This book rocks!.......2000-08-26
I have been living in the Bay area for almost 3 years and have had numerous books, most of which stink in comparison to this one. The vast amount of area that this book covers is great for doing just about anything in or around the Bay Area. I've probably utilized this book for more than 30 different activities (biking, hiking, camping, etc.) and I'd have to say that just about EVERYTHING that I've done was great and went smoothly because of the detail the book provides. The only bad thing I'd have to say is that the layout of the information is a bit confusing, but there are so many good "activities" in it that you get over that part quickly.
The Bible of Northern California Guides.......1998-10-02
If you like the outdoors and spend time in Northern California like I do, this book is indespensible! I use it to find all kinds of cool things to do when I travel. I used it on my last trip and it guided me on fun things to do in and around San Francisco, up through Napa and Sonoma valley, great hikes in less populated regions further North around Mt. Shasta, down to Yosemite, the greatest park in the world, to Sea Kayaking in Monterey Bay and finally down to fun coastal stuff around Big Sur. Needless to say I'm very psyched that author Andrew Rice is researching a book on outdoor adventures in Southern California!

Interesting backstory!.......2007-01-11
I actually liked reading this. It was fun and interesting to see how their lives were before the pilot episode. It was good to see what they were up to and how their relationships were. One of the things I really liked was how the opened each chapter. For Haley it was song lyrics, Lucas of course deep quotes, Peyton it was her blog, and Nathan was his athletic journal. It really gave insight to the characters and their interests. Obviously there was some things that didn't fit in with what happened on the show like the fact that Lucas and Haley go to a party at Nathan's but in the show that hadn't been to one until after Lucas joined the team. Even with that I still liked it. Although I thought it got a little carried away in the part where Brooke's boyfriend hit her in front of everyone at the carnival thing and the whole thing about Skils. Other than that it was a good read.
Great, but not without issues.......2005-01-25
I found this book very good. Unlike most of the WB's books this started before the show which made it much more interesting.
As a die-hard fan i really enjoyed this book. But I did have a few issues as well.
It seemed that the issues happening before the "pilot" were something that should've have been mentioned in the show. I know that this wasnt written before the show, but I nit pick at everything to make sure it fits together, and personally they dont seem to fit.
An example is episode 103 "Crash Into You" that was centered around Lucas' first glimpse into Nathan's world, but in the book he and Haleyy go to one of his parties and they get in a fight.
There were also a few ediing errors such as saying "Nathan said" in a conversation between LUcas and Haley when Lucas said it.
All those aside, this was still an excellent book and i would recammend it to any fan.
This is AWFUL.......2005-01-20
I usually enjoy reading books that are adapted from a television show becuase I could get inside their head but this was awful. I read maybe that first two pages and put it down. I felt like I was reading a fifth grader's story. This was the worst $6 I've ever spent. If you want to understand One Tree Hill you'd best by the DVD because you are just going to get a headache from this pre-teen, dare I say, novel.
Book Description
The essays in this collection examine developments in three fundamental biological disciplines--embryology, evolutionary biology, and genetics--in conflict with each other for much of the twentieth century. They consider key methodological problems and the difficulty of overcoming them. Richard Burian interweaves historical appreciation of the settings within which scientists work, substantial knowledge of the biological problems at stake and the methodological and philosophical issues faced in integrating biological knowledge drawn from disparate sources.

Collected for the first time in a single volume are essays which examine the developments in three fundamental biological disciplines - embryology, evolutionary biology, and genetics. These disciplines were in conflict for much of the twentieth century and the essays in this collection examine key methodological problems within these disciplines and the difficulties faced in overcoming the conflicts between them. Burian skilfully weaves together historical appreciation of the settings within which scientists work, substantial knowledge of the biological problems at stake and the methodological and philosophical issues faced in integrating biological knowledge drawn from disparate sources. The final chapter describes what recent findings in development biology and genetics can tell us about the history and development of animals. Written in a clear, accessible style this collection should appeal to students and professionals in philosophy of science, and the philosophy and history of biology.

Level Set Methods and Fast Marching Methods: Evolving Interfaces in Computational Geometry, Fluid Mechanics, Computer Vision, and Materials Science (Cambridge ... on Applied and Computational Mathematics)
ASIN: 3764324309 |
Book Description
This book presents a self-contained introduction to the analytic foundation of a level set approach for various surface evolution equations including curvature flow equations. These equations are important in many applications, such as material sciences, image processing and differential geometry. The goal is to introduce a generalized notion of solutions allowing singularities, and to solve the initial-value problem globally-in-time in a generalized sense. Various equivalent definitions of solutions are studied. Several new results on equivalence are also presented. Moreover, structures of level set equations are studied in detail. Further, a rather complete introduction to the theory of viscosity solutions is contained, which is a key tool for the level set approach.
Although most of the results in this book are more or less known, they are scattered in several references, sometimes without proofs. This book presents these results in a synthetic way with full proofs.
The intended audience are graduate students and researchers in various disciplines who would like to know the applicability and detail of the theory as well as its flavour. No familiarity with differential geometry or the theory of viscosity solutions is required. Only prerequisites are calculus, linear algebra and some basic knowledge about semicontinuous functions.
Book Description
The expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 gave rise to a series of rich, diverse diasporas that were interconnected through a common vision and joie de vivre. The exodus took these Sephardim to other European countries; to North Africa, Asia Minor, and South America; and, eventually, to the American colonies. In each community new literary and artistic forms grew out of the melding of their Judeo-Spanish legacy with the cultures of their host countries, and that process has continued to the present day. This multilingual tradition brought with it both opportunities and challenges that will resonate within any contemporary culture: the status of minorities within the larger society; the tension between a civil, democratic tradition and the anti-Semitism ready to undermine it; and the opposing forces of religion and secularism.
Ilan Stavans has been described by The Washington Post as “Latin America’s liveliest and boldest critic and most innovative cultural enthusiast.” And the Forward calls him “a maverick intellectual whose canonical work has already produced a whole array of marvels that are redefining Jewishness.” This new anthology contains fiction, memoirs, essays, and poetry from twenty-eight writers who span more than 150 years. Included are Emma Lazarus’s legendary poem “The New Colossus,” inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty; the hypnotizing prose of Greece-born, Switzerland-based Albert Cohen; Nobel—Prize winner Elias Canetti’s ruminations on Europe before World War II; Albert Memmi’s identity quest as an Arab Jew in France; Primo Levi’s testimony on the Holocaust; and A. B. Yehoshua’s epic stories set in Israel today.
When read together, these explorations offer an astonishingly incisive collective portrait of the “other Jews,” Sephardim who long for la España perdida, their lost ancestral home, even as they create a vibrant, multifaceted literary tradition in exile.

Customer Reviews:
PIONEERING WORK.......2000-08-13
When first published thirty years ago this was one of the few if not only books devoted to profiling the lives and achievements of Black scientists. All of those fourteen profiled individuals were either unknown or had been put in the halls of obscurity. Louis Haber changed all of that by showing young people that Blacks have contributed much in the scientific field. The stories are remarkable as you see how these men overcame racial, educational and economic obstacles to produce discoveries which have impacted upon our lives.
The information about these pioneers are just as significant today as they were thirty years ago. Black Pioneers is a classic work in its field but needs revision even though the author has died. More information concerning the scientists is available that can be included in this work. Conspiculously absent is the contributions of Black women scientists. They too need to be included in the text as well as an updated bibliography. Other than those changes this book is an excellent introductory tome for young and old people who are curious about the contributions of Blacks in science.
Information that is not well known, but is important to ALL!.......1998-07-26
I was extremely pleased to find this book. Young African Americans need to know that they, too, have as rich a contribution in the development of the history of the United States as other Americans. This information is not found in history books. Without books like this, no one would know the extensive contributions that African Americans have made to the development of our nation. I had a conversation with one of my son's friend's mother, and she was completely unbelieving of the information I shared. Everyone SHOULD have access to books of this kind, because without them, how would we know? There is so much information that has been omitted from the history books on the United States, especially where African Americans are concerned. African Americans have had overwhelming involvement in the history of this country since its beginning, i.e., slavery. Who created the cotton gin? A slave tired of picking cotton. Who invented the first traffic light, the iron ! board, the signals in a car? Who recreated the blue prints for the development of what became Washington, DC? Who found over 250 uses from the peanut? Who was the first pioneer of blood plasma? Who performed the first success heart transplant? All these individuals were African Americans, and that is just naming a few. However, many Americans don't know these facts. I think this book should be in every public library, as well as all elementary and middle school libraries across the country. I am so very proud to be an African American, and when young African Americans read this, I know this book will give them the aspiration to know that they, too, can aspire to greatness! I LOVE THIS BOOK! I hope to find others like it. Thank you, Mr. Haber, for caring and making this information accessible to the general public.

"Banality of Evil" Personified.......2003-06-06
I've read Voices from the Bunker three times and will no doubt read it again. It is one of the most fascinating books I have read about Hitler. The book is made up of first hand accounts by three members of Hitler's inner circle: secretary Traudl Junge, aides-de-camp Otto Guensche, and pilot Hans Baur. About 95% of the account comes from Junge who was hired as one of Hitler's private secretaries in January 1943 (just in time for the tenth anniversary of Hitler's coming to power and less than two and one half years before the end of the Nazi regime). During much of this time, Junge's duties were primarily social. She accompanied Hitler for meals and relaxation almost daily. Her viewpoint is, admittedly, from an isolated world with one set of beliefs and a "puppet master" who controlled her day-to-day life and thoughts. She describes Hitler's demeanor and routine at the Wolf's Lair (Hitler's headquarters in East Prussia), at the Berghof (his mountain retreat), and finally in the bunker as Berlin was being surrounded. She offers a unique perspective on many aspects of the dictator's life: his dietary habits, his outlook on the war, his after-dinner small talk with such intimates as Eva Braun, etc. Junge also describes how Hitler was affected by the July 1944 bomb plot and how he handled himself as he neared his suicide. Finally, Junge, Guensche, and Baur each offer their experiences trying to escape war-torn Berlin. Many top Nazis are included in Junge's account: Goebbels, Himmler, Albert Speer, etc. Hitler comes out looking very human in this book as Junge's perspective is from one in an isolated world where Hitler was the charming host who played with his dog and cared about his loyal friends and employees. As the authors state in the introduction: "It is generally agreed today that the most shattering feature of those who commit genocide is not that they are monsters, but that they are just like many other people." My only complaint is that the book leaves me wanting more. It is only 166 pages with many short chapters and two sections of black and white photos. Junge died fairly recently at the age of 81 and I've read that she completed a book The Final Hour before her death. I have yet to find this book but, if it is an expanded version of Voices in the Bunker, it will be excellent.
light reading, but an exceptionally unique author........1999-05-12
From the former secretary of the fuhrer comes a unique story which is easily believable because of the author herself. I've seen many interviews of Ms. Junge and have concluded that she is of high moral standard and has led a truly unique life because of the "Nazi nerve-center" she was a part of. Voices from the bunker illustrates the last few weeks of Hitler's life, aswell as the escape(s) of the surviving bunker dwellers. Because of her daily proximity to Hitler and the goings-on of the Fuhrer-bunker, the author offers a uniquely special rendition of the final days of Naziism. Covered in this book are the author's appointment to Hitler's staff, the activities of the "center of power" within the reich, circumstances leading to the eventuall downfall, Hitler's death and the escape from the bunker amidst Russian bombardment. This book is a light read, but filled with capturing discriptions of the last few weeks of the underground bunker which served as the command center of Adolf Hitler.
Book Description
It is common knowledge that televised political ads are meant to appeal to voters' emotions, yet little is known about how or if these tactics actually work. Ted Brader's innovative book is the first scientific study to examine the effects that these emotional appeals in political advertising have on voter decision-making.
At the heart of this book are ingenious experiments, conducted by Brader during an election, with truly eye-opening results that upset conventional wisdom. They show, for example, that simply changing the music or imagery of ads while retaining the same text provokes completely different responses. He reveals that politically informed citizens are more easily manipulated by emotional appeals than less-involved citizens and that positive "enthusiasm ads" are in fact more polarizing than negative "fear ads." Black-and-white video images are ten times more likely to signal an appeal to fear or anger than one of enthusiasm or pride, and the emotional appeal triumphs over the logical appeal in nearly three-quarters of all political ads.
Brader backs up these surprising findings with an unprecedented survey of emotional appeals in contemporary political campaigns. Politicians do set out to campaign for the hearts and minds of voters, and, for better or for worse, it is primarily through hearts that minds are won. Campaigning for Hearts and Minds will be indispensable for anyone wishing to understand how American politics is influenced by advertising today.
Customer Reviews:
Telling exploration of emotion and political campaigns.......2007-08-18
This is an excellent book. The general audience may find the statistical discussion somewhat slow going, but this is not a turgidly written academic tome. At the same time, it is a solid academic work. His takeoff point (page 2): ". . .the motivational and persuasive power of campaign advertising depends considerably on whether an ad appeals to fear or enthusiasm." He contends that emotional appeals built into campaign ads makes them more effective--the mixture of a political message plus emotion can be powerful if crafted well.
His experiments make it clear that mixing emotions (whether enthusiasm or fear) with a political message has impacts--whether those effects be simple reactions to ads or stimulating interest in the campaign or motivating viewers to want to get out and vote on election day.
This is all, according to the author, counter to much standard political science research that, in the near past, argued that media had only "minimal effects." Brader's work, and that of others, surely suggests that this judgment is much overstated. Media can, indeed, have measurable political effects. This book is one addition to that important correction of the old standard wisdom in the study of politics.
The book is also worth looking at because of its notice of the relevance of psychology and the neurosciences for understanding why emotional elements in political ads can have such an effect. This demonstrates powerfully the importance of cross-disciplinary research.
Final judgment? For those interested in the effects of emotion on politics, this is yet another nice addition to the library.
Interesting book.......2007-08-06
Although it has to do mainly with the US political reality, there are interesting views useful for those from other countries.
It could be a little thinner if the author didn't reiterate some points more than twice, but it's an interesting and fun read.
Academic insights meet practical application.......2006-02-27
Ted Brader's "Campaigning for Hearts and Minds: How Emotional Appeals in Political Ads Work" drives yet another nail into the coffin of academic wisdom that voters are either rational decision-makers or complacent habit-following creatures by providing compelling evidence for the role of emotions in political campaigns. Building off of George Marcus, Russell Neuman and Michael MacKuens' model of "Affective Intelligence", Ted Brader applies the rarely employed experimental method to "everyday people" during a Massachusetts gubernatorial campaign to explicate the process and outcome of their viewing televised political advertisements of differing emotional content and tone. Brader then carries out a content analysis of 1,565 political advertisements from the 2004 election to provide insights as to how the emotions of enthusiasm and fear are used to influence potential voters. His often counter-intuitive experimental findings on how subtle visual and audio cues affect voters' emotions, especially those of informed and interested voters, makes this book required reading for those interested in the "real world" of politics and campaigning. His content analysis findings reinforce his experimental findings by illustrating how political advertisements are used in political campaigns across the United States. In sum, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in learning how emotions influence politics by substantially advancing our understanding of how emotions drive our political thoughts, decisions, and actions.

Product Description
"Econation: America in Environmental Perspective" is author and landscape architect John C. Kriegs second call to arms for environmental awareness and protection. As with his debut work, "Environmental Cognizance" (April, 2005), this second work in a planned trilogy espouses an urgent and immediate need for action to enact change in the way humansspecifically, Americans treat the land, water and atmosphere that we all share. Organized chronologically, the book takes the reader on a chapter-by-chapter course in American environmental history. Chapter one begins with the state of the environment long before European settlers ever knew North America existed. Subsequent chapters illustrate the dramatic (often destructive) effects that settlers and the American government caused throughout the years for the North American environment and its native inhabitantsboth human and animal. Anchoring the work is an ever-optimisticyet vital and insistenthope that other Americans will unite in one strong patriotic voice to set an environmental example for other nations around the world.
