      Book Description

This complete guide to outdoor recreation describes dozens of outdoor activities at 20 "pocket" wilderness areas in California, Oregon, and Washington—including hiking, bicycling, fishing, running, skiing, climbing, birding, horseback riding, and more in the first and only book to focus on these small, easily accessible "pocket" wildernesses.

Of America's 680 designated wilderness areas, 200 are "pocket" wildernesses of fewer than 12,000 acres. These small wonders are wilder than most parks and forests, yet their size makes them more intimate and approachable than their larger counterparts. They are small enough to be thoroughly explored over a long weekend, but large enough to offer varied terrain and activities. And these pocket wildernesses are free from vehicular distractions, making the outdoor experience more pristine than that of a forest or park.

This comprehensive guide provides complete recreational information for 20 pocket wildernesses in California, Oregon, and Washington. Each chapter has detailed trail information and descriptions of wilderness geology, flora, and fauna, as well as signature outdoor activities that surround the wildland, such as mountain biking, paddling, rock hounding, even whale watching! Each chapter will include an activity table with information on what is available, as well as recommending family activities, nearby attractions, and lodging options. 50 black & white photographs, 20 maps, index.

      Book Description

Kansas is not only the Sunflower State, it's the very heart of America's heartland. It is a place of extremes in politics as well as climate, where ambitious and energetic people have attempted to put ideals into practice--a state that has come a long way since being identified primarily with John Brown and his exploits.

Craig Miner has written a complete and balanced history of Kansas, capturing the state's colorful past and dynamic present as he depicts the persistence of contrasting images of and attitudes toward the state throughout its 150 years. A work combining serious scholarship with great readability, it encompasses everything from the Kansas-Nebraska Act to the evolution-creationism controversy, emphasizing the historical moments that were pivotal in forming the culture of the state and the diverse group of people who have contributed to its history.

This is the first new state history to appear in over twenty-five years. Written to enlighten general readers within and well beyond the state's borders, it offers coverage not found in previous histories: greater attention to its cities--notably Wichita--and to its south central and western regions, accounts of business history, contributions of women and minorities, and environmental concerns. It presents the dark as well as the bright side of Kansas progressivism and is the first Kansas history to deal with the post-World War II era in any significant detail.

Craig Miner has spent almost forty years researching, teaching, and writing Kansas history and has dug deeply into primary sources. That research has enabled him to assemble a wider cast of characters and more entertaining collection of quotations than found in earlier histories and to better show how individual initiative and entrepreneurial aspirations have profoundly influenced the creation of present-day Kansas.

Ranging from the days of cattle and railroads to the era of oil and agribusiness, this history situates the state in its own terms rather than as a sidebar to a larger American epic. Miner brings to its pages an identifiable Kansas character to preserve what is distinctive about the state's identity for future generations, echoing what one Kansan said over half a century ago: "Kansas is simply Kansas. May she never be tempted to become anything else."

2 out of 5 stars More like a weak summary than a history.......2006-07-15

This book reads more like a few index cards collected at the KU library than it does a real state history. Instead of any detail of the OK Corral shootout in Dodge City (or any other history of Kansas west of Salina) we get three mentions of the KU basketball team. In another example, the author mentions the "Wakarusa War" in passing at least four times before briefly explaining it later in the book, with the author presumably assuming all of us are familiar with the river that runs near Lawrence. The author explains in the preface that a "literal collection of history would be a paperweight" and instead gives us a meandering narrative with few actual examples, ironically making this a paperweight for everyone else. The state of Kansas deserves a better documented history than a transcript of two KU basketball fans discussing the history of the northeast corner of the state.

        Book Description

In 1876 Rolf Johnson and his family left Illinois for Phelps County, Nebraska. There they faced the challenges of pioneering on the Great Plains: digging wells, building sod houses, plowing and planting crops, and fighting prairie fires. Johnson's diary goes beyond individual conquest, however, and provides insight into the great cooperative endeavor of plains settlement. Rolf's Swedish family and neighbors worked and socialized with other Swedes just as nearby Danish settlers remained in close physical and cultural contact with other Danish immigrants. A very eligible ninetten-year-old bachelor, Rolf also offers touching vignettes on the rituals of courting.

Abruptly, with no explanation in his diary, and with no itinerary or prospects, Rolf left home in 1879 "with the intention of going west for a season." His departure may have been sparked by the marital fervor exhibited by a female suitor. Rolf felt he was "not quite prepared to leave the state of single blessedness for that of double misery." In Sidney, Nebraska, he ran with the "sporting" element, who showed him photographs of "fast women of the town stark naked." He found employment with a wagon freighter headed for the Black Hills, where he saw Calamity Jane in action. Rolf's education continued until the diaries end in Cubero, New Mexico, in 1880. He returned to Phelps County in 1882 and remained there for most of his life. Rolf's lively diaries offer an entertaining eyewitness account of pioneer life and an unmatched resource for historians.

            1 out of 5 stars Sunflower's Promise.......2005-03-05

This a very corrupted version of one of our folktales. The second half of the book covers a little bit of our history, the people, food, Zuni today. Some of the information is not accurate. For example on page 35, second paragraph, it states that the Zuni people still live on top of a mesa we fled to in the 1680s during an attack by the Spanish. I can assure you that we do not live on top of a mesa. Also, how can we live near the Rio Grande River close to the border of Arizona? Our reservation is 12 miles from the Arizona border and the Rio Grande River is about 150 miles to the east. There are several misspellings on page 36, first paragraph, the word we use for ourselves is "A:shiwi", not "Siwi." And we do not have a third gender different from men and women. There are also a couple of pictures that are not of Zuni. The caption for a picture on page 39 reads, "A Zuni woman baking bread traditionally in a horno in the San Ildefonso Pueblo in 1935." This picture is definitely not of Zuni. A lot of the information is written in past tense whereas we're continuing our way of life and the practice of our religion and culture. I would not recommend this book as a reliable source for information on Zuni, and most definitely not if a teacher were considering it for a source of information for the classroom.

                  The Witching Hours

Samhain: 10/31, or Halloween -- traditionally a time to reflect, a time of divination, and a time to honor the ancients. But Phoebe's plans to communicate with her ancestors are cut short when she's recruited to help reunite a star-crossed, magical couple.

Yule: 12/22, or the winter solstice, and the longest night of the year. And when Paige enters an all-night party at a local club, she finds herself at the center of an evil plot to bring about permanent midnight.

Imbolc: 2/1, a time when the earliest hopes for spring are fostered and seeds are planted for dreams of the coming summer months. But Piper can't look toward the future -- and having children with Leo -- when her half-whitelighter, half-witch sister's powers are on the fritz. Is a hybrid baby destined for doom?

                  Customer Reviews:

                  5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!.......2005-12-01

Charmed is a great TV show and I love the fact that each sister has their own unique story in this book! Although I love Charmed and I am a huge fan of all the sister's, my favorite one is Piper, played by Holly Marie Combs. To me Charmed is not just a show about how three sisters fight demons and warlocks everyday, I watch Charmed because in a very big way, they are just like us, and that is exactly what this book implies. Piper wants to have children and have a normal life with Leo, but with a sister's power's gone awry and with the fact that they are indeed the Charmed Ones, Piper feels like maybe having a baby might make things more difficult. Pheobe and Paige's stories were also very good, I enjoyed the whole book very much and I would definately say that if u love Charmed as much as I do, to go ahead and buy this book, it is well worth the money!!!!

4 out of 5 stars seasons of the witch vol.1 charmed.......2004-08-23

I am a very huge fan of this show so I was absolutly interested in this book. The individual stories for each sister was great. I enjoyed each section. 3 out of 5 stars seasons of paige?.......2004-06-03

this is a good book but it focuses mainly on paige not the other sisters, espiecally in piper's story. as a big charmed fan i noticed that in the early paige books they tended to focus on paige there but i thought that was just so that they could establish her character after the lost of prue. but now it seems that she a bigger focus in all the books even though she's now been in more books than the character prue. i think the writers should share out the characters roles more evenly.

this is a good book though in the fact that in infuses a bit of every day practiced wicca into it when it focuses on certain rituals preformed at certain times of the years.

overall it's a good book but not if you've had enough of paige

                  5 out of 5 stars Nice printing.......2004-04-28

The best thing about this book is the appearance. It's got cool cover and nice printing. It uses better quality paper (whiter - very friendly to the eyes). Larger than usual Charmed books. The first and second story are good but the last one is a bit boring. If you're a Charmed fans, buy it anyway. It's good addition to your collection.

                          Book Description

Recently, environmental scientists have been required to perform a new type of assessment-ecological risk assessment. This is the first book that explains how to perform ecological risk assessments and gives assessors access to the full range of useful data, models, and conceptual approaches they need to perform an accurate assessment. It explains how ecological risk assessment relates to more familiar types of assessments. It also shows how to organize and conduct an ecological risk assessment, including defining the source, selecting endpoints, describing the relevant features of the receiving environment, estimating exposure, estimating effects, characterizing the risks, and interacting with the risk manager. Specific technical topics include finding and selecting toxicity data; statistical and mathematical models of effects on organisms, populations, and ecosystems; estimation of chemical fate parameters; modeling of chemical transport and fate; estimation of chemical uptake by organisms; and estimation, propagation, and presentation of uncertainty. Ecological Risk Assessment also covers conventional risk assessments, risk assessments for existing contamination, large scale problems, exotic organisms, and risk assessments based on environmental monitoring. Environmental assessors at regulatory agencies, consulting firms, industry, and government labs need this book for its approaches and methods for ecological risk assessment. Professors in ecology and other environmental sciences will find the book's practical preparation useful for classroom instruction. Environmental toxicologists and chemists will appreciate the discussion of the utility for risk assessment of particular toxicity tests and chemical determinations.

Whatever happened to Zora Neale Hurston? In the 1930s her stories, novels, folklore studies, and plays were all over the bestseller lists. By the '60s she was forgotten--a reversal of fortune captured in the extraordinary collection Zora Neale Hurston: A Life in Letters.

Why did Hurston's star fade? Simple weariness, her correspondence suggests. She was happier, it seems, tilling her Florida garden than revealing her soul to the world. She was also not shy of crossing swords with the likes of W.E.B. Du Bois and Langston Hughes, and in a time of growing militancy and the awakening civil rights movement Hurston became increasingly conservative, developing political stances that, editor Kaplan writes, "have often baffled her admirers." Hurston developed a pen-stilling, probably ungrounded suspicion that anything she wrote would be stolen by other writers, who would "then hate me for being alive to make their pretensions out a lie. And then take all kinds of steps to head me off."

Having enjoyed early fame, Hurston died alone and in poverty. This well-assembled and very welcome book traces her sad path, and it adds much to our understanding of the once-neglected writer. --Gregory McNamee

                                  Book Description

“ I mean to live and die by my own mind,” Zora Neale Hurston told the writer Countee Cullen. Arriving in Harlem in 1925 with little more than a dollar to her name, Hurston rose to become one of the central figures of the Harlem Renaissance, only to die in obscurity. Not until the 1970s was she rediscovered by Alice Walker and other admirers. Although Hurston has entered the pantheon as one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century, the true nature of her personality has proven elusive.

Now, a brilliant, complicated and utterly arresting woman emerges from this landmark book. Carla Kaplan, a noted Hurston scholar, has found hundreds of revealing, previously unpublished letters for this definitive collection; she also provides extensive and illuminating commentary on Hurston’s life and work, as well as an annotated glossary of the organizations and personalities that were important to it.

From her enrollment at Baltimore’s Morgan Academy in 1917, to correspondence with Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, Langston Hughes, Dorothy West and Alain Locke, to a final query letter to her publishers in 1959, Hurston’s spirited correspondence offers an invaluable portrait of a remarkable, irrepressible talent.

                                  4 out of 5 stars Mixed Review.......2005-08-13

Kaplan has an excellent compilation here, but readers who bought her hard copy first edition and compared it with her second edition paperback will notice a complete rewrite of her commentary of the Ruby McCollum story. In the first edition, Kaplan states that "McCollum did not testify at her trial," and gives a rather superficial (and inaccurate) account of the Adams-McCollum connection. In the second edition, she correctly reports the trial and greatly improves her account of the story, with the exception of erring in Ruby McCollum's age by failing to do primary research and visit McCollum's grave to see the marker.

What Kaplan also fails to do is to mention my name, and the fact that my contact with her regarding my book, The Trial of Ruby McCollum (available on Amazon), included the complete transcript of the missing trial as well as other detailed research that she evidently either revisited with greater thoroughness, or discovered for the first time. She had promised an acknowledgment of my contribution to her work, but seems to have forgotten the promise. This makes me question her other research, and the proper crediting of sources.

I cannot argue that her book is otherwise a great contribution to Hurston scholarship, but I can set the record straight on how her work was improved by my contributions without even a footnote.

You'll fall in love with Zora through the letters that she wrote from the early 20s until her death in 1960. A compelling and fascinating woman who didn't leave much unsaid. The letters still brim with vitality and energy and reflect the character of a woman way ahead of her time.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A Writing Spirit.......2005-03-07

Zora Neale Hurston told her life story through the many novels and plays she wrote, but she also told it through the incredible volume of letters she wrote to friends and supporters as well as to her enemies and detractors. She was a prolific letter writer whose main theme was always on her public life of writing.

Through Kaplan's "A Life in Letters," Hurston reveals all the joys and frustrations, the highs and lows of a writing life. They also reveal her constant struggles, despite critical acclaim, to make ends meet.

But this woman loved to write and loved an audience. Her letters are inside proof of her amazing talent and joyful, triumphant will. They very clearly convey her belief that words and stories can transform people and shape events.

It's a complex and impressive book to read. Kaplan organizes the letters by decade and provides a personal and professional context for each chapter through scholarly introductions and extensive footnotes. Even some 50 years after her death, the tone and flavor in Hurston's letters are so charged and immediate you almost want to drop her a line. Who knows? This woman's spirit was so strong, she may even write back.

5 out of 5 stars Adventurous life-journey captured in letters.......2004-03-29

Kaplan's collection of Hurston's letters provides her fans with a first-hand intimate view into the mind of the author which has previously been restricted to the perview of scholars. For the first time, readers can draw their own conclusions about Hurston's often contradictory, enigmatic, and adventurous life.
The letters are logically organized in chronological order with a comprehensive and lively introduction to each decade. Kaplan's painstakingly thorough research, evidenced in her footnotes and glossary, help guide the reader's interpetation and understanding of events in a way that a biography cannot. For this reason, I have read Valerie Boyd's excellent biography in tandem with Kaplan's collection of Hurston's letters. I was also impressed with the "new" research in Kaplan's book that sheds light on some of Hurston's social and political stands, such as her involement in the first black doll to be produced in the U.S. In addition to the many new facts she presents, I also found Kaplan's editorial comments to be extremely enlightening and well-founded. I beleive that most fans who read this collection of letters will most likely feel the same way toward Kaplan as I do . . . deeply grateful for the gift of insight.

This collection of Hurston's letters not only offers insight into the life and thoughts of this fiercely independent and enigmatic writer, it also lends clarity to the historical and cultural context in which they were written. Kaplan's lively introductions to each decade are laced with intelligent commentary and fascinating details that define the complexities of Hurston's life and time.

                                    Book Description

This exceptional collection provides new insight into the life of North Carolina writer and activist Paul Green (1894-1981), the first southern playwright to attract international acclaim for his socially conscious dramas. Green, who taught philosophy and drama at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, won the Pulitzer Prize in 1927 for In Abraham's Bosom, an authentic drama of black life. Among his other Broadway productions were Native Son and Johnny Johnson. From the 1930s onward, Green created fifteen outdoor historical productions known as symphonic dramas, thereby inventing a distinctly American theater form. These include The Lost Colony (1937), which is still performed today.

Laurence Avery has selected and annotated the 329 letters in this volume from over 9,000 existing pieces. The letters, to such figures as Sherwood Anderson, Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, John Dos Passos, Zora Neale Hurston, and others interested in the arts and human rights in the South, are alive with the intellect, buoyant spirit, and sensitivity to the human condition that made Green such an inspiring force in the emerging New South. Avery's introduction and full bibliography of the playwright's works and first productions give readers a context for understanding Green's life and times.
