A nice addition to any snake library - I enjoyed reading this and hope it raises the popularity of this underated group. Basically, it contains everything you need to keep, raise and breed these species and contains instructions on how to prepare food to prevent thiamin deficiency. If you keep water and garter snakes - buy it!

Best East Africa Travel Guide.......1999-12-13
I am planning a trip to Africa and have scoured many bookstores and shelves for THE BOOK. Footprints provides a wonderful book for those who really want to know EVERYTHING in preparation for their trip--from tipping guides to safari ratings to hotel guides to crime and embassy information--ad infinitim. This book is wealth of practical information and provides maps, history, culture and language information and even has a built in glossy color wildlife section on the flora and fauna one will encounter whilst in East Africa. Having a comprehensive guide in a small package (~6x4 in) is essential since travellers are limited to backage weight restrictions. (Books taken are thusly limited). This book will provides excellent reading material (as well as a travel resource) for all things East African before, during and after travel. Restaurants and hotels are rated by $ and quality, as are safari companies. Each page is double columned in small print, absolutely LOADED with essential information. The version offered for 1999 has a hardbinding, which is a plus. Unfortuantely, all post-1999 Footprint editions are now softcover. If you can take only one book, this is it. This one will be one of two books in my bag. The other one will be Hemingway's 'Green Hills of Africa.'

There are only five of them left now. Ellie and her four friends, Lee, Homer, Kevin, and Fi, have reluctantly returned to New Zealand from Australia to lead more guerrilla attacks on the enemy (who invaded their country in the previous book, Tomorrow, When the War Began). The group has staged raids on their captive hometown Wirrawee from the wilderness sanctuary they call Hell, blowing up and burning enemy headquarters and bridges and supply depots, and killing with their bare hands when they must. By the end of the two sequels, The Dead of Night and A Killing Frost, they are strong and resourceful, but tired and soul-sick with the pervasive violence. Two of them have been killed, and one has killed himself in despair. When they were rescued and airlifted to New Zealand, they thought the nightmare was over. But now they have been sent back to Wirrawee to guide a party of adult raiders on a planned sabotage of a strategic airfield. Something goes wrong; the adults never come back from the raid, and Ellie and her friends are again left on their own to do what they can--and must--to survive.
Like John Marsden's other books, this story is immersed in darkness and dread. It's packed with almost unbearable suspense and breathtaking action, as the personalities and relationships of these decent country kids are eroded by the imperative for violence. Marsden fans will elbow each other aside for a copy of this one, and will look forward to the three new installments on the way. (Ages 12 and older) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Five months into World War III, Ellie and her four remaining friends have barely escaped the Australian town of Wirrawee with their lives and their sanity intact. But as the next step becomes clear, they realize they must once again sacrifice their hard-won comfort and safety. A group of soldiers has recruited the kids to guide the way to the Wirrawee air base. What could possibly motivate Ellie and her friends to return? This risky sabotage mission may be their only hope of rescuing their families, too.

Devoured It!.......2005-10-19
Huh? I don't understand some of the negative reviews. I've been reading this series in order and I think this book is as good as the rest. I would have read it in one sitting if I didn't have to get up to go to work the next day. I'm not a fast reader either, but I finished it in record time. There's plenty of action and lots of tension, so you won't be bored. I can't wait to get my hands on the next book in this series.
If you DON'T like Sad Endings--DON'T READ THIS!!!.......2004-08-01
This book is OKAY, I mean, Book I and Book II are the BEST books in the Tomorrow Series.
Anyway, I thought this book was rather boring and it didn't have as near as much good stuff in it that the first three had. When, I finished this book, I was greatly dissapointed because I HATE books with sad endings. It just tears my heart away.
This is the last book I read in the series because it got SO boring when I got half way through the 5th book. And, I hate the way the series ends (I took a sneak peak in the last book and found out what happened--lol). So therefore, I advise you, if you DO NOT like books with sad endings, don't read this!!!
John Marsden be my friend.......2003-12-14
Although not as action-packed and satisfying as the previous books in the series, Darkness Be My Friend stands out as one of the best. It would be a mistake to say the book is slow, however-there are still several suspensful scenes of action. This book may let readers down by lacking a huge, explosive victory from our protagonists, but this serves to make the series even more realistic. Darkness Be My Friend also contains what is surely the saddest scene in the entire series. This is a must-read, of course, for anyone who enjoyed the previous books.
Part of a great series.......2003-08-17
This book is an essential part of a great series. From reviews the series can look really 'bad' with too much action, but once you get past the back cover and onto the reading, no one i know has been able to put it down - and that goes for the whole series. Once you have read the first book, everyone just wants to read them all. If you are reading the reviews after having read the first books, what are you doing? Just order the rest of the series and devour them. I have read all the books through at least 5 times in 2 years, all my friends have read them too. One bit of advice: buy the hardback version so that the spine doesn't bend so much from use that you can't read the titles! These are all great books, with 'realistic' storylines - because whp knows what would/could really happen? These books are so good i phoned my cousin in Oz to make sure it wasn't real. When you read any one of these, you feel like you're sitting on Ellie's shoulder, and that you are feeling and experiencing every feeling (physical and mental) with her. Everytime you read these books, the feelings will get stronger and harsher as you feel like you actually know the characters; if you haven't cried at least twice by the end of the series, what's wrong with you? Everyone should read these, and then think about how you would feel if someone invaded and occupied your home, destroyed your life and hurt you irreparably. War will never seem the same again, it may be necessary but it will always seem evil. We've just seen Iraq being invaded, in order to get rid of Sadaam right? Well when you watch the news and there are people in the background, imagine yourself as one of them. Bombs falling around your ears, people you can't understand shouting and waving guns at you, and expecting you to understand and change every thought and feeling you have been brought up to have. That's what happens to Ellie. Just think about it as real and then i dare you not to feel the pain with her.
Best Book Series Ever.......2002-02-11
I am an avid reader, but this book series is defaitnly the best I have ever read. I bought the first book once it came out, but had to put it down, because of required reading for school. Over teh summer, I started reading it again, and was down before the second day. I rushed out to buy Dead OF The Night.. And waited impatently until my bookstore could have The Killing Frost shipped in. I am now waiting for teh next inslatment, and am very impatient!

This book chaged my life!.......2004-06-26
Whenever I encounter a situation involving anger, I always run to get this book. I have reccomended it to all of my friends, and they have all raved about it. Dr. Herschkopf taught me how to deal with my anger, and how to help others do so as well.
I have never seen a shrink, and now, thanks to this book, I never will have to.
This book changed my life, and I am glad I found it!
My shrink gave me this book........2004-02-19
My shrink gave me this book. She said that Hirshkof was the best professor she ever had. I guess he teaches as thoroughly and entertainingly as he writes. The only problem with the book is the cheap quality of the paperback edition. The cover curls. I gave it to my husband to read the chapters on Sex, Marriage and Divorce. I bought myself a hard cover copy. I felt philanthropic since all the profits go to charity anyway. It read even better the second time. I recommend it very highly.
Great Book.......2004-01-04
I really enjoyed this enlightening book. The info and advice is direct and to the point. FYI, this book is a fabulous bargain considering Dr Herskopf is one of New Yorks top Psychiatrists. Save yourself 1000's in shrink bills just read the book.
Kudos to this shrink!.......2003-07-27
At first, I didn't think I would, but in the end, I liked this book a lot. Book 1, the "what, how and why" of anger is interesting, but predictable, like a good college course. Book 2, the author's original theories, is much better. Book 3, "Anger & sex & kids & teens & mobs, etc." is awesome. I re-read each chapter several times. It blew me away. Kudos to this shrink!
A perfect antidote for dealing with anger.......2003-07-26
I wish I had read this book twenty years ago. My life would be so much better today. I will give this book to each of my children and insist that they finish it before they go back to school. If my ex-wife will speak to me, I will humbly suggest that she read it as well. I will leave two copies at my parents' graves (but I'll take them back after they're done). Seriously, without question the most useful book I have ever read.

Book Description
England's past comes alive in this classic tale featuring the disinherited knight Ivanhoe, his fair lady Rowena, and such larger-than-life characters as Richard the Lion Hearted and Robin Hood. A novel of the crusades, chivalry, and courtly love that not only recreated history, but made history as well.
Customer Reviews:
The original historical romance.......2005-12-23
The book that defined the genre. Set in late 12th century England, its cast includes Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, Prince John, Richad Coeur de Lion and the Knights Templar. A novel of chivalry and robber barons, battles and court intrigue, fights for justice and the love of beautiful ladies. What's not to like?
Scott's archaic and flowery language leads many to describe the book as 'dry' or 'boring', but as pointed out by other reviewers it rewards those with the brains and persistence to appreciate it. It makes for a heavy read, but captures the authenticity sought by every period novel.
If you think a 19th century romance must be sanitised or have idealised characters, rest assured. There's no lack of violence or human flaws in Ivanhoe, though modern readers may still find it a tad contrived; but that's part of the period charm. Mandatory reading for those who claim to be history buffs or connoisseurs of English literature.
This Signet edition contains Scott's original footnotes and dedicatory epistle.
If you are dumb, stay away, if you are smart, dive in.......2005-10-11
I have heard that this is "very dry reading" and that the first chapter is "the most boring chapter in Western Civilization." It is obvious to this author that the one who claimed these very drastic condemnations of the brilliant and beautiful writing of the Great Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) is, unfortunately of very little intelligence when it comes to criticizing classic literature.
How sad it is when you are in school and the redneck ignoramous reads to the class trash like Where the Red Fern Grows or the Summer of the Monkeys when they should be reading masterpieces like the incredible novel you see before you. It would produce much more enlightened children with it's vivid descriptions and historical characters such as Richard Coeur de Lion (Richard I or Richard the Lionhearted, whom as I was told by history teachers was bisexual. All part of the Gay conspiracy trying to rewrite history and say that their perversions have been all through history and make it acceptable to be gay. They say people like that were gay when there is absolutely no proof and no way of finding any proof. I question Alexander the Great's homosexuality also. Who were his conquored people? THE GREEKS. What peoples still are bitterly prejudice to the Macedonians? THE GREEKS. Who were the first queers? THE GREEKS.
Getting to the point, this novel is one of the greatest and most influential to Western Literature (and Russian Lit for that matter, for it was Scott who influenced the likes of Pushkin and Lermontov). It also tells an archetype romantic story with the stereotypical definition of a "romance" in it. The main character Wilfred wants to marry a princess named Rowena. When her father refuses, Wilfred sets out on adventures to prove his worth. He meets many of the warring tribes of the Middle Ages such as the Normans and the Templars. This novel is probably the most action packed adventure story unmatched until the likes of Alexandre Dumas, pere with novels such as The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo about twenty years after the publication of Scott's great novel.
So don't let people of very little brain convince you to turn away from magnificent works such as this when they criticize it like a reader of 4th grade level just because of a "dry and boring 1ST CHAPTER when this great novel has so much more in its 400+ pages to offer.
Good story, but very dry reading.......2002-03-12
Sir Walter Scott's tale of "Ivanhoe" is an enjoyable story, but it taxes the readers patience many times over. If you can bear with the very lengthy descriptions, and what has to be the driest, most boring first chapter of any book in Western Civilization, you will actually find yoursel drawn into the story. Two quick notes, you may want Cliff's Notes or an on-line equivalent to help keep straight as to who is who, and to help get a better understanding of the often arcane writing style. Second, this Signet classic version of the book really needs to be re-set for a more modern typeset. This book is still using the typeset from the 1962 printing, and it is very difficult on the eye. Most other classic books have since been re-set to a larger print to make it easier on the eye. "Ivanhoe" should not be an exception. (Note: other editions of "Ivanhoe" available in mass market form ARE available in an easier-to-read print, and the reader may want to consider them over this edition.)

Book Description
Hailed by Victor Hugo as 'the real epic of our age,' Ivanhoe was an immensely popular bestseller when first published in 1819. The book inspired literary imitations as well as paintings, dramatizations, and even operas. Now Sir Walter Scott's sweeping romance of medieval England has prompted a lavish new television production.
In the twelfth century, Sir Wilfred of Ivanhoe returns home to England from the Third Crusade to claim his inheritance and the love of the lady Rowena. The heroic adventures of this noble Saxon knight involve him in the struggle between Richard the Lion-Hearted and his malignant brother John: a conflict that brings Ivanhoe into alliance with the mysterious outlaw Robin Hood and his legendary fight for the forces of good.
'Scott's characters, like Shakespeare's and Jane Austen's, have the seed of life in them,' observed Virginia Woolf. 'The emotions in which Scott excels are not those of human beings pitted against other human beings, but of man pitted against Nature, of man in relation to fate. His romance is the romance of hunted men hiding in woods at night; of brigs standing out to sea; of waves breaking in the moonlight; of solitary sands and distant horsemen; of violence and suspense.' For Henry James, 'Scott was a born storyteller. . . . Since Shakespeare, no writer has created so immense a gallery of portraits.'
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful!.......2006-01-22
No wonder this novel is a classic! I'm sure there isn't much I can add to the praises of Ivanhoe. I will just say that I enjoyed it very much. I mostly wanted to comment on the edition that I read.
I purchased The Modern Library Classics (paperback) edition. The quality of the book is fair, for a paperback. There are a few footnotes throughout the book and quite a few notes on the text in the back of the book, some were written by Scott himself. I only found a few of these notes to be helpful; as for the rest, they did nothing to enhance my understanding of the text and some left me with even more questions than when I started. Many of them refer to other books for further explanation.
Also, there are quite a few phrases throughout the story in Latin and French. Some are explained in the text while the rest are left untranslated. I wish their translations would have been included in the above mentioned notes. I wish there had been a pronounciation guide for the names of the characters as well.
I would give the book 5 stars but for the problems I mentioned above. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the middle-ages, knights, chivalry, King Richard, etc...even if you have no particular interest in these things, you should at least give the book a chance. After all, it's a classic and as with most classics, you can hardly ever go wrong.
Is tolerance the lesson?.......2006-01-10
Depending on your tastes Ivanhoe could either be considered a favorite or despised. Make no mistake - for today's average reader "Ivanhoe" is an extremely difficult read. The language was considerd archaic 200 years ago. Also, the reader must have a fair amount of knowledge about the Middle Ages - if you have never heard of the battle of Hasting or why it is significant... this is defintely not the book for you!
Personally, I found "Ivanhoe" to be both enjoyable and enlightening. While I do realize that Sir Walter Scott did make some historical errors - I found his despriction of "the Lists" to be informative.
The quality of the plot for "Ivanhoe" can not be questioned. It has all of the elements for a great read... deceipt, honour, a love triangle, prejuidices, castle sieges and battles to death! Scott's mastery of detail (sometimes a little TOO mastered) engulfs you into the world of the 12th century.
I especially enjoyed the involvement of Robin Hood, Richard The Lionheart and Prince John as main characters. Their historical involvement really helped to hold my interest.
The treatment of Jews is an interesting development throughout "Ivanhoe". Despite all the characters treating people of the jewish faith as sub-human "Ivanhoes" the last three pages show the prejuidices can be overcome and people of different faiths should learn tolerance. This is suprising stuff for the perion in which Sir Walter Scott penned it!
I found "Ivanhoe" to be very enjoyable - and at times a page-turner. The difficulty of the language was a challenge at times (and I am sure their are few plot points that I did miss), but as a whole I would suggest it to all readers who enjoy a bit of a challenge.
