Book Description
Victor Hugo's travel experiences of his journey along the whole length of the Rhine, with an account of its legends, antiquities, and important historical events..
Victor Hugo (1802-1885) was a novelist, poet, and dramatist, and the most important of French Romantic writers. In his preface to his historical play Cromwell (1827) Hugo wrote that romanticism is the liberalism of literature. Hugo developed his own version of the historical novel, combining concrete, historical details with vivid, melodramatic, even feverish imagination. Among his best-known works are The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Les Misérables.
Victor Hugo was one of the greatest personalities of French literature. Though not without the faults and eccentricities which frequently characterize great geniuses, he never entered any field of literature without excelling in it. The novel, the lyric, the drama, criticism, all fell from his facile pen without apparent effort.

not what it appears.......2000-06-02
I received this book as a gift two years ago and my first thought was "lectures and essays... how boring", but I ended up being swept off me feet by this book. It's beautifully written and contains such insight into the human, and female condition that I have bought copies of it for all of the people who are dearest to me. It's a book to refer back to throughout your life, and reread when you lose your way.

Book Description
Most Disney characters between 1930 and 1970 were animated by one of the Nine Old Men. Through the span of their careers, these nine highly skilled men, exhibited a loyalty to one another and their employer unparalled in most professions. This candid narrative of their lives and contributions will continue to be a significant, essential source for stury and inspiration.
Customer Reviews:
I want John Canemaker's privileges.......2003-05-01
Once again John Canemaker has made me envious of his access to such beautiful artwork. The behind-the-scene stories of the personalities who created the characters we grew up with is wonderful. A gorgeous book with illustrations that make it worth the money all by themselves.
Nine Lives.......2003-01-12
So much has been written and said about several of these nine legendary Disney animators that I very much doubted a lot of new ground was going to be broken, especially in a Hyperion release, but Canemaker rises to the task here, and then some. I was most interested in artists like Les Clark and Johnny Lounsbery, who have received less attention than some of the others. Canemaker not only brings them vividly to life with meticulous research, but he also manages to bring new information and fresh insight to all nine of his fascinating subjects. No matter how well you thought you knew the Nine Old Men and their work, there's plenty here for you. This book reveals the lives and personalities of these men, analyzes their contributions extraordinarily well, and also their working and personal relationships with each other, and presents great new visual material from their lives in and away from the studio. The Kimball stuff is a special treat.
Who could have imagined that Marc Davis' early life was as interesting as his work? Or that Kimball and Kahl were even crazier than you thought (and even more brilliant)? Ot that the master, Frank Thomas, actually struggled with his draftsmanship? Canemaker captures the promise of each of these men's pre-Disney careers and the spark in the work that caught Walt's attention is always evident. He also captures the human quirks that played a tremendous role in the golden age of the studio and often found its way onto the screen as well.
Much of this information and all of Canemaker's excellent insight would not have come to light without his diligent effort and research, and the result is a well-written, revealing, tasteful, and very visual masterpiece.
PS We lost the great, one-and-only Ward Kimball recently...only Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas are still with us now. God bless you both.
Discovering the Genius Of Exactly What Made Disney "Disney".......2001-11-02
John Canemaker has given readers the Disney animation book that's been missing for decades. Only it's the Readers Digest version. Canemaker is forced to compact nine amazing biographies into one book. Each of his nine subjects - the core group of gifted animators who defined the look and feel of Disney animation from the 1930's through the 1970's - is deserving of far more time and space than a single volume can deliver. Nevertheless, he's done an amazing job, and he introduces us to these men with the same careful critical objectivity he did in "Before the Animation Begins", Canemaker's marvelous 1996 book focusing on the great Disney visual development and story artists.
The author gives us the best un-fairy-dusted glimpse of the real day-to-day workings of Disney's shop since animator Jack Kinney's 1988 "Walt Disney And Assorted Other Characters" (admittedly limited in objectivity, but still enormously entertaining in its candor.) It's impossible not to feel the same admiration and passion as the author. Even in his harsher analysis of temperaments and turmoil the author is writing about the best of times among a group of very real artistic heroes who were such extraordinary people that you'd have treasured any time you could have spent in their company. Sadly, Canemaker only gets to brush on topics such as how the old generation influenced the new. Many of the current generation of Disney artists are interviewed for this book and they have a great deal of insight to contribute (both Andreas Dejas and John Lasseter in particular)and one wishes that the author had been afforded the luxury of a more critical analysis of the older generation's influence on this generation -- both by their presence and their absence; e.g. - in the best chapter in the book, Milt Kahl is characterized as having had the greatest influence on the look of Disney characters. Questions about what affect Kahl's abrupt departure in 1976 had on the next generation - whether by way of his absence or his reluctance to be a true mentor - deserve more space than alotted. Similarly, the reader wants to know more about how veteran Eric Larson was treated by Disney executives who handed over "The Small One" to the ambitious Don Bluth, who later broke ranks and left the studio to start his own production company leaving the studio talent pool seriously decimated.
Canemaker is both the obvious choice and greatest risk for authoring this important animated version of "The Lives of the Artists" (Cainmaker states it was his hope to emulate Vasari's work) as he is admittedly very close to two of his subjects - animators and authors Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston. Similarly, Ward Kimball and the late Marc Davis were friends of the author's, but he pulls fewer punches in his sharp but loving focus on the latter two. Even so, it would be hard to imagine any other author would have such an unprecedented level of trust from his subjects and their parent company, and thus such privileged access. And though his focus seems less sharp in the chapters on Thomas and Johnston, any biographer suffers from similar lapses when focusing on a living subject, particularly one whom they and the vast majority of the public hold in great affectionate esteem.
The book makes it clear that the memories of the living affect a much harsher view of the dead from among this old boy's network of disparate personalities who helped to define something as far reaching in popular culture as Disney's animated characters. Withered rivalries and carefully aged egos still pepper the perspective here and it only adds to the books ability to evoke something real, and not just the Halceon days of animation. The fact that the dead can't defend themselves even through living relatives and numerous ex-wives is a minor and admittedly unavoidable flaw, and in his preface Canemaker attempts to acknowledge it with a quote from a letter from Thomas to the author re undertaking the project. Even with obvious affection personal favorites, the author has done a terrific job of sharing insights into the passions of each of these nine men whose personalities were made immortal once filtered through such old friends as Captain Hook and Cruella DeVil.
It's to Canemaker's credit that we long for even more on each of these animators -- particularly Kahl and Larson -- and more examples of what made them great animators. Which brings us to the book's only glaring flaw: the illustrations. There simply aren't enough examples of scenes and sequences attributed to each artist -- particularly raw pencil drawings -- and the quality of photo reproductions from finished film frames and other archival material seems oddly yellow or green in tint and not up to the usual Disney publishing standards. e.g. a series of frames showing the Duke from "Cinderella" rolling his monocle between his fingers is so dark that you can barely see the referenced movement it serves to illustrate. This is greatly disappointing. Granted that many such sequences are found in Thomas & Johnston's "The Illusion of Life", but the book is out of print, and the vast resources of the Disney Animation Research Library as well as Mr. Canemaker's personal collection must be able to yield fresher and more fitting illustrations than what's found here. Again, Kahl's chapter gives us more to feast on than others, but it still isn't enough. After all, this is a visual medium we're discussing and a picture here only serves to give us reason to read another thousand written words. But, be that as it may, the book is both a MUST READ and a MUST HAVE for anyone interested in film history, animation, acting and/or Disneyana, and one hopes that Mr. Canemaker's upcoming book on Disney artist Mary Blair heralds a series of more extensive and more intimate (and hopefully much better illustrated) biographies on Kahl, Davis, Reitherman et. al. A long awaited and fine accomplishment, and easily the best book from Disney's publishing arm in 2001.

Revealing and Restoring American History.......2002-03-29
Dr. Scott has performed an invaluable service in resurrecting and correcting the history of Afro-American troops in the Spanish-American War. Scott was fascinated by the involvement of his grandfather with Black soldiers and began to research his history. His personal search became a mission of justice that he has performed well in telling of the trials and tribulations of those who fought to survive in a war against oppression while subjected to it in their homeland before, during, and after the war was over. The one paramount question that the reader must ask after reading Scott's valuable contribution to Afro-American history is:Given the racism these people were subjected to, why did they fight at all? Scott answers that question and many more in flowing prose that avoids exaggeration, hyperbole, or dramatization which are not necessary given his well-researched facts. He sheds new light on an ambition-ridden, publicity-seeking Theodore Roosevelt and his changeable views on the bravery of Afro-American troops---who probably saved him and his Rough Riders on more than one occasion---while giving their due to the unknown personalities who, all too rarely, supported and appreciated the efforts of Black troops to fight and survive in the United States and Cuba. There are many interesting and little known facts in this book that will outrage many readers and, I hope, encourage them to read more about the travails of Afro-Americans involved in the American military throughout history. A true companion book to Scott's is "The Unknown Soldiers:Black Army Troops In World War I" by Arthur Barbeau. Together these two books provide an important, detailed, and corrective history of Afro-Americans in two wars over a period of twenty years.
Remarkable in itself is the fact that Scott is a White Southerner well-advanced in age who would have witnessed the horrors of Jim Crow and racism in Alabama throughout most of the Twentieth Century. Scott presents an interesting proposition as well: If Black soldiers had not fought as well as they did in Cuba, America may not have abandoned its isolationist stance of the time and its history may have been very different.
This is an indispensable book that every American interested in US military history or the history of Afro-Americans should have in their library. Scott has done a commendable job and made an important contribution to correcting a terrible historical omission and injustice.

Reprinted by permission of Birmingham Magazine
When reading a book about soldiers and war, one expects to see quite a few pictures. That is not the case in The Unwept: Black American Soldiers and the Spanish American War. And, in a sense, that's the point of the book.
Although African American soldiers played a crucial role in the defeat of the Spanish, their participation went virtually unheralded. (Thus, virtually unphotographed.) That is, until the late Dr. Edward Van Zile Scott began researching his grandfather's life and role in the Spanish-American War. Dr. Scott's grandfather, Col. Walter S. Scott, was the white commanding officer of a company of black U.S. infantrymen in the Indian wars of the late 1800s and in the Spanish-American War.
But, The Unwept is an immensely interesting book not just because it points out the little known fact of African American bravery and skill under fire. Dr. Scott also offers a refreshing perspective on the war itself and some of its more famous participants - Theodore Roosevelt and John J. Pershing.
The Unwept is interesting because of the details. After all, it is the small things, the kindness, the pettiness, the moments of bravery and clarity that mark our lives. The Unwept offers a rare thing - a researcher's attention to detail as well as a writer's insight and crafting.

Book Description
David Horowitz is back with an indispensable manual for wartime politics. If the Democrats thought we'd forget who demoralized our military, eviscerated the CIA, and let America become a playground for terrorists, they're in for a rude awakening. How to Beat the Democrats makes sure it won't be politics as usual.
For Democrats, politics is permanent war. Every conflict is a contest for power, every battle is about burying their enemiesRepublicans. With racial shakedown artists and intolerant "progressives" rearing their heads at homeand terrorists striking at us from abroadHorowitz's uncompromising and principled commitment to freedom is more needed than ever.
Horowitz's opening salvo shows why the Democrats can't be trusted with the nation's security. For years, the party has subordinated sound defense policy to a radical ideology untamed even by September 11. Horowitz's unmatched strategic powers are on full display in his enumeration of the principles for a winning political campaign, which he then applies to specific issues. Misses the point.......2004-11-05
This book, although excellent, misses the point entirely. It gives a great description of WHAT the liberal fascists/socialist/democ-rats are doing. But, that's not even close to being the important question. The important question is not what but WHY. Want to know the answer? Just study what John Kerry has done during his life and ask yourself what pattern you see. Another example is Jimmy Carter. The same for Jane Fonda and Michael Moore. These people are traitors. As in they purposefully and repeatedly, take the side of extremely evil people, over that of the United States....to the point of interfering with our foriegn policy with both the specific intent and effect of allowing these evil people to do evil things. It doesn't matter if they are communists, drug dealers/criminals, terrorists or genocidal maniacs. Neither does it matter how heinous their crimes are. They take their side over our side. Scary stuff. Mostly, this has been allowed to happen because of sheer ignorance of what these people are doing. That is changing....big time. This election shows that VERY clearly. The dems were marginalized this election. Based on what they have planned (Hillary Clinton....don't make me laugh), they are likely to be mariginalized for the next decade or more. That's a good thing. What you will see is the infiltration of these sick people, halted, particularly in the judiciary (short term) but also in the house and congress. In short, the american people are kicking the bums out of office. Finally, you will see the democrats expunge these [...] from their ranks (they really have no choice considering how big of a liability they have become). Five years from now, people will look back on today as when it all started. Thank God for that.
Alas, if only the GOP would listen to him........2004-07-29
There is no room for RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) in our fight to win over the general population concerning the merits of conservative principles. Horowitz's book documents the fact that rightward ideas are winning ideas and will resonate with voters across the nation. This is a collection of essays, and, for the most part, they are brilliant. Two chapters, The War Room and How to Beat the Democrats, should be very influential upon politicians and the average reader. He preaches tactics and strategies that conservatives must hear and internalize. Important points are that politics are emotional and they should always be about hope. Republicans would be wise to learn from the words of this master. Ten more Horowitz's and the country would be in a much better place. He speaks his mind in beautiful prose and you'll turn these pages quickly. This is a highly recommended choice, indeed.
Bad For Righties, Too.......2004-07-07
Picked up this book in the library to read a bit of the (not-so?)friendly opposition's reading materials, and I'm appalled that even the right would buy (figuratively and literally) this crap. I didn't even finish the preface before I realized this was a crock.
How can you title a preface "How George W. Bush Became President" and NOT mention either his opponent or the Supreme Court case? "Restoring dignity to the White House"? Heck, it's 2004 and if he hasn't done it by now he's not going to.
Second thing, and what sealed the deal, about this book for me was that Horowitz seems to think it's a *problem* that half of the Middle Eastern experts at universities were from the middle East in 1992. Where the crap are they supposed to come from? Horowitz would be pissed as all get-out if US experts at French universities were from Germany. Then he'd blame the left for it.
A load of crap and a waste of time, regardless of political affiliation. Restore dignity to your library and read someone a little less racist and a little more educated.
Exposes pernicious fearmongering of the Dems.......2003-04-07
David Horowitz exposes the Dems' lowbrow and underhanded campaign tactics that they use with reckless abandon - playing the race card and instilling fear of the "evil" Republicans into their dim-witted constituents. Horowitz, a former far left anti-war activist of the 60's, knows the virtually isurmountable depths to which the Left will plunge in order to achieve their egomaniacal objectives - power and prestige.
Horowitz explicates the Democrats' insular and inane platform: Big Government that should, when in doubt, tax and tax again mercilessly - and spend your hard-earned money on a wasteful bureaucratic agenda that serves the Democrats' own agenda. Horowitz explains the incessant pandering of the Dems to their indigent and indolent constituents consisting of illegal aliens, minorities, and anti-Americans. They somehow continue to maintain their voter base through a degrading, yet somehow effective, strategy that instills fear into their followers' hearts that the Republicans will eliminate Social Securtiy, abortion, and institute a racist regime the moment they are elected. This book should evoke fear into the hearts of sanctimonious fearmongering Dems everywhere.
Great Book for Republicans!.......2003-03-11
As usual, Horowitz delivers a great read. This book is divided into three sections. First, the undermining of American security by the Clinton Administration. What you will read is absolultely shocking. We have all heard the criticism of Clinton for his indiscretions, but this is much worse. After reading this, you will have an even greater appreciation for President Bush. The second section is where the title of the book comes from. He deals with the various strategies of the Democratic Party and offers ways for the Republicans to counter them. He also addresses many of the major issues of the day and explains how Republicans can take the high ground and defeat the Democrats on every issue. Anyone who is on the fence about the privatization of Social Security needs to read what Horowitz writes. The last section appears to be a collection of essays dealing with various radical groups and people throughout recent history and what they are doing today--you will be surprised!

Book Description
Deer in Manhattan, coyotes in the Bronx, wild turkeys flying down Broadway -- in this first truly urban period in human history, confrontation and competition with the natural world is becoming an everyday occurrence. Anne Matthews explores these encounters, examining the implications of this unexpected and powerful resurgence of nature for the fate of a world of supercities and suburban hypersprawl.

Boston Globe Review.......2004-02-01

Smart, scary, moving.......2002-11-06
This is definitely a book about nature for people who think they can't stand nature prose. Not at all sentimental, wonderfully written, full of startling facts, 'Wild Nights' is a lovely and terrifying portrait of the wild New York hiding in plain sight. The last chapter makes me want to move out of the city immediately--but where? As Matthews reminds us, nature was here first, we've pushed it much too hard, and now it's pushing back, globally, locally. Hard as it is for our species to accept, nature always wins.
Eloquent Rambling.......2002-08-19
What I liked: There were many interesting stories about how human society and wildlife have interacted over time. There's the guy who catches falcons on New York sky-scrapers, in order to tag and track them, or the folks intrepidly searching for bits of an old railroad station where they've been dumped in the New Jersey Meadowlands.
What annoyed me were the wild, almost hysterical visions of potential dystopian nightmares of what may happen to cities, particularly New York, and humankind at large, in the near future. While I personally found the claims plausible and interesting, I was frustrated at the utter lack of any annotation to back them up.
After recently reading some hard-hitting, well-researched, and utterly fascinating commentaries on the modern world economy: Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation" and Naomi Klein's "No Logo," both of which present a well organized stream of thought-provoking claims, backed by footnotes, Anne Matthew's novel felt like listening to a well-read savant rambling on, at random, about how interesting her life's work is to her, at least. The sort of person you politely listen to rant away, take a few interesting scraps down to carry with you, and then politely disengage yourself from. In short, she's better heard in the occasional segment on NPR than in an entire novel.
The book feels like the product of a researcher who has slapped together bits and pieces of personal notes as they came to her, with no thought towards editing them together or cross-referencing them with source material, in order to push through to the publisher to meet a deadline.
... and yes, this book is totally New York-centric, to an annoyingly exlusionary degree; I'll be gifting mine to a cute NYU student as a gift.
Wow!.......2002-06-19
I was engrossed with the facts and thrilled by the many directions of the witty style of Anne Matthews and found "Wild Nights" thoroughly entertaining and very informative. And, having lived in "Gotham", I can attest to the accuracy of much of the content. It's thought provoking how much is missed when we don't remember to reflect on the sequence of events. Anne Matthews has captured a linear progression of history, natural and other, and displayed it interestingly. One star omitted due to the last chapter's jaunt to Armageddon.
Lost in the Bronx.......2002-06-18
There is a major problem with Wild Nights. And i will lay it out:
There is a chapter called "deep time in the bronx" in this book which I assumed would have dealt with the Bronx--however the bronx was never mentioned in it.
Very confusing and very bad....Why title a chapter "deep time in the bronx" when this borough is not discussed in any way?
Is it to convince readers who are interested in the bronx to buy matthews' book?
What happened? Did editors snip out all mentions of the bronx in a chapter titled "deep time in the bronx"? Or did the editors of this book fail to notice that the bronx wasn't mentioned in a chapter titled "deep time in the bronx"?
I would like to know how this occurred, because I really wanted to learn about the bronx's geology, which I assume what the author meant by "deep time in the bronx".
Please explain to me what happened to the discussion of the bronx in a chapter titled "deep time in the bronx."
I really want to know.
