Book Description

The environmental crisis is global in scope, yet contemporary environmental ethics is centered predominantly in Western philosophy and religion. Earth's Insights widens the scope of environmental ethics to include the ecological teachings embedded in non-Western worldviews. J. Baird Callicott ranges broadly, exploring the sacred texts of Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Zen Buddhism, as well as the oral traditions of Polynesia, North and South America, and Australia. He also documents the attempts of various peoples to put their environmental ethics into practice. Finally, he wrestles with a question of vital importance to all people sharing the fate of this small planet: How can the world's many and diverse environmental philosophies be brought together in a complementary and consistent whole?

4 out of 5 stars It's About Ethics and What We Do to the Land.......2001-03-14

I'm thrilled to find this paperback. Calicott tries to answer the ethical questions which have been ignored by all converts to the New Individualism.. The author is a philosopher and an excellent academic writer. It took me a while to get used to him. Since 1994 this work has been a guide for writers who deal with the ethics of land use. In the U.S. we perceive the land as a commodity. Calicott surveys the ecological ethics of many cultures, now overwhelmed by Euroculture. He starts in the Mediterranean Basin with the historical roots of our environmental attitudes and values. Then he covers the rest of the earth including those of the original settlers of the Western Hemisphere. But he also details "A Postmodern Evolutionary Ecological Environmental Ethic"and contrasts it with our traditional environmental actions. He admires the work of Hindu environmentalists as well as Buddists in Sri Lanka and Thailand. Where else can we learn about this?

      Book Description

Rick Ward wants to go to war.

He doesn't know why. Maybe he's running from his dad, who has an uncontrollable temper. Maybe he's running from a lost love, his high-school sweetheart, who is a stranger to him now. Or maybe he's just running -- to find himself.

Desperate to experience real life, Rick enlists in the army with the Charlie Rangers, a special unit in Vietnam. They infiltrate the jungle, kill with precision, and get out quickly. Rick isn't sure he can shoot anyone, but he wants to be tested, like his heroes, Hemingway and Conrad. If he can see the heart of darkness and survive, he'll be a man -- and finally have something to write about.

But as Rick discovers, war isn't what anyone -- either the protestors, the politicians, or the writers -- say it is. It's far bigger, scarier, and more complicated than anything he could ever have imagined.

Dean Hughes captures the sights and sounds of war -- and the courage of a young soldier fighting to survive.

      Customer Reviews:

      3 out of 5 stars Vietnam Lite.......2007-10-01

Hughes has written a book that does give some sense of the horror and misery of combat. But by providing a stalwart Mormon (he's not only pious; he kicks ***) to guide the tyro soldier, Hughes weakens the book with pat spiritual bromide. Strongly recommended for the LDS.

      4 out of 5 stars Gritty.......2007-01-11

Although the book was presented as a book for adolescents, it was targeted more for early adult. It follows some of the more disturbing parts of the Vietnamese war through the eyes of a late teen who has little clue of what he wants out of life. He learns that war is indeed hell. I would recommend this as reading for any late teen considering joining the military.

5 out of 5 stars Reprinted from the Aug 2006 "The Historical Novels Review".......2006-08-26

Rick Ward, a confused boy from Long Beach just out of high school, drifts into the army. He may be running away from an overbearing father, a pointless existence of beach parties, or perhaps he just needs to do something meaningful. In that spirit he goes to Vietnam and volunteers for the Charlie Rangers, an elite group who infiltrate the jungle to beat the enemy at their own game. He wants to be tested, to experience life like his heroes, Ernest Hemingway and Joseph Conrad. Most of all, he longs to be a man.

He discovers that nothing about war is what he or others had thought. He finds himself in a restricted world of just he and his team, trying to survive in a jungle hell, where the highest honor is not fighting for his country, or even just surviving, but helping a buddy to stay alive, to make it back to `the world.'

This is a powerful story about how war profoundly changes a man. The ugliness of war screams off the pages--its horror, hypocrisy, and utter futility. The author does a marvelous job of blending this with the larger realities of the Vietnam era, not shrinking from the controversies but not taking a stand either. The truth is too complex, too overwhelming for any one individual to understand. In the end, it is the individual's humanity that counts.

This skillfully written book is highly recommended for teens and adults.

      Book Description

The war on drugs, begun in the Reagan Administration and presently continuing unabated, has resulted in an explosion in the American prison population. Whether a desired effect of the war or not, this increase has been accounted for by a severely disproportionate number of African American males. Jerome Miller demonstrates in Search and Destroy that an African American male between the ages of eighteen and thirty-five has an inordinate likelihood of encountering the criminal justice system at some point during those years. In a wide-ranging survey of blacks and the justice system, Miller notes the presence of bias among police officers, probation officers, courts, and even social scientists whose data form the basis for many policies and social workers whose responsibility is allegedly to members of the underclass.

A small-time entertainment promoter Martin Mirkheim owes $147,956 in back taxes. Martin, it seems, wants to do "something of significance"--specifically, to produce a movie. The movie he has in mind will be based on a book by his hero, Dr. Luthor Waxling, a late-night television self-help guru. Waxling is a menacing, neo-Nietzschean type who preaches that "the past is pointless," that apologies are worthless, and that strength is its own justification. Although Martin is enchanted with this message, his only real "strength" is his shamelessness: desperate to find financing for his dream project, he refuses to acknowledge any of the incredibly humiliating things that happen to him along the way. There is a shere twist in plot and in a twist of fate the enemy is the victor.

        Book Description

Witty, acerbic, razor sharp: Ted Rall has been called a spokesperson for his generation. But the political cartoonist doesn't leave anyone untouched - even his own Generation X - as he focuses his caustic imagination on everything from pop culture to the environment, from underemployment to political trends. Search and Destroy is Rall's first cartoon collection in five years. His previous books, Waking Up In America and All The Rules Have Changed were best-sellers, especially among young people looking for someone to voice their frustrations, their hopes, their angst. Likewise, his groundbreaking book of essays and cartoons, Revenge Of The Latchkey Kids, spoke loudly across generations. Ted Rall brings an insightful understanding into the forces that are shaping our society today.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hits out at "the system" with a smile on its face..........2003-09-02

Probably the best collection of Rall's work available in print. This is a christmas cracker for anyone even half switched-on. Ted never gets boring and his subject material is extremely wide. Pick a political bad apple, and he pulls it all apart with gleeful abandon. By the last panel, you'll be wondering whether to laugh or join the local anarchists' group. This is my kind of life-blood.

        5 out of 5 stars humorous.......2003-01-25

This is great book to acquainted with the humor of Ted Rall. It consists of a collection of comic strips that Ted Rall picked as his favorite from the last five years. The book includes ones that were and weren't published. Most of the strips have an explanation of why Ted thinks it is worth being included in this collection, or the what point the strip was trying to convey. I don't know what else to write about without giving anything away, so I will just say that this is worth every penny that Amazon[.com] is asking for and you must buy this.

4 out of 5 stars Bitter, Yet Funny.......2002-07-18

The work of Ted Rall has a polarizing effect, I think. Either you laugh uproariously yet ruefully and say, "Rock on, my man! Power to the people!" or you clench your teeth in rage and growl out, "America--love it or leave it, you pinko punk!" Pretty much, if you voted for Reagan or either Bush, then you'll tend to the latter reaction.

Mr. Rall evidently stews in perpetual bitterness over the myriad injustices of contemporary American society. In no particular order, he appears to loathe and despise his father, bosses, lawyers, corporations, Republicans, fellow cartoonists, his father, Hollywood, the school system, and also his father--pretty much all of the accepted and customary targets of the left. He has virtually no trust in any major institution and gleefully skewers them without mercy. Of course, given the domestic track records of recent Republican administrations and the squalid, greed-infested, and sorry state of corporate governance these days, he's perfectly justified in his hatred.

Despite the overtones of rage, most of the collected strips are extremely funny, and his style is distinct and unique. Some of the strips have appeared previously in alternative weeklies, but others are drawn from his work for other publications.

Avoid this is you're an overly sensitive and humorless adherent of the right wing; otherwise, pick it up for both the laughs and the provocative challenge to your world view.

5 out of 5 stars Not your usual cartoons.......2001-05-24

I learned more about politics, history and social issues from reading Rall's cartoons than from newspapers or history books. His take on the hot issues of our times cut thru the spin and baloney like a hot knife thru butter. Go for it if you are tired of listening to talking heads and spinmeisters!

        5 out of 5 stars Awesome Cartoons.......2001-05-24

Check out this collection of hilarious and biting cartoons, I loved it from start to finish! Very clever and inventive, and had me laughing out loud on the subway. Ted Rall is New York's best kept secret, but I bet he won't be for long. A delight!

This is a reprinting of an amazing San Fransico 'zine from the late Seventies. There is incredible, otherwise unavailable coverage here of many obscure West Coast Punk groups, with helpful scene reports from around the US and the world, essays on early Punk culture and politics, and impressive artwork and photos. The interviews are unique and far from obvious, providing insights into the personalities (and record collections!) of many important musicians. Impressive interviews with Pere Ubu, Dev-o, and the Screamers, among many other groups. This book also provides a detailed look into the S.F. and L.A. Punk scenes (who partied where with whom and what happened). I highly recommend it to anyone interested in the wild west Coast Punk culture of the late Seventies. Flaws? 5 out of 5 stars Primary Source Material.......2000-08-18

This book is fabulous primary source material for those interested in the emergence and maturity of the punk subculture. Jon Savage's book (England's Dreaming) tells the history of the scene nicely, but THIS reprint gives some real insight into the attitudes and motivations of the kids who were involved, and adds the American perspective. Some of the characters from the 70's punk scene were just into looking cool and partying, and some were really interested in music or politics, but the common theme here is youth's feeling of alienation from the rest of society. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

                      Product Description

This popular text, Teaching Fractions and Ratios for Understanding, addresses the urgent need for curriculum materials that cross traditional boundaries to include many of the elements that are integrated in the teaching/learning enterprise: mathematics content, teacher understanding, student thinking, teaching methods, instructional activities, and assessment. The book pushes readers beyond the limits of their current understanding of rational numbers, challenging them to refine and explain their thinking—without falling back on rules and procedures they have relied on throughout their lives. Written in a conversational and easy to understand style, this is not a textbook as much as it is a resource book. An underlying assumption is that facilitating teacher understanding using the same questions and activities that may be used with children is one way to help teachers build the comfort and confidence they need to begin talking to children about complex ideas. Unlike a textbook that is used to study formal theory and then discarded when it comes to putting ideas into practice, the many problems and activities included to facilitate teacher learning are valuable resources for use in elementary and middle school classrooms. Changes in the second edition include: • even more student work incorporated in every chapter; • discussion of the connectivity between the topics addressed in the book and the elementary and middle school mathematics curricula; • an increased emphasize on measurement; • expansion of some topics, including number sense, percent, scale factors, similarity, and linear graphs; • clarification of the characteristics of ratio and proportions and how to use these to generate discussion with children; and • content-related interview questions for exploring children's thinking. This book is a valuable resource for researchers and curriculum developers in mathematics education, pre-service and in-service teachers of mathematics, those involved in the mathematical and pedagogical preparation of mathematics teachers, and graduate students in mathematics education. The methods and activities it includes have been tested with students in grades 3-8 and with pre-service and in-service teachers and other adults. This text is accompanied by MORE—a supplement that is not merely an answer key but a resource that includes in-depth discussions of all the problems in the text; develops and extends discussion of the issues, teaching problems, and other considerations raised in the chapters; and contains additional problems—with and without solutions—that instructors may find helpful for assessment purposes.

This book is a supplement to the text Teaching Fractions and Ratios for Understanding. It is not merely an answer key, but a resource that includes in-depth discussions of the problems in the text; develops and extends discussion of the issues, teaching problems, and other considerations raised in the chapters; and contains additional problems—with and without solutions—that instructors may find helpful for assessment purposes. In the second edition, MORE has been reorganized so that supplementary activities immediately follow the discussions of the activities from the text. Solutions to these supplemental activities have been removed to facilitate the use of MORE in courses. Nevertheless, because the number of activities in each chapter of the text has increased and complete discussions of all of them are provided in MORE, there is ample opportunity to learn reasoning methods.
