            Book Description

Welcome to Sunnydale High, where midterms and peer pressure are the least of your worries. The Stake Your Destiny series returns Buffy Summers and the Scoobies to the glory days of high school. But this time you control the action and accept the full responsibility of being the Slayer. Interactive story lines advance by the choices you make, leading toward more than a dozen possible endings. Do you have what it takes to be the Slayer, or will you fail and summon a successor?

Ethan Rayne returns to Sunnydale and unleashes a long-trapped evil sorcerer from Middle Ages Bavaria. As if that and Ethan's true motivation weren't enough to keep Buffy from her chemistry homework, she soon finds herself encountering a seemingly random parade of old adversaries out to settle the score.

One could find far better books in this genre to recommend. Has all of Holder's weaknesses in spades: poor characterization, sloppy plot, and no sense of the show universe she attempts to write in.

            2 out of 5 stars Childish.......2005-12-17

This book and all the "Stake Your Destiny" series are good reads if you are under 14 years old. Most Buffy fans are older than 14. For older readers it is a let down. I am a huge Buffy and Angel fan, and most of the books have been great, (I own all the novels that are available) but I was disappointed in this book.

I love Buffy books. I have read and currently own way more than any adult should have. And I usually love Nancy Holder's books. I'm not as interested in the Choose Your Own Adventure formula, but I'm not opposed to it. Loved it as a kid. The Suicide King (another Buffy Choose Your Own) was reasonable.

However, I'm sad to say this book is really awful. The individual pages of writing are good, as is usual for the author. She's good with the characterizations and dialogue. But as one of the other reviewers said, it's a mess. The book tries to cover too much territory with recycled pages of action, and the continuity is completely lacking. You see Cordelia being abducted and follow trying to save her, make a few Choices, and in a few pages...it's like you've forgotten she was abducted as she saunters in with Xander. You're fighting an old foe and dust him...and then in a few Choices, you're worried if that foe is waiting for you. You're wandering in a tunnel and have to choose left/right...only when you go back out, you have to go the wrong way because there is no correct choice (did the tunnel disappear?)

Really, really not worth reading if you're actually going to pay attention to plot threads and continuity.

            5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2005-11-17

            What a fun read.
Ok, so this is first off a childrens book but I as an adult really enjoyed the simplicity of this book.
            Read this just for fun.
My only complaint about this book is that the characters use too much baby talk! Goodness, I don't think anyone age 16 talks like that Ms Nancy Holder, shame on you again for not knowing these characters!

            Keep Me In Mind
            Nancy Holder (2005)

            RATING: 2/5 Stakes

            SETTING: Season Two

CAST APPEARANCES: Buffy, Xander, Willow, Giles, Joyce, Cordelia, Harmony, Snyder, Oz, Ethan Rayne, Jonathan, Devon, Amber, Jenny Calendar

MAJOR ORIGINAL CHARACTERS: George Handley (intern), Lars Von Teufelsblut (sorceror), Der Luger (demon)

BACK-OF-THE-BOOK SUMMARY: "Ethan Rayne returns to Sunnydale and unleashes a long-trapped evil sorceror from Middle Ages Bavaria. As if that and Ethan's true motivation weren't enough to keep Buffy from her chemistry home-work, she soon finds herself encountering a seemingly endless parade of old adversaries out to settle the score."

            REVIEW

Keep Me in Mind is the second in the "Stake Your Destiny" line of choose-your-own-adventure Buffy novels. The plot (if one can call it that) involves Ethan Rayne working with an evil sorceror named Lars Von Teufelsblut (I kid you not) and a demon named Der Luger to free something-or-other trapped in an ancient time capsule. Somehow the magic goes all ka-blooey, and manifestations of old Buffy enemies and allies start popping up all over the place, making for a very trippy read as it's never quite clear who is actually present and who is simply a figment of a spell gone bad.

I'm not opposed to the "Stake Your Destiny" books. The Suicide King, for example, is a pretty interesting read. Keep Me in Mind, however, is an incoherent mess of recycled dialogue and characters, with a recurring didactic tone about the importance of training. There's a few good moments of light, sassy fun and an interesting framing sequence, but on the whole this book should simply be skipped.

            Book Description

In his previous bestsellers, Think and Grow Rich and What Makes the Great Great, Dennis Kimbro revealed the success secrets of highly touted entrepreneurs, corporate climbers, and Olympic athletes, as well as famous black Americans from George Washington Carver to Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, and Jesse Jackson. In What Keeps Me Standing, he turns to another group of sages and mentors: the grandmothers who have long been the backbone of the African American family and community.

Over a period of five years, Kimbro contacted one thousand grandmothers--women from a wide range of backgrounds and locations--asking, "If you had to write a one page letter to your children or the next generation, what would you tell them about life?" Their answers, collected here, show that success in life cannot be measured in terms of wealth and material goods alone. The lives they describe and the advice they proffer capture both a richness in spirit and a strong belief in the power of every individual to take charge of his or her own destiny. In the face of racism, both blatant and subtle, financial struggles, and personal setbacks, black grandmothers have helped their communities in thousands of tangible and intangible ways, providing support, inspiration, and love not only to their own children and grandchildren but also to neighbors, friends, and extended families.

Filled with examples of how even the smallest acts of kindness and compassion can make a difference in the world, What Keeps Me Standing is a treasure trove of the wisdom that comes with years of experience, transformation, and growth. It is the perfect gift.

            5 out of 5 stars Infinite Wisdom.......2004-07-03

Dennis Kimbro set about contacting the sages of our time; our grandmothers. He asked each woman to write a letter to her children and tell them something about life. WHAT KEEPS ME STANDING is Kimbro's excellent compilation of these letters.

Our grandmothers are the backbone of the African-American community. Their eyes have born witness to countless events. Their hands have toiled in ways that we will never know. Their arms have offered comfort through some of life's most challenging times. Their eyes have shed tears of sadness, while their hearts have leapt for joy at the achievements of their people. These are the ones that have stories to tell that are typically not passed down in the history books. These valedictorians of the school of hard knocks are our Black grandmothers.

The pages in this book pass on infinite pearls of wisdom, causing the reader to give pause and reflect on each letter. In one letter, a grandmother writes, "It is not enough to be good; we must be good for something." Another writes, "When you serve others first, you serve yourself best." This book offers profound wisdom that does its very best to capture the epitome of the human spirit. One particular letter that touched me stated to always remember that you are "still a student, still learning every day to be human...to have a live a life full of grace and mercy."

Mr. Kimbro should be commended for his efforts and shown sincere appreciation for setting about the task of collecting the wisdom of our elders, our grandmothers. WHAT KEEPS ME STANDING does not disappoint. This is a must read for all who are seeking enlightenment, encouragement and self-reflection.

            5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2004-01-25

I am truly and deeply touched by this book in ways that words are hardly adequate to describe. I picked it up on a whim in the bookstore, and as I pore my way through its pages, it constantly redirects me and helps me remember the countless lessons my mother, grandmother, and the other "mothers" in my life have taught me. If you are searching for an inspiration that has long since become lost in the muck and mire of everyday life; if you are looking for hope in your purpose and God given gifts again; if you are questioning your faith and the divine path before you, READ THIS BOOK. Well done, Mr. Kimbro.

            5 out of 5 stars The Best.......2003-04-25

If you are looking for a real good Mother's Day present as well as looking for some guidance, and you don't have the benefit of a wise old mama and grandma, well, this is the book for you. Filled with life stories, bits of wisdom, advice, poems and essays, this book will make you come back for more. Written by women in their 50s to their 100s(there were two) who give you words of wisdom and plenty advice. One of my favorite stories was from a 102 year old woman who is the oldest graduate from Spellman(she graduated in 1919), and she talked about how Mr Rosenwald would go out in the southern countryside recruiting young black women with strong Christian values and potential(she said promise)to come to Spellman. She also gave her own personal commentary on the way things were now and why she felt that although this generation had failed to do anything, there was still hope. Her story inspired me the most. A lot of women spoke of growing up in the South, knowing poverty, working for wages that were not compatible with their experience. One lady spoke about working in a laundry for over 50 years because her parents advised her that everybody has got to go out there and work, and so should she. Quite a bit spoke about husbands leaving them(and with no less than seven kids)and how they worked despite of that without the man's help. One woman, who is a great-grandmother, had to take in her four greatgrandkids, because the grandparents and parents as well as the fathers were not interested, and the mother was addicted to crack. Despite the fact that this woman is not in the best of health, she's still thriving and so are the kids(two boys and two girls ages 10-15). One woman quit school, yet went to night school and eventually became a nurse. Another became a nurse after her mother worked hard to do so. She(the daughter) in turn, turned around and helped her mother get her high school diploma and nursing school degree. I could go on and on, but with what I said, you get the point. This book is one of those books that you wish would not stop despite it all. This book deserves more than five stars.(More like 10plus for the content alone). Do yourself a favor Pick up a copy of this book. For yourself, the young mother starting out, anyone looking for a lift, and I promise you, you won't be disappointed.

                    Book Description

This volume contains the edited proceedings of a workshop on stochastic models in geosystems held during the week of May 16, 1994 at the Institute for Mathematics and its applications at the University of Minnesota. The authors represent a broad interdisciplinary spectrum including mathematics, statistics, physics, geophysics, astrophysics, atmospheric physics, fluid mechanics, seismology and oceanography. The common underlying theme was stochastic modeling of geophysical phenomena and papers appearing in this volume reflect a number of research directions that are currently pursued in this area. From the methodological mathematical point of view most of the contributions fall within the areas of wave propagation in random media, passive scalar transport in random velocity flows, dynamical systems with random forcing and self-similarity concepts including multifractals.

3 out of 5 stars The quality of Holmes stories declines.......2002-03-25

This edition by Penguin contains the full-length Sherlock Holmes novel THE VALLEY OF FEAR along with selected short stories from THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and HIS LAST BOW. THE VALLEY OF FEAR was written after Conan Doyle killed off Holmes in 1892, but is set before Holmes' disappearance at the Reichenbach Falls. THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES opens with a story that shows that Holmes didn't die in his struggle with Professor Moriarty after all.

These stories show a decline in Conan Doyle's writing. As Iain Pears wrote in the introduction to another Penguin edition of Holmes stories, in the latter half of his life Conan Doyle turned to mysticism and spiritualism and was increasingly unable to portray the cold rationalism of Sherlock Holmes. Many of the stories lack motivation. The story HIS LAST BOW, which is final story in the canon according to Holmesian time, is a poorly-plotted bit of propaganda for England in World War I.

There are footnotes to each story, compiled by Ed Glinert. An expert on literature set in London, Glinert explains the geographical settings of the Holmes stories, and defines anachronistic terms that are no longer use. He also points out the mistakes Arthur Conan Doyle frequently made in his stories, which are often quite amusing (contradicting timelines, Conan Doyles' incomplete understanding of obscure sciencs, etc).

Because of the illuminating introduction and the helpful footnotes, I'd recommend over any others this edition of THE VALLEY OF FEAR AND SELECTED CASES

                    Book Description

Before his mysterious disappearance and probable death in 1971, Oscar Zeta Acosta was famous as a Robin Hood Chicano layer and notorious as the real-life model for Hunter S. Thompson's "Dr. Gonzo," a fat, pugnacious attorney with a gargantuan appetite for food, drugs, and life on the edge.

Written with uninhibited candor and manic energy, this book is Acosta's own account of coming of age as a Chicano in the psychedelic sixties, of taking on impossible cases while breaking all tile rules of courtroom conduct, and of scrambling headlong in search of a personal and cultural identity. It is a landmark of contemporary Hispanic-American literature, at once ribald, surreal, and unmistakably authentic.

5 out of 5 stars Read this and watch Fear and Loathing in Vegas again.......2004-12-18

By reading this book before watching the movie, you will see what Dr. Gonzo's life was like right before he decides to become a lawyer. If you have ever felt alienated by American ideals, regardless of your race, you will relate to this book. Acosta's writing is good and he does a great job of describing what the character is feeling when he encounters life, drugs, and ulcers.

4 out of 5 stars A good story at heart.......2004-04-10

It is easy to dismiss this book. The hallucinations and drug-induced rants become a little exaggerated and tedious. Although, his friend and partner in crime, Hunter S. Thompson, would detail similar bizarre experiences in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, their intent seemed different. Whereas HST played with fantasy in social satire as a form of comic relief, OZA seems to want you to believe it to be fact...or at least for you to trust that he believed it.
With that said, the story is one of the most self-deprecating, odd, and entertaining autobiographies I have ever read. It can easily stand alone as study of a Mexican-American struggle for the American Dream, as well as companion book to Hunter S. Thompson enthusiasts. Regardless of your intent on picking this book up, OZA will amuse, disgust, and surprise you...making this a worthwhile read.

On a sidenote: This book truly makes you wonder, when HST and OZA joined up, who influenced who more.

3 out of 5 stars Overhyped, Formless And Dull.......2004-03-31

Strong writing in places, but Acosta's style is sometimes hard to follow. Overall, I found the book to be meandering, formless, and kind of dull. The "Chicano in search of his identity" stuff is pure marketing hype. "A Chicano in search of beer, chicks and drugs" would be more like it--but there isn't much of that here, either, in case you're looking for a story of epic debauchery by Hunter Thompson's Samoan attorney. Acosta comes off as a fairly conservative character--he was a Christian missionary in Panama at one time--and basically apolitical at this point in his life. He wanders around the country, goes to bars, tries peyote, smokes some weed, drinks a lot of beer, but it's all pretty low key and, personally, I never thought this kind of thing was very interesting to begin with. Still, Acosta is a fairly sympathetic character and he's a better writer than most. This isn't a bad book, but it isn't that great, either--read Hunter Thompson instead

                    5 out of 5 stars A superb book.......2003-07-09

This book is one of the most memorable I have read in many years. Oscar lived an incredible life, and his ability to render it in this book is consistently amazing. I've read this book about three times, and I reflect on the trajectory of Oscar's life often.

4 out of 5 stars Good saga from a good writer.......2002-12-07

I heard about Oscar'Zeta' Acosta basically from reading Hunter S. Thompson's book but became quickly fascinated by Dr. Gonzo and wanted to know more about him. I was pleased to find out he had also written some books and was even more pleased to find out he was(is?) a very good writer. Truly an inspiration to anyone who has ever felt their identity as an american is something that they have had to come to grips with. Apart from that serious subtext, it also a very entertaining and amusing story that rolls along, introducing some interesting and memorable characters and situations. A passionate human being wrote this book and it is filled with all the honesty and humanity of someone bearing his soul to achieve a greater sense of genuine self which for Oscar Acosta means being "A Brown Buffalo"

                    Book Description

Army scout, buffalo hunter, Indian fighter, and impresario of the world-renowned "Wild West Show," William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody lived the real American West and also helped create the "West of the imagination." Born in 1846, he took part in the great westward migration, hunted the buffalo, and made friends among the Plains Indians, who gave him the name Pahaska (long hair). But as the frontier closed and his role in "winning the West" passed into legend, Buffalo Bill found himself becoming the symbol of the destruction of the buffalo and the American Indian. Deeply dismayed, he spent the rest of his life working to save the remaining buffalo and to preserve Plains Indian culture through his Wild West shows.

This biography of William Cody focuses on his lifelong relationship with Plains Indians, a vital part of his life story that, surprisingly, has been seldom told. Bobby Bridger draws on many historical accounts and Cody's own memoirs to show how deeply intertwined Cody's life was with the Plains Indians. In particular, he demonstrates that the Lakota and Cheyenne were active cocreators of the Wild West shows, which helped them preserve the spiritual essence of their culture in the reservation era while also imparting something of it to white society in America and Europe. This dual story of Buffalo Bill and the Plains Indians clearly reveals how one West was lost, and another born, within the lifetime of one remarkable man.

Bridger, decendent of the reknown Mountain man, Jim Bridger, has written an outstanding book on two of history's most colorful and enduring icons of the American west and the dynamic process that each dealt with during the late 19th century America. Bridger is one the best entertainers in American today and this book only shows a small example of his profound abilities. Years of research and documentation of historical events pays tribute to truth, justice, and injustices, of the American West. This book should be a standard fare for all collegiate history classes and for the general public at large. History is always multi-sided and Bridger illustrates that to perfection. This is a must read. It will impress both scholars and the general public. BRAVO MR. BRIDGER! We look forward to the next! Sing on Great Spirit!

3 out of 5 stars Detailed, but flawed........2007-05-23

Goldberg has produced an excellent book explaining why Jews often think the way they do with regards to politics. Still, after explaining in minute detail, he fails to truly explain the power of false charges of anti-semetism. The most notorious example is that of the A.D.L. and their constant smear tactics of those who don't gobble down the Israeli party line. He has also failed to explain some of the criminal elements within that organization, tracing back many years now. Otherwise, the book is very solid. He should have tried to stop explaining away Jewish power in places where Jews carry unprecedented weight, especially when it comes to fund raising and race relations. If you can forgive this and his failure to cover the A.D.L. properly, it is a worthy read.

5 out of 5 stars An Ideal Read for a Book Club.......2006-02-28

This book really gets to the core of the influence of the Jewish community in America. It takes on topics that are explored in few other forums. Jewish Power is an ideal book for a bookclub made up of both Jews and non-Jews.

5 out of 5 stars "Inside the American Jewish Establishment".......2003-04-30

JEWISH POWER by obviously liberal journalist J. J. Goldberg describes the influence of America's Jewish community in influencing the US government. There are several problems with the book. It does not provide enough historical context and skims over some areas where Jews are either predominient (such as in Hollywood or textiles) or grossly represented out of proportion to the rest of the population (such as the mainstream media and Ivy League schools). Goldberg has a lot of ace to cover, and this is the type of book that might rile up that old demon "anti-Semitism" because it gives striking details on how much power the organized Jewish community wields (which includes Reform, Conservative and Orthodox synagouges plus the non-affiliated). But otherwise what Goldberg does say is worth the five stars. The vast majority of the book is about the ins-and-outs of Jewish 'alphabet soup' organizations, AIPAC's lobbying for Israel and its silencing of opponents, and a lengthy analysis of the conflicts between blacks and Jews from the mid-70s.

Jews form the most consistently liberal segment of the US population, and Democratic canidates for President have usually been able to command roughly 80% of the Jewish vote. One-half of the white civil rights leaders that went to the South were Jews, the NAACP was formed and directed by Jews into the mid-60s and Jews have been consistently leading the fight for "seperation of church and state" (i.e. demoralizing Christians). 50% of the Democratic party's money comes from Jewish contributers. This can be decieving, because the Jewish swing vote can influence elections, hence the Republican party also tries to drum up Jewish support, and 20% of Republican money comes from Jews. Although the section about Jews in the media is far too brief and cursory, it mentions the NEW YORK TIMES as being the front voice for current Jewish opinions (1/3 of the TIMES' readership is estimated as Jewish anyway) and 1/4 of major editors for news magazines are Jewish. As for the perennial rumors of Jews controlling the media and Hollywood in particular, consider this quote from page 280:

"And in a few key sectors of the media, notably among Hollywood studio executives, Jews are so numerically dominant that calling these businesses Jewish-controlled is little more than a statistical observation."

The most popular movement in America is what is called "Neoconservatism." Goldberg shows that the Neocon think tank was dominated from the start back in the sixties by ex-Marxists, most of whom were Jews. Aside for its disparaging of liberals and the media in general, it is basically a re-hash of Marxism popularized in the sixties, but made more efficient. Neoconservatives do not want to do away with the welfare state, but want to make it more efficient, and it is known as "kosher conservativism" because of its unconditional support for the State of Israel.

4 out of 5 stars Not So Powerful.......2002-09-05

Jewish Power was probably written in reaction to books about Israel and Jewish politics like They Dare to Speak Out which author J.J. Goldberg considers to be overwrought fantasies.

He gives his evidence showing that Jews do have considerable influence on politics, but not as much as Gentiles think and not as little as Jews think. He shows why he thinks that the Isreal and Jewish political organizations aren't that strong. He shows why many think that the American media is actually anti-Israel. He shows the fractiousness and disorganization of Jews in which they are just as quick call each other names as outsiders, which I suppose is presented to dispel speculations that the Jews are a united political force. However he does say that American Jews have been put under a lot of pressure to support Israel's policies no matter what and not criticize them.

The book is most interesting in the beginning and near the end. In the beginning, he talks about President Bush Sr.'s remark about being "up against powerful political forces" when he was trying to make peace in Israel. This was considered to be a shaded antisemitic statement that may have had an adverse effect on his last run for election given the Jewish swing vote and huge monetary contributions to elections. Half of the Democrat's campaign money for major elections come from such generosity and even a good deal of Republican's, Goldberg claims. Of course, this fact is not mentioned much since this fuels conspiracy theories.

The interesting part in the end is the one in which Goldberg explores the split between the blacks and Jews in the mid-seventies over affirmative action. The Jews were against quotas and the blacks were not; the blacks felt betrayed by the Jews and therefore betrayed them in kind since I think the blacks need quotas more than the Jews. He covers the anti-Semitism or the criticism against the Jews of black leaders such as Jesse Jackson, Leonard Jefferies, and Louis Farrakan.

Sometimes this book can be boring as the reader wades through the coverage of the myriad of Jewish alphabet soup organizations and their leaders along with special interest group legislation that they support. Since Goldberg's premise is that Jewish politics isn't terribly powerful, it does not have the sensational appeal of the muckraking exposes. It also would have been a more effective account if the author would have confronted some more of what other more critical books were saying, such as the claim that Israel's military attacked the our USS Liberty. I wasn't entirely convinced with his arguments, but he gave it his best shot.

                            5 out of 5 stars On etzer.......2002-04-12

I simply had to make a statement about etzer, because I found what he/she was saying incredibly disturbing. I believe that this person really needs to study the affects of abuse upon people. Abused people, unfortunately, often become major abusers themselves. Please rethink your thoughts on needing to have power and control over other people and your need to be "better" than other people. I think if you study your own history, tragically, you will find where this idea comes from. Please excuse my not reviewing this book properly.

The collaborators who put this book together are dedicated scientists with years of experience in the field. I admire their work. But I find on thing missing from the discussion of brain versus body size. They establish ratios of brain to body size and declare this is one method of measuring the intelligence of the animal, i.e. the larger the brain is in relationship to the body, the smarter the animal is. But they do not explain why a large body needs a large brain. After all, whale sharks of the same size as sperm whales have brains smaller than your fist while the sperm whale brain is six times larger than the human brain. Perhaps it is the large brain which requires the large body. The laws of physics would prohibit a brain developing in a very small body. Necks breaking and cortical sheering would be a problem.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Information.......2001-01-15

I have read through this book while doing some research on dolphins and marine mammal conservation and must say that this has some information that I could find nowhere else. This book hits on such a large variety of information relating to dolphin biology and conservation that I cannot believe that they fit it all into one book.
