      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good Compact Guide.......2001-01-05

I found the guide to be quite good and conveniently compact. My one criticism is that information for a given area is in several different places in the book. For example, there is a section on Wan Chai as a tour, another for Wan Chai at night, another section under excursions, and then Wan Chai restaurants are listed in a fourth section, altho some are included in the previous sections. This made for a lot of page flipping back and forth. This should all be consolidated into one section on Wan Chai. I thought the info was very good, just a lot of page flipping ("Now, where did I see that?")

3 out of 5 stars The 1997 edition is more up to date.......1998-10-29

Aimed at the vacationer or business traveller, the strength of this guide is its guided walks/day trip itineraries...and in for a place whose coastline and skyline is forever changing, not to mention its complete change of sovreignty, the more up to date your guidebook the better!

                  Book Description

Lucas is a genius matchmaker, and everyone at Thomas Jefferson High School seems to need his expertise. When it comes to finding his own true love, things aren't so easy. He's just had his heart broken and the prospects aren't promising.

But Lucas has bigger worries—his best friend, Cate, has just been dumped, and he has to find her new Mr. Right. And right on schedule, on the first day of their senior year, a new guy shows up at TJHS. Derek is friendly, athletic, and the hottie of the century.

As the matchmaker tries to work his magic, it seems like Derek is flirting with Lucas more than with Cate. Which makes everyone wonder—who is Derek interested in, anyway?

                                  Book Description

The main features of this volume are: 1) It is devoted to the basic principles of asymptotics and their applications; 2) It presents both traditional approaches as well as less widely used and new approaches such as one- and two-point Padé Approximants, constitutive equations, methods of boundary perturbations, etc.; 3) A general introduction to the subject suitable for non-specialists. Compared with other published books in the field the authors have paid special attention to examples and the discussion of results rather than burying them in formalism, in notation and in technical details. Audience: Researchers in mechanics, physics and applied mathematics as well as in engineering. Graduate students and even high school students can benefit from reading the book, which does not require any scientific knowledge of mathematics and physics.

Cruel Paradise deftly weaves together the firsthand stories of men and women who emigrated from the Netherlands throughout the twentieth century. A skilled stylist with an unassuming presence, Hylke Speerstra brings readers along as he circles the globe interviewing transplanted Netherlanders in the United States, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, and Australia. Combining elements of memoir and travelogue, his narrative speaks to universal human experience as it vividly recounts the trials and successes of these emigrants. Common themes of personal identity and family, uprootedness and loss, nostalgia and bittersweet joy run throughout the book. Yet these emigrants have had very diverse life experiences. Some have become affluent beyond imagining, brushing elbows with Rockefellers, Kennedys, and movie producers; others have spent the better part of a lifetime eking out their living as farmers. Often poignant, sometimes amusing, always memorable, these stories provide a moving tribute to those who left their homeland behind with little more than uncertain hopes for their children. Cruel Paradise will interest all readers of memoirs or travel literature, especially those with Dutch connections or with emigrant tales of their own.

Agape Leadership promises to be one of the most spiritually inspiring books you have ever read. As we start the 21st century, we desperately need examples of what Christian leaders are to be like. Robert Cleaver Chapman (1803-1902) provides an extraordinary example of Christ-like, agape leadership. Although little known today, he was a widely respected Christian leader in England during the last century. Chapman became legendary in his own time for his gracious ways, his patience, his kindness, his balanced judgment, his ability to reconcile people in conflict, his absolute fidelity to Scripture, and his loving pastoral care. By the end of his life, Chapman was known worldwide for his love, wisdom and compassion. See godly, pastoral leadership in action through these biographical snapshots from Chapman's life.

"It will challenge you to be a better leader, a more committed believer, and a brighter light to the world." -- Greg Stephenson, Grace Community Church, Grace Ministries International

"R.C. Chapman's life is a vivid illustration of Jesus' teaching. I have given a copy of the book to pastors and ministry leaders with the prayer that we might reject a professional ministry mindset and follow Jesus as Chapman did." -- Peter Hubbard, Pastor/Teacher, North Hills Community Church, Taylors, SC

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the most outstanding Christian book ever written.......2007-09-06

I wish every Christian would read this! A powerful spiritual fragrance emanates from every page.

This is truly one of the most revolutionary books ever written. It takes you right back into the heart of New Covenant Christianity. Chapman really did seek to live the Christian life as Jesus did.

I have observed a whole congregation transformed after almost all the members had read this book.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Agape Leadership.......2005-08-27

This brief glimpse into the heart of Agape Leadership in the life of R.C. Chapman is life changing, and brings one to the heart of the Gospel, and what a servant of Christ is supposed to be. If all pastors were like Chapman this would indeed be a much different world, and the church would be what Jesus intended. Millions more would be won for Christ if Christians would live, and love like Chapman.

This book serves as a model for not only Christian leadership, but Christian life.

Throughout the book, we are encouraged to deal lovingly with people, and that becomes our witness to others.

You will be amazed at the life of R.C.Chapman.

4 out of 5 stars A model for "countercultural" Christian leadership........2000-05-06

This book gives us a clear example of "countercultural" Christian leadership, as demonstrated in the life of R.C. Chapman. The reader will be inspired to walk in his example, even as he sought to walk in the example of Christ.

Robert Chapman provides an extraordinary example of godly Christian leadership -- something desperately needed today. Although very few are familiar with this 19th century British pastor, teacher, and evangelist, few will not be inspired by him. This account of his life and ministry may in fact be one of the most spiritually challenging books you may ever read!

The book sets forth the qualities of true -- agape, loving -- Christian leadership:

                                    --Love for God's Word

                                    -- Spirit-controlled character

                                    -- Being patient and gentle

                                    -- Maintaining unity

                                    -- Disciplining and reconciling

                                    -- Practicing hospitality

                                    -- Giving to the needy

                                    -- Continuing consequences

                                    and more. Some excerpts:

To reform the church of God we should always begin with self-reform. Schisms and divisions will increase so long as we begin with reforming others. Wisdom is only with the lowly.

Humility is the secret of fellowship, and pride the secret of division.

The ruin of a kingdom is a little thing in God's sight, in comparison with division among a handful of sinners redeemed by the blood of Christ.

The best testimony that Stephen bore was his last: not when preaching and working miracles, but when he pleaded for his persecutors; for then he most resembled the Lord Jesus in patience, forgiveness and love.

(To a young missionary, heading for the field:) Keep low, look up, and press forward.

The Bottom Line: This book offers a much needed corrective to the kind of corporate (= worldly) leadership styles that dominate most church fellowships today. In that, it ranks with Schaeffer's Mark of the Christian. We highly recommend it be distributed widely, that we might see a generation of Christian leaders arise who are marked by their love, wisdom, and compassion.

                                    This is a must read.

Incredible insight into what it means to become more Christ like and be a Man after God's own heart. This is a must read to anyone in leadership in their local church.

No volunteers tramped with more innocent resolve on the drill fields of 1861 than the farmers, immigrants, shopkeepers, and "piney" camp boys who volunteered for the Second, Sixth, and Seventh Wisconsin and the Nineteenth Indiana Infantry. The Men Stood Like Iron is the moving, often melancholy, story of how the backwoods "Calico boys" became soldiers of the celebrated "Iron Brigade."

5 out of 5 stars Reads Like an Adventure Novel!.......2004-12-13

If you have never read a book about the Iron Brigade, this is the one to begin with. This book reads like an adventure novel. No matter if you are 10 or 100 years old, this easy to read book is packed with page after page of thrilling adventure. I could not put it down. "What will happen to these brave boys next? Will they survive, and if so, HOW?" was constantly on my mind.

The book is the story of the Brigade as seen from within the ranks of the 6th Wisconsin Regiment. It draws heavily from the memoirs of Rufus Dawes, one of the officers leading the regiment. He was an excellent and compassionate writer, and his first hand observations put you immediately in the ranks.

The history of the Brigade, from enlistment at Camp Randall to the Battle of Gettysburg is told in fast paced and very accessible form. History buffs will enjoy this one as well as newcomers to the subject of the Civil War. After reading this book I was so impressed by the valor of these men, I decided to join the Iron Brigade and become a Civil War reenactor!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Nolan's.......2004-06-01

Readers who pick up this book will almost certainly read Alan Nolan's book on the Iron Brigade as well. With that in mind, if you only want or intend to read one, read Nolan's.

This book is much more specific than Nolan's in identifying certain individuals in different companies and offers a more anecdotal approach to the story of the Iron Brigade.

But this book centers almost completely on the Wisconsin regiments (2nd,6th,7th and the 5th for the brief period it was part of the brigade): other than a prologue of sorts beginning at Gettysburg, this book covers only up to Antietam. In reading this edition, a reader could easily forget that the 19th Indiana is part of the brigade, and the book ends before the 24th Michigan becomes part of the brigade at all.

The book is entertaining and very readable, The book's title is "How the Brigade won its Name" and it tells that story and stops. However, Nolan's book does that and covers up to "the Last Stand at Gettysburg," until the brigade is diluted with non-Western regiments. As a result, between reading the two, you could come away feeling as though this book's story is incomplete.

I read a lot of books on the Civil War. I had kin in the the 6th Wisconsin. I read everything I can find about the Iron Brigade. Mr. Herdegen is one of the great authorities on this famed and proud unit. I have enjoyed and learned from every one of his books. Well done! A must read for anyone who calls themselves a Civil War buff. My God....what a war...what a unit! Many American soldiers are button pushers these days. Back then, a man actually saw who he was fighting. The Brigade fought like wildcats. To get a feel for what it was like read Dawes and Herdegen. Read this book!!!

4 out of 5 stars This was my first in-depth Iron Brigade book--.......2001-03-12

I found it very helpful and very inspirational. The book's four maps are especially clear. Quite a number of titles are available on this Brigade, and I was happy to find the book by Rufus R. Dawes, "A Full Blown Yankee of the Iron Brigade: Service with the Sixth Wisconsin Volunteers" now out in paper! Mr. Herdegen uses this earlier work, and now it is available to all CW students. I found much to share with others from this book, and I recommend it highly.

I'm a voracious reader on the subject of American History, particularly of our Civil War. I'm currently in the middle of this book, and I came on line to look for related titles. My interest in the Iron Brigade has been whetted! Precious few unit histories or service memoirs bring to life their subjects in such a deeply human, vivid and honoring way as this. If I could only keep or save an armful of my hundreds of books, this would certainly be one of them. I'm going back to read it...

Forget the year 2000 bug, says Eugene Linden, the world's in for something much bigger than power outages and fouled-up databases. The clues are everywhere, but what do they all mean? The Future in Plain Sight argues that the history of the world is full of ebbs and flows, periods of stability followed by instability. Every now and again, everything changes: the climate, the social order, the shape of the terrain. Linden outlines the nine major indications that the world is ready for another round of instability, claiming that the political, social, economic, environmental, and biological problems we all face today are not as unrelated or as random as they may seem.

Yet Linden actively discredits most doomsday scenarios, which usually seem to blame some outside force for bringing on disaster. In his view, the existing problems will continue to feed upon and exacerbate each other. Crowded cities, for example, put further stress on a sick, polluted environment, allowing diseases to spread faster, while social and political unrest causes native populations to uproot and immigrate to other countries, creating new cycles of poverty, disease, and overpopulation.

Linden doesn't pretend to know how the human race will deal with these issues, nor does he claim to know all the answers. But The Future in Plain Sight tells a compelling and frightening story that deserves to be heard out. --Elisabeth Higgins

                                    Book Description

For more than half a century, our planet has enjoyed a prolonged period of privilege and stability. Recent decades have seen some of the most extraordinary prosperity in all of human history, and we have come to view this as the norm.

                                    But what if instability returned?

And what can we do to prevent that from happening?

In The Future in Plain Sight, author Eugene Linden lays out the nine factors that are symptomatic of instability in today's world. They include overpopulation, the widening gap between rich and poor, the resurgence of infectious disease, and the effects of a changing global climate. Linden explores these and other destabilizing forces and tells us what we can do to plan and prepare for life in an unsettled and unsettling universe.

From crises in the world's financial markets to the breakdown of natural systems that support human life, The Future in Plain Sight is a powerful look at what lies in store for us in the coming decades.

I read one or two of these futurist books a year and I found this as good as any. He has done a good job of categorizing all the things that effect civilization on the planet. As with most of these types of books we are shown that most trends have come out of nowhere and completely unforseen and unpredicted.Of course; there has always been struggles between peoples, natural disasters, major outbreaks of diseases, financial upheavels, conflicts among religions and political ideologies, rich and poor, elimination of resources and species, and on and on.At any point in history when one stops and looks back one sees a string of major events causing great turmoil at the time but as time goes on they all get consumed in the process and progress. However;looking forward always tends to make one think that we have been lucky so far ;but all indicators are pointing at the future as being on a direct path to disaster.Nobody knows what the future will bring ,but if we have to guess,it must be bad.Normally, predictions in books like this are so vague that no matter what the future brings it can be construed to fit the prediction. The other approach is to make the prediction so far in the future that nobody remembers it.A case in point; that the limiting factor for the number of vehicles would be that there was only enough rubber trees to make so many tires,..guess what, we learned to make synthetic tires which ended up better and cheaper.
It's tough enough to predict the near (a couple of years)future, but when it comes to several decades--it' fun to fantasize, but don't take it seriously.
The author thought he would try anyway. So,remember now, he wrote this book in 1998.He came up with the idea of terrorists exploding a home made fifteen-kiloton nuclear device on the outskirts of Las Vegas killing 8000 people in 2006.This caused a crisis that wrecked all the world economies for years to come.
Lo and behold in 2001, just 3,not 8 years;such an event ,9/11 happened and the world's financial systems didn't crumble. It just shows the resiliance of mankind.
Anyway,Linden has really detailed the issues ahead, but the future remains to be seen.A good read nonetheless.Maybe one should put it away for someone to read in 2050;and I doubt that he'll be off in the wilderness ,dressed in a robe, tending his little herd of sheep,on his little self-sufficient family farm. That is, unless that is where he is ,and what he is doing now.

5 out of 5 stars A very prescient,, important book.......2002-08-13

Author Linden's basic premise is that history fluctuates between periods of stability and instability. The last half of the 20th century was stable. The first half of the 21st promises to be anything but stable. The book is tremendously well thought out, and persuasive.

Linden visits nine areas, including climate change, increased population and larger cities, resource depletion, environmental degradation, religious fundamentalism/fanaticism, economic instability, etc. These analyses are then followed by realistic, but speculative, scenarios describing life in the event of the anticipated change. Author Linden does an excellent job in avoiding the Cassandra-style, apocalyptic language so common to writers in this area. Surely, the facts alone are sufficient, and Linden is to be praised for discerning the difference.

All are well done, but I was particularly impressed by the chapter on religious fundmentalism. As Linden so carefully describes matters, this fundamentalism, Christian or Muslim, is a response to the scientific and economic uncertainty of today's society. The true believer yearns to return to a simpler, more certain, time, and is perfectly willing to throw out the baby with the bath water to get it, including equal rights, scientific advances, better living conditions, etc. Anyone skeptical of this statement is invited to consider Iran, the Taliban, Creationism, and the like. I have not found Linden's peer in describing the origin and effects of religious fundamentalism on society as we know it. The whole book is more than worth it for this one chapter alone. Every thinking person should read it.

In short, the book is an outstanding addition to anyone's library. I recommend it very highly.

Eugene Linden explains that most of civilization's history has included long periods of remarkable stability, including the last few decades. However, stability is not the norm and indications show it is ending. Thanks to overpopulation, technological change and environmental degradation, profound instability is likely in this century. The clues to future instability are in plain sight. You can see them when you compare what has happened in the past to what is likely to happen in the future.

In the first half of this book, Linden makes a persuasive case for some of his basic predictions, though he is definitely a pessimist. The scenarios in the second half of the book, intended to illustrate what will happen if these predictions come true, are really speculative fiction masquerading as futurology. Still, Linden's basic premise is sound and his warnings should be taken seriously. We... recommend the book to those involved in long-range business planning and trend research.

3 out of 5 stars Where has the faith and hope gone?.......1999-09-16

Good book, nice reading. But... Mister Linder asks us to look for the signs, to recognize them. Well, many other signs are there to be noticed. Signs of the past, actual facts which tell us modern (western) mankind always find reasonability before it gets 'to late'. And why? Because it will cost to much otherwise. Wars ended because of the costs, the 3rd World War didn't burst out because of the costs, and we still use classical natural resources because of the costs. But... the more specialized we get about ww- financial - and marketing processes (the more knowlegde we gain about those issues), the more we'll try (and succeed) to keep that concept alive. And better: to improve and expand. The internet is a great example of that (building a second - virtual - world), but also the Marsian (and other) explorations are. We live in a beautiful era, and it is about time we acknowlegde our accomplishments so far, treasure our goods ánd faults, and give ourselfs to the accummulating evolution we as a species now go through. And this with the most of respect for all that is, and lives. (We are) Gods alike.

                                    1 out of 5 stars Nothing here.......1999-08-16

This book is less than speculation. The flashpoints of the future cannot be recognized from our current perspective. Throughout human history watershed events are completely unforseen because our frames of reference are always based on current circumstances. Statistically, all human behaviors are quite predictable, thus stable. Financial cataclysm? No way! The stock market is extremely predictable and stable if we shed our contemporary goggles that blind us from the truth. This book is hogwash.

This book rejects apocalyptic pronouncements that the end of the millennium represents the 'end' of nature as well. Remaking Reality brings together contributors from across the human sciences who argue that a notion of "social nature" provides great hope for the future. Applying a variety of theoretical approaches to social nature, and engaging with debates in politics, science, technology and social movements surrounding race, gender and class, the contributors explore important and emerging sites where nature is now being remade with considerable social and ecological consequences.
