The greatest pictorial work on Okavango!.......2001-02-02

Frans Lanting had created marvelous book. His pictures portray the unique beauty of the region, convey the wildness of a place, and force a viewer to visit the place immediately. The photographs and text also urge the people to save this unique ecosystem. We realize the impact of water on the unique environment of the delta that supports the greatest variety of the flora and fauna in the world. At the same time these photographs make us realize what will be lost if the water will be gone. This book has inspired me even more after I visited the Okavango delta. It made me to relive my own experiences once again. After more than 5 years of its publication, this book is still the best pictorial work on Okavango delta. Simply, the greatest!

This is a terrific book to learn more about this region. I can't recommend the book enough. The photography is stunning and the narrative is just right. I only wish it didn't end.

Frans Lanting sees Botswana with a keen eye........1999-02-06

Mr. Lanting is a unique and wonderful photographer who is a great help to all of us. His photos capture the wildlife of the Okavango as they are -- not postcard photos. He has a respect and reverence of this fragile ecosystem (unlike none other in the world) and all that lives and dies there that is captured in this book. Botswana is a special country with a unique ecosystem in the Delta that you should travel to. I've had the good fortune to experience Africa eight times, Botswana twice. I will return many times to the Delta as there is so much there to experience and each time its fresh. Let Mr. Lantings photos pursuade you to go.

This book makes me suspect that Frans Lanting is not only the worlds greatest wildlife photographer but also the greatest bird photographers, crocodile photographer, elephant photographer etc. As usual, his photography is far from the species type of photography often seen. Lanting connects with the subject and transform the experience into art. In addition, he is not afraid to break the rules and make it work. The book is a must in any nature photographers library.

One of the Shoujo Manga Classics.......2006-11-06

Unbelievably fantasic manga series! It is a must read for the accurate depiction of the inner world of teenagers. Not the teenagers as depicted by American TV and film: angst ridden, rebellious, under crippling pressure to conform, continuously chastized by adults for trying to act older than they are. The teenagers in Kare Kano are closer to what most teenagers (in my experience) are really like: responsible, totally emersed in their own world, think grades are actually important!!, and are already incorporating adult decisions into their lives.
At its heart, Kare Kano is a beautiful love story between two souls, whose tender years only adds to the poignancy of the story. Arima and Yukino's love grows from affection into a grand passion almost too overwhelming for their still maturing minds. What I love the best in this series is how in the midst of the action are 'pools' of quiet, in which the emotions of a character can be felt with such forceful purity,like the striking of a bell.

Smooth and filling!.......2003-07-15

This is NOT your typical romance. The author does a wonderful job of putting the thoughts of his main characters down. I've honestly never read a series that I've found myself so close to the changing personality of the characters. It's like looking into somebody's heart. It's so smooth. Yes, smooth is a good word. Oh, it's wonderful! And the television series is just as good!

Disconnection and Despair........2003-10-18

This is a thin book with six stories. If these stories can be said to have a common thread, it is the people who fail to ever make a real connection. The characters in the stories are aimless, seized by momentary ideas which fill the need for purpose and troubled by other people.

All of the stories were well written, but two for me really stood out. The first was "Leaving the Yellow House". This tells the story of a woman who has never succeeded at anything except that she managed to come to own this house. Faced with increasing infirmity, she can no longer care for herself but cannot bring herself to turn her back on her one success.

The second stand-out was "The Gonzaga Manuscripts", a story about a feckless young man (Feiler) who tries to recover a set of lost poems from 1950s Spain. He wants to find purpose in poetry, but his researches keep bringing him back to politics.

These stories are truthfully not among the best work of Bellow. However, you need to bear in mind that given how wonderful his writing generally is, they are still more than worth the time to read.

Unleavened Bread.......2000-08-30

Of these six short stories - written between 1951 and 1968 - it is easy to find things to praise, difficult to find things to criticise. They are, all of them, dense, substantial, well-crafted, (highly?) intellectual, richly satisfying. Why should one want to say anything against them? Well: 'satisfying' - more, perhaps, in the manner of a cross-country run than a raspberry souffle. 'Intellectual': perhaps too intellectual to avoid the charge of monotonousness. All Bellow's characters are assiduously introspective and intensely aware. In consequence, Bellow has perfected a prose style based upon the agglomeration of clauses rather than the sequencing of fully-formed sentences; a type of stream-of-consciousness. This can be as tiring as it is effective. More than this, Bellow's characters are always radically isolated people. They think, think, think and hardly do any interacting with other people (although they often think about doing so). One never hesitates to say that Bellow, in these stories, is telling us the truth about man; one does hesitate to say that he entertains us with that truth.
