more useful information needed.......2007-03-08
Would like to have seen more blurbs on the side bars about what to pack and more stories, legends and history to tell the kids. There were some, but needs to be more. Also, would like to see a more eye appealing layout that perhaps kids would be able to follow along w/ while in ireland.

He talked, I listened. As I tried to appear interested, I thought that even Mojo was more interested in what I had to say. And he's a dog.
Theresa Joanne (T. J. to her friends) is having a difficult year. First her best friend moves away. Then there's the problem with boys: They never seem to notice that she's a girl. But when Lucy befriends T. J., things start to look up. But will Lucy's best friends Nesta and Izzie accept her and let her into their world of sleepovers, secrets, laughter, and advice?

Mates, Dates, and Sleepover Secrets.......2007-03-02
Honestly, this book isn't really my style. It's a bit younger than I'm used to, and I think it'd be better for preteens about eleven (a very mature eleven) twelve and thirteen years old, who aren't ready for a full-out sex drugs and rock n' roll teen book. It was very light and cute, but honestly I can hardly remember what happened. It was just forgetable, and not really something to pick up for exciting memorable reading.
Now if you're looking for something quick and fluffy, I'd say go right ahead. ;)
really good series!!!.......2005-06-14
This is the 4th Mates, Dates book. T.J.'s best friend Hanna just moved away and T.J. is all lonely. She becomes friends with Lucy and gets along with Izzie and Nesta too. T.J. has never had a boyfriend cuz all of the boys think of her as one of them and not as a girl. Her friends decide to do a makeover for her to get the attention the boy who lives next to her cuz she has a crush on him. Once she goes out with him she realizes something. To find out about what happens to her, read this series!!
Great BOOK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-01-03
This book was awesome i read it in 3 hours it was so good i could'nt put it down i have read seven of the books in the series and i can'nt wait till she comes out with more. I like the books so much because i can releate to them and they are just written so good. I like how the author has a differnt narrotor every book that is the best part.
An amazing book your Tween/Teen will enjoy!!!.......2004-11-14
I remember for my 14 year old B-Day,my mother hooked me up with this book, the 1st one I read of the series.I love how its centered on 1 character and her problem, kind of like a tv show.I like the ocasional refrence of cussing or sex.Unlike Madison Finn Books,The Mates Dates Series is a good read of how you might want to deal with your problems in life or,a good light read. And if you want you child or yourself to get hooked, start off with Mates Dates, and Sleepover Secrets, and great way to get to know how all the four girls are!!!!
Still Good.......2004-08-25
I love this whole series! This particular book was not my favorite though. It seemed to go in a different direction, but it was still pretty good. I like that they introduced a new character to liven things up again. If you want a light read, buy this book. These books have a good lesson in the end as well. Have some fun and read all the books in the Mates, Dates Series!

Love all of them!.......2006-07-14
The first 4 books from the series are the best! Buy them!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent series for young teens.......2006-05-11
As i bookseller with specialty in kids and teens, I must really give this series the "thumbs up"!
They are great "light reading", but with substantial contents for their target group. A series with all the right messages - trust in yourself, value your good friendships, be your own person, don't succumb to group pressure etc. BUT they are not annoyingly politically correct, and they are written in a way that will appeal to most age 11-14 girls.
They deal with friendships, first loves, puberty, parents, siblings, school and issues like 'what am I good at' and 'what do I want to be professionally' etc.
The first 6 books are narrated by 4 different girls (who are all friends), which gives a good insight to how different girls in a group see, react towards and percieve the various situations and issues.
Reading "guidelines":
The first five books are good from age 11 and up, from book six the girls mature somewhat and, depending on the individual of course, readers should be a year or two older.
Love These!.......2006-04-15
Cathy Hopkins is wonderful. These books are really good. Designer Divas is my favorite. I love Lucy, Nesta, and Toby. I could read these all day! They're awesome! Almost as good as Jacquline Wilson. Read them NOW! I order you : )!
They rock!

Cathy Hopkins books are the BEST but my personal favorites are the mates dates books. I would recomend them to all girls!!! Shes a very talented writer and i believe that every one should read them. They have a resonable amount of pages (the averge amount is around 200) Once you start reading them you wont want to put it down!

Book Description
This new volume addresses the use of FTIR spectroscopy in characterizing the molecular structure of aggregates such as micelles and bilayers, and in studying interfaces and surfaces modified by the presence of polymers and amphiphilic molecules. An overview chapter reviews the wide range of
colloidal systems and interfaces that can be studied by FTIR spectroscopy. Subsequent chapters are divided into two sections that address colloidal aggregates and interfacial phenomena. The first section demonstrates how FTIR spectroscopy is used to obtain information about the intermolecular
interactions that are critical to the integrity of micelles and bilayers. Section two focuses on the use of FTIR spectroscopy to study adsorption kinetics and the structure of film and layers on various substrates.

Book Description
Progress in the theory of economic equilibria and in game threory has proceeded hand in hand with that of the mathematical tools used in the field, namely nonlinear analysis and, in particular, convex analysis. Jean-Pierre Aubin, one of the leading specialists in nonlinear analysis and its application to economics, has written a rigorous and concise - yet still elementary and self-contained - textbook providing the mathematical tools needed to study optima and equilibria, as solutions to problems, arising in economics, management sciences, operations research, cooperative and non-cooperative games, fuzzy games etc. It begins with the foundations of optimization theory, and mathematical programming, and in particular convex and nonsmooth analysis. Nonlinear analysis is then presented, first game-theoretically, then in the framework of set valued analysis. These results are then applied to the main classes of economic equilibria. The text continues with game theory, non-cooperative (Nash) equilibria, Pareto optima, core and finally some fuzzy game theory. The book closes with numerous exercises and problems: the latter allow the reader to venture into areas of nonlinear analysis that lie beyond the scope of the book and of most courses.

Great thinker and writer.......2007-08-14
Vine Deloria has written another outstanding book about Native subjects that is both original and intelligent. I have been guided by his thinking in this book and have used it for my upcoming book, The Odawa and Smallpox Genocide (Edwin Mellon Press). He is sadly missed, since he walked on.
Red Earth, White Lies: Native Americans and the Myth of Scientific Fact.......2007-01-12
A must read for anyone chasing their Native Heritage and regular readers as well.Vine Deloria is a renowned author and this book is his best.
An outstanding work on the fallacies of science.......2006-05-28
Deloria makes a very well-researched, well-argued and, ultimately, correct case against the delusion of modern science as applied to evolution. Modern science has done wonders for technology, not necessarily for the earth or the environment; however, it does not explain the past very well, especially the distant past.
The third chapter, 'Evolutionary Prejudice,' is, arguably, the hinge upon which his arguments rest. It is amazing that regardless of whether or not a Western person uses religion, science, or socio-political arguments the "indigenous" people always end up on the bottom. Another great work that supports this theory is by the noted author Stephen Jay Gould in "The Mismeasure of Man." Further support is given by Roy Harvey Pearce in "Savagism and Civilization." To get more proof, read works directly related to the time Western imperialism encountered the Inupiat, Inuit, Aboriginies, and other "indigenous" people around the world, their prejudism shines through. The book I have sitting in front of me, "Primitive Man," written by Edward Clodd is a glaring example of the paradigm through which the world was catagorized by scientists.
All in all, Deloria is not only an eloquent and witty writer, he is correct in questioning the validity of science as applied to "indigenous" people, evolutionary theory, and the origins of people.
Apropos to this argument is this recent article: http://www.mercurynews.com/ci_6414554?source=most_viewed. Evolutionary science is a belief that cannot be empirically proven. One can make suppositions of fact based on paradigm, but, in the end, that is all they are, guesses.
Attack on a Straw Man.......2005-07-23
An earlier reviewer, Deloria's former student, maintains that this book is not a harbinger of fundamentalism encroaching on new territory, but rather an critique of faulty science. On the contrary, the book itself demonstrates that Deloria does not understand the science he seeks to criticise, using exactly the same specious pseudo-scientific fallacies & sophistries employed with such amazing frequency by Christian creationists. Deloria does not grapple with any of the mature forms of Neo-Darwinian synthesis that constitute present-day biology. Simple test: Look at the index. While Stephen Jay Gould is referenced sixteen times, & Darwin ten, seminal figures such as J.B.S. Haldane, E.O. Wilson, Richard Dawkins, R.A. Fisher, William Hamilton, Robert Trivers, or John Manyard Smith exacly zero. He is 'ripping to shreds' a straw man that the scientists he intends to discredit dismantled long before he got around to it.
Like Deloria's student, I think it wise to keep a distance from wrangling over accusations of fundamentalism or racism, & concentrate instead on Deloria's misapprehension of what science says, & at bottom, is. Rather than futilely kicking against the pricks in a short review such as this, however, I recommend instead that all who are interested in exploring the matter with intellectual integrity read Richard Dawkins, a congenial popularizer, Philip Kitcher (particularly his book *Abusing Science*), a philosopher of science who tackles old-school creationism, & *Intelligent Design Creationism and Its Critics* (ed. Robert T. Pennock), which counters the new facade of creationsim (used by Deloria), so-called Intelligent Design.
Better yet, have a look at this thorough Amazon So You'd Like To. . . list: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/guides/guide-display/-/1ZVZDKO9Z0ETC/ref=cm_bg_dp_m_2/002-6368276-0565648
One final note. Many people fail to comprehend the meaning of the word 'theory' as it is used within the context of the scientific method. A scientific theory is not some gauzy idea that awaits experimental validation. That is an *hypothesis*. A theory, in the language of science, is a statement of scientific fact that has been subjected to the most rigorous possible experimentation & not been falsified. This differs from the colloquial understanding of the word 'theory'. It is a simple matter of definition that anybody who intends to discuss this issue seriously must grasp. If one doesn't know it one can have no conception of the scientific method, hence rational criticism of it becomes impossible.
Stick to sociology, Deloria.......2005-01-01
Vine Deloria should stick to American Indian history, sociology, current affairs, etc.
If Deloria were a Christian fundamentalist spewing his ignorance as a "native alternative" to science (not Western science, but science), he'd be slapped silly by everybody in academe and beyond, except at a few fundamentalist schools.
BUUTTT... because he's the "great Vine Deloria," along with white liberal guilt, etc., this attack on scientific thinking gets treated with kid gloves at the least and put on a pedestal at the worst.
Deloria, don't go to a "Western" hospital for "Western" scientific medicine next time you get sick. Or does the "myth of scientific fact" not include you going to a Western medicine hospital for an aortic aneurysm not too long before you died?
I guess it turns out we're past the shelf date for that advice to be of any value, to be somewhat but not too snarky.

Book Description
Antonio Stradivari (1644—1737) was a perfectionist whose single-minded pursuit of excellence changed the world of music. In the course of his long career in the northern Italian city of Cremona, he created more than a thousand stringed instruments; approximately six hundred survive, their quality unequalled by any subsequent violin-maker. In this fascinating book, Toby Faber traces the rich, multilayered stories of six of these peerless creations–five violins and a cello–and the one towering artist who brought them into being. Blending history, biography, meticulous detective work, and an abiding passion for music, Faber takes us from the salons of Vienna to the concert halls of New York, and from the breakthroughs of Beethoven’s last quartets to the first phonographic recordings. This magnificent narrative invites us to share the life, the intrigue, and the incomparable beauty of the world’s most marvelous stringed instruments.
Customer Reviews:
History Paralleling Art & Craftsmanship.......2006-06-24
I was out the other week searching for new books to read and came across Stradivari's Violins. A self-avowed classical music fan, I started leafing through the pages to see if the book would spark my interest. Well, a day and a half later and the book was completed, leaving me wanting for more! An outstanding read, the book chronicles the birth and subsequent history of five violins and one cello, over the course of time and history. If you are interested at all in history, music history, classical prose, or any genre in the history/music categories, this book would be a great read. It appeals to a large audience I think, and for fans of the movie the Red Violin, this book would make a great companion piece, although that movie was about a violin not covered within the pages, the Red Mendelssohn. Now in paperback, this book is definitely a bargain!
the genius of mr faber.......2006-04-28
this book is a must for all music lovers. it is factual without being boring and mr faber does a great job telling his story. i couldn't put i down and i don't even play an instrument. a great read!
Stradivari was great, but don't forget Guarneri.......2005-12-14
I have no disagreement with the genius of Stradivari or the excellent qualities of his extraordinary violins and other stringed instruments. However it should not be overlooked that Stradivari was not entirely unique: equally fine instruments were made in Cremona at about the same time by Giuseppi Antonio Guarneri. In fact, many famous virtuoso violinists have chosen to play Guarnerius rather than Stradivarius violins, a fact not generally known to the public. At one time Polish virtuoso Henryk Szeryng owned two Stradivarius and one Guarnerius violins. Eventually, he donated the two Strads to worthy musical institutions and kept only the Guarnerius. Szeryng treasured his Guarnerius so much that, when he travelled, he bought two seats -- one for himself and one for his Guarnerius.
The mystery behind the greatness of Stradivarius violins is actually a somewhat broader mystery: How did Cremona Italy in the late 17th and early-to-mid 18th centuries produce two artisans who made the greatest violins ever made? And why did this artistry end when they died?
Interesting - but could be more so........2005-08-12
An interesting book which gives a brief history of the famous insturments made by Stradivari. The book then follows five specific insturments from their creation to present time. The book also gives a good look at the development of the violin, from its inception to its current configuration. Those, like me, who are unfamiliar with this history will find it interesting. I only find two problems with the book. Much of it reads likle an overdone book report from someone who did not enjoy their topic. While there are many interesting tidbits here and there, few of them are developed in a way to make them interesting, and may be missed completely if the reader is not careful. The only other fault I find in the book is that I would have like to have seen photographs of the five insturments in question, and in color. The book of refers to specific details of these insturments, including the color of the varnish used, and photographs would aid the reader greatly.
The Intrigue & Fame of A Stradivari.......2005-06-08
One of the fun things for this reader is to search the New Non-Fiction Display at my favorite bookseller. There I look for the fascinating work that is not one of my areas of interest, e.g. recently I have found three such of these: Bobby Fischer Goes to War; An Imperfect God: George Washington's Slaves & The Creation of America; and now this fascinating work on the infamous violin maker.
What strikes one about this attempt to probe this mysterious violin giant is that the mystery like so many remains unsolved. How did he manage to create instruments that no one has been able to duplicate to date? The angles, the varnish, the wood, the maturation. They all continue to be analyzed. Even all the modern technology hasn't been able to understand nor exceed this Italian craftman's abilities.
Faber, a young violinist once, becomes intrigued with the mystery after reading about the contention over the possible forgery of "The Messiah," Strad's most popular instrument. So he begins looking at this man from Cremona, Italy and tracing six of his instruments, and their players, their owners, their trading.
So the epicenter of the stringed instrument world has shifted from Italy to Paris to London to NY City. Could the Third World be next. Authenticity for buyers becomes solely word of expert analysis and insight. Millions paid for one Strad.
Most readers will be exposed to giants of the stringed instrument world that they never have known, such as Davidov, Lipinski, Bohm, Marie Hall, Tarisio, et al. Strads go through many players that many will recognize, e.g. Yo-Yo Ma, Paganini, du Pre, etc.
This is really a most interesting journey through one of the most popular musical instrumnet and its genius maker. Faber pokes and probes this mystery from many angles and views, leaving much of this intrigue an open question, but not forsaking his research conclusions.
Great appendices with a useful glossary, chronology, exhange rate analysis.
A wonderful, enlightening read.

Book Description
This is the dramatic story of the most crucial year in the history of the American West, 1876, when the wars between the United States Government and the Indian Nations reached a peak. Telling a great deal about Indian cultures, history, beliefs and personality, this is the first book to cover the whole year, rather than simply its components. 16-page photo insert. 3 maps.

Excelent reading!!.......2003-03-29
I have read several books about the Sioux Wars so i wasnt really sure i wanted to read another one, but Mr Robinson's book is fantastic. He writes taking in consideration that the reader doesnt know anything about the topic so he explains with good accuracy terms and places like no other author. The author is bold and right on the money when it comes to point a finger at somebody, like for example the stupidity of the Army officers.I found that the interviews and research the author made for this book are very good, especially from the indians perspective. The only thing i didnt like is the fact that Mr Robinson doesnt go into details when it comes to Crazy Horse.I would have loved to read more about Crazy Horse part in this Wars.Otherwise this is an excelente book!
An excellent recounting.......2001-05-03
This is by far the best book on the Army's conflict with Native Americans since "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee". It treats the material as a campaign rather than a series of seperate battles, so that Little Big Horn is treated as part of a whole. The author also describes the personalities and deeds of several Indian characters, not just Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse. This is an eye-opening recounting of an important part of US history and a look at one of the greatest guerilla forces ever to wage war against the American Army.
a first rate overview of the Sioux War of 1876.......1999-06-01
Rather than concentrate on one battle or campaign, Robinson sets the stage for the reader to follow the movement of all the actors playing a role in the drama across the seasons of the war. I used this book as an orientation to the conflicts of 1876 prior to a trip to Wyoming, Montana and the Dakotas to visit battle sites while on vacation. My trip was greatly enriched by reading this volume first. You can find more concentrated studies of particular engagements and the biographies of the participants that will offer deeper insights into the war, but for one overall narrative that provides the reader with the flavor of the contemporary army and Indian experience, here's my choice.
Best depiction of the battle of the Little Big Horn I've rea.......1998-09-14
The depiction of the Battle of the Little Big Horn, especially that based on eye-witness accounts is riveting. It shows how different this battle was for the Lakota from the type of fighting they were used to, and what a feat it was for Crazy Horse to have pulled them together to fight in the manner of the white men, even if it was for one time only. The feeling I came away with was that Custet had learned the style in which indians fought, just in time for Crazy Horse to learn to fight like the Cavalry. Both were brilliant military minds.

Book Description
In the past decade, China was able to carry out economic reform without political reform, while the Soviet Union attempted the opposite strategy. How did China succeed at economic market reform without changing communist rule? Susan Shirk shows that Chinese communist political institutions are more flexible and less centralized than their Soviet counterparts were.
Shirk pioneers a rational choice institutional approach to analyze policy-making in a non-democratic authoritarian country and to explain the history of Chinese market reforms from 1979 to the present. Drawing on extensive interviews with high-level Chinese officials, she pieces together detailed histories of economic reform policy decisions and shows how the political logic of Chinese communist institutions shaped those decisions.
Combining theoretical ambition with the flavor of on-the-ground policy-making in Beijing, this book is a major contribution to the study of reform in China and other communist countries.

Great Basin Riparian Ecosystems: Ecology, Management, and Restoration (The Science and Practice of Ecological Restoration Series)
ASIN: 0292702485 |
Book Description
"I am not aware of any other books that cover both the subject matter and geographical area of this book. . . . [Its] extensive references and detailed summaries provide a wealth of information for those interested in wetland management and ecology in the western United States."
Michael Freehling, Zoologist, New Mexico Natural Heritage Program, University of New Mexico
Wetlands and riparian areas between the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada are incredibly diverse and valuable habitats. More than 80 percent of the wildlife species in this intermountain region depend on these wetlandswhich account for less than 2 percent of the land areafor their survival. At the same time, the wetlands also serve the water needs of ranchers and farmers, recreationists, vacation communities, and cities. It is no exaggeration to call water the "liquid gold" of the West, and the burgeoning human demands on this scarce resource make it imperative to understand and properly manage the wetlands and riverine areas of the Intermountain West.
This book offers land managers, biologists, and research scientists a state-of-the-art survey of the ecology and management practices of wetland and riparian areas in the Intermountain West. Twelve articles examine such diverse issues as laws and regulations affecting these habitats, the unique physiographic features of the region, the importance of wetlands and riparian areas to fish, wildlife, and livestock, the ecological function of these areas, their value to humans, and the methods to evaluate these habitats. The authors also address the human impacts on the land from urban and suburban development, mining, grazing, energy extraction, recreation, water diversions, and timber harvesting and suggest ways to mitigate such impacts.
