    Product Description

This is the Teacher's Guide for Organisms - From Macro to Micro, published by the Carolina Biological Supply Company. Subject: Growth and development of organisms Students of all ages, but particularly those of middle school age, have a natural curiosity about living things and how they function. OrganismsFrom Macro To Micro taps this curiosity by helping students. Materials included in the OrganismsFrom Macro to Micro Unit Kit The Beginning During the first six lessons, students perform inquiry activities during which they clarify what they already know about organisms, then develop and hone laboratory and critical-thinking skills used throughout the module. They set up several module-long inquiries during which they investigate organisms at different stages of their life cycle. The brief life cycles of Wisconsin Fast Plants and cabbage white butterflies offer students an in-depth look at the interdependence of these organisms as well as the opportunity to observe traits passed on from parents to offspring. Continuing the Cycle Students explore the world of cells, asexual and sexual reproduction, and several important life processes of plants and animals. This part culminates with the introduction of the Anchor Activity (a research project), in which students work in groups during the remainder of the module to investigate the relationship between structure and function in vertebrates and share their findings with the class. Completing the Cycle The remaining lessons offer students experiences with several interesting organismsmold, yeast, Daphnia, and Hydraas they design their own inquiries and gather and interpret the data. Students also prepare a graphical dichotomous key using photos and observations they have recorded about the organisms encountered during the module. Each part of the module concludes with a formal assessment; informal assessments are imbedded into the lessons. Module length: 812 weeks.

              Description:
In the present study, the yeast estrogen screen (YES) has been used to assess the estrogenic activity in surface waters of a coastal region in the German Baltic Sea. Solid-phase extraction using the copolymer Oasis HLB followed by a clean-up on silica was carried out on approximately 50-l water samples. From the final 400@ml extract volume, 100@ml aliquots were used for the measurement of estrogenic activity and for chemical analysis, which was performed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). From 29 samples taken during two campaigns (2003 and 2004) at five different stations 27 samples showed an estrogenic response higher than 10%. The response in the YES was expressed as measured estradiol equivalents (EEQs), which were in the range of 0.01 (Darss Peninsula) to 0.82ng/l (Inner Wismar Bay). Samples from stations located in inner coastal waters showed higher estrogenic activities than those from outer located stations. A comparison of measured estrogenicity (YES) and calculated estrogenicity (chemical analysis) showed significant differences, probably due to the presence of anti-estrogenic compounds and/or the estrogenic activity of unknown, not identified contaminants. The main contributors to the overall estrogenic activity were synthetic and natural hormones.

                Description:
The river Lambro is the most polluted tributary of the river Po in North Italy and was chosen as a representative water course discharging industrialized areas. Water and sediment samples of the river Lambro were investigated regarding the presence of endocrine disrupting compounds. A combined procedure was used consisting of solid-phase extraction and HPLC based fractionation of samples, of screening for (anti)androgenic activity using the yeast androgen screen (YAS) and of chemical analysis using HPLC-MS/MS and GC-MS. Androgenic and antiandrogenic activities were found in specific fractions of the water and sediment while the total extracts showed antiandrogenic activity only. The chemical analysis of the fractions and total extracts with antiandrogenic activities revealed the presence of compounds with suspected antiandrogenic potency such as bisphenol A, iprodione, nonylphenol, p,p'-DDE and tert-octylphenol but other unknown compounds contributed mainly to the observed antiandrogenic activities. The antiandrogenic load of the river Lambro ranged between 1.34 and 17.1@mM flutamide-equivalents and may pose a risk to aquatic environments. Future screenings for EDC in the environment that have the potential to interfere with reproduction of aquatic organisms should be extended to different modes of actions including (anti)androgenic ones.

                  Description:
Numerous studies have investigated degradation of individual endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in lab or natural waters. However, natural variations in water matrices and mixtures of EDCs in the environment may confound analysis of the treatment efficiency. Because chemical based analytical methods cannot represent the combined or synergistic activities between water quality parameters and/or the EDC mixtures at environmentally relevant concentrations (@mg L^-^1-ng L^-^1), bioanalytical assessments of residual estrogenic activity in treated water were used to evaluate the performance of the UV based advanced oxidation process for estrogenic contaminants in water. Four EDCs including estradiol (E"2), ethinyl estradiol (EE"2), bisphenol-A (BPA) and nonylphenol (NP) were spiked individually or as a mixture at @mg L^-^1-ng L^-^1 in laboratory or natural river water. The removal rates of estrogenic activity were quantitatively evaluated by in vitro yeast estrogen screen (YES) and in vivo Vitellogenin (VTG) assays with Japanese medaka fish (Oryzias latipes). UV in combination with 10 ppm H"2O"2 as an oxidation process was capable of decreasing in vitro and in vivo estrogenic activity, however, in vivo estrogenic activity of the EDC mixture in natural water was not completely removed at UV fluence up to 2000 mJ cm^-^2. The removal rates of in vitro estrogenic activity of the EDC mixtures were lower than those observed for single compounds, and slower in natural waters, likely due to lower steady-state concentrations of hydroxyl radicals (*OH) in the presence of *OH scavengers from the water matrix and EDC mixture.

                    Description:
Numerous environmental pollutants have been detected for estrogenic activity by interacting with the estrogen receptor, but little information is available about their interactions with the progesterone receptor. In this study, emission samples generated by fossil fuel combustion (FFC) and air particulate material (APM) collected from an urban location near a traffic line in a big city of China were evaluated to interact with the human progesterone receptor (hPR) signaling pathway by examining their ability to interact with the activity of hPR expressed in yeast. The results showed that the soot of a petroleum-fired vehicle possessed the most potent anti-progesteronic activity, that of coal-fired stove and diesel fired agrimotor emissions took the second place, and soot samples of coal-fired heating work and electric power station had lesser progesterone inhibition activity. The anti-progesteronic activity of APM was between that of soot from petroleum-fired vehicle and soot from coal-fired establishments and diesel fired agrimotor. Since there was no other large pollution source near the APM sampling sites, the endocrine disrupters were most likely from vehicle emissions, tire attrition and house heating sources. The correlation analysis showed that a strong relationship existed between estrogenic activity and anti-progesteronic activity in emissions of fossil fuel combustion. The discoveries that some environmental pollutants with estrogenic activity can also inhibit hPR activity indicate that further studies are required to investigate potential mechanisms for the reported estrogenic activities of these pollutants.

                      Description:
Twenty urban soil samples, with a wide range of Pb (14-5323 mg/kg) and Cu (8-12987 mg/kg), were used to compare the operational speciation of a five-step sequential leach with the bioavailability determined with bioluminescent Pb (RN4220(pTOO24)) and Cu (MC1061(pSLcueR/pDNPcopAluc)) specific bacterial biosensors and a Cu specific yeast sensor. The bioavailable Pb concentrations were all similar or lower than the first sequential leach step (1M NaOAc). In contrast, in some samples the bioavailable concentrations of Cu clearly exceeded even the second sequential leach step (0.1 M Na"4P"2O"7). With the yeast sensor 12/20 samples were below detection, however, the yeast sensor was capable of detecting all high Cu concentrations. The biosensors used in this study are not capable of detecting the natural soil concentrations of Pb and Cu in the studied area.

The third book in the Fearless series was fantastic. Just as good as the first two. The plot is really developing, and I am starting to see changes in all of the characters. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

                                4 out of 5 stars Adventure #1!!.......2003-10-28

In the third book of the Fearless series, Gaia is on her first real adventure since the reader met her and so much happenes that it's hard to believe that all the events of the story occcured in one day. Sam, who is not on very good terms with Gaia (explained in book #2) is kidknapped under mysterious circumstances that not the reader nor Gaia knows about. The story follows her not only going on several tasks to save Sam, but takes the reader deeper into her past and the past of the other characters. I won't ruin the ending, but it isn't wrapped up in a neat little bow and solved happily. After the last page is turned, there are still a million questions the reader has. This was a great book in the series because it takes Gaia on her first adventure since starting in her new life. It puts a new spin on her relationship with Sam as well as some people from her dark past.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Addition to the Series.......2003-10-16

Gaia is angry. Sam is gone. He hasn't just disappeared on his own. No, he's been kidnapped. Someone has kidnapped him to get to Gaia. To hurt her. To make her feel pain. Now Gaia only has three hours to find him. Three hours. Or Sam will die. And it will be because of her. There will be no one to blame, except for Gaia.

This was a fantastic addition to the FEARLESS series. Pascal has created enticing and intriguing situations involving Gaia and her friends, that make you want to continue reading. A must-have book for fans of the previous books, FEARLESS and SAM.

Amy Sohn lives in New York, where she writes a raunchy column for the New York Press called "Female Trouble." Her first novel features a young woman named Ariel Steiner, who lives in New York and writes a raunchy column called "Run Catch Kiss" for City Week. Any other similarities between author and creation are, no doubt, purely accidental. We first meet Ariel the summer after her graduation from college when she returns to the city, ready to resume the acting career she had as a child. Unfortunately, college not only enlarged Ariel's mind--it had a broadening effect on her body as well. "I can't send you out for any ingenue parts until you lose fifteen pounds," her agent tells her. Ariel is sure this won't take long and indulges in an optimistic fantasy about the fame and fortune that will soon come her way once she's lost the weight--an appearance in a George C. Wolfe production; a walk-on in a George Clooney film; an Oscar-winning performance in a Woody Allen movie, complete with requisite Oscar fantasy: "I'd bring my father as my date, and when Jack Palance opened the envelope and announced me as the winner, I'd run up to the stage in a strapless Chanel and they'd cut to a shot of my dad drowning in a sea of his own mucus." But until the day when Ariel Steiner becomes the third part of a Hollywood girl-triumvirate comprised of herself, Gwyneth, and Winona, a girl's got to eat; and so begins a ribaldly picaresque journey from actress wannabe to infamous New York sex columnist--"the Hester Prynne of downtown."

Run Catch Kiss is a novel that will appeal to a very specific audience--fans of Amy Sohn; young college graduates who'd like to imagine it's really this easy to achieve notoriety in a city like New York; and readers who enjoy lots of name-dropping, club-hopping, and frank descriptions of sex and other bodily functions. Sohn includes several of Ariel's columns ("Stench of a Woman," for example, or "Smutlife") as well as the letters she gets in response. In between, Ariel and her cronies and assorted one-night stands hang out in places with names like BarF and BarBarella, and drop pop references to Gen-X movies and music. Sohn delivers it all up with moxie, making up for the novel's literary weaknesses by sheer full-frontal outrageousness. --Alix Wilber

                                Book Description

"I was only twenty-two and already I was infamous..." So begins Amy Sohn's hilarious and wise debut novel, Run Catch Kiss.

When the saucy Ariel Steiner returns home to New York City to be an actress, she is buoyed by daydreams of becoming Hollywood's hottest ingenue. Nothing can stand in her way -- nothing, that is, but her freshman-fifteen pounds, a senile talent agent, and the fact that she's living back home with her parents in Brooklyn.

While waiting for the ever-elusive big break, Ariel discovers a hidden talent for channeling her erotic fantasies and becomes a sex columnist at New York's hottest downtown weekly. Soon, art and life are imitating one another, and the junkies, commitmentphobes, and other subjects of Ariel's columns are wreaking havoc on her life. But when she finally falls in love, the real Ariel must stand up. Is she a nice Jewish girl who wants to settle down or a brazen sex kitten who'd rather meet a deadline than the man of her dreams?

Sharp, savvy, and irresistible, Run Catch Kiss is a tongue-in-cheek commentary on that dangerous turn-of-the-century phenomenon: the single girl who wants it all.

3 out of 5 stars Out Of Breath.......2006-10-07

Amy Sohn is one funny chick. Her obsession with getting laid and giving head and her tendency to lapse into reptitive sexual fantasies notwithstanding, there's lots to love here. Her depictions of the off Broadway and off off Broadway worlds are uncanny. I had to keep reminding myself she's 22. She's 22. Everybody's a romantic nutcase when they're 22.

                                1 out of 5 stars Disappointed!!.......2005-01-17

I just finished this book and I must say IT IS NOT " The thinking person's Bridget Jones" - The Independent. Whoever wrote that review should be fired ~
This main character in this book (Ariel) has very very very very low self esteem and acts really cheap. I didn't think that she was an interesting character. I kept thinking that the book would get better but it didn't, it was also too long because the character doesn't change or grow. The sex scenes described in this book were a little gross. Overall I didn't like it and I cannot recommend it. The only good thing I can say about it is that it has fast-paced writing.

3 out of 5 stars A bit over the top.......2004-11-29

I liked the writing and the story line is decent enough but some of the sex episodes are incredible--few folks get there so quickly and attach so little meaning to it all, with people they hardly know. Or maybe few decent folks do. It's not the action--that's good and funky, lively and thrilling--but the related choices that just don't cut it for me.

                                1 out of 5 stars Don't Even Bother.......2004-06-23

This has to be the worst thing I have ever read. The characters self esteme must be in the gutter because of all the guys she wants to hook up with, plus she masturbates while someone is talking to her.
Whoever lives a life like this in reality I don't envy them. I am not easily shocked, but some of the stuff coming from the pages of the book were just horrendous. I paid $1.99 at an A&P for this, it would have less painful just to throw it down the drain.

4 out of 5 stars More than a Sex and the City Wannabe.......2004-01-16

It was only natural that Sohn was tapped to compile the official Sex and the City book, because the parallel between Run Catch Kiss's Ariel Steiner and Sex and the City's Carrie Bradshaw is obvious: single women in New York writing a column about love/sex/dating in a local rag, and their various misadventures end up memorialized in print.

Where the two part company is Ariel Steiner's ineptitude. Satisfying her editors with bawdy details of her life, she barely disguises the names of her dates and becomes quite infamous very quickly, resulting in the loss of potentially good propects for fear of having their lives revealed in print, and the attraction of those who would do anything for the exposure.

What kept me reading was Sohn's wickedly funny phrasings. I find it difficult to describe them--you just have to see 'em to believe 'em. She finds a way to take a mundane event and recast it in its snappiest, most humorous light. The book screams for a sequal, and I, for one, hope Sohn delivers.

"One of the most significant research programs in science studies today is that of Daniel Lee Kleinman. Not only does he utilize the ethnographic methods of the laboratory studies to integrate micro- and macrosociological perspectives, but he also analyzes the political economy of laboratory life to point to important policy problems that the privatizing patterns of contemporary biology raise for the public good."-David Hess, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

"Kleinman's confident mustering of evidence and argument results in an original, soundly based piece of scholarship that is both topical, socially important, and effective. The writing is clear throughout, covering technical material (both biological and sociological) competently. . . . For those interested in lab studies, this will be a 'must read.'"-Brian Martin, University of Wollongong

                                        Book Description

Space Division Multiple Access (SDMA) is one of the most promising methods in solving the capacity problem of wireless communication systems. In addition to creating more efficient SDMA algorithms it is vital to determine and understand the theoretical limit of performance improvement. The greatest challenge is extending Shannon’s channel capacity equation to cover the wireless channels that use spatial signal processing. This book defines formulas which can be used to evaluate the limit capacity of multipath wireless channels in a particular receiving region with size limitation. It also contains charts with optimum numbers of space subchannels and limit capacities related to radio channel parameters. The book also investigates stochastic models for 2-D and 3-D multipath random radio channels. The non-ray method for building a stochastic model, based on spherical harmonics, is presented here for the first time.

                                          Book Description

The Last of the Mohicans is the most widely-read and internationally acclaimed of James Fenimore Cooper's Leatherstocking tales, and has traditionally been regarded as an exciting and well-made adventure story. In recent years, however, critics have found in this classic tale of colonial warfare deeper levels of meaning. In the introduction to this volume, H. Daniel Peck studies these developments by tracking critical responses to the novel from the time of its publication in 1826 to the present day. The essays that follow present contemporary reassessments of The Last of the Mohicans from a variety of critical perspectives.
