Does a trip to the Maruba Resort & Jungle Spa in Belize sound appealing? Or the Grand Lido Sans Souci in Jamaica? How about the Breitenbush Hot Springs Retreat in Oregon, known as the "Esalen of the Northwest," with reiki, Thai massage, herbal wraps, hydrotherapy, and craniosacral therapy available to soothe your soul? Fodor's Healthy Escapes, here in its sixth edition, is your ticket to feeling pampered, healthy, and fit. Spas across the U.S. and the Caribbean are profiled, including facilities, services available, accommodations, rates, descriptions of atmosphere and typical meals, and directions.
Not every spa is geared toward solipsistic luxury; many offer hard-core conditioning programs for athletes in training or nutritional and lifestyle counseling for those struggling with cardiac disease, obesity, or other serious conditions. To help you find the retreat that best meets your needs, the editors have therefore separated them into six classifications: luxury pampering, nutrition and diet, sports conditioning, holistic health, medical wellness, and mineral springs. While many of the spas profiled here are pricey, keeping with what you'd expect from a Fodor's guide, some are more low key, such as Maine's Northern Pines Health Resort, which starts at $115 per person. Maps to help you locate the spas come in handy. The glossary is an added bonus, with definitions of healing modalities you may never have heard of (such as panchakarma), massage techniques (including shiroabhyanganasya), and schools of fitness (the increasingly popular Pilates Method). --Erica Jorgensen

Customer Reviews:
Best spa book ever!!.......2001-07-28
I can't tell you how often I have used this book in the year I've owned it. It describes every major spa in the US and Mexico so well. The categories is uses to classify are great. I've sent copies to several friends so we can plan getaways together. Even if you just want to fantasize about going to a spa, it's a great reference.
Fodor's Healthy Escapes.......2000-07-19
I purchased this book based on previous experience with Fodor's books. The categories were helpful for a quick determination of the type of facility. The descriptions however seemed more like advertisements from the various facilities rather than informed experiences from the writers. The rates were not up to date and there are no web sites listed. Unbelievable for a travel book published in 2000!

Customer Reviews:
Complete and well organized "healthy" vacation info.......1998-07-24
This was my first travel book. I wanted to find a vacation with structured outdoor activities where I could also keep up with my regular workout.
This book provides extensive information about many kinds of resorts and vacation programs. It is indexed by location as well as vacation/program type. It is very easy to compare one place to another. Each was described by a few free form paragraphs, followed by a list of specific info that was provided for every resort. Descriptions of the different programs were very useful. Pricing information seemed to be current (this year) and descriptions accurate when I contacted individual programs.
A minor detail, but this book is paperback, sized 5 by 9 inches. It was easy to carry around while I was deciding.
Some shortcomings are it has no photos - not one. It also doesn't list web sites, which many resorts now have. I used the book in conjunction with what I found on the web, so these inconveniences were minor.
This is a ! reference I will likely use for years to come.

Book Description
"Warmth and humor suffuse the story of Mara's senior-year transformation from tense, rigid perfectionist to relaxed, centered graduate. . . . Funny and optimistic." — KIRKUS REVIEWS
Mara Valentine is in control. She's a straight-A senior, a vegan, and her parents' pride and joy. She's neck-and-neck with her womanizing ex-boyfriend for number-one class ranking and plans to kick his salutatorian butt on her way out the door to Yale. Mara has her remaining months in Brockport all planned out, but the plan does not include having V, her slutty, pot-smoking, sixteen-year-old niece - yes, niece - come to live with her family. Nor does it involve lusting after her boss or dreaming about grilled cheese sandwiches every night. What does a control freak like Mara do when things start spinning wildly out of control? With insight, authenticity, and a healthy dose of humor, Carolyn Mackler creates an evolving Type A heroine that every reader will recognize - and root for.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous!.......2006-12-28
I loved this book!!! Carolyn Mackler's books are great, witty, and you get a good laugh while you're reading. I love happy endings and this one was great! V and Mara didn't get along at all at first but then near the end they came together. I also loved it when V and Mara kept each others secret from Mara's parents, even though they might have not gotten along they put trust in the other person. I was so happy for V and Mara when they both get something they deserved for their past conflicts. Like for V it was the school musical and for Mara it was James. All and all it was exciting book! Definitely check out The Earth, My Butt, and Other Big Round Things!
not award winning, but fun.......2006-09-11
Many of the reviews on this book talk about it in a negative light, some are well-worded, and others miss the "point" of the story completely. Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I feel that this book should have at least a few positive statements on it.
It's not a fantastic book, I've read better in this genre, and out of this genre there are better books, but I think for anybody who is just willing to sit back and escape their world for a while, it's a perfect book for that- which is what a book should be.
The story, as noted in other reviews is about a straight A high school student who, with the onset of her niece coming to live with her family and a new romantic relationship, is forced to re-evaluate why she wants to be valedictorian, and have enough college credits to begin college as a sophomore. It's your basic over-achiever who overcomes who she is "suppose" to be, to become who she really is.
There aren't any major revelations, when reading it, you know the course is inevitable and there aren't any major plot twists, but what makes the book entertaining is the language it's written in. It's not brilliant, but its a fast read, and fun- some parts can be laugh out loud funny if you're just willing to go along with it. I'd recommend it to anybody who just wants to sit back and be mildly amused for a few hours- not people looking for deeper meaning or characters with deep human complex emotions- what you get is on the page, and not a whole lot more, but I don't want my 4 hours back that it took to read it, so I feel like in the end, it was worth it.
no actual vegans were consulted in the writing of this book..........2006-09-02
I don't know what Carolyn Mackler's problem with veganism is, but she obviously has one.
This problem comes through almost like an agenda throughout the book. First of all, there's no way that a protagonist as intelligent as Mara wouldn't know why she didn't eat dairy and eggs as a vegan. (Eggs come from layer hens who are treated arguably worse than any other animal in today's modern factory farms; milk relies on separating a calf from its mother and sending the boy calves off for veal production, the other arguably worst agricultural practice today). Right away Mackler lost all credibility with me, there. No intelligent 17-year-old vegan would list her reason as: eggs come from a chicken's butt. Puh-leaze.
Then there's the oh-so-touching conversation with the mom in the car - But Mara, there is no right and wrong. Oh really? I'd love to have a discussion with Mackler about the philosophical and ethical implications of *that* statement.
Finally, Mara's "liberation" partly occurs when she orders cheese. I don't know, I guess I just wanted some, is her lame excuse.
There are ex-vegans out there (I'm wondering if Mackler is one), and many of them became vegans for half-baked reasons, or left veganism and then tried to justify it with a bunch of silly philosophies that they then prop up as much as possible. I've heard this before, as in, "I didn't want to be so rigid." I wonder if that's Mackler's thing.
But, speaking as a vegan, most of us don't dream of grilled cheese; we have actual reasons for not eating eggs and milk that you should look into by reading something like Peter Singer's "The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter", c) we do believe in the radical concept (!) that there might be right and wrong or at least more right and more wrong things to do in any given situation.
Mackler has done a real disservice to animals, the environment and herself by producing this pathetic tripe.
It's too bad, too, because otherwise the writing is not bad. It'd be great to see a story worth putting to paper in addition to her writing style.
At any rate, don't go into this book if you expect a main character with any kind of integrity and certainly don't go into it looking for anything to do with actual veganism, cause it ain't there.
neutral-no-more novel.......2006-08-14
Mara Valentine is an overachiever. In addition to being a virgin and a vegan, she's a straight-A student, and her parents "good" child. She has the rest of her senior year completely planned, from beating her ex-boyfriend for valedictorian to entering Yale as a second year student.
What Mara does not plan is the arrival of her sixteen-year-old niece, yes niece, to come and stay with she and her parents for a little while her mother jets off to Costa Rica. V, as her niece is a called, is a pot-smoking [...], and Mara wants nothing to do with her. What Mara also does not plan is dreaming about grilled cheese sandwiches and her twenty-two-year-old, un-college-educated boss. But soon Mara's plans start falling apart. Find out what happens to an overachiever who learns that there's more to life than overachieving in this novel that hits home for all high school students.
Great Book!.......2006-07-01
This book was rally good! The characters portrayed in the book are really realistic; one can relate being a teen in modern times. The way Mackler describes things is pretty accurate and subtle. It's a fun read and uses humor to make light of the akward situations many teens go through. I'd definitely recommend. it =)

Book Description
The nucleus guides the life processes of the cell by directing cellular reproduction, differentiation during development, and metabolism. The study of the structure and function of the nucleus along with its genetic material serves as the foundation for the science of genetics. Principles of Nuclear Structure and Function provides a comprehensive overview of the cell nucleus by illustrating the connection between function and the architecture of the nucleus.
Richly illustrated throughout, each chapter includes an overview, detailed examples, summary points, references, and callout boxes highlighting methods and cutting-edge technology. The appendix provides a useful list of related Web sites. Some of the subjects reviewed within Principles of Nuclear Structure and Function include:
* Nuclear structure, replication, damage, and repair
* Regulation of gene expression
* The cell cycle
* Meiosis and recombination
This timely volume presents functional studies within their proper structural context and is an informative profile of the cell and molecular biology in nuclei and chromatin. For those studying cell biology, along with molecular and cell biologists, geneticists, and reproductive biologists, Principles of Nuclear Structure and Function is a definitive resource.

Book Description
The phase transformation from liquid to solid is often tightly coupled with convective transport in the melt. Such coupled processes are significant on a broad range of scales.
Interactive Dynamics of
Convection and Solidification gives the first overview of the field as a whole. Both theoretical and experimental studies provide a fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms involved. On the microscale, there are discussions of morphological instabilities, their finite-amplitude evolutions, and the development of cells and dendrites. On the mesoscale, there are discussions of `developed' cells and dendrites, and of mushy zones. On the macroscale, there are discussions of full `systems' of solidifying/melting and convecting material. Here the influence of flow on crystal-growing processes, processing by beams, spin casting, macrosegregation in casting and geological systems, and energy conversion in engineering systems are all discussed.

Complete, but...........2006-03-26
This is indeed the most economical and yet complete collection of the "canon", but prbably for the sake of economy the quality of paper & printing have been severely compromised. Also, the font is very small and consequently makes the reading of these works a pain rather than a pleasure.
MOST Economical Complete Sherlock Holmes Fully Illustrated!!.......2003-09-18
I thought this is not complete Sherlock Holmes. I was wrong!! It has not only All 58 Strand Magazine version stories fully illustrated but also Two non-Strand Novels (non illustrated).
So, This is The MOST Economical Complete Sherlock Holmes Fully Illustrated!!!
Even if you have another version already, Must have this too!!

Book Description
Here, reproduced in complete facsimile, are the original Sherlock Homes detective stories as they first appeared in the famed 19th-century British magazine "The Strand." Illustrating the stories are drawings of Sidney Paget - illustrations as immortal as the stories themselves. Includes over 37 of Doyle's best suspense-filled short-stories plus the complete version of the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Customer Reviews:
Simply magnificent!.......2004-07-15
This book contains some of the greatest mystery stories the world has ever known. Throughout the book, through the eyes of Holmes' friend and assistant Watson, who recalls the things he sees and hears while in his friends company. This book also features illustrations that create a further interest in the story itself. Doyle shows his genious by leading the reader throughout each story (while successfully hooking them) and providing them with all the necessary clues to solve it. Of course none of it ever ties up in your mind which further compells you to read on faster and faster. When always at the very end, you see how Sherlock's genious (kindly provided by Doyle's genious) ties everything together very effectively by using the famous deducted theory which was concocted by Doyle and is used in every single Sherlock Holmes novel/story. This is a fabulous book and it will make you thirst for more. This is not a book to pass up!
Elementary, my dear reader..........2003-07-13
The first Sherlock Holmes book I ever read was given to me as a gift for my thirteenth birthday. It was a collection of the short stories, with a wonderful leather trim and gold leafing, and I thought it was fantastic. I read the first story, and was instantly hooked. Within a few days, I was disappointed with my wonderful new book because it was incomplete. I had devoured all of the selected stories, and was ready for more.
Shortly thereafter, I purchased what purported to be the 'only complete Sherlock Holmes available', compiled by Christopher Morley. This became my favourite book. But, alas, neither of these volumes was illustrated.
The original stories, which appeared in The Strand magazine, were illustrated, by the great illustrator Sidney Paget. Actually, careful research (which Holmes himself would insist upon) will reveal that Paget was not the first illustrator; however, it is not able to be determined conclusively how many artists preceding Paget. It is know that the first publication of A Study in Scarlet, in which Holmes and Watson are first introduced, was illustrated by on D.H. Friston. These illustrations would appall the Holmesian set today.
The next edition after the barely-received Beeton's Christmas Annual edition, was in book form, and apparently illustrated by Arthur Conan Doyle's father, Charles.
The next illustration was in The Sign of Four, appearing in Lippincott's Magazine, which showed a scene in India, but did not have one of Holmes.
The classic ideas of Holmes (in a visual sense) did not thus solidify until the popular series of short stories in The Strand, illustrated by Paget, beginning with the story A Scandal in Bohemia, in which Holmes is actually out-foxed by THE woman, but still manages a satisfactory ending to the case, and (particularly his illustrations of the serialised Hounds of the Baskervilles) Paget's illustrations have become the standard image.
This volume contains all the short stories (56 of them) and the novels (4). (At least, this is the official canon -- there are other proto-stories by Conan Doyle, and dozens of tribute stories written by other authors.) Hundreds of illustrations accompany the text. Perhaps Paget drew his image of Holmes based upon the actor William Gillette, who made a career out of portraying the Baker Street detective on stage in London and New York. Charlie Chaplain got one of his early starts in entertainment by playing the page attendant to Holmes opposite Gillette.
From the beginning introduction of Holmes and Watson to Holmes' gentle retirement to beekeepping on the southern coast of England, this book contains all the essential stories (none of the apocryphal, anecdotal, or tribute-written pieces are contained here). Holmes was often thought to be a real person, and Sherlockians the world over still search for 'evidence' to prove that he was. During his 'lifetime', the post office for the Baker Street area regularly received mail addressed to Holmes or Watson at 221B Baker Street. While such an address does not (and did not during the late Victorian era) exist, there is a business on the site that would be 221B, and they have dedicated a desk to Holmes, and strive to answer mail received in the great detective's name.
Perhaps the two elements that made Holmes and Watson the world-renowned figures that they became are, first, the dominance of the British Empire globally at the time Conan Doyle was writing, which made English things sought-after, admired, and to be emulated, and secondly, the introduction of a method of detection hitherto unknown, both in the annals of detective stories (save perhaps in a proto-form in Poe and a few other obscure pieces of dubious literary merit) and in real life.
Holmesian tales became required reading in the training of police and detectives in many parts of the world. It is still recommended even when it is not required.
Holmes permeates other literature and venues as well. When Data on Star Trek: The Next Generation looks for images of Holmes, he is being guided by the descriptions in the stories as well as by the illustrations in The Strand. When the BBC produced Jeremy Brett's rendering of Holmes, the same holds true. When Basil Rathbone's films were cast, these illustrations and stories were uppermost in the directors' minds.
So, pull some tobacco from your persian slipper, stoke your pipe, scratch out a tune on your violin, and re-enter the gas-lit world of the foggy London, where danger is afoot and one detective can always save the day.
Illustrations are a great enhancement to the experience........2001-12-26
I've read most to these adventures over 30 years ago when I was a young teenager. I enjoyed them immensely then.
Now that I'm reading these stories again, the illustrations do enhance the stories greatly and adds more depth and understanding to the era in which these stories were written.
Although these stories are dated, some having been written over a hundred years ago and from the technological advances in criminology today, the suspense and pace of these stories will keep you glued until you get to the end of the mystery.
This book is well worth the expense and will be a fine addition to the collection of any Sherlock Holmes fan.
A great, and well-priced, addition to your collection.......1998-07-02
If you're a Holmes fan, this book will make a great addition to your collection: it reproduces the original illustrations created by Sydney Paget for the stories in Strand Magazine. (But it's not the "complete" Sherlock Holmes -- some of the stories were published elsewhere.) Paget was originally a fashion illustrator, hired by mistake for his brother Walter who specialized in adventure stories -- but the Holmes tales brought out the best in Sydney. While some of the pictures are merely dutiful scene-setting, others are exciting enhancements of the story (cf. the Hound of the Baskervilles!). In any case, the pictures are a good corrective for the cartoonish Holmes and Watson depicted in dozens of Hollywood epics: they're a pair of active, well-dressed young men, not the scarecrow and his doddering sidekick. (The TV series with Jeremy Brett got this right, although it made a botch of some of the plots.) And I enjoyed the glimpses they give you into the world of Victorian society -- the interiors of elegant living rooms and hansom cabs, ladies' at-home dresses, tea-trays and decanters. At this price, you can't afford to pass it up!
As good as ever.......1998-04-10
This fine volume has the original illustrations of Sydney Paget and Arthur Conan Doyle's stories as they originally appeared in The Strand magazine a century ago. The adventures and pictures are as thrilling as ever, while the mysteries Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson tackle have lost none of their allure. These are most enjoyable tales, full of intrigue that will arouse the reader's curiosity, and this particular edition is nicely complemented by Paget's fine illustrations.

Product Description
The ascetic, gaunt & enigmatic detective, Sherlock Holmes, made his first appearance in A Study in Scarlet. From 1891, beginning with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the now legendary & pioneering Strand Magazine began serializing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's matchless tales of detection, featuring the incomparable sleuth patiently assisted by his doggedly loyal & lovably pedantic friend & companion, Dr. Watson. The stories are illustrated by the remarkable Sydney Paget from whom our images of Sherlock Holmes & his world derive & who first equipped Holmes with his famous deerstalker hat.
