    Book Description

In concise, readable prose, "From Grassland to Glacier" guides the nature lover through the natural world of the Southern Rocky Mountains—from the hot, dry plains and plateaus, through the moist forests of pine and spruce, to the windswept tundra above the trees. Self-guided tours and easy-to-use keys simplify the identification of natural communities through personal experience. The standard work in the field for years, "From Grassland to Glacier" has been completely revised to take advantage of scientific advances. It includes an entirely new section on the wetlands ecosystem and has been expanded to include portions of the Southern Rockies in the surrounding states of Utah, New Mexico, and Wyoming.

        4 out of 5 stars Neotropical Trees.......2000-12-20

The Trees of Peninsula Osa identification book is well done. It contains a four part description for the tree being described. Tree characteristics (height, bark color, etc.), leaf type (simple, compound),flower discription, fruit description. It goes in alfabetical order by family and also contains ecological notes at the end of each description. One of my favorite features is that this book comes with pictures and close ups of diagnostic characteristics. At the end of the book it has a helpful glossary followed by Family description of diagnostic characteristics. The one drawback is that this book does not have a dichtomous key which makes it hard to identify trees in the field.

                            4 out of 5 stars A Brother's Perspective.......2004-04-17

Sons From Afar, by Cynthia Voigt was another huge success. In this particular book, the main characters are James & Sammy. James was the kind of person who wished to find out about his lost father because of his feelings in high school on how "being a dork isn't going to get you anywhere." He believes that since all the boys his age had fathers, they were all taught how to catch a ball ever since they were little. Although James had good grades, he wants to find a sport he could play well on. For Sammy, he's like the opposite of James. He's very active: participating in tennis and always being full of energy. When Sammy learned that James wanted to find their father, he didn't hesitate. He even entered a bar that says "no kids allowed" just to find his father! This was how Cynthia Voigt made this book interesting: describing the differences and problems of two brothers that can also happen in our every day lives. On every single page, there is excitement and adventure to make the reader satisfied on what he or she is reading. I have enjoyed this book, and this book will be an excellent choice for people who want to read about young adult fiction.

                            4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2002-04-27

I thought thatthis book was really good. It really held my attention and was a quick read. It wasn't as good as Homecoming and Dicey's Song were, but it was still really good nd definatly worth reading. It's about Sammy and James going to find their father. I have to say, the plot is a little strange but the book itsself is still really really good. It's one of my favorites.

                            4 out of 5 stars Brotherhood.......2002-04-16

In another of the Tillerman series, Cynthia Voight explores the relationship between James and Sammy as each attempts to discover his inner self and who he wants to be. As the brothers search for a long missing father they grow to understand and admire each other. Although the plot bogs down in detail at times, there is enough action to keep the reader turning pages through to the finish. Not as captivating as the first two books in the series.

3 out of 5 stars The book didn't keep me all that interested........2001-12-17

I personally didn't think that the book was all that interesting because it it gave the story away and I could predict what was going to happen. This book is about two brothers who have questions about their father. They go on this search to find the truth about who he is, and why he left them. I like the part when Sammy was giving his report for the class on Greek mythology and he told a story about how the sun God, Apollo, let his son drive the chariot with the sun across the sky. The story was iteresting to me. I liked Sammy because he wasn't afraid of anything or anyone. I didn't like the amount of detail that the author gave, it was too elaborate. "Seek and ye shall find." That meant a great deal to me because it told me that you can meet certain goals if you try hard enough. This book is different from others because it is more of a real life situation for teenagers. I would recommend this book to people that are interested in thorough detail. I want to know why James was so interested in their father even though he never met and knew him.

5 out of 5 stars This book is Awesome!.......2000-04-30

I just finished reading this book and I have read all the books before it, this is just as good as the rest. Most books don't keep my interest but these did. The Tillermans never give up they go after what they want and don't care what others say. I reccomend this book for any one, but I do think it would be helpful to read Homecoming, Dicey's Song, and A Solitary Blue before this one.

This book recounts Harry & Bertha Holt's struggle to save Korean War orphans and unite them with adoptive families. This is a story of ordinary people with extraordinary faith. The Holts believed that God's will was for every child to have a family of his own. Their work became the first major organized effort to place homeless foreign children with adoptive families in the United States. This was a family effort and it cost them their wealth and their quiet life. They were beset with politicial oppositon, an intransigent bureaucracy and the primitive conditions of a country devastated by war. But the result of their work stands as a monument to God's care for orphans. The Holt's work has placed over 50,000 children with adoptive familites. And today Holt International Children's Services continues to care for homeless children in developing nations and to give them families through adoption.

                                          Book Description

Hormones, Brain, and Behavior is a comprehensive work discussing the effect of hormones on the brain and, subsequently, behavior. This five-volume major reference work has 106 chapters covering a broad range of topics with an extensive discussion of the effects of hormones on insects, fish, amphibians, birds, rodents, and humans.

To truly understand all aspects of our behavior, we must take every influence (including the hormonal influences) into consideration. Donald Pfaff and a number of well-qualified editors examine and discuss how we are influenced by hormonal factors, offering insight, and information on the lives of a variety of species.

Hormones, Brain, and Behavior offers the reader comprehensive coverage of an emerging and prominent field with a state-of-the-art overview of hormonally-mediated behaviors. The set provides unique treatment of all major vertebrate and invertebrate model systems with excellent opportunities for relating behavior to molecular genetics. The topics cover an unusual breadth (from molecules to ecophysiology), ranging from basic science to clinical research, making this reference of interest to a broad range of scientists in a variety of fields.

One of the most popular artists of the 20th century, M. C. Escher, leaves a rich legacy. The centennial celebration of his birth, held in Rome and Ravello in 1998, gave testimony to the keen interest and new insight into his work, and showcased a number of contemporary artists and scientists whose work is directly inspired by that of Escher.
This book contains 40 of their articles, richly illustrated with original art works in addition to well-known and little-known works by Escher. A CD-ROM complements the articles, containing color illustrations of work by contemporary artists, movies, animations, and other demonstrations.

A Kaliedocycle is a three-dimensional ring made from a chain of solid figures enclosed or bonded by four triangles. These kaleidocycles are adaptations of Escher's two-dimensional images of fish, angels, flowers, people, etc., transformed into uniform, interlocking, three-dimensional objects whose patters wrap endlessly. Kaleidocycles contains a 48-page book with over 80 reproductions and diagrams, assembly instructions, and a fascinating discussion of the geometric principles and artistic challenges underlying Escher's designs and their transformation to three-dimensional models; and seventeen die-cut, scored, three-dimensional models (11 kaleidocycles and 6 geometric solids) Cigar box-style packaging, size: 9 1/2 x 12 1/4 x 1 1/2".

My 9-year-old son and I had tremendous fun assembling the models in this kit. Each of the models in the kit contains an adaptation of Escher's periodic design in a way that the geometric solid is continously covered with it. Though a unique personal experience, my son learned what tetrahedron, octahedron, dodecahedron, cuboctahedron and kaleidocycle look like. This is the best project we ever worked on.

If you are as fascinated with the graphics of Escher as I am; you'll be entertained, amazed and engrossed with this 'kit' which allows you to assemble and hold these wonderful models of intrigueing mathematics , coupled with the graphic art and figures of the master himself; M.C.Escher.
It is one thing to look at Escher's magnificient work in 2-dimension; but it is another experience entirely, to hold these 3-dimensional models and view the figures and patterns as you turn as fold these models on themselves,
One of the other reviewers talked about creating additional models; and that is obviously possible ,because there is all the information needed to do that; right here in the book.
I have had this kit for some time ; but hadn't actually constructed any of the models. I recently was told about a man who constructed ball and stick models. I contacted him,and visited him to see his models. I brought along with me a book ,
"Polyhedron Models" by Magnus Wenninger .This is an outstanding book covering the subject as well as 119 models. The man I was visiting ,had the book and even knew its author. This book deals with models whose surfaces are flat and made of cardboard or if desired ,other materials. To see what these fascinating models look like, look them up on the net under "Magnus Wenninger".
The man I visited constructs similar models;but uses only wooden balls and sticks. Think of those chemistry models of compounds, and you can imagine how beautiful and interesting they can be. All models begin with one of the known uniform polyhedra and from them the stellated models are formed. The variations are in the many millions.
Anyone who has much interest in this sort of stuff will find an excellent chapter ,Polyhedra,in "Mathematical Recreations and Essays" by W.W. Rouse Ball,a real classic in the subject of Mathematical Recreations.
The man I went to visit has been working on these models for many, many years. He has created his own techniques and even an intrigueing appratus to make the holes in the balls. The exactness is so critical, that making them by hand would be terribly difficult. To date he has made about 500 0f these ball and stick models.
So, after my visit,it was a real joy to cit down and construct some models.

"A kaleidocycle is a closed chain of tetrahedra that can cycle endlessly through a center hole. ? Best known for his strangely realistic depictions of things that defy the laws of physics, Maurits Cornelis Escher became interested in problems of repetition and symmetry after traveling to the Alhambra, a 14th century Moorish castle in Granada, Spain. Fascinated by the periodic (i.e. regularly recurrent) designs of the castle's mosaics, he began to pursue the idea that a plane can be divided into uniform, interlocking figures, forming a pattern that repeats itself at set intervals, theoretically to infinity. Instead of simply combining abstract shapes to produce a pattern, however, Escher decided to use more meaningful figures--shells and starfish, angels and devils, for example--images that could be connected not just graphically but also conceptually. Kaleidocycles, created by mathematician Doris Schattschneider and graphic designer Wallace Walker, explores the three-dimensional implications of Escher's two-dimensional periodic designs. With a little glue, you can easily assemble the enclosed models--all printed with repeating patterns derived from the artist's original drawings--into various kaleidocycles and geometric solids. In doing so, you will transform Escher's beautiful designs into true examples of infinite repetition: the interlocking images will wrap endlessly over the surfaces of the three-dimensional objects. ? Kaleidocycles contains a 48-page book with over 80 reproductions and diagrams, assembly instructions, and a fascinating discussion of the geometric principles and artistic challenges underlying Escher's designs and their transformation to three-dimensional models; and seventeen die-cut, scored, three-dimensional models (11 kaleidocycles and 6 geometric solids) Cigar box-style packaging, size: 9-1/2 x 12-1/4 x 1-1/2". Inspired by their heroes Xavier Cugat and Desi Arnaz, brothers Cesar and Nestor Castillo come to New York City from Cuba in 1949 with designs on becoming mambo stars. Eventually they do--performing with Arnaz on "I Love Lucy" in 1955 and recording 78s with their own band, the Mambo Kings. In his second novel, Hijuelos traces the lives of the flashy, guitar-strumming Cesar and the timid, lovelorn Nestor as they cruise the East Coast club circuit in a flamingo-pink bus. Enriching the story are the brothers' friends and family members--all driven by their own private dreams. The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love won a Pulitzer Prize in 1990.

It's 1949, the era of the mambo, and two young Cuban musicians make their way from Havana to New York. The Castillo brothers, workers by day, become, by night, stars of the dance halls, where their orchestra plays the sensuous, pulsing music that earns them the title of the Mambo Kings. This is a golden time that thirty years later will be remembered with deep affection. In The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, Oscar Hijuelos has created an enthralling novel about passion and loss, memory and desire.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

I found this book pretty boring and too focused on the main character's sexual escapades. Very disappointing with very little depth to it. Perhaps had the book focused more on the other brother's woes, it would have had the potential to be a great read. I'm wondering if the book won so many awards because it is a Cuban story written in English for an English speaking audience.

The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love, lyrical in its depiction of Cuban-immigrant life in New York City, is a very interesting read. The main thing that separates this book from others (and that probably won it the Pulitzer Prize) was the fact that the story was so rich and original. No other author, in terms of contemporary literature, that I'm aware of has so successfully depicted the lives of Hispanic-Americans in the United States.

The book delves into many facets of life (Latin American life, and life in general) including love, loss, and age. Granted, the book did have its fair share of flaws. For example, the sex scenes were a bit much, often bordering on obscene, and the length made for a somewhat staggering and repetitive read. However, the book, overall, was entertaining enough and entirely worthy of the Pulitzer Prize. If you have nothing to do and want to read an interesting story, go pick up the Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love. Do not, however, go to the ends of the Earth to find this book because you may get disappointed.

"Like a forlorn bird in a bolero, he felt his wings being singed by the flame of tender love" (pg. 88).

If that sentence leaves you hungering for more, by all means pick up this book.

Sensual, sensuous, sensitive--Hijuelos's elegy to Cuba, its people, and especially its music is charming, wicked, uneven, humorous and ultimately sad, much like the 78 RPM recordings the fictional Mambo Kings made in their heyday.

The novel opens with the apex of the band's career: an ephemeral appearance on "I Love Lucy" with the Caribbean demigod Desi Arnaz. This opening scene and the epilogue, both featuring Arnaz in fictional mode, are told through the eyes of Eugenio, the son of one of the two brothers who led the Mambo Kings. The novel is, above all, an attempt to understand the previous generation, and the bulk of the book is a wistful look at the world of rumba and mambo and booze and women and more booze and more women as recalled through the eyes of Cesar Castillo, who came to New York in 1949 with his brother Nestor and, at the time the narrative takes place, three decades later, is drinking himself into a lethal stupor in a dilapidated hotel.

During their glory days in the 1950s Cesar only rarely looked back to his youth in Cuba, but Nestor was in obsessive mourning over the loss of his first love (more imaginary than real), a deprivation that caused him to write nearly two dozen versions of "Beautiful Maria of My Soul," the song the duo eventually performed with Arnaz before a national television audience. They are sudden celebrities in their Harlem neighborhood, but their joy is short-lived. It's not giving anything away to reveal that the neurotically melancholy Nestor dies tragically and young, destroying the magic of the Mambo Kings and leaving Cesar to pick up the pieces of his once-exuberant life. He seeks relief in the arms of women--many, many women--and his sexual prowess seems to be the only consolation left to him as he flits from job to job, as a building superintendent, as a night-club owner, as a music teacher.

Hijuelos frequently and almost seamlessly alters the tone of the prose. When recounting the brothers' careers, his style almost echoes the narration for a VH1 documentary, replete with discographies and studio lore. This tone contrasts sharply with the eroticism and occasional violence of Cesar's sexual exploits and the nostalgic romanticism that pervades the portraits of the brothers and their families. I wouldn't have thought such a juxtaposition of the journalese and the literary could have worked, but Hijuelos somehow pulls it off, making me wonder just how much of these lives are really fiction.

If the book has a failing--and it does sometimes falter--it's that Hijuelos consistently favors hypnotic repetition and overwritten description when a sparser, more straightforward style would have better served his characters. But such lapses are hardly the rule. Yes, it's depressing and, yes, it's coarse, but "Mambo Kings" ultimately celebrates Nestor and Cesar and their long lost loves and lives.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting Read, with Flaws.......2006-09-19

While I enjoyed the writing and the story, and appreciated the atmosphere invoked both for the 1950s and the present day, there were two major flaws that hindered my total enjoyment of the book. Firstly, while I am far from a prude, I found that the constant, graphic explanations of sex and body parts borderd on the pornographic. The man had many lovers--I get it. I don't need to read gory descriptions for 500 pages. That brings up the other flaw--the book could have been cut by 100 pages. Those last pages told us nothing new, and were basically a rehash of Cesar's musings and rememberances. This made the book very draggy, and really diluted the emotional power for me.

I found this book very moving and touching. It is a novel about two Cuban musicians who move to the United States in 1948 and begin a moderately successful music career. The highlight of their career is an appearance on the I Love Lucy show and the experience is mentioned throughout the novel. The lives of the men are lonely and sad. They love many women, marry a few, yet seem detached from those around them. When life is hard, you can always depend on remembering your apperence on the I Love Lucy show. This novel makes the episode even more meaningful.
