Movie stars, rock stars, pond nymphs, intergalactic superheroes . . . who are the real goddesses in Francesca Lia Block's world? Real young women--the kind who ache, bleed, dance, and talk to blue ghosts in closets. Famous for her lyric Weetzie Bat books, Block blossoms in this collection of short stories about love: straight, gay, familial, and otherworldly. Very few young adult authors talk as frankly as Block about sex and some of the other yearnings we feel in this world, yet she guides her readers toward the self-respect and courage necessary to make smart choices about those yearnings.

            Book Description

Meet Tweetie Sweet Pea and Peachy Pie, Jacaranda and Rave and Desiree...

Meet Lady Ivory and Alabaster Dutchess, who interview their favorite rock star, Nick Agate, only to discover the magic and power in themselves. Meet Tuck Budd, who is happy living in Manhattan with her two moms, Izzy and Anastasia, until she begins to wonder who her father is. Meet La, who faces the loss of her mother with an imaginary androgynous blue friend who lives in her closet. Zingingly bright and dreamily dark, full of wonder and gritty reality, these stories by acclaimed author Francesca Lia Block show the reader that in every girl there truly is a goddess.

The cutting-edge author of Weetzie Bat once again breaks new ground with Girl Goddess #9, nine stories about girl goddesses of every age and shape and color and size, wearing combat boots and spiky hair or dressed all in white. One girl has two moms, another has no mother at all but a strange blue skinned creature that lives in her closet. One is a rock star groupie, another loves dancing and reading poetry and having picnics in the backyard when the moon is full. These are stories about girls discovering that the world is not a simple place and that there is more than one way to live'all in Ms. Block's rich, lyrical language that fans have come to adore and that Sassy magazine called `a dream.'

            Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Well...At least it pleases people.......2007-04-23

I read this book as soon as I got it and immediately felt like I'd frozen. I've been reading her books sinc I was like 12, and this was the first time I'd ever felt dissapointed.
I mean firstly I couldn't get into the story "Girl Goddess #9" because it was just plain boring. I know that this was one of her first forays into writing because of how stilted it is. How bland the writing was.
"Winnie and Cubby" Word for word of another story she recreated in an anthology that mad me like her. "Winnie and Tommy" Wow. Just wow. I liked it, but you could tell that she was reeeallly aiming for the YA audience in this book. Seemed like a YA wrote it themselves. :(
I mean I'm not a big fan of the book, but it is cute. Her euphamisms are great, the writin is solid beyond being quite cheezy...but hey lots of people like it.
I just read it in an hour and said to myself "Wow how corny." and I think the story I liked least was "Dragons in Manhattan." The story premise is good, the message not so great. But Block has a way of letting teenagers run away smoke drink and have sex, plus eat cake and get offered niceties by older people while they get their fairy tale ending. If you like that, read this book. If you want something a little more real I'd suggest:

Kiki's delivery Service. Or any oldschool "Kid's book" the writing may surprise you.

5 out of 5 stars another great one by francesca lia block.......2005-08-11

Francesca Lia Block never ceases to amaze me and with this book she proves just how awesome of a writer she is. With her poetic style and writing of topics that a lot of people deal with every day from homosexuality and the loss of a parent to drug use and schizophrenia and being without friends (almost all 9 stories center around the lead girl character with the exception of a few) With this book F. L. Block proves that in every girl lives a goddess and we should embrace that and be proud that we are a goddess and no one can take that away from us.

            5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book.......2005-04-16

Girl Goddess #9 is an amazing book.

It captures many different modern teenage girl voices.

            Yeah Francesca!

            3 out of 5 stars cute.......2004-10-18

I really enjoyed the first story in this book. About Sweet Pea and Peachy Pie. Cute. The other stories are okay but the first and 'Rave' are worth a read. Sometimes I read the stories and wished for more, but most of the time I wished that FLB wrote with better grammer skills. She loves to start a sentence with And. It gets annoying. If you want to read a better book from FLB try Violet and Claire or Echo.

            5 out of 5 stars Every Girl's Diary.......2003-01-13

I look back now, and I realize that Girl Goddess #9 was a big part of my formative years. It was the first FLB book, and it still one of my favorites.

When I read the title story, I remember thinking, "Well,I like Sarah McLachlan, maybe I should give Tori Amos a try." (If you don't know how that story ended, well, know that I think nothing of driving ten hours to go to a Tori concert.) And, a year or so later, I re-read the story and thought, "Hey, I like Sarah and Tori, maybe I should try the Cocteau Twins." Thus began another addiction which annually saps me about fifty bucks.

I was going through major issues with a very dear friend as I read "Pixie and Pony," and for years now, those words have stayed with me: "Best friends? We are sisters." After my mother's injury, I struggled to reconcile the reality of her new self with the way she had once been. The story "La" was of enormous help.

GG#9 is every girl's diary. It is all of our fears and hopes and drems. It is everything we've questioned about life, our futures, our parents, our sexuality, and love. Each girl is perfectly unique, very mysterious, and yet completely familiar. Each of these girls is like a little facet of each other, and of ourselves.

There are a dozen of similar Simulink books in the market but this is the one you should get. 4 out of 5 stars A story of triumph.......2006-06-08

This is a story of the triumph good over evil. In some ways it is much like the many mythological stories told to young Indian children at temples and schools by their elders.

The important thing in those tales and in this one as well, is to realize that just because something is "evil", it isnt entirely unholy or deviod of any good. Bhasmasura, the demon whom this tale is based on, was a very powerful and devoted disciple of God. Similarly, Vasu has his strengths as well. The reader will notice how the two faces of the same coin start merging. The simple print shop owner who was docile and timid enough to print the lawyer's invites for "free" changes over the course of the book to become more street wise and less of a push over much like Vasu.

Every form has its good and bad. R. K. Narayan wraps up this little nugget of truth with some very humurous touches in The Man-Eater of Malgudi.

                        3 out of 5 stars Ok.......2001-11-06

It was an ok book. Didn't really come together till the end, made it hard to understand and really enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars The Maneater Rulez.......2001-07-21

This is the most unexplainable book! I cant say whether its stupid or ot. its so hilariious but has too much of inimportant and useless stories which have no relation with anything. i have to write a book report so i read it. anyone else who has too will really like it. i didnt think it would be good but pretty much liked it. i like the ending especially. anywayz, now i'm going to copy the other persons review, give it to my teacher and get 5/5. thanx amazon and the reviewer from manchester!

                        5 out of 5 stars One of Narayan's best.......2000-06-27

"Man eater of Malgudi" by R.K. Narayan, one of India's first internationally-known writers who chose to write in English, is easily one of the author' best works. Vasu,a big blustering bully, moves into the lazy little South Indian town of Malgudi, the fictional town in which nearly all of Narayan's stories are set, and overturns the life of Nataraj the town's printer. A colourful retinue of other characters: the "sizzling" prostiute Rangi,a poet, Nataraj's practical assistant, the lovable temple elephant Kumar...all add to the novel unique charm and fascination. Much of the novel's complexity lies in the fact that Narayan loosely bases his tale on the ancient Indian myth of a blustering demon Bhasmasura who terrorises the world of mortals. Much has been written about Narayan's 'comic vision'. Beneath the frothy light-heartedness of 'Man eater...' is a serious and complex exploration of many issues central to life in modern India - an individual's caste and how it determines his life and relationship with others, the battle between 'good' and 'evil' and how these values are determined by a society, the confrontation between modernity and tradition - a way of life which is thoudands of years old. These issues are further highlighted by the fact that Narayan uses English the language of 'modern' India and, at the same time, adopts the rhytmns, sytanctic structures and diction which make for a unique brand of 'Indian English' The novel also transcends the regional in that it touches on some of the tragi-comedy of human life, some of the boredom, horror and glory that make up our existence.

                        5 out of 5 stars One of Narayan's best.......2000-06-20

'Man eater of Malgudi' by R.K. Narayan, one of India's first internationally acclaimed writers who chose to write in English, can easily be rated one of the author's his best efforts. A story set in the small South Indian town of Malgudi in which most of Narayan's stories are set,'Mane eater ...' captures much of the mind-bogglingly intricate aspects of modern Indian life. Much of the complexity of the novel comes from the fact that Narayan's plot is loosely based on the Indian myth of 'Basmasura' a powerful demon who wreaks havoc on the world and is finally destroyed in the most ridiculous manner. Much has been written and said about 'Narayan's comic world view'. It is perhaps wise to think of this novel as a good instance of the writer's amazingly complicated use of the comic mode - under the light-heartedness, charm and cheer is a powerful awareness of the complexities of Indian society and indeed, life itself : the conflict between tradition and modernity, the intricate inter-caste dynamics which dictate the way characters think and relate to each other, the war between 'good' and 'evil', 'weak and 'strong'. Narayan captures some of the beauty, the sadness, the laughter and the glory of human existence. The author's use of English is especially interesting because Narayan's very 'Indian' English capttures the syntactic structures and rhythmns of India's native languages. Besides, the use of a 'modern' Western language in this little Indian town which is still deeply rooted in a way of life which is thousands of years old, itself signifies some of the novel's themes.Narayan's mode of story-telling owes much much to the ancient Indian tradition of ofolk-narrative . One can say without any much, exaggeration that this one of the best books in English ever written by an Indian.

                                          Book Description

"Paul Wellstone, we miss you. Few politicians, especially these days, are as willing to stand up and speak the truth as Wellstone was. In this era of flaccid rhetoric and pre-approved sound bites, he had the rare ability to ignite a fire in his audiences. Bill Lofy's excellent biography rekindles that fire and reminds us just how much politicians of Wellstone's honesty, character, and spine are needed---now more than ever. This book should inspire a new generation of voters and political leaders alike."
---Arianna Huffington, columnist and editor of HuffingtonPost.com

"This book captures the vibrant spirit of my friend Paul Wellstone---the fierce commitment to justice that defined his life, and that shapes his enduring legacy."
                                          ---U.S. Senator Russ Feingold

"Paul Wellstone was a great leader because he fused progressive idealism with a stubbornly pragmatic politics. Bill Lofy's book captures that dual commitment in his story of Wellstone's life, and also shows us the extraordinary human appeal that Wellstone emanated in his relationships with people in all walks of life. This book is an engaging read that also tells us a lot about the political practice to which we should aspire."
---Frances Fox Piven, author of The War at Home

"This vividly written book captures the life and personal qualities of the late Senator Paul Wellstone. In so doing it provides an illuminating gloss on Max Weber's seminal exposition of the political vocation. It is a jewel of a book."
                                          -Fred Greenstein, Princeton University

Bill Lofy's fast-paced and readable biography tells the inspirational story of one of the most compelling figures in the history of American politics---Senator Paul Wellstone.

Yet Lofy's book is more than just the chronicle of Wellstone's life and political career; it's also an indispensable guide to what ails political life today. Readers politically inclined or not will find in its pages a handbook to the uncertain and often treacherous business of politics and a stirring example for living a courageous and honest life---whether as public servant or private individual.

This biography was one of the best I've read in a very long time. It wasn't overly long and drawn out, I read it in one sitting. Of course, I have great admiration for the subject, so I am biased, but the book would stand on its own merits. Sometimes a biography can get too bogged down in irrelevant details of the subject's life, but this definitely wasn't one of them.

5 out of 5 stars A Tribute to a Life Short but Well Lived.......2005-11-16

Regardless of your views on either the left or the right, you have to appreciate the life that Paul Wellstone lived. From a kid in trouble to college professor to United States Senator is neither an easy nor a likely path. But that's what Paul Wellstone did.

In this book Bill Lofy, Communications Director of Wellstone Action, the organization created to carry on Paul and Sheila Wellstone's legacy after their death, writes a biography of his life. But more than that, this book provides some insight to the problems that beset political life today. The point of view of Mr. Lofy is, of course, progressive or liberal as we used to say. More than that, though, is the love that he shows to Paul Wellstone as a person, not just a politician.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Northfield's Own.......2005-10-13

What first started out as an article on the impact of Paul Wellstone's politics, Bill Lofy's Paul Wellstone: The Life of a Passionate Progressive transformed into a biography to be reckoned with. Starting with Paul's childhood and formative years to the day of his untimely departure, the book captures Paul's deep convictions and principles for social justice and progressive changes, which had forever altered the domestic politics landscape. One could double the biography as a platform for Paul's radical, oftentimes effective mechanism "...for the little guy versus the big guy." In a nutshell, Mr. Lofy succeeded in presenting Paul's bold resolve to espouse populist idealism in sharply divided American politics by foraying into academic politics and community activism and inevitably the Senate, as if he knew that, quoting the start of a chapter, "to be sure, mere passion, however genuinely felt is not enough." Presumably written on the behalf of many, this book is an embodiment of Paul's passion and integrity to remain genuine in the face of victories celebrated and failures embraced with dignity and humor. Resonating Paul's strength and vigor, the book offers lessons in life and leadership for everybody, regardless of affiliations. From the wresting mat to unorthodox campaign strategies, Paul's uncanny ability to rise in times of uncertainty inspired his constituents to "raise hell," like the book asserts Paul liked to say. However, that transpires the impulsivity Paul had acknowledged from time to time while remaining true to himself not to make decisions he did not believe in. In calculating courage in action, Paul showed us how, quoting Max Weber, he "...would not have attained the possible unless time and again he had reached out for the impossible." Conclusion can be made that the book is not just about Paul's impact on politics but also his passion for everybody. In the same vein, the book would share that when Paul visited a deaf awareness fair, he marveled at sign language and asked how to sign "beautiful." Like the book, that gesture of genuine appreciation for humanity Paul had so revered throughout his life could not be better exemplified.

Bill Lofy's Paul Wellstone: The Life of a Passionate Progessive is a brillant book. Mr. Lofy has distilled the essence of Senator Wellstone and unequivocally demonstrates just why Wellstone was so special, why he changed peoples' lives and why he is so missed. This book is more than a recounting of the Senator's life. It also provides thoughtful and moving political analysis of Wellstone's work and achievements. Abraham Joshua Heschel, the noted Jewish philosopher, historian and social reformer, said shortly before his own death that we must "Know that every deed counts, that every word is power...Above all, remember that you must build your life as if it were a work of art." Paul Wellstone's life was such a work of art and Bill Lofy shows us why.

                                            --Middle East Journal

During the anti-Gorbachev coup in August 1991 most communist leaders from Soviet central Asia backed the plotters. Within weeks of the coup's collapse, those same leaders--now transformed into ardent nationalists--proclaimed the independence of their nations, adopted new flags and new slogans, and discovered a new patriotism.

How were these new nations built, among peoples without any traditional nationalist heritage and no history of independent governance? Olivier Roy argues that Soviet practice had always been to build on local institutions and promote local elites, and that Soviet administration--as opposed to Soviet rhetoric--was always surprisingly decentralized in the far-flung corners of the empire. Thus, with home-grown political leaders and administrative institutions, national identities in central Asia emerged almost by stealth.

Roy's analysis of the new states in central Asia--Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tadjikstan, Kirghizstan and Azerbaijan--provides a glimpse of the future of an increasingly fragmented and dangerous region.

In this book, Olivier Roy makes several sweeping generalizations about the history of Central Asian states. His research is solid and in depth, however, his application is quite opinion-based.

The material has the ability to create significant discussion on the topic of former influence by the Russian and Soviet powers, yet his points are sporadic and randomly placed throughout the book. His arguments often stray from his own research and fail to provide foundation as well. This is seemingly a result of his need to confirm his own prior opinions on the matter.

One stands to greatly benefit from the research provided by Roy in this book. However, read cautiously and be aware of the existence of more recent research which shows major flaws in his point of view. I would recommend that individuals study Central Asian history and politics personally before jumping into Roy's book whole-heartedly.

This book is packed with useful insights but it is not for the Central Asian novice. I give it two stars because it is hard to read and could be better organized. The information in it is five star. It is a graduate-school level analysis of the evolution of the current Central Asian nation-states. It is what would be expected from a person in Roy's position; researcher at the Centre National des Recherches Scientifques. The book was originally written in French and translated into English for this edition. That in itself is not a problem but the writing style is one that has a heavy "fog factor". There are numerous sentences that are 60 words long and contain multiple commas, parenthetical statements, hyphens and semi colons in one sentence. If you can slog through syntax you can glean a lot of useful information. My suggestion is you have some understanding of Central Asian history and geography before you attempt this book. The lack of maps would make it really difficult for a beginning reader of Central Asia. Central Asia in Historical Perspective (edited by Manz), although a graduate-level text, is better organized and easier to understand.

4 out of 5 stars Caution to the reader.......2002-07-17

I purchased this book after I developed an increasing interest in the politics and history of Central Asia. At that point, I had read a couple of books on the topic, leaving me with a feeling of general competence. This book, however, was seriously beyond my level of knowledge, and I'd like to caution readers with anything below a superior understanding of Soviet and Central Asian History. The author "jumps" around the region quite a bit, creating problems which compound themselves, particularly as no maps are included anywhere in the book. If you do not possess an intimate knowledge of the geography, I suggest waiting until your mental map is more complete (as I'll be doing).
The book is translated from French. After reading about 20 pages, this fact amazed me from the vocabularly chosen by the translator. I can't remember the last time I had to use a dictionary, but this book sent me searching on more than one occasion. Moreover, the writing style is incredibly dry, even for a work of history. "New Central Asia" is loaded with solid research and cogent argumentation, but the presentation leaves much to be desired.

Olivier Roy is a well-known expert on Islam, the Arab world and Central Asia. His The New Central Asia is an excellent examination of the creation of new nations that emerged from the end of the Soviet Union in 1992. He contends that while these new republics are in search of identity (in essence creating new nationalisms), they have also inherited the older Soviet system of rule and institutions, which were not democratic and more oriented to personality cults and heavy-handed treatment of the opposition. This explains the difficult path countries such as Uzbekistan and Tajikistan have had through the 1990s and into the next decade. For anyone looking at the problems of development as well as wishing to obtain a better understanding of a pivotal geo-political zone, Roy's well-researched book is worth the read.

                                            Book Description

From the first game wardens in the Everglades, who had to buy their own uniforms and guns, to present-day wildlife officers, who often fulfill the role of police officers, law enforcement in the wild, untamed Everglades has kept pace with changing times. You're just as likely to find today's game warden chasing escaped convicts, keeping surveillance on drug runners, or recovering wreckage from a plane crash as arresting deer, turkey, and alligator poachers. And you're more likely to encounter game wardens who are female and college educated now too. Gone are the days when game wardens were often former lawbreakers themselves and came by their jobs simply because they knew the Glades so well. Ride along on an airboat as it whooshes through sawgrass marshes. Hitch a ride on a track as it chugs and grumbles over the Glades' rough terrain. Meet the men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting the wildlife and natural resources in the only Everglades on earth.

Long after the Wild West had come under the umbrella of civilization, lawmen had yet to stop the outlaws of Florida's Everglades. Plume hunters, gator poachers, smugglers and the vilest of murderers found seclusion and concealment amid the sawgrass and reptiles of America's greatest wetland. It took a special breed of lawman to track down and arrest the bandits who ruled the Everglades. Jim Huffstodt's subject matter is history in his book, "Everglades Lawmen," but his writing style is that of a southern "yarn spinner," one who recounts the tales as an old-timer would, sitting around a campfire with group of wide-eyed children hanging onto every word. Everglades lawmen were the toughest creatures in the swamp. Otherwise they would never have survived and never would have succeeded in taming the Everglades and tormenting its outlaws. In fascinating detail and lively presentation, Huffstodt recounts the tales that trace the transition from the times when wilderness law enforcement rested in the hands of men of iron up to today when Everglades lawmen...and women...rely on science and technology to build their cases. They still are men and women made of iron. They have to be to patrol alone, at night in the swamplands where some of America's most wicked criminals have sought consealment for centuries. But today, the criminals live in fear, because they know the Everglades lawmen are lurking in the darkness, just out of sight...watching, waiting...ready to swoop down on them like red-tailed hawks upon the snakes the bandits are. Huffstodt recounts tales told by the lawmen and versions of the same stories told by the outlaws they tracked. He captures both in a beautiful, understandable style. Hats off to Jim Huffstodt and his "Everglades Lawmen."

The true tales of the people who dedicate their lives to protect our resources, are not only exciting, but served to enhance my appreciation of the jobs they do. I sent this book to my brother (an officer in Pennsylvania), to reinforce that while most calls end up as "routine", there is no such thing as a routine call. This book doesn't disappoint!

Everglades Lawmen tells a great story about the many and varied jobs facing today's game wardens.

The books goes into the early game wardens and the skills needed to get the job done in the "good old" days. The tragic stories of man killer alligators and the role of game wardens in protecting the species. Some great "war stories" about chasing and catching some interesting and colorful poachers.

Huffstodt does a great job telling about the many dangers facing today's game warden which the majority of the public has no idea about.

Highly recommended to anyone who cares about the natural resources left and what is needed to protect them.

Mr. Huffstodt did an excellent job of imparting to the reader the feel of the Everglades and the dedication necessary to protect the wildlife of this region. One could almost feel the wind blowing in your face as you travel by airboat across the pages of Everglades Lawmen. Thanks for a great read and I am looking forward to the next book by the author.

I found "Everglades Lawmen" to be great reading. A must for every Game Warden and outdoor enthusiast. I was impressed with the cohesive manner in which the author was able to bring the many stories together and make the book so interesting. Having been familiar with many of the events depicted in the book, it is very obvious that the author did his homework. I highly recommend it to readers of all ages and interests. It's what Game Wardens do every day and what they all take for granted, but most people in our society never hear about.
