Story Lost in the Details.......2004-10-28

I grew up in Richland and went to Hanford High School during the Reagan/Bush years. I found her book interesting, but it seemed to lack the details I was trying to learn more about, primarily the role of HEAL and other citizen action groups to promote more honesty about the dangers of plutonium production. Growing up around "the Area" I found not a lot of awareness about these issues and even found myself avoiding them for the last twenty years of my life! Her book brought back to me the mindset of the area that allows that kind of cloud. She gives only one or two sentences each for HEAL and the Downwinders, without whose work she would not have had the material for her book. None at all to the incredible journalism of Steele at the Spokesman Review and no mention of the whistle blower Casey Ruud. I found that lapse pretty typical of Hanfordization. I remember my Physics teacher telling our class that automobile engines were more dangerous than spent uranium fuel which could be used to power everything in the future. I guess he didn't really consider the use of dirty bombs, <sigh> . . . I found the book Atomic Harvest more informative.

Informative, interesting, and a good digest..........2001-08-21

Dr. Gerber reduced the thousands of documents, memos, and misc data declassified reguarding the Hanford Area and the surrounding region from the very beginning of the Manhattan Project. Having lived there for a majority of my life in what was once the "Richland Village" and going to a high school with a mascot of the Bombers, this book was particularly interesting to me. It also allowed me to carry intelligent conversation with my grandfather (who worked there from the 50's till the 80's). Highly technical in parts but with some explaination, I reccommend you read a bit about radioactivity and geology to assist your understanding of the content.

I'm not so sure that amazon has the latest edition of this book. Check http://www.nunavuthandbook.com/index.html for more information. They have a 2004 edition and the information on this page says 1998. Possibly the edition here is updated but the page is not.

Maximum Ride: An Apt Title .......2007-10-14

These books are complete brain candy, full of action, quick wit, smart dialogue, and loveable characters. If you've got a teenager whose mourning the loss of any forthcoming Harry Potter novels, introduce them to Max and her flock. I promise they won't be able to rest until they've turned the final page.

5 Stars - The perspective of a teen.......2007-09-18

While I am 22, I can honestly say that this book is not written for my age. I feel that the bad reviews that it may have gotten are stimulated and struck down by people outside of its targeted age group (Ages 10 to 15). As an adult I do not think I appreciated this book the way a teen would have. To me it was all mediocre reading, but to a teen it would be action packed and slammed with thrills and excitement. I was sold merely by its cover and soon found that I was out of the range for its targeted audience. For those teens that are in that targeted range I think you will love this book. For those parents whom have children that are interested in science-fiction then I recommend this book. For adults themselves I would not recommend this book due to its elementary storyline. For we, as adults, could not truly accept it for its real value.

Quick fun romp.......2007-09-16

As with most of James Patterson's work, this book is not the next contender for the Pulitzer, but it is a quick fun read, expecially for young adults seeking something outside of the Harry Potter urban fantasy vein that has taken over YA lit in the last few years.

These characters are wise beyond their years from living on the lam for so long but they're written so that it's obvious that they're still kids rather than adults in little bodies. In a way, this is Cynthia Voight's Homecoming with an edge.

Not a complete story - INREDIBLY annoying lack of ending.......2007-08-31

OK. I actually FOUND a copy of this book in a vacation house. I started reading and got into the story. And then the freaking book just ENDS without resolving anything. Whoever thought this was a good idea is a PUTZ. Yes, I know there are sequels, but I feel misled and SUPER ANNOYED!

Sporyswriting as Literature.......2003-04-28

The 1999 edition of "The Best American Sports Writing" has plenty of moments that will enthrall avid sports fans and even those less avid who merely like a good story. The series is a national treasure, which collects the best sports related writing every year and puts it into a single easy-to-read volume. The sports included run the gamut from the traditional team sports of baseball and football to more extreme examples like mountaineering. The main requirement for inclusion is great writing, and that's wht this series delivers consistently.

The best articles in the 1999 edition include Thomas Boswell's account of Cal Ripken's voluntary stoppage of his historic games played streak, Steve Friedman's biographical article on tormented 2nd generation professional bowler Pete Weber, Allen Abel's hilarous tribute to the long-folded World Hockey Association, and Adam Gopnik's insightful explantion of why World Cup Soccer fails to excite American fans. As always, the quality of the reporting means that even if you have only a margainal interest in the sport described, you'll still find it entertaining.

Overall, another fine entry in an outstanding series.

Could have been longer.......1999-10-26

Hard to believe Amazon.com can't keep their years straight when it comes to reviewing this series. Anyway, the latest collection of sports writing was all right but nothing special by the usual high standards. It's a smaller collection than normal, and there are a few hunting and fishing pieces that I couldn't get into. That didn't leave a whole lot, although what was left was pretty darn good. I particularly enjoyed the articles on the parents of a benched high school football player suing the school, and on the 1998 World Cup.

Another solid edition.......2000-05-11

Edward Hoagland has done a wonderful job in selecting a breadthof essays that radiate his and others various interests. The 1999essays takes us from the horrors of sexual abuse to the significance of Job to the beauty of "bogs." I particularly enjoyed David Quammen's "Planet of Weeds," an essay so compelling and upsetting that I sat shell-shocked after reading it. As usual, Ian Frazier impresses, and I particulary enjoyed Toure's "What's Inside You Brother?" My only disappointment is that the work doesn't have an essay from Hoagland; his modesty prevails.

Overlooked excellence.......1999-12-23

This is full of many great essays, all of them overlooked bits of excellent writing. My favorite is HITLER'S COUCH. Personal, historical, insightful, a prose poem about the tragic hellishness of this century and how it relates to the individual, without any self impressed "brilliance."

A Great Overview!.......2000-03-30

I was at the library doing research, and this book happened to be on the wrong shelf. I picked it up and decided to check it out, and I'm glad I did! This is a great overview of authors that most people wouldn't be exposed to on an everyday basis. I'm excited to look into more work by some of the authors I read. If you like modern, diverse writing I highly recommend this book!
