Great Guide!.......2001-09-14

This is the best travel guide I have ever read. It tells you the ins outs and inbetweens of every place you planned on, and never thought of, seeing in a major city. It gives great details on well known and hidden restaurants, the prices, the cuisine, and how good the taste is. I highly recommend any Frommer's guide. I bought the San Fransisco edition and found it so great I bought the Chicago edition for when I am at home. Frommer guides are a must have for a city you live in or near, and a city you are visiting.

Excellent guide to Chicago.......2001-08-23

The author of Frommer's Chicago 2001, Craig Keller, has been a journalist in Chicago for more than a decade. As such, he is very familiar with the area, and he is an excellent writer, which makes the book easy to read.

This 321-page guide has an excellent index and table of contents. It is filled with photos and is well laid out with color-coded margins to help you thumb to the different sections. These include: (1) The Best of Chicago: the best among Chicago's hotels, restaurants and entertainment experiences. (2) Planning your trip to Chicago: suggestions on when to go to Chicago, an annual calendar of Chicago events, tips for travelers with special needs, means of getting to Chicago, and information on O'Hare Airport. (3) Advice for Foreign Visitors: information for non-U.S. citizens with a summing-up section called Fast Facts. (4) Orientation to Chicago: information on the Chicago River, ethnic neighborhoods, and public transportation. (5) Where to Stay: types of accommodations in all the major segments of town. (6) Where to Dine: restaurants listed by area of town, type of food, and cost. (7) Exploring Chicago: the sights in Chicago that tourists like to see. Good overview of whats available in Chicago.......2001-06-04

I went on a 4 day trip to Chicago and found the information in the book to be fairly reliable and covered most areas of interest. The strong points were reviews of hotels (I booked before reading this guide) and it correctly advised that the Allegro is a good hotel. Also good were overviews of the main neighbourhoods near the loop. Things I wanted to know while I was there and couldn't find in the guide were details of shops that sold electronic goods and locations of internet cafes. The book had some strange errors including a colour picture page labelled as Wrigley park which in fact is Comiskey Park.

Honest and engrossing.......2006-02-25

Fans of Brian James's books are not drawn to his writing for its evocative and intricate sentence structure, or for the promise of a complex story arc with completely original characters. You won't find either of those things in James's work. Instead, what you will find is a staccato, ragged telling of an everyday character and his or her everyday problems that spills into a narrative so emotionally raw and uncomfortably powerful that you can't help but feel changed by reading it.

His latest, DIRTY LIAR, traverses much of the same territory that his previous novels do --- love, heartache, drug usage, alienation and feeling misunderstood, familial dysfunction --- but, as with all writers who capitalize on their own familiar subject matters, he travels the terrain well. Again, it is not so much what James writes about, but how he does it that will endear readers to the story.

At first, Benji seems like the typical "un-cool" teenage boy --- reserved, eyes downcast, closed off to the world. He wears his long hair in front of his face to hide his eyes and his clothes are scruffy, non-descript and neutral. His one close friend, Sean, appears to want to spend time with him (at least he doesn't ignore him), while the others at school are content to let him blend unnoticed into their scenery. There's even a girl at school he likes from afar, Rianna, who pays no attention to him until the day she does, which makes the plot thicken, if only predictably so in that misunderstood-boy-gets-saved-by-the-popular-girl-who-suddenly-decides-to-talk-to-him way.

What makes Benji's story different is his mother's drinking and her boyfriend's verbally and sexually abusive behavior; his father's cold disapproval of him despite his stepmother's weak attempts to bring the family together; and his incessant talk of demons that threaten to squash any form of self-confidence he might have had before the divorce, before the move to Portland to live with his father, and before the moment when he became so disgusted with being alive. What makes Benji's struggle so authentic is the way his thoughts are constantly racing and so glaringly honest; the way his self-awareness is so fragile and mutable; and the fact that deep down, he truly wants his life to get better, despite his inability to get past the hate and fear that he feels on a day-to-day basis.

It is clear from his no-holds-barred portrayal of Benji's self-loathing and intense distrust of those around him that James is no stranger to the world of teen angst. Although some of the scenes he describes are a tad too melodramatic or contrived to be believable, his unrelenting push to get all of the messy and vulnerable moments that come with being a teenager down on the page is what makes the book worthwhile. He deals with sexual abuse with a creepy candor that will surely make readers' skin crawl, but some may argue that the appeal of the book is exactly the frankness with which he deals with taboo subjects. All in all, an engrossing read to add to your collection.

Excellent Resource.......2003-07-07

I was attracted to the clear photographs and the concise information in this book. This is an excellent reference with a collection of the major finds in Europe. As a student I would read about a find in an article. With this book I was able to quickly look the fossils up. This book allows the reader to either become familiar with certain remains or gain specific information about bone dimensions. Either way, this book will prove to be an important part of any physical anthropologist's library for years to come. It is certainly worth the investment.

If you are looking for specific instruction on how to get started in these crafts, or you are trying to enhance your technique, this book is not for you. It is highly historical and gives scanty direction. Judging by other books I have read, the history isn't even that good.

This is a sweet little bit of nonsense from London designer Lulu Guinness (the ultimate girl's girl) who has put together a collection of her favourite bon mots with lots of very, very pretty pictures.

Most of the sayings are nothing new ("use your imagination, trust your instincts and follow your dreams") but they're inspiring and uplifting in this format just the same... ("sometimes a well dressed man is the best accessory").

The 'character' in the book, Lulu, is fictional but based on Guinness herself and is very likeable with her cherry red lips and brunette beauty. She elegantly flits from page to page in a delightful whirl of lilac (one of Guinness's signature colours), roses, high heels and pearls taking us from boudoir to dressing room to work, boutique, fantasy land, cocktail lounge and back.

While it's light on text (the word count is about 2000 tops!) Martin Welch's illustrations are enchanting and the pop up bits will appeal to everyone's inner child.

Isn't this all a bit silly in a book aimed at sophisticated women of style? Of course it is but that's half the fun! With its minimal text this is a perfect treat to dip in and out of when you are feeling a bit blue or blah. Pour yourself a nice cool drink, put your feed up and indulge in a bit of Guinness's aesthetic, wit and whimsy.

The book includes a charming foreward by the British actor Helena Bonham Carter, has a double page spread (in red of course) dedicated to the great Diana Vreeland and includes a refreshing 12 style suggestion list which includes;

- Money doesn't equal style
- If you're feeeling fat why not shop for accessories
- Carry bags of personality
- Less can be more but sometimes more is more
- You CAN be too rich or too thin

One to buy for your 'inspiration library' or for a friend/daughter/mother who needs a little bit of cheering up and reminding of what fun it is being a woman.

For an American take on similar themes have a look at Kate Spade's Style - it's just as pretty and a bit heavier on content.

Forgive my paraphrasing of the wondrous line spoken by Elaine Stritch in Sondheim's "Company." But, DOES anyeone still wear pearls? Thankfully, I did not buy this book, but I've had a look at it in stores. Why do c-list fashionista's like this get published? Best thing, girls, is to go out and just put on whatever makes you feel sexy. Plain and simple.

I love reading about fashion, but this book left me wanting a lot more. If you want to read a great book about fashion read Brenda Reiten Kinsel's book titled 40 0ver 40.

I surely do wish I'd never bought this book. As another reviewer said, it's worthless if you come to it expecting to read anything useful. ALl you get are very charming illustrations and a few pop up pages and Lulu Guiness's favorite sayings. That's it. If you have a bunch of Guiness bags and love Lulu then go right ahead and buy it. The rest of us would be better off checking it out of the library. I intend to return my copy.

Marvellous! Don't miss it!.......2006-05-09

F-117A Nighthawk was the pioneer of the modern series of stealth fighters and bombers and its performance during the Gulf War of 1991 was excellent. Jon Lake gives many details about the development of the aircraft, the years of absolute secrecy at Tonopah, the strike in Panama, the deployment to Saudi Arabia, the operations there and analyzes every system and technological innovation used in this type. The photographs are superb but the strongest point of the book is that it does not hide the many weaknesses of the F-117A (the chapter about laser lock on the targets and its problems was astonishing!) and it also contains a chapter about other versions of the F-117 and newer stealth types like F-22 and B-2. A real gem for the aircraft enthusiast and it is a pity that this series stopped after publishing a few titles.

MiG- 29 Soviet Superfighter (Osprey publishing).......2000-09-27

I am a military aviation enthusiast and take keen interest in Russian fighters, especially MiG-29. MiG-29 caught my fancy ever since these a/c were inducted into Indian Air Force. Incidentally one of my friend is widely acknowledged to be one of the pioneers of MiG- 29s in India. He specialises in aerobatice. I have read janes how to fly and fight in F-117 Staelth fighter. I have seen a documentary on this a/c on Discovery channel. This is really a great a/c. I remember how it performed in Gulf war and was appropriately named BAGHDAD EXPRESS. One book which I long to possess is Janes how to fly and fight in Mikoyan MiG-29 Fulcrum. But unfortunately this book is not available in India. Kindly suggest how to procure this book. In all stealth fighter book, from my opinion, I think this is the best overall I have read. The book has got great pictures where I seldom fine anywhere else, if you people like stealth fighter pictures, this is the book for you. Not only the amazing pictures that make me grade it 5 stars, but the amazing story told was also the point. The real story about working on the stealth fighter that people seldon get to see was told what will the pilots must & mustn't do before boarding the plane & after landing the plane. This book is worth buying because it is a valuable aset to the fans of the stealth fighter.

Useful introduction to strategic studies.......2002-05-14

This introductory textbook of strategic studies covers four main themes: the enduring issues of strategy, the evolution of joint warfare, twentieth-century theories, and contemporary issues of grand strategy. The book is written from the perspective of `Western security interests', but even so, studying strategy helps us to think clearly about the ways in which states and others use organised force for political ends.
The writers all refute technological determinism: new weapons - artillery in World War One, tanks in World War Two, guided missiles in the Arab-Israeli war of 1973, precision bombing and superior ground force technology in the Gulf War - were none of them unbeatable. They show that the basic principles of conducting land warfare have hardly changed in the last hundred years. Armies need to combine their arms, defend in depth, keep large reserves, use cover and concealment, and integrate movement and suppressive fire. In particular, Stephen Biddle shows that, contrary to many claims, the USAF air war in the Gulf did not destroy all the Iraqi armour. Possibly 4,100 armoured vehicles later fought the US ground forces, but they did not fight according to the basic principles, so they were beaten.
However, the editors err in dividing what they call `20th-century theories' - deterrence, arms control, terrorism and `irregular warfare' (national liberation struggles) - from the `contemporary issues' of technology, weapons of mass destruction, and humanitarian intervention. These are all still live issues. Further, the editors could have presented them in the livelier form of debates.
As with any collection of pieces by many hands, the quality is uneven, but generally the better essays are more grounded in the realities of 20th-century military history. The worse ones try to discuss, for instance, the causes of war in terms of biology or psychology. As a rule, strikingly individual expressions of one person's views, like Colin Gray's Modern Strategy, or Bernard Brodie's War and Politics, provoke more thought than compilation textbooks
