I grew up in a southern Baptist church in a very small town. I got tired of being told I should obey the men and that men were smarter than women. By the way, the governer of one state is a leading Southern Baptist. His son and another Boy Scout, tortured a dog to death a few years ago. These boy scouts were never prosecuted. At the local evangelical church, cards are passed out telling people how to vote! Federal family planning funds are being given to "faith-based" groups who preach abstinence. The head of the US Baptist church this last fall said that the US should attack Iraq. IF that's not wielding right-wing power, I don't know what is. The wife of the head of the Southern Baptist convention said that she always defers to her husband if they cannot agree on an issue--then she goes out and buys a new hat! I got all of this out of the mainstream, not the liberal press. Remember, Hitler was a Christian. His first successful campaign slogan was "Kinder, Kirchen, Kuchen." In the early 1920's, he began his rise to power being against women's rights--women should only care for children (Kinder) and stay in the church (Kirchen) and kitchen (Kuchen). The main reason fundamentalists in this country complain that they have no power is that they, so far, can't have everything their own way. They have no idea about give and take and the possibility that they might be wrong. They want to punish evil--but we are all evil and good. I read the New Testament a lot, it sustains me in this world of violent religious people. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone." "As ye have done to the least of my brethren, so have ye done to me." I have had fundamentalist neighbors tell me that it is all right to destroy the environment because God put all this here for humans to use. I can't imagine what we are going to say to God when we stand before him and explain why we destroyed so many parts of his beautiful creation.
There is no "Christian Right".......2001-12-22
The Christian Right is an enduring myth that has haunted left-wing academics ever since the election of Ronald Reagan. In the view of many liberals, a Protestant Taliban has emerged in the nation's heartland, with the goal of taking over the United States and wiping out all the "progress" society has made since the 1920s. Mainstream religious organizations - such as the Baptist Church, the world's largest non-catholic Christian communion - are really only fronts for this insidious, anti-modern movement. For reasons that are never explained, Roman Catholics, Muslims, and others whose social beliefs are far more conservative and politically-inclined than evangelical Protestants are never similarly excoriated or held as objects of terror by the liberal elite. This lapse is especially striking when one considers that Islam exists with the express purpose of becoming one with the State, and that Catholic social thought (which is the guiding ideology of JP2) is based on the idea of one national church, and that Catholic bishops routinely tell the laity how to vote not just on a few issues, but on virtually every issue facing voters. For some vague reason, it is Evangelicals - people like Baptists, who oppose state-established religion and government compulsion in spiritual affairs - who are the subversives we must fear and restrain.
While a number of religious personalities (Tim LaHaye, James Dobson, Jerry Falwell, etc.) have espoused views that congeal with the agenda of the Republican Party, none of these individuals have ever "crossed the line" into subversive or illegal activity. They have simply expressed their views; until the First Amendment is withdrawn, they have every right to do so.
The few genuine "Christian Right" movements - Christian Reconstructionism, for example - are smaller and less influential than PETA, let alone established, effective public policy groups like the Cato Institute or NOW.
Why do people like Sara Diamond insist on portraying Evangelical Christians are demons? The truth is Evangelicals are fairly moderate compared to other religions - they permit divorce; they permit non-reproductive sex within marriage; many of them embrace the ordination of women in the church and complete equality of women in the social sphere. Their churches are generally democratic, with all members having an equal say in the spiritual and economic administration of the church. They believe in purely voluntary religion - no forced conversions or forced retention of members.
America, you have nothing to fear from Baptists or Pentecostals. You have more to fear from misguided, misinformed people like Sara Diamond, who'll set you against your neighbor and close down the possibility of real dialogue about the issues facing our society.
