        Book Description

This book brings together the writings of well-known travellers to Morocco and offers a fascinating picture of Moroccan culture through their eyes. Among those included are Pepys, Defoe, Twain, Orwell and Wharton, as well as famous Muslim travelers such as Leo Africanus and a host of others--merchants, sailors, consuls and scholars--who all recorded their impressions of the place. In addition to sketches of sumptuous entertainment, nbsp;colorful festivals, and the infamous pirates of the Barbary coast, there are descriptions of childhood, marriage and the practice of medicine in old Morocco, as well as some favorite Moroccan folk-tales and recipes.

This relatively slim volume (190 pages) should spark an interest in visiting Morocco for sure. First and foremost there are the absolutely gorgeous, brilliantly colorful photographs of faces and places in the many wonderful towns and cities of this vibrant country. The photography of Ian Burgum manages to showcase Morocco fantastically in all of its many-hued glory. This alone should make you want to discover more.

The guidebook is divided in the usual sections on "`Background" information, including history, the land, culture, festivals and governance; "First Steps," "What to see," "Getting Away" and the "Directory" (shopping, entertainment, children, sport and leisure, food and drink, hotels and accommodation, on business and practical guide).

I found the maps well designed and easy to follow and the suggestions for walks and drives very interesting. The "Features," highlighted with a beige background, were definitely fascinating reading, ranging from the expected topics on architecture and the royal family to the less expected ones such as carpets, tea and sustainable travel. I found them one of the best parts of this guidebook.

While accurate and useful, the amount of information is very limited and leaves you wishing for more detail. We used this guidebook during our recent visit to Casablanca and found it accurate, but lacking in depth and detail. If you do not count the pictures and the map, the written info on Casablanca, a city of over 4 million inhabitants, was only a bit over two pages long. We are well aware that a price of admissions, taxi rides etc. change, but a rough guide on those would have been extremely handy; as would have been more detailed information on sights and places of interest.

If you are going to spend a very limited amount of time in Morocco, this guidebook, "Travellers Morocco," should be sufficient to give you a general idea on the area, but it does lack the depth and details for a longer stay. The best part of it is probably the "Directory" section, which lists quite a few useful tips and pieces of information. My favorite quote is "Toilets - Moroccan toilets do not have the best reputation. Where tourists congregate they are comparable with Western toilets; elsewhere things are little more than rudimentary. It is wise to carry a roll of toilet paper. Courage is of the essence." To this observation of the author, James Keeble, I would only like to add the following - practice squatting and balancing ;-)

The very interesting travel adventures of Frances Mayes, the author of a popular book about living in Tuscany. She goes into great detail about the food and the sights. Most of the countries she describes are in the Mediterranean area.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Actually- 3.5 stars.......2007-08-06

I take some issue with all these negative comments. This book is best read over about a month in snippets, there are many chapters and some excellent writing, in fact this book inspired me to go to Portugal and a few other places I wouldn't normally think of. I am sad to agree with Frances, call me a snob, I do try to avoid certain types of Americans while travelling. You know them when you see them. Internatinal travel is about getting to know the locals, not some crass American (or Brit, or Russian, take your pick) on a adult spring break. I found myself, at times, thinking, well Frances, I wish I had the luxury to travel as you do, but again, she is wealthy and retired. Someday! Let's face, her kind of travel takes research and sometimes it isn't as easy as hopping on a cruise ship and getting a cliff notes tour. Again, I have to agree with her, who would want that? Not me.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty in small doses.......2007-07-21

Frances Mayes writes lyrically, giving a certain poetry to her travels and leaving the reader with a sense of sunshine, crisp linens and savory, satisfying meals. However, the writing is slow, sometimes self-important, and thick with description. Mayes has a heavy inner dialogue that references favorite writers and poets and memories of Georgia and other travels. There is a sense of name-dropping as well, a little bit of haughtiness that may come off as condescension. Several other reviewers have noted that Mayes has little regard for her fellow American travelers, and she does write with a sense of superiority.

2 out of 5 stars I'm done with Frances Mayes.......2007-07-18

Like many of the other reviewers, I enjoyed her Tuscany books. But by the end of this book, I can't stand her anymore. I will never buy or read another of her books. It's a shame, because there is some lovely writing here (the only redeeming factor that allowed me to give this book two stars rather than one), especially about the food and some of the nice people she has met.

But in the end I think she is a self-righteous elitist. What was the final straw is when she was on Capri, and she looked at a group of tourists getting off a boat and thought if there were any Americans she didn't want to know. Ugh. Lady, those are the people who have bought all your books and made you and your weird poet husband Ed gazillionaires.

Speaking of Ed, I couldn't believe it when he was so sick in Morocco and she decided to leave him in the hotel room and go off on a tour of the place. You have got to be kidding me. How uncaring and selfish -- if that were my husband I would be doing whatever I had to do to get him back home and to see that he was comfortable so that he could recover.

I now feel about Frances Mayes the same way I feel about those people I was friends with for years and now no longer speak to or have anything to do with -- I will take some lovely memories of our time together, but it's best in the end if we just part ways.

                      2 out of 5 stars Boring snob.......2007-07-02

This book is okay - not great. I love travel books but the author's snobbish attitude got on my nerves. She deigns to go on a cruise and then cruelly mocks the tacky fat vacationers. She is constantly writing with disdain about tours and group travel and pointing out the superiority of her way of travel, renting houses. Near the end, she sees a group of tacky ppl and she and her husband run away, afraid that they will be Americans. Sounds like she went on some great trips, but I don't care to travel with such an obnoxious brat.

                      Book Description

At the Manhattan School for Art and Music, where everyone is “different” and everyone is “special,” Gretchen Yee feels ordinary. She’s the kind of girl who sits alone at lunch, drawing pictures of Spider-Man, so she won’t have to talk to anyone; who has a crush on Titus but won’t do anything about it; who has no one to hang out with when her best (and only real) friend Katya is busy.
One day, Gretchen wishes that she could be a fly on the wall in the boys’ locker room–just to learn more about guys. What are they really like? What do they really talk about? Are they really cretins most of the time?
Fly on the Wall is the story of how that wish comes true.

Fly on the Wall is a YA book that came out last year. It is Lockhart's second or third YA book. Basically, the story takes Franz Kafka's plot from The Metamorphosis and brings it into the modern world and into a book that would appeal to teenage girls. And, for that reason, I almost didn't read it. I hated reading The Metamorphosis in high school and, to be honest, I still strongly dislike the book and avoid Kafka at all costs because of it. BUT, I am happy to say that the similarity to Kafka's novel begins and ends with this fact: Gretchen Yee one day wishes she could be a fly on the wall of the boy's locker room at her high school. The next day she wakes up as just that.

Gretchen wakes up stuck to the locker wall and she stays there for most of the novel. A fact that, surprisingly, does not make for a boring story. Gretchen gets to observe the boys as they come and go for each gym class. Lower classmen, acquaintances, friends, and even her crush, are all available to scrutinize. Instead of just learning, as she had expected, about what the boys really think and say behind closed doors--Gretchen also gets a chance to find out how she fits into the school. The book is broken into three parts: Life as an artificial red-head, Life as a vermin, and Life as a superhero.

I like Gretchen a lot as a character. She goes to an art school (like La Guardia for any New York natives reading this) in NYC where everyone tries to be special. In a school with girls wearing unitards or saris and cliques like the Art Rats, Gretchen feels too ordinary to belong. Gretchen is also a comic book fan which almost always makes a character fun to read about. Excuse the pun, but after being a fly, Gretchen's metamorphosis from insecure to empowered girl really starts.

At times Lockhart's language seemed a little . . . unique. You can tell me what you think after reading her segment on "gherkins" *ahem*. I don't know if it's that she's using slang that I find weird and this is therefore only my problem, but it just made me hyper-aware that I was reading a book at certain points in the story. Also, to address some concerns of other reviews: Yes, Lockhart describes what the guys look like while they're changing in the locker room and yes, there are curses. But saying it's pornography is going a little far. Personally, I'd be much happier to see a teen or tween reading this book rather than Push or The Bluest Eye (both of which deal with sexual abuse yet perennially appear on reading lists in high school English classes).

As for the plot, it's a classic problem-resolution kind of story. Which I like. If you need to pick up something light and fun after a sad book (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian perhaps) I'd recommend this. The writing is straight forward and Gretchen is such a unique character that even if you thought Metamorphosis spin-offs are over done (I'm thinking of all those Fly movies right now), you'll find a lot to call new and novel here (that pun was intended too). Finally, even though you think the book is about a girl turning into a fly which is a fair assumption, it's really about more than that too. Specifically, it's about a girl learning to go after what she wants. Now you may ask, does Gretchen get what she wants? You'll have to pick up a copy yourself to find out.

                      1 out of 5 stars A book for teens--NOT!.......2007-04-07

We wonder why the morality of our kids is going down the toilet. When books are being marketed to teens that are laced with pornography, explitives, and the "F" bomb on every other page. This book only qualifies as porn...and since it is about minors, that would make it child porn, which, iirc, is illegal in most areas of the country. [...]
The precept is good, and the story premise is different. It could have been done though without blatantly exposing children to pornography.

1 out of 5 stars WARNING FOR PARENTS - This book is PORNOGRAPHIC !.......2007-03-30

This book is filled with 4-letter words. The "f" word is used throughout. The premise of the story is a teen girl turns into a fly, and goes into the boys locker room. She describes in detail, boys' anatomy, and a large part of the book is spent describing boys' genitals, and how she feels upon seeing them. She also discusses how seeing the naked boys makes her want to pounce on them and stick her tongue down their throats.

My 12 year old daughter picked this book up out of the children's room in our local library. It has a cheerful, little-girlish pink cover. My daughter thought that it was going to be a fun adventure story of a girl who turns into a fly. It is an adventure story, but an x-rated one. Fortunately, my daughter stopped reading, and brought the book to me when she encountered the first 4-letter words on the first pages.

I highly object to this book being marketed to CHILDREN, when between the girly-pink cover it is undisguised, blatant pornography. While I do not care what other adults read in the privacy of their own homes, to have this book being marketed for children is unethical, immoral by any standards, and should be illegal.

You have to be 18 to purchase pornography. You should have to be 18 to purchase this book.

4 out of 5 stars Fly on the Wall: How One Girl Saw Everything.......2006-12-16

I wish I was a fly on the wall of the boy's locker room! Boom, there she is. A fly, stuck in the boy's locker room.

Short, funny, and interesting. I cannot say it was the best book I've ever read, but I have read worse. So, it can't be that bad. I personally liked it.

5 out of 5 stars great, very original.......2006-09-12

At Manhattan School for the Arts, where Gretchen Yee is a sophomore, "normal" is out. Even her stop-sign-red hair isn't nonconformist enough. (But if everyone is a nonconformist, aren't they really all conformists?) Her drawing style is all wrong too -- it looks too much like a comic book (duh! Spider-man IS a comic book). If that's not enough, she has to eat lunch by herself, because her best friend, Katya, is too busy smoking with the Art Rats; her parents just announced; and she's in love with Titus, but is too chicken to do anything about it. Gretchen wishes she could be a fly in the boys' locker room, just to learn more about them. Inexplicably, she wakes up the next morning to find that her wish has been granted. Over the next week, she learns a lot -- and not just what an A+ booty looks like. She learns that boys are all different: that they have feelings, too; that they can feel insecure and bullied. She learns that everone's perception of other people is different -- and some perceptions of her are quite surprising. And she learns something about her friendship with Katya that shocks her. Though the circumstances are implausible, Gretchen's thoughts and the things she learns are quite typical, and keep the story realistic. Gretchen is quite a likeable character, and the reader will be eager for her to put her new knowledge to good use.

                          Book Description

Analytic procedures suitable for the study of human disease are scattered throughout the statistical and epidemiologic literature. Explanations of their properties are frequently presented in mathematical and theoretical language. This well-established text gives readers a clear understanding of the statistical methods that are widely used in epidemiologic research without depending on advanced mathematical or statistical theory. By applying these methods to actual data, Selvin reveals the strengths and weaknesses of each analytic approach. He combines techniques from the fields of statistics, biostatistics, demography and epidemiology to present a comprehensive overview that does not require computational details of the statistical techniques described. For the Third Edition, Selvin took out some old material (e.g. the section on rarely used cross-over designs) and added new material (e.g. sections on frequently used contingency table analysis). Throughout the text he enriched existing discussions with new elements, including the analysis of multi-level categorical data and simple, intuitive arguments that exponential survival times cause the hazard function to be constant. He added a dozen new applied examples to illustrate such topics as the pitfalls of proportional mortality data, the analysis of matched pair categorical data, and the age-adjustment of mortality rates based on statistical models. The most important new feature is a chapter on Poisson regression analysis. This essential statistical tool permits the multivariable analysis of rates, probabilities and counts.

1 out of 5 stars The worst book I have ever bought.......2001-10-03

Over my time at university I have always bought a lot of books. This is the worst book I have had the misfortune to buy.
The Matlab Help facility is far better than this book.
Do not buy this book. The book by Etter is bound to be far better than this.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to get started in MATLAB.......2001-07-14

This book gets you off to a running start in using a very complex programming language, MATLAB. There are step by step instructions, and numerous examples of how the function is used, and what it does. It also points out common problems, so you can avoid them. Similar functions are grouped together in chapters, so you can understand the differences easily. This book is an organized approach to getting what you want from MATLAB, even for a novice user. Not a waste of your time. An excellent tutorial.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent reference and tutorial book on MATLAB!.......2000-04-04

Matlab has evolved into an advanced piece of software for scientific and engineering computation. Although it is an easy-to-use software, it has grown in number of commands, functions and different data types. This makes necessary to have a good reference to take advantage of all its functionality and to be efficient in its use. Pärt-Enander and Sjöberg make this process easier providing this comprehensive and practical guide that may be used as a reference -commands and functions grouped conceptually in boxes for easy location-- or tutorial due to the abundant (around 200) of easy-to-follow examples. The book is intended for learning and reference to beginning and intermmediate users and as a reference for advanced users. The material is presented independently of the discipline where it may be used, there is no waste of words in the easy-to-understand descriptions of commands and functions.

The book contains fifteen chapters, four appendices, a bibliography and list of command tables, all this in 559 pages of printed material. Most chapters are self-contained, so you may digest them independently if you have some experience in using the software. The first two chapters are suggested reading for beginner users of Matlab, there you will find a brief introduction about what you can do in Matlab and know how to to basic operations such as starting and quitting, assignments, saving and loading data, arithmetic expressions and mathematical functions and defining your own functions.

Linear algebra is covered from basic to advanced topics: creation of new matrices and their operations, operations on strings, cell matrices or cell arrays conatining different data types, bitwise operations, and sets. You may find useful a brief chapter on data manipulation and statistical analysis. The solution of a linear system of equations is one of the common problems arising in most disciplines and is treated in a separate chapter for full matrices, a separate chapter deals with the case of sparse matrices. The book would be incomplete without a coverage of eigenvalues and eigenvectors, and Matlab provides some commands for their computation, although only for two-dimensional matrices -yes, besides sparse matrices you may also create multidimensional matrices, but not all operations for two-dimensional matrices work with multidimensional ones.

Some topics in numerical methods are also covered. You will be able to make interpolation and curve and surface fitting, find zeros and minima of one and multidimensional functions, solve definite integrals and ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with adaptive and efficient methods -some ODE methods for stiff systems are also available.

One of Matlab's strengths is to possibility to program in the same environment for development and prototyping. Some chapters present commands to control the execution of Matlab statements -conditional branching, looping, supporting user interaction, debugging and profiling.

Commands for two- and three- dimensional graphics, from plotting simple functions to complex surfaces, patches and animations (or movies) as well as commands to manipulate graphics are covered: labels and text, change of axes (linear and nonlinear), scaling, graphical input of data, viewpoint and perspective control, color control, multiple plots. The graphics system in Matlab is object oriented and the book also covers low-level commands so that you can control your graphics with precision. You can also make use of the commands presented in this book to produce your own graphical user interface, either by using user interface controls directly or the Graphical User Interface Development Environment (GUIDE), to provide better interactivity to the user.

The book also covers how to extend the functionality of Matlab by adding external functions written in C or FORTRAN.

Appendices present a step-by-step introduction for the novice of Matlab, concise definitions and basic concepts in linear algebra, a quick reference to commands and command tables, a brief introduction to other products (toolboxes from MathWorks Inc. and third party toolboxes) that may complement MATLAB, and a non-annotated list of related books.

I have benefited a lot from this book, that is the reason I always keep it at hand. You will find it useful too.

How did Captain Flint and Murray sack the Spanish galleon and bury their ill-gotten treasure on the Dead Man's Chest and on Treasure Island? This book is a thrilling "prequel" to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic pirate tale!

5 out of 5 stars How the Treasure of "Treasure Island" Came To Be.......2005-12-11

Though the 1934 classic film version of Treasure Island makes reference to a character that appears only in this novel, not in RLS' original (proving that somebody involved in making the film had read it), Porto Bello Gold is almost forgotten today, which is a shame because it is a rousing adventure and a worthy prequel to the classic adventure.

RLS never told us much about the origins of the treasure, the implication being that it was accumulated from many raids over some considerable period of time. It was A. D. Howden Smith's inspiration to have it all come from the taking of a single treasure galleon, carrying the yearly mining production back to Spain, and that the portion hidden on Treasure Island was considerably less than half the total.

Young Robert Ormerod's life just got a lot more complicated. Pirates are attacking just off New York harbor, he's just met a fascinating Irish lassie, Moira O'Donnell, and the great uncle he never knew about, Andrew Murray, a notorious Jacobite and pirate in partnership with Flint, has made him an offer he can't refuse: assist him in his latest scheme willingly or over his father's dead body. Accompanied by his father's friend, Peter Corlaer, a giant of a Dutchman who insists on being taken prisoner as well, an unwilling Robert plays his part in Murray's grand scheme: to take the Porto Bello treasure galleon and use most of the swag to finance another Jacobite conspiracy.

As in Treasure Island the key relationship is between a naive young boy and a Machiavellian old man whose true intentions are difficult to read. Though Murray forcibly uses his grand nephew, he is also trying in his own way to provide him with a glorious future, whether Robert wants it or not. Also present are the younger versions of the RLS characters we know so well: Long John Silver, a Machiavellian not quite the equal of Murray who practices his famous charms on Robert, Billy Bones, Blind Pew, Black Dog, Ben Gunn, etc. In addition we get Smith's vision of Captain Flint (a roaring monster) and even Darby McGraw of "Fetch aft the rum!" fame.

As you might have guessed, Murray's scheme doesn't go quite as he expected. Soon Robert, Peter, and Moira are attempting to stay alive amidst a maelstrom of conflicting conspiracies, and although events are considerably constrained by the plot of Treasure Island, there's still room for plenty of twists and surprises. In fact the ending fairly demands another sequel, a sequel that Roger L. Johnson delivered 77 years later in Dead Man's Chest : The Sequel to Treasure Island.

5 out of 5 stars One fine book from a little remembered but very good author.......2004-07-18

Arthur D. Howden Smith is not well remembered but his books are all fine pieces of writing. I approached Porto Bello Gold with some doubts even so but he handles Stevenson's characters so well and with such flair that I was seduced into loving the book. This is a worthy part of the Treasure Island saga and a wonderful read for anyone who appreciates rousing adventure stories, pirates, and buried treasure.
