5 out of 5 stars Corals of Australia and the Indo-Pacific - 2nd Revised Edition.......2007-05-16

The first reference of its kind, this book represents good biology, well-founded systematics, accessible biogeography. geologial history of corals that can be traced back over five hundred million years, and one of the finest collections of pictures of corals to be foun anywhere. Hailed as the single most important reference on reef corals, Corals of Australia and the Indo-Pacific is useful in describing corals in all areas of Oceania and Southeast Asia.

This title received the Australian National Awards Whitley Medal for Best Natural History book in 1988.

About the Author: J.E.N. Veron is one of the most imaginative and productive of contempory coral reef biologists and has been working with corals for more than twenty-five years. He first became interested in coral taxonomy after taking up SCUBA diving as a hobby while teaching general zoology and genetics at the University of North Queensland

4 out of 5 stars Great book, don't expect any captive system info.......2000-08-22

This is a tremendous book that will certainly dominate my coffee table for years to come. It might be useful when referring to various species (e.g. when buying mail-order) but it does not contain any aquarium care information- a task that is best left in another volume. If you are interested in the subject, however, I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars the best reference ever!.......2000-04-01

This is the greatest coral book ever written! It is a masterpiece and includes some of the best underwater coral photography ever published. It is mostly a pretty version of Dr. Veron's 5 vol scientific journals, and is a little hard to see it's true use in the reef keeping hobby, because it talks about corals strictly out on the wild reef, but if you take the requirements of the animal in the wild and apply it to your home aquarium you can not fail. This book is also the best for identifing all of those mystery stony corals you have in your tank. There is not one stony coral on the reef that this book does not discuss. If you have stony corals or plan to have them in the future then this book is a must have on your list. The price tag is a little high I know, but worth every cent. The great pictures alone make it a great coffee table book and worth the price right there,if you love corals don't pass this book up!

5 out of 5 stars The greatest SPS coral reference at hand.......1999-10-29

Corals of Australia and the Indo-Pacific is by far the best reference for coral reference on the market today. This book is for the serious Reef Aquarium Hobbiest or Marine Biologist. While this book does not give reference to aquarium conditions, it does provide the reader with a comprehensive review of the major SPS corals not given in any other puiblication that I have found. If you are are an SPS reef aquarium hobbiest. You need this book

Corals of Australia and Indo-Pacific is the ultimate resource for stony (SPS) Corals I have found to date. I am a reef aquarium hobbiest and I use Verons book almost exclusively to identify species of aquarium coral. The book is also extremely helpful in requard to the taxonomy of the SPS.

I got this book because I need it for a class, but I actually started reading it before the class started. It's a great book to give you the basic info about a lot of popular and historic places in Boston. Each site has about 4 pages of info, including websites, phone numbers, and other tourist info. I wish I had known about this before my senior year of college in Boston.

      A Great Big Monster

When Measle Stubbs broke free from Basil Tramplebone's evil spell, he was ready to live happily ever after. But he wasn't expecting the Dragodon.

Now, faced with his most terrifying opponent yet and stranded in a sinister amusement park, this little ex-orphan must gear up for another heroic battle.

Colossal adventures continue in this second book about one of the most likeable and intrepid heroes ever!

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Imaginative, but Somewhat Scary and Violent .......2006-09-07

Reunited with his birth parents after years spent under the roof of notorious Basil Tramplebone, Measle is happy as can be. His parents are fond of fun, magic, and birthday-Christmas (a.k.a. "birthmas") parties. Everything is great--until something sets its sights on the family.

Sam Stubbs, Measle's father, is a Wizard, and his mom, Lee, provides Sam with never-ending mana (energy) for his magic. It's Lee's mana reserves that have attracted the Dragodon's attention. Using evil Wrathmonks to capture Lee and incapacitate Sam, the Dragodon sets a sinister plan into motion, and it's up to Measle to stop him.

In this dark fantasy for children, Ian Ogilvy brings back his spunky hero to fight the forces of nastiness. While this tale is imaginative, younger and more sensitive children would be better steered toward another title, such as the "Anybodies" series by N.E. Bode (same publisher). There are numerous references to violence and death, and there is an extended scene where Measle and Tinker (his dog) are hunted by animated toys with needles for teeth.

For children capable of handling such material without having nightmares, this is a decent read. This is even a good pick for kids who seek out scary stories. The writing itself is easy for intermediate readers, and the plot holds up for the most part. As always, it is the parents' responsibility to keep on eye on what their children are reading, and if the scary/violence is ok, there's not much to worry about in this book.

This is a great little known series about a young boy that fights insane wizards. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat. The first book in the series took place in a train set. This one puts a kid's imagination and dreams to work as the protagonist of the story battles the evil wrathmonks throughout an amusement part.

4 out of 5 stars Fun read aloud book.......2006-02-17

I read this to my children, 9 and 7 years old. They both enjoyed the story and it moved quickly enough to keep both of thier attentions. It was funny in parts and had enough suspense to entertain them. My youngest son would recite to his Dad what we had read the evening before. It had a few scary elements (the needle teeth on stuffed animals) but it was not so much that I would balk at recommending it to read with your children. Over all it was a fun book.

4 out of 5 stars An Awesome Book.......2005-06-08

Measle and the Dragodon is an amazing book. This is a sequel to the first genius book 'Measle and the Wrathmonk'.

Ian Ogilvy has written about Measle, a 10-year-old boy who has just re-united with his parents 2 weeks before and is still recovering from his memories of the evil wrathmonk Basil Tramplebone.

Measle's parents, Sam and Lee are wrathmonk hunters. Sam (Measle's father) is minor wizard who is bright and willing for anything. Lee, a little more cautious, is a rare sort of person. She's a mana well. That means she has a never-ending supply of mana (which is what a wizard needs to have to cast a spell) that can be given to another person by them being married. By touching each other's hand, Sam and Lee can create the most wondrous spells.

It all starts at a grocery store in the parking lot when Sam and Lee were loading groceries into their trunk. Measle was coming with more groceries to catch up to them.

All of the sudden a band of evil wrathmonks (who were friends of Basil) came and snatched Lee to capture her and leave Sam with a mild case of amnesia.

Lee has been taken to an abandoned amusement park, closed for the winter. Measle's job is to find and rescue his mom and get revenge on who ever did this. He has to do this without being caught. All he has to help him is a dozen yellow jellybeans that will turn him and whatever he is touching invisible for 30 seconds, a trusty, scruffy little dog called Tinker, and a trumpet like instrument that imitates any voice he points it at. He has to hurry! His mother's life may be depending on it!

This book would be great for anyone who has a great love of mystical, adventure with a pinch of mystery. This is a suitable book for ages 10 and up.

      Ian, you've done well!!

A timely and authoritative review of the current state of selective detector technology

This book was written for professionals who need to keep abreast of the latest developments and emerging trends in selective detectors and their applications. It comprises contributions from many of the leading innovators and pioneers in the field, including James Lovelock, inventor of the electron capture detector, whose own contribution is certain to be a rich source of ideas and inspiration for all who read it. Offering a balanced presentation of theory and practice, Selective Detectors:

Future historians studying the late twentieth century will almost certainly come to view the advent of selective detectors as among the truly formative technological developments of the period. Anyone who doubts this thesis need only consider the impact of selective detection on environmental quality, the sciences, technology, medicine, business and industry, public policy, quality control, and many other fields. Yet, despite the obvious importance of selective detectors, there continues to be a scarcity of books dedicated to helping professionals keep abreast of the latest developments and emerging trends in this in fluential technology.

This timely and authoritative review of the current state of selective detector technology fills that gap. This book focuses on the newest selective detectors for chromatographic analysis. Conceived and shepherded into existence by a major figure in analytical chemistry and environmental analysis, it includes contributions from many of the leading innovators and pioneers in the field. Most prominent among these is Dr. James Lovelock, inventor of the electron capture detector, whose chapter on the history and development of selective detectors will be a rich source of ideas and inspiration for all who read it.

Offering a balanced presentation of theory and practice, Selective Detectors reviews the theory and underlying principles of selective detectors; discusses, in detail, their current capabilities and applications; explores the latest advances and emerging technologies; and arms readers with a wealth of practical "how-to" information on selecting, using, modifying, and building selective detectors for a wide range of applications.

Selective Detectors is an invaluable resource for analytical chemists and technicians working in a variety of disciplines, including environmental science, petrochemical industries, the food and beverage industries, biotechnology, medicine, and more.

The Appalachian Trail, at 2,150 miles, is the longest continuous recreational footpath in America. From a variety of sources, Emblidge culled random trail gems to create an Appalachian quilt of an anthology. Through the Green Mountains, the Adirondacks, and the Great Smokies, the trail links the ridges and valleys, as well as a diverse cross-section of American cultures. With practical trail details and an eclectic assembly of hiking wisdom, you can read it straight through, or a chapter at a time, as you plan your next hike. It's just a shame it's too heavy to pack along.

                                    Book Description

The longest continuously marked footpath in the world, the Appalachian Trail spans 2,140 miles across fourteen states--from Georgia to Maine--and travels through vastly different natural and social environments. Now, in a lively and eye-opening introduction to this national treasure, The Appalachian Trail Reader collects trail diaries, historical and personal essays, and poems that reflect the meaning of this great wilderness trail across both time and geography. Here are the works of both well-known writers and anonymous raconteurs, including Henry David Thoreau, James Dickey, Aldo Leopold, James MacGregor Burns, Richard Wilbur, and many others. The trail's founding fathers Benton MacKaye and Myron Avery speak here, too, about their visions and plans, while excerpts from Appalachian Trail hikers' journals, from the 1930s to the 1990s, provide a firsthand, intimate portrait of walking the trail. And throughout, scientists' close observation of the natural world mingle with poet's evocations of the sweetness or the rigors of the wilderness experience. A patchwork quilt of voices, both eloquent and raw, The Appalachian Trail Reader presents a rich introduction to the trail for those planning a walking trip, and a vivid scrapbook for those who have already hiked its mountains or valleys.

4 out of 5 stars Valuable trove of anecdotes and information .......2005-03-30

This reader is broken into two parts. The first part, which is shorter by far, contains a series of essays (including one by Thoreau), and lots of historical information which places the Appalachian Trail in its proper context of American history. The essays explore the trail from a variety of interesting perspectives.

The second part, which is most of the book, is made up of writings by people who have experienced some part of the trail. Old hikers, young hikers, disabled hikers and spiritually downcast hikers are all given a voice. These writings are arranged into sections according to which state they take place in.

In all, this is a valuable and interesting compilation about an amazing feature of the United States. I found that reading it from cover to cover got a little tedious at times; the stories all sort of blur together and most of the anecdotes are descriptive rather than plot-driven. However, reading a portion of the book here and there helps to keep the experience of the Appalachian trail alive in our minds.

If you're considering spending some time on the trail, I would recommend reading this and also "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson.

4 out of 5 stars A Taste of the Trail.......2001-06-20

This is the perfect book for those of us who have good intentions of someday making the 2000-mile trek from Georgia to Maine ... but will never really get around to it. Emblidge dovetails selections by well-known naturalists and writers with those of AT through- and dayhikers to create a unique collection of observations. Some, like Thoreau, found themselves in the neighborhood of the path before it was even created. You can follow the history of the trail, beginning with Benton MacKaye's first written public proposal in 1921. Then the pieces mark an imaginary trip north from Springer Mountain to Mount Katahdin. Simple maps and b&w photos are included. It's not Bill Bryson's _A Walk in the Woods_, but then, what is? This is still an easy summer read.
