Spas: Exceptional Destinations Around the World
Eloise Napier Manufacturer: Abbeville Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Accessories:
ASIN: 0789207982 |
Book Description
A beautifully illustrated book featuring fabulous, healthy resorts across the globe. This dream book of incredible places to be pampered and unwind unveils the world's twenty-five best vacation spas. Each is a traveler's haven set in a stunning location and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. And each one offers a memorable experience and, to varying degrees, a combination of indulgence, adventure, health, and relaxation. Some of these spas are life-changing, while others will rejuvenate you in the short term so that you can return to your normal life feeling refreshed and re-energized. Dip into these pages and visit the Beauty Farm in Megève, France, where you can lie on a bed of warm rounded stones in a treatment cabin. There a therapist, using hot basalt pebbles, will ease your tense muscles. Or travel to the Himalayas, the ultimate destination spa, where the sights, smells, sounds, and therapies are probably closer to what was practiced 5,000 years ago than anything else in the world today.
The spas featured range from exotic paradise retreats to Alpine resorts, including the holistic sanctuary of Therme Vals in Switzerland. Set among the Graubunden Mountains, seven pools are offered from a steamy "fire" pool to a scented flower pool, each naturally formed by water springs. Inside there is a health center providing a combination of acupressure and massage using oils blended from twenty-two carat gold. In contrast, the Delphi Mountain Resort & Spa in Leenane, Ireland--a location so remote that the Romans never managed to reach it--offers the opportunity to spend your days cocooned in the spa or pursuing such rigorous activities as kayaking through sea caves or rock climbing on vast walls. Information about how to contact these spas is also provided. Whatever your preference: tropical paradise, mountainous retreats, thermal springs, or wilderness escapes, this book will help you find your perfect spa destination.

Alias: Close Quarters is an original prequel novel based on the hit TV series Alias, created by J. J. Abrams.
Keeping tabs on Marianna, the daughter of Italy's president, isn't the type of assignment Michael Vaughn was expecting. He's a newly minted CIA officer, not a babysitter.
Never mind that there's a plot to assassinate Marianna's father. Or that she's incredibly beautiful. Or that ditching her security detail makes her laugh.
Political assassins are no laughing matter.
And neither are gorgeous girls undercover.
Customer Reviews:
Good read for all "Alias" fans.......2004-07-15
Vaughn is the Best!.......2004-04-22
Mystery novels normally follow a certain formula and the antagonist is supposed to be the person you least likely suspect. a good writer will make this surprise believable and as we look back see with excellent hindsight all the clues we missed. for me, this book followed the formula; however, when the antagonist was finally unveiled i wasn't all that surprised. the antagonist was understandable but it also kind of seemed like, "oh, this is the person no one will suspect so here!" and for that reason, i only give 4 stars.
i love the tv series and have enjoyed reading the books because it allows me to see these characters develop from the young adults they were when first recruited, the maturity and experience they seem to be gaining as each mission is completed with ultimate success (amid their own human folly) and seeing how it relates to the characters that i wait to watch sunday night.
What a Read!.......2004-04-12
This book is an easy read and will be enjoyable to fans and non-fans alike. Happy reading!

A Dangerous Babysitting Job.......2003-10-02
I loved this book. We got to understand Vaughn a little more in a story that holds together much better then his last prequel did. It has a fun surprise for series fans in it. And the plot was the most original of the prequel novels so far.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a fun, quick book to read.

Grid Generation and Adaptive Algorithms (Ima Volumes in Mathematics and Its Applications)
Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag Telos ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0387988580 |
Book Description
The papers in this volume are based on lectures given at the IMA Workshop on Grid Generation and Adaptive Algorithms held during April 28-May 2, 1997. Grid generation is a common feature of many computational tasks which require the discretization and representation of space and surfaces. The papers in this volume discuss how the geometric complexity of the physical object or the non-uniform nature of the solution variable make it impossible to use a uniform grid. Since an efficient grid requires knowledge of the computed solution, many of the papers in this volume treat how to construct grids that are adaptively computed with the solution. This volume will be of interest to computational scientists and mathematicians working in a broad variety of applications including fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, materials science, chemistry, and physics. Papers treat residual-based error estimation and adaptivity, repartitioning and load balancing for adaptive meshes, data structures and local refinement methods for conservation laws, adaptivity for hp-finite element methods, the resolution of boundary layers in high Reynolds number flow, adaptive methods for elastostatic contact problems, the full domain partition approach to parallel adaptive refinement, the adaptive solution of phase change problems, and quality indicators for triangular meshes.

The Haunted Major
Robert Marshall Manufacturer: Ecco ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0880016698 |
Book Description
Introduced by John Updike and published in America for the first time, The Haunted Major recounts a golf match of epic proportions between adversaries. In this uproarious tale about human conceit and the supernatural, Major the Honorable John William Wentworth Gore, an English gentleman of sublime self-esteem, challenges crack golfer Jim Lindsay to a game for the chance to propose marriage to Mrs. Gunter, a beautiful American millionairess. Although "Jacky" Core, the narrator, alleges to be a marvelously accomplished sportsman, he has never set foot on a fairway and has only seven days to learn to pitch, putt, and drive the course like a veteran.
To prepare for the match, which is to take place on the fictitious St. Magnus links in Scotland (based on the Old Course at St. Andrews), Gore secretly hires a coach and transforms his hotel room into a golf studio, outfitted with turf, a moveable hillock, a bunker, and specially padded walls to absorb drives. Gore is set to win or lose like a gentleman when the revengeful ghost of a Scottish cardinal with some odd-shaped clubs materializes, adding an otherworldly twist to the story.
This new edition, with John Updike's spirited introduction and Harry Furniss's humorous original illustrations, fixes The Haunted Major in the uppermost tier of sports classics.

Book Description
Leonhard Euler was one of the most prolific mathematicians that have ever lived. This book examines the huge scope of mathematical areas explored and developed by Euler, which includes number theory, combinatorics, geometry, complex variables and many more. The information known to Euler over 300 years ago is discussed, and many of his advances are reconstructed. Readers will be left in no doubt about the brilliance and pervasive influence of Eulerâs work.Customer Reviews:
A great book.......2006-10-12
Charming but historically inaccurate........2006-01-26
Nice book for readers with a background in math.......2003-04-25
The book is not suitable for people who want to learn more about the person Euler, but do not have a math background, because 75% of the book is about real math (equations). So if you don't enjoy reading equations, do not buy the book.
Summary: as enjoyable as the other Dunham books, although a bit more expensive (but still worth the money).
William Dunham has done it again!.......2002-03-25
This book in many ways resembles Dunham's Journey Through Genius. As in that book, Dunham has selected 15 or so theorems to present in detail, and he makes an effort to keep the proofs similar in spirit to the original proofs. Although the proofs are complete and the book is full of equations, they are accessible to anyone with a high school level of mathematics education. But in addition to the proofs, Dunham also provides historical context, as well as commentary on how later mathematicians used and improved upon Euler's work. For example, we learn that Euler began to loose the sight in his right eye at the age of 32, and that despite his virtual blindness by the age of 65, he continued his prolific rate of output until his death at age 84.
The book's title is taken from a quote by Laplace, who said, ``Read Euler, read Euler. He is the master of us all.'' Indeed, if you have any interest in mathematics, you will almost certainly find yourself in complete agreement with Laplace's sentiments by the time you finish reading this wonderful book. ...

Book Description
Fought on 14th October 1066 between Duke William of Normandy and Harold Godwinson, king of England, the Battle of Hastings irrevocably changed the course of English history. William's victory ensured his accession to the English throne. Hastings was also decisive in another way: the horrendous casualties suffered by the English nobility both there and at the two earlier battles of Fulford and Stamford Bridge resulted in there being very few men influential enough to lead an English resistance once William had been crowned. William would survive long enough to successfully found a Norman dynasty of English kings.

Book Description
Very few battles of the medieval period can be regarded as decisive but Hastings was certainly one of them. Fought on 14th October 1066 between Duke William of Normandy and Harold Godwinson, king of England, the outcome irrevocably changed the course of English history. William's victory was largely due to the tactical superiority of his forces: not only did he possess infantry and cavalry, but also a significant number of archers or crossbowmen, to whose withering fire the English could make little reply. The eventual death of King Harold prompted an English collapse - the successful outcome ensuring William's accession to the English throne.Customer Reviews:
