Modeling Dynamic Climate Systems (With CD-ROM)
ASIN: 0387953175 |
Book Description
The effects of disturbed ecosystems, from devastating algal blooms to the loss of whale populations, have demonstrated the vulnerability of the oceans¿ biodiversity. Conservation of marine systems requires knowledge from many different fields in order to understand the complex interactions that threaten those systems. Dynamic Modeling for Marine Conservation provides a method of learning how these systems function, determining how natural and human actions have put them in peril and how we can best influence the marine world in order to maintain biodiversity. The difficulties of research and experimentation in the oceans make computer modeling particularly helpful for marine conservation. Modeling also enables scientists to communicate their findings with managers and others concerned with putting their ideas into practice. The book will demonstrate dynamic modeling through the use of the STELLA modeling program and case studies from marine conservation. After a section devoted to the concepts and tools needed to model marine systems, each chapter introduces background information about a key topic in marine conservation, presents an appropriate model, and discusses the results and implications. Contributors bring a wide range of expertise and experience to a selection of models relevant to real-world conservation problems. All models and a run-time version of the STELLA software are included with the book on a CD-ROM, which is compatible with both Macintosh and Window platforms.

Detour for Emmy by Kally Vorbeck.......2006-09-27
First of all Emmy is a freshman in high school. She lives with her brother and her mother. Her brother is a drug attic who is always in rehad, well most the time. Emmy's mother is always out drinking. Shes only normal half the time. Well while Emmy is in school she meets a guy named Art. She finds out that he likes her too so they start dating. Emmy is constantly sneaks Art in and out of her house while her mother is out drinking. Art is a straight A student and has big plans to go to standford college. Also, Emmy had big plans of attending standford for her college education. Emmy and Art start partying with eachother and become closer and closer everyday. One night Emmy has sex with Art and don't really want to, but she does. Art always tells her that if she loved him she would do it. Art always trys pressuring her to have sex, so one night they have sex on a beach. Emmy forgets to use protection. After awhile, Emmy starts to feel sick and is throwing up often. So Emmy goes to the nurse at school. The nurses gives her a checkup and Emmy finds put that she is pregnant. Emmy is scared, confused, and dont know how to tell Art. So during choir, she trys to explain to him the problem. Art doesnt beileve her until she srarts crying and passes out. Emmy and Arts relationship starts falling apart from there. When Emmy told her mother, she was furiated. She was sure her mother wasnt going to help her, and what she thought was right. Emmy was alone and by herslef for the nine months of her pregnancy. Her mother wouldn't help her and would barely talk to her. When Emmy has the baby her and Art get back together. Emmy and Art took the baby over to Arts house. At first when Emmy and Art told his parents, they didnt beileve them. His father and mother thought that it was just a child Emmy was babysitting for. The baby has the same birthmark as Art and its in the same place. Now they know that its Arts baby for sure. A little later in time, Art and Emmy breakup and Art goes off to Standford like he planned. Before he leaves he visits Emmy and the baby (Rosie). Now Emmy is living at home with her mother, cant go off to standford and live the life she wanted.
mystian detour for emmy.......2006-05-31
be tide down to a child. Once young Emmy starts to show her pregnant belly the school makes her go to a school that deals with things like pregnant teens. What's unfair about this is she has to leave while art gets to run around care free Emmy has to quit chorus which she loves to do. She even has to give up the one thing she loves the most which is soccer. But the worst is yet to come. The night that Emmy does get to go out after she has her baby Rose her date turns out to be a total jerk. He tries to rape Emmy, but what hurts the most is that he labels her a [...]. I feel this way because he tells her before he force him self on he "it's not like you a virgin". To me this mean that if a girl has sex with one guy that it gives a sign to other guys that she'll have sex with any one. To me this book is stereotyping all teen mothers. But what about the fathers? I would recommend that all young girls who are being pressured into having sex to read this book. This book is the ultimate birth control.
My Review .......2006-05-25
Now in this situation, if you read this story, you would be very shocked. ok it starts out wit emmy, she is a freshman at high school, who lives with her mom, who is drunk half the time, and her brother, who is a drug attic, and is in rehab most of the time. ok and dont you think she has many problems of her own. then she meets Art Rodriguez. who is a straight A student( as well as Emmy) and he has major plans in going to Standford College when he graduates. ok so he meets emmy and like he starts to like her, and emmy feels the same for art. then she has sex one time in her brothers bedroom, and she didnt no how to put the condom on the right way? lol. and when she had sex, she started bleeding, then she did it again at the beach but this time, she didnt use any protection, thinking you know, she believe art n what he says that " he pulled out in time" that right there is such a lie? but anyway.... emmy finds out she's pregant then art doesnt belive her until she passes out at choir class. and then the nurse tells her she might be pregnant. so right there emmy and art's relationship go down hill from there. then Mr. Rodriguez(art's dad) sees art's baby for the first time, and thinks that emmy is babysitting for someone else, then she tells him that its his grndchild, art's baby, her baby. then afterward art's family are happy and upset, just because emmy had a baby that was art's, art's mom doesnt believe that Rosie is art's baby, her birthmark looks exatly like art's and its in the same place, she thinks she got her baby tattooed? now that right there is ridiculous, who in the world would get there baby's birth mark tattoed? but then Emmy and Art break-up,and he gets ready for Standford, but before he goes, he stops by Emmy's every night before he leaves for college. and visits them two. and then they finally break up and then Emmy finally finds someone else.. in the end. so hopefully that they will bring out another story in that one.
My favorite book of all time........2005-09-10
I read this book when I was in 8th grade which was a year ago. I first found it online and wanted it so badly and when I finally got it, I was rushing to finishing my work so I could read it some more but, when I finished it, I was sad because that meant that I couldn't read about Emmy anymore. This is a story about a strait-A student who, in her freshmen year of high school, falls in love with Art, also a strait-A student headed for Stanford but when she finds out she's pregnant because of unprotected sex on the beach, Art says it's not his because of the pull-out method which apparently doesn't work(no,duh!). So Emmy, gives up everything for her child while Art goes to Stanford and doesn't even tell his parents about his child. Before, you go and think it's just another teen-pregnacy book, know this: it's not! This book shows sacrafice, love, and how you can discover how strong you can be. A must-read. If I could chose a book to read for my english class, again, I'd choose this even though a teacher proably wouldn't approve it for a class read, but it's perfect for an independent read. This book also shows girls that the only way to not get pregnant, is to not have sex.
Excellent Read for Teens.......2004-01-06
This book was on my teenage daughter's recommended reading list at school. My daughter is not an avid reader but after giving this book accolades, I decided to read it myself. I found this book very well written and the message was conveyed clearly and realistically. After reading this book, I had a discussion with my daughter and was amazed and delighted to see that the book had reinforced all the things I have been teaching her about the consequences of teenage sex that had seemed to be going in one ear and out the other for years. Peer pressure in high school is overwhelming enough as it is, and this book accomplished in a much better way, what I, as a mother, have been trying to accomplish on my own. Written from a teenage viewpoint, this book helped my daughter relate in a much better way than I or any other than any parent could strive for. The only thing my daughter complained about after reading this was that she felt the author should have stressed more on the difficulty in caring for a baby on a day to day basis, especially for a teenager (i.e. the everyday trials and tribulations you go through from the incessant crying, walking the floors all night, teething crankiness, chasing after them, dealing with illness and the extensive patience (and maturity) one needs in order to cope with a baby every single day). This book should be on every required reading list in schools across the United States. It should be viewed as an excellent aid in teaching teens across America the importance of safe sex and abstinence. Kudo's to the author on this accomplishment.

Book Description
This book presents a general picture of our current understanding of plant embryology from the formation of floral organs concerned with embryological processes to the genetic manipulation of embryos. Against the background of classical embryological studies, chapters in this book highlight, from a molecular-genetic perspective, investigations on the development of the male and female reproductive units, male sterility, incompatibility, fertilization, embryo and endosperm development, storage protein synthesis and adventive embryogenesis in flowering plants. Dramatic new developments in molecular biology and genetic engineering techniques have opened up new frontiers in our commercial exploitation of flowering plants. Manipulation of embryological processes to improve the quantity and quality of plant food products is one of the cherished goals of plant biologists and the work described in this book provides the up-to-date fundamental information necessary to achieve this goal.

Book Description
Humor, wit, and laughter surround us. From everyday quips to the carefully contrived comedy of literature, newspapers, and television we experience humor in many forms, yet the impetus for our laughter is far from innocuous.
The Game of Humor makes intriguing and enjoyable reading for people interested in humor and the aspects of human motivation. This book will also be valuable to professionals in communication and information studies, sociologists, literary critics and linguists, and psychologists concerned with the conflicts and tensions of everyday life, as well as students in these areas.

solid narrative.......2006-12-07
Willie Perkins was road manager for the Allman Brothers Band from their scruffling days in 1970 through the peak of their popularity. He continued in varying capacities until the end of the 1980's when the band changed management companies. For the biggest part of a year he was Duane Allman's roommate on the road, so if anyone knows where the bodies are buried, he does. While he supplies a solid and conherent narrative, he rarely goes into any detail and leaves the reader wanting more. This is particularly true when it comes to Dickey Betts more mercurial tendencies and the twisted financial dealings of the band with Capricorn Records. Yet the strenth of the narrative itself provides a framework on which to place and evaluate other (sometimes mythological) stories. As a writer his style is flat, rarely showing the passion he had to have to work with this organization for so long.
However, I feel like I come away knowing the characters better, and the details of the infamous Grove Hill bust are worth the price of admission. I recommend the book. In combination with Randy Poe's Skydog, and Jan Reid's recent book about the Layla sessions, and Chuck Leavell's wonderful Between a Rock and A Home Place, the reader can get a fair presentation of the band's story.
My thoughts on the book........2006-07-24
I thought the book was well written and told the truth. Being a fan of the ABB for over 30 yrs I found out much that I did not know! This book, in my opinion, should be read by all ABB fans! I enjoyed the book!
A great book about what it says it's about.......2006-06-17
As the book itself says, this isn't a comprehensive study of the ABB. What it is is a nice series of cronological essays about Willie's time with and around the ABB. It is a quick but satifying read and a must for any fan of the ABB or music of the late 60s and 70s. It is a nice view into those lived it.
Sticks to the basics.......2006-01-05
As noted in the acknowledgments, this is just a personal memoir and not a full-blown history of the Allman Brothers Band--so anyone who says "he's an awful writer" had better get their eyes checked. Perkins lays out his thoughts and stories in a very simple but plain fashion--in some spots, it's more a collection of essays. (He's honest about it, and not every autobiography is meant to be in-depth with insightful deep meditations of actions and deeds.)
Yes, as noted elsewhere, he's fiercely loyal to the band, but the deceased members were close friends--so what else would be expected? And no, the ABB and associates were not known for their social graces either.
What Perkins does well is to give a glimpse into the financial and management whirlpool that can be found in the music industry. Any wanna-be managers or agents would be well off reading this if only to learn more about the reasons why it's sometimes insane to say "I'm with the band" and expect nothing but fast and exciting living without paying the price.
Ok for true fans.......2005-09-10
Some very interesting stories and facts presented by the author who was there for all of it, so fans will enjoy the behind the scenes look. But he is still clearly emotionally involved with the band and nary a bad word or ill advised story come across. Plus, he is an awful writer.
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly good.......2007-04-12
I wasn't expecting much when I bought this book on the discount shelf some years ago. I was pleasantly surprised. It covers the campaign, not just the battle itself. Pretty good maps are present, and many pages of interesting "sidebars" in which Sarf elaborates for a page on certain particular incidents or technical aspects of the campaign. Nice touch.
It's not up to the towering work of John S. Gray's "Custer's Last Campaign" which is probably the best currently on the market now. However Sarf has much interesting and reliable information.
The Place to Start.......2001-08-06
Here's where to start if you want to read just one book on the Summer Campaign of 1876 against the "off-reservation" plains indians. This paperback from 2000 is a reprint, with a few minor corrections of misprints, of the 1993 hardback edition. The only actual new text is the "preface to the revised edition," dated May 1999.
Sarf's approach is even-handed, and he has a real eye for telling details and for vivid quotes from participants and eyewitnesses. Boxes set apart from the main text give needed detail and background, particularly on individuals participating. A great deal of exotic color is provided by the various indians who rode with both sides in the conflict. For example, riding with General Crooke were The Other Magpie, a beautiful female warrior, and Finds Them And Kills Them, a transvestite who dressed and lived as a woman except during battles! You don't encounter soldiers of that calibre in most military histories!
The Summer Campaign of 1876 is distinguished by the almost staggering military incompetence displayed by the U.S. Army leaders. Apart from Custer, who generally seemed to know what he was up to, and the canny Nelson Miles, virtually every commander in the field seemed to be clueless, cowardly, vacillating, and in a couple of cases (Gibbon comes to mind at once) apparently paralyzed by mental illness.
Well-written and extremely readable. If you have ever wondered how Custer really got into that very bad fix, this is the best place to start your quest for understanding, and Sarf also offers a good annotated list for further reading.
Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Little Bighorn!.......2000-09-01
As one who has collected and read scores of books on Custer and the Little Bighorn, I must say that this book is the most concise, even-handed, and readible account of this most controversial period in American history. The author makes the many facets and personalities of the events of the summers of 1876-1877 come alive with his colorful writing and honest evaluation. This book is the perfect starter for anyone who is either casually interested in the story or is a useful summary for those veterans who have been fascinated with the Little Bighorn and Custer for some time. Also the sidebars used throughout the text help to make the persons, places, and things of the campaign stand out in their historical context. I heartilly recommend this book and am very happy that it is now out in paperback for an even greater audience. If you want to know the story of the Sioux War of 1876 and 1877, begin here!
An Objective Up to Date Complete History of the LBH.......2000-06-30
Wayne Sarf has researched all the master historians in the past and present to provide a fascinating well written history and objective book on the LBH and Sioux Campaign. The book tells the complete history of the campaign from its inception to its finale, Custer's and the Sioux's as a free people. Sarf quotes both the participants concerning their actions in the campaign as well as perspectives of major historians. He also offers his own views based on the historical record and logic. An important example is his evidence and commentary concerning General Terry's June 26th rendezvouz which is pure fiction and self serving. As Sarf well proves, Custer acted judiciously and appropriately based on the information, circumstances and the expectations provided to him in synch with all the military commanders . Unfortunately for him, the circumstances changed once he was committed to the attack. Wonderful perspectives including side bars on the military participants, weapons and Native Americans. Also includes a readers guide for additional reading including critiques and some cheeky comments.
GREAT ONE VOLUME ACCOUNT.......2000-05-25
MR SARF HAS PRESENTED A GREAT ACCOUNT IN ONE VOLUME ON A DIFFICULT SUBJECT THAT IS UP-TO-DATE IN REGARDS TO RECENT DISCOVERIES. HIS BOOK REMAINS FOCUSED AND ALLOWS THE READER TO WEIGH THE FACTS WITHOUT BOGGING DOWN IN CENTURY-OLD ARGUMENTS. THIS BOOK WAS WORTH THE WAIT TO BE BACK IN PRINT DESPITE THE MANY DELAYS IT TOOK TO GET IN PRINT AGAIN.IF THE READER IS A NEW LBH-INVESTIGATOR, THIS IS THE BOOK TO START WITH!

It's impossible not to like Jack W. Germond, the veteran journalist who became a household name for political junkies during his 15 years on The McLaughlin Group. He's a reporter's reporter, the kind of fellow who knows that for every good story "you spend two or three rainy Friday nights at the airport in Atlanta trying to fly standby and ending up as the fat man in the middle seat." Germond cut his teeth at a small newspaper in Michigan, where he began to master his trade: "Once you learned to deal with Carlos Gastambide, the business agent for the largest UAW local at the Monroe Auto Equipment Company, you would not likely be intimidated again by any source at any level, up to and including the White House." He later rubbed elbows with some of the best-known journalists of his generation, and his memoir contains plenty of anecdotes about these colleagues (David Broder, Tom Brokaw, Robert Novak) as well as the people they covered. His chapter on The McLaughlin Group, which he abruptly quit in 1996, is a real highlight, revealing both his disdain for television's "lowest common denominator" programming and the medium's awesome financial temptations. Like most reporters, Germond is a conventional liberal by temperament--yet readers of all political stripes will enjoy his fast-paced recollections. --John J. Miller
Book Description
For more than forty years, Jack Germond enjoyed an extraordinary career in political reporting. With his trademark no-nonsense style and tremendous wit in abundance, Fat Man in a Middle Seat remembers the personalities that dominated national politics during Germond’s career: Richard Nixon, Hubert Humphrey, Eugene McCarthy, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton. Germond writes about the real stuff of politics and captures the details of the reporter’s life on the road—the off-the-record briefings and strategy sessions, countless late nights in bars, and overcrowded Friday-night standby flights. In the words of Tim Russert, this is “quintessential Germond—candid, insightful, and irreverent.”
Customer Reviews:
The Real Thing.......2006-04-04
Like Robert Casey, the great war correspondent of WWII, Jack Germond is a journalist's journalist. In this book, he not only expresses the values of a great journalist, but illustrates them by reporting what he knows and how he gathers information. He even writes about himself, to make his personal bias clear, as good journalists do. One gets the feeling that he used everyone he ever talked to--in bars, at dinners, on airplanes, in offices--as sources for his political beat. Hard drinking? Sure. Uncompromising? Always. Informed? In depth. It's interesting to note that his prose in this book differs from that of his newspaper columns, which use shorter and simpler sentences, an indication that he knows how to write in different forms. His "insider look" at the political figures of our time, warts and all, illustrate Epicurus's observation that "fate is character," because character controls choices. He changed my view on Dale Bumpers, but I'm not sure that I'll accept his pronouncement that Dave Yepsen is one of the great political reporters of our time, until David Broder agrees. And I'd have to say that Broder can get people to talk without imposing on them, although both listen more than they speak. Other than that, Germond is a great political correspondent, who is willing to share his experience, particularly with those who know how to "read between the lines." If he seems a tad pessimistic, well, experience makes cynics of us all, and he experienced America's slide into disposable leadership, which is why he's worth reading.
Entertaining.......2005-09-09
This book is written by a very entertaining individual who has an extensive knowledge about politics. On top of being informative, he gives his information in a stylish flare that can only be characteristic of Germond. Great book!
Basically My Concept of a Journalist.......2004-08-05
I liked this book. JG is basically my concept of a political reporter. He was intimately involved in the lives of Robert Kennedy and Jimmy Carter, one could argue. So being a journalist means looking deeply into the psyche (soul?) of a politician, without being too close or personally involved. This became a problem with Jimmy Carter. Maybe this is why there are few, if any, Germonds out there.
Germond's comments on Reagan are pretty amazing, to me. The same for Clinton. I guess he's getting more bitter. I have the new book, but I picked this one up used on Amazon, and I'm pretty sure it is the more significant book.
I never quite knew what the deal was with Germond on McG Group. Now I do. That's where I really grew attached to the guy. Sorry it was such a bum experience. Dr. M does not come off well, yet he basically seems to have spawned Chris Matthews, another rather wildly pretentious churno-journo.
I really didn't find any hatchet jobs in the reviews. I'd like to thing Germond commands this kind of respect. I guess I'm not giving the book 5 stars because this man has had a life that was terribly special. I think he needs to offer a little more perspective, be a little more grandly philosophical, at this point. You know, without being pretentious.
Sharp-eyed snapshots from 40 years on the campaign trail ..........2002-04-09
At a time when the term "liberal" has come to be a dirty word, and mass media punditry is dominated by corporate suits pushing a Big Business agenda, it is refreshing to see a blue-collar journalist dissect politics from the perspective of the old school of newspaper reporting.
Drawing on his 40 years of experience covering everything from local mayoral races to national presidential campaigns, Jack W. Germond has written "Fat Man In A Middle Seat" as both a memoir of his encounters with some of the past generation's most interesting political personalities and an analysis of the news coverage the public gets of those candidates. In each case, Germond's observations are astute and fascinating, but ultimately discouraging for what they reveal about the men who hold or seek power, as well as how they are portrayed to the voters.
Culminating in the farcical non-election results of 2000, and the atrocious reporting of the outcome, Germond reaches his inevitable conclusion that he no longer expects the system to ever "get it right" and produce real executive leadership or accurate press accounts of current events. Now semi-retired in West Virginia, he makes it depressingly clear that the failure of broadcast and print news to adequately explain what was at stake for the direction of the country (both during and after the 2000 presidential race) represented a new low in American journalism and politics.
Maybe worst of all, Germond notes, too many modern journalists apparently never even tried to pierce the market-tested, micromanaged images that the Bush and Gore campaigns spoon-fed them. This did not serve the public interest and, Germond argues, it led directly to the situation in which we saw the travesty of a Supreme Court case determining control of the federal government. Without exaggerating, he says, the future of democracy itself may be at stake if this trend in superficial reporting continues.
Surprisingly, however, Germond reserves his most scathing comments for former president Bill Clinton. Coming from the left, this savage indictment of the Big Creep's pathologically selfish character is more devastating and effective than anything the Republican attack dogs ever produced. Other descriptions of John and Robert Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Sr., and many presidential wannabes are equally crisp and vivid.
Perhaps the best thing about this work is Germond's impressive candor and modesty about his own accomplishments and mistakes. He is honest about his personal and professional errors in judgment, and does not seem to have an ax to grind against his ideological opponents. That alone sets "Fat Man In A Middle Seat" apart from the self-bronzing, unctuous autobiographies of most fourth estate superstars. Read this book if you want a breath of fresh air in the dry desert of what passes for media criticism and political commentary these days. With grace and grit, Germond makes his life ring true.
Mencken, Germond, and the Baltimore Sun.......2002-02-16
It's as if lightning struck twice. HLM the ultimate conservative curmudgeon, JWG much more the right, but not quite, and not consistently so. HLM the scholar, dealing with the big picture, JWG with personalities, up close and personal. A great book: no need to wonder what Jack really thinks about Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton. Jack was the only reason we watched The McLaughlin Report. He nails the pompous (call me Doctor) McLaughlin and candidly informs us how much he and the other participants were paid. It's also refreshing to read that he thought the Herald Trib under James Bellows was a much more entertaining and interesting paper than the Times. This is not a book for middle-of-the-roaders, and that's exactly why it's so refreshing to read it. You're one in a million, Jack.

Dorothy Freeman, a fan of environmental writer Rachel Carson, was also her best friend. The correspondence between them charts the growth of their long affection; it also offers much detail about Carson's concerns as a writer and scientific reporter, to say nothing of her misgivings about being anointed as one of the environmental movement's chief intellectual leaders. The letters are full of talk about birds, books, and the changing seasons. Fans of Carson--and of the forgotten art of correspondence--are sure to enjoy Always, Rachel.
Book Description
Rachel Carson's landmark book Silent Spring set the modern environmental movement in motion. This very special collection of letters from Rachel Carson to her Maine summer neighbor Dorothy Freeman offers an intimate, spellbinding look at Carson's private life and thoughts.
An intimate collection of letters from the woman who sparked the modern environmental movement.
"What is revealed in this selection of letters is the extraordinary, private person of Carson and her relationship with Freeman, the nature-loving, homebody friend of her later years. . . . It is not often that a collection of letters reveals character, emotional depth, personality, indeed intellect and talent, as well as a full biography might; these letters do all that."
-Doris Grumbach, The New York Times Book Review
