              Book Description

"This funny and poignant novel celebrates the power of writing to help young people make sense of their lives and unlock and confront their problems." - SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL (starred review)

When MVP Kevin Boland gets the news that he has mono and won't be seeing a baseball field for a while, he suddenly finds himself scrawling a poem down the middle of a page in his journal. To get some help, he cops a poetry book from his dad's den - and before Kevin knows it, he's writing in verse about stuff like, Will his jock friends give up on him? What's the deal with girlfriends? Surprisingly enough, after his health improves, he keeps on writing, about the smart-talking Latina girl who thinks poets are cool, and even about his mother, whose death is a still-tender loss. Written in free verse with examples of several poetic forms slipped into the mix, including a sonnet, haiku, pastoral, and even a pantoum, this funny, poignant story by a master of dialogue is an English teacher's dream - sure to hook poetry lovers, baseball fanatics, mono recoverers, and everyone in between.

4 out of 5 stars shakespeare bats cleanup.......2006-10-12

I liked this book because it is short sweet and funny and it was a quick read. I think it was for 7th and 8th graders because they talk about going to the bamboo field and they make out and stuff, and
that's the only reason that it would be not good for all ages.
When I started reading this I thought that it was going to be about something else, but I was not sure what it was going to be about. I would recommend this for people who like chick-flick book and they talk about the boy having girlfriends a lot and that's why I like this book, but it talks about baseball a little, too.
Like when the boy gets mono at the beginning he gets mono and has to stay home from school and likes to write poems when he is home.
That's why I recommend this book to people.

              4 out of 5 stars Book Review.......2006-09-26

This book follows the life of a kid at the age of fourteen. He is diagnosed with Mono and is but in bed for the remainder of the school year. He finds a poetry book in his Fathers collection and starts testing his own skills out. He tries Pastoral, using couplets, a sestina, and blank verse to name a few. Koertge formed his character through different kinds of poetry and I believe does and amazing job. After the first few poems you really start seeing this character come to life. I would recommend this book to any reader.

4 out of 5 stars Shakespeare Bats Cleanup.......2006-03-18

Shakespeare Bats Cleanup is a funny, breezy, cute book. I don't think it relies as much on the themes of baseball, or even poetry, as it does on the theme of young love. Occasionally this theme becomes inappropriate as he writes poems about making out with girls in the bamboo forest and, in a sick metaphor, reaching Home Base.

Nevertheless, Shakespeare Bats Cleanup will cast a sort of spell over you. Well worth a read.

              5 out of 5 stars great text.......2007-03-28

This text is very helpful with its readable language and diagrams. It provides a sufficient review of basic biology and is written so that one could technically skip chapters and still understand the topics. The text's website and CD provide excellent review tests, flashcards, and animations.

However in some sections and chapters, the author has not organized the flow very well, especially the immunity chapters, and the text goes a little too deep for a 1-term microbiology class. Its strengths outway the negatives enough to give it 5 stars.

                    Book Description

The subject of sparse matrices has its roots in such diverse fields as management science, power systems analysis, surveying, circuit theory, and structural analysis. Mathematical models in all these areas give rise to very large systems of linear equations which could not be solved were it not for the fact that the matrices contain relatively few non-zero entries. Only comparatively recently, in the last fifteen years or so, has it become apparent that the equations can be solved even when the pattern is irregular, and it is primarily the solution of such problems that is considered in this book. The subject is intensely practical and this book is written with practicalities ever in mind. Whenever two methods are applicable, their rival merits are considered, and conclusions are based on practical experience where theoretical comparison is not possible. Non-numeric computing techniques have been included, as well as frequent illustrations, in an attempt to bridge the usually wide gap between the printed page and the working computer code. Despite this practical bias, it is recognized that many aspects of the subject are of interest in their own right, and the book aims to be suitable also for a student course, probably at M.Sc. level. Exercises have been included to illustrate and strengthen understanding of the material, as well as to extend it. Efficient use of sparsity is a key to solving large problems in many fields. This book will supply both insight and answers for those attempting to solve these problems.

                    Customer Reviews:

                    5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2004-01-31

This book covers direct sparse matrix techniques developed
up to 1986. It's slightly outdated, since this field
experienced great changes -- especially in the early and
mid 90s a lot of new methods were developed.

However, it's a still a pretty book for beginners who want
to know this field. It's pitty that Amazon does not have it.
The good new is that you can buy the book directly from the publisher at www.us.oup.com/us/ for $55.

5 out of 5 stars This is a nice little start to numerical analysis.......2001-06-07

This is a nice little start to numerical analysis. None of the underlying real variable theory is explored in the detail. Basically, an undergraduate exposure to calculus and linear algebra is all that is required. The basic topics are covered such as integration, numerical differentiation, and interpolation. There are numerous worked out examples and the text is sprinkled with snippets of Fortran code. However, all of the material covered here is contained in Press' "Numerical Recipes in C" .

Boyd's revised edition of Vergil's Aeneid is the essential book to prepare for the "AP Latin: Vergil" exam or just become familiar with this favorite. With all the lines on the AP syllabus and no more, Boyd's Aeneid effectively prepares students to be familiar with all the lines that may appear on the test. Each page has a paragraph of Latin text, with numerous footnotes underneath, offering translation help through grammar and vocabulary hints. A folded pull-out glossary in back serves as quick reference to unfamiliar words. Everything necessary to translate a passage is listed underneath--a convenient way to study the Aeneid and any other Latin text.

The Introduction puts Vergil's masterpiece in context, with background on Vergil's life, the mythology he drew from, and even the elements of Roman religion referenced. The Grammatical Appendix helps students not only to translate, but also to pronounce the dactylic hexameter as it was meant to be sung. Besides accommodating the aural learners, Boyd's Aeneid also has a map illustrating Aeneas' wanderings for the visual learner.

While Clyde Pharr's edition has been the most esteemed textbook, the Pharr text contains ALL of books 1-6 only, meaning that students have to take home a heavier textbook and also purchase a separate text for books 10-12 of the Aeneid. Thus, Boyd's revision of Pharr makes this edition even better, sparing students from searching for the passages that will actually be covered: it contains only what is on the syllabus. It is the best way to study Vergil's classic epic.
