    Book Description

Spreading across the top of North America from Alaska to Newfoundland and sweeping across the breadth of Russia to the fjords of western Scandinavia, is the great northern forest.  An immense swath of spruce, fir, larch, and aspen, it is arguably the largest forest ecosystem in the world.  In The Great Northern Kingdom, noted science writer, naturalist, and wildlife photographer Wayne Lynch examines the animals and plants of this mighty forest as the seasons unfold.

Through the raging wildfires of spring and summer and into the long, frigid months of a northern winter, the boreal forest teams with life.  Wayne Lynch explores the life-cycles of the mammals, birds, frogs, and flowers that have adapted to the demanding climate of this vast forest.  In the entertaining, informative prose that has become his trademark style, Lynch offers detailed information about the flora and fauna, beautiful colour photographs, environmental issues, and recent scientific discoveries in a fascinating and accessible book.

            Book Description

Despite the large amount of money spent on research into pollution of the indoor environment, the problem remains complex with major gaps in our knowledge of the identities and sources of pollutants and of the effects of prolonged exposure to indoor pollutants on health. Microorganisms in Home and Indoor Work Environments considers one such group of pollutants, namely microorganisms, and more particularly heterotrophic bacteria and fungi. Although our understanding of microorganisms in the home and indoor work environment has accelerated in the last decade, fully elucidating their effects on human health has been plagued by problems of accurate assessment of exposure to microorganisms and precise identification of those present in the environment. This book provides a comprehensive review of the types of microorganism in outdoor and indoor air, their growth and control in home and work environments, and their role in allergic respiratory disease (such as rhinitis, asthma and occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis) and respiratory tract infections including tuberculosis and legionnaires' disease. In addition, chapters address the twin problems of exposure assessment and identification, discuss the methodology for and conduction of investigations of indoor environments and provide keys and color illustrations to assist in the identification of almost one hundred mold, yeast and actinomycete contaminants.

                    Book Description

1916. Tarkington was one of the most popular American novelist and dramatist of his time. The Penrod series of novels deal with the daily life and trials of a boy of eleven and twelve in turn of the century Indiana. The humor is found in the petty hypocrisies of the adults and the naïveté of the children and how those two things intertwine. Penrod is not alone in his travels in this volume he is accompanied by his loyal yet aging dog Duke, his best friend Sam Williams, and two African Americans across the alley, Herman and Verman. Contents: Penrod and Sam; The Bonded Prisoner; The Militarist; Bingism; The In-Or-In; Georgie Becomes a Member; Whitey; Salvage; Reward of Merit; Conscience; The Tonic; Gipsy; Concerning Trousers; Camera Work in the Jungle; A Model Letter to a Friend; Wednesday Madness; Penrod's Busy Day; On Account of the Weather; Creative Art; The Departing Guest; Yearnings; The Horn of Fame; The Party; and The Heart of Marjorie Jones. PENROD SCHOFIELD, having been "kept-in" for the unjust period of twenty minutes after school, emerged to a deserted street. That is, the street was deserted so far as Penrod was concerned. Here and there people were to be seen upon the sidewalks, but they were adults, and they and the shade trees had about the same quality of significance in Penrod's consciousness.

                    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars More Penrod Schofield........2002-03-21

Not quite up to "Penrod," but still a lot of fun. The ending lacks the satisfaction of that of its predecessor--but there's no way it could match THAT.

                    5 out of 5 stars excellent book.......2001-09-27

This is a fine story about young boys growing up. There is a great deal of humor in it, much that is common to little boys. I think that is what makes a book like this so funny. I can relate to it.
However, the electronic version needs to be proofread to remove the countless spelling and punctuation errors. It is a shame that nowadays with all the tools available that editing of this kind is done. Whoever put the e-book together should be ashamed of their lousy work.

4 out of 5 stars Good and Funny Book.......1999-09-14

Another collection of tales about Penrod Schofield and his playmate Sam. Together, the two of them get into more trouble than Dennis the Menace and the Little Rascals combined.

The tales contained weren't as interesting as the original Penrod however I was laughing out loud a time or two. Tarkington has the mannerisms down pat for a twelve year-old boy living around the WW1 area.

This book is listed as a juvenile book, however, I wouldn't recommend it for children unless they weren't afraid of dictionaries and some politically incorrect references to African-Americans. There is also a chilling tale about Penrod and Sam finding an old gun in Sam's father's drawer and what occurred with it. Too real in today's world, however the result of the tale was sobering.

5 out of 5 stars Charming classical piece of literature from the early 1900s.......1998-06-27

A wonderful classic and a prime example of literature in the early 19th century. Booth Tarkington explores the bumptious rambles of a youth from 1913 named Penrod. Penrod does not bump through life alone however, and he is accompanied by his loyal yet aging dog duke, his best friend Sam Williams, and two African Americans across the alley, Herman and Verman. I found this book to be a charming and hillarious classic and is a must for any serious bookworm.

                    4 out of 5 stars A warm and funny picture of a boy's life in pre-WWI America........1997-11-10

A warm and very funny picture of small town boy's life in pre-World War One America. It's told in a series of episodes that center around the two twelve year old or so boys of the title. It's not really a boy's book, despite its reputation. Tarkington's very interested in the psychology of Penrod's family as well as in the ways that kids relate to each other -- but it's all played for laughs. Also a clear picture of the mores of small-town America at a time when homes still had carriage houses in the back -- but no carriages or horses.

The classic tale of two adolescent boys is Booth Tarkington at his best. First written in 1914, it has stood the test of time and is as enjoyable today as it was then.

                                              Book Description

This volume looks at case studies that illustrate the whole range of ethnic conflict: Kenya and Tanzania, where ethnic groups are territorially mixed; the former USSR and Czechoslovakia, where territorial differentiation has permitted different groups to go their own way; Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where peripheral ethnic groups continue to mount a challenge to the central state; Canada and Belgium, where the central state has responded by conceding considerable regional autonomy; and the special case of Israel, where two groups lay exclusive claims to the same territory.

The author discusses the dictatorship in Mexico of Porifiro Diaz (1876-1910). Dissidents were thrown in gulags. The author writes that in the slums of Mexico city, 43 out of every 1000 adults died a year compared to 6 out of a 1,000 in not very healthy London and half the babies did not survive their first year. In the rural areas, wages in 1910 where 35 centavos a day, exactly what they were in 1810. But American business elites were very happy with General Diaz. They could pludner Mexico all they wanted. Andrew Carnegie called him "the Moses and Joshua of his people."

The author goes through the period after the 1910 revolution which saw the U.S. engage in assasination, aggression and ideological warfare to keep the revolutionares from threatening the interests of the American businesses which had made so much loot under Diaz. 1929 saw the creation of what would later become the PRI, a political party to legitimize the dictatorship of the 1910 revolutionaries. That revolution was by that time quite deradicalized and co-opted by the U.S. The most radical revolutionary, Emiliano Zapata, was murdered under president Carranza's orders in 1919, a year before the latter met the same fate. After the presidency of populist Lazaro Cardenas (1934-1940)Mexico's government settled into a state capitalist one-party dictatorship, which controlled some sectors of the economy bbut always allowed foreign participation in those sectors. U.S. investment in the country continually rose as did military aid. The PRI tolerated dissent but always was willing to arrest and "dissapear" such persons if they got too uppity and always could commit fraud if they were about to lose an election. On October 2nd 1968, the Army massacred 337 people as they were about to disperse from a non-violent protest at the Plaza of Three Cultures at the Tlateloclo housing complex.

In the early 80's Mexico, burdened with a huge debt and low world oil prices, went into serious economic decline. Wages went down too and the one bright spot was Mexico's trade surplus with the U.S. as the lowest wages in the hemisphere were paid to the maquiladora workers of the exporting multinational corporations.

Carlos Salinas won the presidential election in 1988 through outright fraud and violence. Salinas engaged in massive privitization policies, earning him much praise from U.S. politicians and business leaders. He crushed strikes at businesses about to be privitized. The creation of NAFTA created unregulated movement of capital. Massive capital flight took place as stronger U.S. multinationals overtook local competitors in the Mexican market and sent their money back to the U.S. In December 1994, Mexico was in serious crises as it had to default on short term bond payments. Mexico was in its most serious crises since the Great Depression and its people suffered more terribly than usual.

He tells stories of what ordinary people throughout Mexico are dealing with and the hell their country has been put through. He looks at people attempting to block Jack Nicklaus's "Golden Bear" company from building a golf course and resort complex in their community and stealing all of their water supply, at people fighting the thuggery of the state oil company, at people fighting the looting of their forests and the destruction of the environment of their communities. He looks at people whose land was expropriated to build tourist hotels, who have launched armed rebellions such as in Gurererro and Chiapas. All of these people have encountered U.S. backed terror and torture in response.

The prose style in this book is somewhat plodding.

3 out of 5 stars Polemical writing style.......2002-05-10

Stimulating and entertaining, leads to feelings of outrage, but one wonders if the polemical style of writing defeated objectivity in some places. Could one rely on all the facts, maybe the best available antidote for the propaganda US and Mexican school kids are fed. At the very least: the latter part provides an up to date report on globalization, as applied within Mexico, in the hands of The Masters of the Universe.

4 out of 5 stars Good read despite a few factual problems.......2002-04-29

A good history of the relationship between the United States and other foreign powers and Mexico. Quite entertaining to read. John Ross is really able to bring the story to life and give it feeling. Unfortunately the book is full of factual errors. Literary flare seems to have gotten the best of Ross and drowned out academic scholarship. I didn't read the book looking for errors, and my knowledge of Mexican history isn't that strong yet I still noticed them. If I saw at least half a dozen mistakes then I'm sure there were many more I didn't catch. This is truly a shame because the book presents self as a well researched text which has plenty of interesting facts and tidbits. Perhaps the problems with historical accuracy embody the thoroughly American general amnesia when it comes our collective history. This contrasts with Mexican culture's obsession with historical meaning and symbols.
Scholarship problems aside, the book is definitely worth the read for understanding the history of relations between the United States and the Mexican people.

5 out of 5 stars John Ross' Vision of Mexico.......2001-06-12

History sometimes can be really boring even if you sympathize with the political mindframe of a given author. Ross is not that case. Mexico's history is extremely complex, particularly since it is so much tied to US history ("nice neigbors" the US were not EVER). Yet Ross is so skillful that he will take you through the maze so that you start to understand Mexico. Being a gringo many times disqualifies a historian since these academicians disect Mexican History disregarding the ommipresent neighbor and its expansionism and hegemony policies. Ross knows best. Get ready for a very enjoyable ride on Ross' burro traveling through history. And don't get turned off by the word "Annexation," you will see that is very well chosen for a title.

5 out of 5 stars Words from a Mexican point of view........1998-10-21

This book is a definite "must" for those interested in Mexico's past, present and years to come.

John Ross' takes us through a journey of Mexico's history and provides the reader with an unknown inside of Mexico's culture over the years.

Ross' years and close experience in Mexico surely add to this book a special touch as no other author has before.

This book should be in every reader's shelf interested in Mexico's history.

                                                  Book Description

This photographic guide to sea shore animals and plants represents a completely new approach to field guides. It is aimed at those who wish to find and identify organisms encountered on the sea shore or immediately offshore quickly and easily while promoting their conservation. Uniquely, each species is illustrated by a photograph and, in most cases, accompanied by a line drawing that emphasises the critical features for identification and a map to show the distribution of the species in North-West Europe. The text itself deliberately focuses on features that complement the photographs and facilitate identification non-destructively - where, for example, burrowing worms can only be identified by digging them up and therefore killing them, only the cast, the part usually seen, is shown. Stress is laid on the importance of exploiting all available information for locating and identifying each species - if two species have identical appearance they are described separately and behavioural, geographical, or seasonal features that distinguish them are described in the text. There is no other guide to sea shore organisms like this one; those available are either less comprehensive or less well illustrated. It will appeal to beachcombers of all levels, from families to students and professionals, as well to divers and those visiting the proliferating numbers of commercially run marine aquaria that are open to the public.
