      5 out of 5 stars Southwest Comprehensive.......2007-09-25

Just returned from a tour of the Southwest. The field guide was easy to use. I liked the fact that it covered so many aspects of the Southwest and eliminated having to tote five or six field guides to cover most of the subject matter.

4 out of 5 stars Good field guide.......2005-10-03

This field guide is really usefull. It has a basic description of hte animals, plants, geology, insects, and weather of the Southwest.

4 out of 5 stars Handy guide to carry along.......2005-09-15

This is a good book to have along as you explore the beauty of the region. It is not very comprehensive, but then if it was it would not be small enough to carry with you in the field, which would defeat its purpose. I feel it is well worth the price and will use it on my upcoming venture into the Southwest this October. I will also take several other books on the Southwest because each provides additional information for this region. It's not possible to get all the reference information in one volume, but this is a great book if you can only have one, and it is small enough to carry along on hikes or explorations. It is also bound properly for field use, an important feature.

5 out of 5 stars If you can only take one field guide on your vacation..........2003-05-23

this is the one to take! Like carrying a park ranger in your backpack to help you know what you are looking at. Trees and wildflowers, animals of the land, sky and water, minerals, stars of the night sky. Increase your knowledge and understanding of the beautiful places you visit and your own backyard. Check out the Audubon Field Guides to Florida and other regions as well. Well worth the money. Lots of color photographs and well organized for easy use.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Field Guide For Your Travels!.......2002-09-05

The field guide was very handy in learning the specific animals and plants I encountered in Arizona.

It is handy to go back and look up an plant or animal in the field guide after a trip - ie. many of my travels were difficult backpack trips and the field guide was left in the car to save weight!!

        Book Description

After Dulcie's dad dies, her mom decides that the two of them should reinvent themselves in California. Dulcie's decision? To steal her dad's '68 Chevy and head back home to Connecticut. Once Dulcie gets there she meets Roxanne, a girl whose scary home life makes Dulcie think that she just might have landed in the right spot at the right time. Luckily for Roxanne, Dulcie Morrigan Jones is a girl with a storehouse of strength and generosity of spirit that stretches on for miles.

Quirky, uplifting, and written in a spare prose, Defining Dulcie is about the connections we make, the resilience of the human spirit, and the absurdities that keep life interesting. It is a debut not to be missed.

        5 out of 5 stars Defining Dulcie.......2007-02-01

A wonderful story and very popular with my students. Our class book group plans on reading this book next month.

        5 out of 5 stars Pitch Perfect.......2006-12-24

You know from the first few pages that this book is in narrative hands you fully trust.

Dulcie's father just died. Her mom's reaction: Let's move across the country and leave it all behind. Dulcie thinks that losing her dad is enough change for one sixteen-year-old.

To describe the plot does not do this book justice, because it is Dulcie, and her relationships, that make this book shine. There is humor building under the surface at all times, so even in her darkest hours, there's the threat of an out-loud laugh around the corner. All the characters in this book are fallible, recognizable people. People you will love spending time with.

If you enjoy character-driven fiction, humor, and a lot of heart, don't hesitate. Buy this book.

        3 out of 5 stars Not sure.......2006-10-29

im not sure how i like this book. It was too dramatic for me but still well written . Some people would like it it just wasnt my book.

It was filled with emotion and feelings. that's probably why i didnt care much for it. It was just too dramatic (for me)

4 out of 5 stars Sad novel that offers a feeling of hope for the future.......2006-04-02

Dulcie's father, a janitor, just died. Her mother decides to move her and Dulcie cross country to California from Connecticut. As soon as Dulcie steps foot in CA, she knows that's not where she belongs. She steals her mother's truck and makes her way back to Newbury, to her grandfather and her home. Dulcie's grandfather, Frank, lets her come back and work for him, without pay, as punishment for worrying her mother when she left. Frank has already hired another helper, Roxanne. Soon, Roxanne and Dulcie become friends. When Dulcie and Frank discover the truth about Roxanne's relationship with her abusive mother, they have to figure out a way to help her.

When I first picked up this book, I thought it would be a sad story about death and moving on. It was sad, but the novel also had a feeling of hope and looking towards the future. Aside from death, Defining Dulcie also dealt with serious issues like abuse. This book was pretty good, especially for a debut novel. I'll be looking forward to reading more books by the author.

              Book Description

Plasticity refers to the ability of many organisms to change their biology or behavior to respond to changes in the environment. Humans are probably the most plastic of all species, and hence the most variable. This is the first book to examine the history of research in this area and it provides information on state-of-the-art research methods and discoveries. It also maps out some areas of future research in human plasticity and variability. Topics discussed include child growth, starvation, diseases of both young and old, and the effects of migration, modernization and other life-style changes. The book will be especially useful to biological anthropologists, human biologists and medical scientists interested in knowing more about how and why humans vary.

I was interested in this book for two reasons, one, I know the author, and two, I knew my daughter would find this as a great reference for her future studies and projects in high school.

Its full of information on just about anything you could want to research in every catagory across the globe, I would strongly recommend this book to anyone in high school or college, for doing any type of report, thesis or just for basic reference material.

You can tell the author (Jeff Lenburg) really put a lot of time and work into this book. I feel it should be a common reference material on any high school or college library shelf. It would also be beneficial for professors or teachers of any grade level.

                              Book Description

John M. Browning was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1855, into a world of gunsmithing. His father was a gunsmith who was already well known for a number of innovations in the field. As a young boy, John spent hours in his father's shop and allegedly knew the name of every part of a gun before he could read. Hardly surprising that at age twenty-three, he was filing his first patent for the "J. M. Browning Single-Shot Rifle."

He inherited his father's business, and with funds of less than a thousand dollars turned it into a thriving gun-making workshop with seven employees. One of Browning's guns was chanced upon by a representative of Winchester, who admired the design so well that the Winchester managing director made the six-day journey to Utah to conclude several lucrative commercial deals that would endure for the next few years. Browning's designs for Colt and the manufacture of many familiar Colt guns also helped boost his company's reputation as a premier gun-maker.

Complete with more than 250 full-color photographs of the guns, this stunning book describes the Browning history, and covers its full range of inventions and designs, from frontier weapons such as the Colt Peacemaker to military arms, shotguns, and hunting rifles. Also shown are various gun-making artifacts, copies of designers' drawings, and interesting photographs of the weapons in the hands of users. The History of Browning Firearms makes a perfect addition to the libraries of Wild West buffs, amateur historians, and firearms enthusiasts.

5 out of 5 stars photographic history of the famed Browning Firearms.......2006-12-01

The Browning gun design firm was influential in the field of American firearms ever since it was founded in Utah in 1855. For the most part, the history of Browning Firearms is about the founder's son, John Browning (1855-1926), who came into the business in the latter 1800s and headed it for decades until his death. John sold designs for hundreds of firearms to companies which then manufactured them in quantity. Because of the popularity of the Browning firearms both in their design and performance, copies of them were produced by other manufacturers; but these were inferior to authentic Brownings. Beyond the pistols, rifles, and shotguns familiar to many, Browning designed machine guns and automatic rifles for the military since the 1890s, and also knives for outdoorsmen. A complete, mostly photographic, introduction to the history of the famed Browning Firearms and the variety of its products.

5 out of 5 stars Any gun owner must have this........2006-11-07

The History of Browning Firearms uses a visual approach to capture the history of one John Browning's contributions to gunsmithing - and shows that Browning's efforts, important as they were, reflected a strong family interest in gunsmithing innovation. Chapters tell how Browning inherited the family business and patented unique productions that were to change the design and manufacture of guns decades later. From a general company history to surveys of special innovations, any gun owner must have this.

                                            Book Description

Analyzing the triumphs and failures of race relations within the Castro regime, this book challenges arguments that the regime eliminated racial inequality or that it was profoundly racist. Through interviews, historical materials, and survey research, it provides a balanced view that demonstrates how much of Cuban racial ideology was actually left unchanged by the revolution. Finally, the book maintains that despite these shortcomings, the regime remains popular among the black minorities because they perceive their alternatives in the U.S. within the Miami Exile community to be far worse.

This book analyzes the triumphs and failures of the Castro regime in the area of race relations. It places the Cuban revolution in a comparative and international framework and challenges arguments that the regime eliminated racial inequality or that it was profoundly racist. Through interviews, historical materials, and survey research, it provides a balanced view. The book maintains that Cuba has not been a racial democracy as some have argued. However, it also argues that Cuba has done more than any other society to eliminate racial inequality. The contemporary outlook of the book demonstrates how much of Cuban racial ideology was unchanged by the revolution. Thus, the current implementation of market reforms and in particular tourism has exacerbated racial inequalities. Finally, it holds that despite these shortcomings, the regime remains popular among blacks because they perceive their alternatives of the US and the Miami Exile community to be far worse.
