Book Description
ith a steady boyfriend, the position of Student Council President, and a chance to go to an Ivy League college, high school life is just fine for Holland Jaeger. At least it seems to be. But when Cece Goddard comes to school, everything changes. Cece and Holland have undeniable feelings for each other, but how will others react to their developing relationship? This moving love story between two girls is a worthy successor to Nancy Garden's classic young adult coming out novel, Annie on My Mind. With her characteristic humor and breezy style, Peters has captured the compelling emotions of young love.
Customer Reviews:
Great and Very Realistic.......2007-08-19
I first read this book in the 10th grade when I was finally coming to terms with my sexuality. I loved it so much and am glad it was my first lesbian/gay book that I read. It was very realistic and a great read for someone who is just coming out whether or not you are still in high school. I'm now a sophmore in college and I have to say this is still my favorite book to read. It's easy to get attached to the characters in this book and you feel for them and want to know what happens to them after the story ends. Just wonderful, 5 stars!
LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-28
This book was purely one of the best GLBTQ books I've ever read! I definitely give it two thumbs up! I recommend it to anyone who loves Peter's other books or anyone who is thinking about buying it! The storyline is great and the characters are very well-written and believable. This book got me into reading Peter's other books and so far every book I have read of hers, I couldn't put it down! A definite MUST READ.
shameful.......2007-07-23
I wish I could give this even fewer stars. It is despicable that there are authors peddling books to our children that encourage not only premarital sexual behavior, but perverse behavior at that. Shame on Julie Anne Peters.
Lovely book.......2007-03-16
I highly recommend this book for younger readers (age 13-16), especially if they're just coming to terms with their own sexuality, or maybe the sexuality of a friend. It's very well-written, and the characters are interesting and dynamic.
Very good book, but missing something..........2007-02-25
I agree with all the past reviews. The book is well written and it is hard to put down. However, as a 25 year old reader, I felt that there were some important parts that the author left out in order to "keep it safe or even secret." I feel that Peter's should have gone a bit deeper into 1) Holland's sexual experiences with Cecilia. 2) Holland's relationship with her friends Leah and Kirsten. 3) Holland's mother and her past history with men, her parents and homophobia. 4) Leah's and Kirsten's issues with sexuality, societal expectations and lack of fulfillment. 5) Faith's issues: Relationship with her real mom, dressing gothic and shaving off her hair.
Perhaps Peter's intentionally chose to leave out certain things in order to keep your mind wandering in mystery, however it only made me dissapointed and left feeling unsatisfied.
While I am most likely older than the target audience for this book, I still feel that Peter's should have gone a bit deeper.
On the other hand, I did love this book. I read it in less than a week, not because it was short, but because it was hard to put down. I really liked how Peter's put the LGBT center in the book, which proved to be a huge success for Holland and Cecilia.
It was an inspiring book and a great story. I'm just bitter that there was no orgasm-- just the slightest hint of one!
Book Description
Secrets come in all shapes and sizes. And for families as well as individuals, they are built on a complex web of shifting motives and emotions. But today, when personal revelations are posted on the Internet or sensationalized on afternoon talk shows, we risk losing touch with how important secrets are--how they are used and abused, their power to harm and heal.
In this important work, Evan Imber-Black explores the nature of secrets, helping us understand:
The distinction between healthy privacy and toxic secrecy
What to tell--and not to tell--young children
How to safely confront a family "zone of silence"
Why adolescents need to have some secrets--and where to draw the line
The effect of "official" secrets, like sealed adoption records and medical testing
What to consider before revealing an important secret
And much more
Filled with moving first-person stories,
The Secret Life of Families provides perspective on some of today's most sensitive personal and social issues. Giving voice to our deepest fears and to our power to overcome them, this is a book that will be talked about for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
The Secret Life of Families.......2007-02-10
This is an excellent book. Evan Imber-Black masterfully intertwines stories, experiences, and insights, allowing the reader to discover the profound power that secrets can hold. The stigmatization of secrets in our society has urged many people to be open in excess, which can be just as harmful as secrecy. This book helps to bring a sense of balance onto the scene.
Imber-Black leads us through the secret keeping and opening process, drawing from her years of experience as a family therapist. She defines different kinds of secrets, writes about what kinds of secrets should be kept and what kinds of secrets should be opened, how and when they should be opened, and to whom. She explains how society shapes its citizens' views and behaviors surrounding secrecy. Perhaps most importantly, she talks about the ways that secrets can affect the lives of those who are holding the secret and also those who are outside of the secret. Individualism may be a prized virtue in our society, but one cannot help but be affected by family secrets and the stories that they hold.
This book is well written and easy to read. There is relatively no technical jargon and the flow of ideas is easy to follow. There is some slight repetition, and expansion upon detail which lend to the length of the book, but I think these serve to broaden the reader's perspective and strengthen the overall message.
I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who has an interest in understanding life and making steps towards personal growth and healthier relationships.

Nice blend of psychology and sociology.......2007-02-10
I adopted this book for a sociology course that I teach on the family. I had never used this before and found it to be a really intelligent and insightful examination of the role of secrets in family dynamics and relationships in general. Although the book is written by a psychologist, as a sociologist, I deeply appreciated the author's ability to identify social, macro-level factors that play an instrumental role in secret making, secret keeping, and revealing secrets. She is mindful of how gender, social class, ethnicity/race, religion, sexual orientation, and historical events and contexts play a part in secrets. I used the book because much of our presentation of our family is impression management--projecting the most positive image for public view. The reality, however, is that families are imperfect, and we harbor lots of secrets to try to mask our imperfections. This book does a beautiful job of unveiling these dynamics, with appropriate specific examples to illustrate. There is something there for everyone to identify with.
The secret life of families.......2007-02-07
This book is well written, it is unlike other books of its genre because, it is not full of psychological jargon. It also approaches family issues with a great deal for sensitivity for the individual's need. Imber-Black does not take a one size fits all approach to dealing with family secrets. Imber-Black encourages the reader to take time and thing about the events surrounding the secret. I feel that it is this approach that set Imber-Black's book apart for other ideas on how to deal with secrets.
This book is not just for the individual with a history of secrets, it can be helpful to all because, it imparts valuable information on how to deal with all types of family secrets. This book also has a built in series of questions at the end of all the chapters.

Miss Piggy Rules.......2007-06-30
If you love Miss Piggy, you will enjoy this book, for some of her wit, charm and karate-chopping style come through loud and clear, emphasis on loud. While not as insightful or enjoyable as "Miss Piggy's Guide to Life," which seems more consistent with The Diva Herself, this is a very funny read. It won't do you any good to read with an eye for consistency--you simply can't reconcile Piggy's rules with her undying love for Kermit--but if you read with an eye for humour, you won't be disappointed.
Desperate SP Seeks SF. Any SF........2002-03-23
At the used price, I'd say it makes a splendid alternative to a card. Grab one and include it in a basket with some Godiva`s and smelly bubble bath, and TA DAAH!! You've got a fabo gift for one of your close, single girlfriends. She'll love the writing in oh-so-true Miss Piggy voice. I could actually hear her "HI-YA's" a couple of times. Artwork is funky and fun, too.
This is soooooo %$^&* funny!.......1999-02-11
I found a used copy of this book and wish they would put it back in print. It totally debunks that ridiculous book "The Rules". Don't take it too seriously, but read it for its sheer wit and whimsy. I don't think this book is sexist at all--it is supposed to be FUNNY! To everyone that reads it and takes it seriously...LIGHTEN UP! It was supposed to be written by Miss Piggy, for heaven's sake! This is a perfect book to give as a gift to girlfriends and share with boyfriends--most of the guys I know have found this book funny too. Classic.
brilliant.......1998-11-13
This is funny, funny stuff. Acerbic, witty, ironic. Porcine
Deliciously wicked!.......1998-01-15
Miss Piggy thumbs her more-than-generous nose at the so-called "Rules" and provides us with a rippingly good time. Read this book with your tongue firmly planted in your cheek!

Book Description
Martens and Fishers (Martes) in Human-Altered Environments: An International Perspective examines the conditions where humans and martens are compatible and incompatible, and promotes land use practices that allow Martes to be representatively distributed and viable.
All Martes have been documented to use forested habitats and 6 species (excluding the stone marten) are generally considered to require complex mid- to late-successional forests throughout much of their geographic ranges. All species in the genus require complex horizontal and vertical structure to provide escape cover protection from predators, habitat for their prey, access to food resources, and protection from the elements. Martens and the fisher have high metabolic rates, have large spatial requirements, have high surface area to volume ratios for animals that often inhabit high latitudes, and often require among the largest home range areas per unit body weight of any group of mammals. Resulting from these unique life history characteristics, this genus is particularly sensitive to human influences on their habitats, including habitat loss, stand-scale simplification of forest structure via some forms of logging, and landscape-scale effects of habitat fragmentation. Given their strong associations with structural complexity in forests, martens and the fisher are often considered as useful barometers of forest health and have been used as ecological indicators, flagship, and umbrella species in different parts of the world. Thus, efforts to successfully conserve and manage martens and fishers are associated with the ecological fates of other forest dependent species and can greatly influence ecosystem integrity within forests that are increasingly shared among wildlife and humans.
We have made great strides in our fundamental understanding of how animals with these unique life history traits perceive and utilize habitats, respond to habitat change, and how their populations function and perform under different forms of human management and mismanagement. This knowledge enhances our basic understanding of all species of Martes and will help us to achieve the goal of conserving viable populations and representative distributions of the world's Martes, their habitats, and associated ecological communities in our new millennium.

Beautiful.......2004-03-29
I love this book. It has been quite a long time since I've read a book with such depth and realistic characters. The people in this book ARE REAL. I am having trouble putting into words how much I loved this book. It made me laugh and cry, and I was very depressed when I had finished it. If you like Dickens, I think you will enjoy this author's style.
The mini-series is now out on DVD. I will be getting it soon, and it is hard for me to think about much else. I can't wait to see it; eleven hours! Excellent.

This is one of my favorite books, too. You may purchase a copy of the DVD from "Deep Discount DVD" which has a web page

no shipping charges. I just finished viewing all 4 disks (rented from Netflix) .. good luck
I lost an old friend.......2004-02-04
Now that I've finished "To Serve Them All My Days" I feel that I've lost an old friend. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, savoring it and rationing my reading so as not to finish it too quickly. A must read for those interested in teaching, education in general, and in understanding children. This story is a study in the trials and tribulations life offers us, and how one person not only overcame these setbacks but also flourished in spite of them. Although I watched and enjoyed the Masterpiece Theatre series on TV in the early 80's I did not really appreciate it then, as I would now if it were to be rebroadcast. I have exhausted all possibilities in trying to obtain a copy of a WGBH tape of this series. If anyone knows how to obtain a tape please let me know. I highly recommend this book.

A Man Battered in Spirit Finds the Way Back to His Best Self.......2003-08-08
I ran across this book by chance in a hospital lending library, and it was just the thing to read during a tedious recouperation. This is an enobling book, it reminded me of how people can rise to wonderful levels of caring and integrity, it showed a person wounded in body and spirit who found that concentrating on the details of teaching the schoolboys under his care was, in a sense, a healing meditation. I am slightly sceptical that anyone can be that free of ignoble impulses; it seemed that none of the characters in the book did anything at odds with their personality or with a base motive. However, I don't care: I'd RATHER that people's best selves were always visible. And I'd like to believe that the everyday world can be a healing place, and that I too can go forward with courage, confident that I would be able to show the truest part of my personality. -- In addition, I appreciated the book's description of the changing political mood in England during the two world wars.
