Book Description
Rule #1: If at all possible, don't pretend to be something you're not. Specifically, don't play dead. Trust me on this one. I did it, so I should know.
Jo O'Connor has spent her whole life moving around. When it comes to new schools, there's not a trick in the book about starting over that Jo doesn't know. But life is about to teach her a new trick: how to disappear entirely.
Rule #2: Always expect the Spanish Inquisition, no matter what anyone else does.
They have to move again. Now. This very night. Jo knows better than to argue. Her dad is the key witness in a major case against a big-time bad guy. But Jo just can't resist one last visit to the school where she's been so happy. All she wants is to say good-bye. That can't cause any problems, can it?
Rule #3: Never assume you can predict the future.
Now Jo's one last visit has landed her smack in the middle of a ghost story. Specifically, her own. By the time it's over, she'll have a whole new set of rules about what's real, what's make-believe, and -- most of all -- what's important.

funny, original teen romance.......2006-08-14
Josephine Claire Calloway O'Connor has spent her entire life since she was eight moving from city to city. Between third grade and senior year she was in at least two schools each year. Now she's in her second as a senior, and she's hoping that it's her last first day of school. Things start differently. Instead of blending in, she's immediately noticed by the BMOC (big man on campus). She really likes Alex, and he seems to like her. She makes friends for the first time in a long time, and she's loving her life. Then her dad announces that they have to leave. Now. As Jo learns the details of their constant moves and tries to resurrect her old life, things spin out of control. Jo struggles to right everything, while also trying to keep her old- and new- life secret. This book kept you in suspense and turning pages until the end. This is part of the Simon Romantic Comedies series, and I think it is one of the better novels.
disappointed.......2006-03-27
I'm relieved that I didn't start reading the series with this book because the simon pulse books are actually very good. That's why I was so excited to read this one because this was the first one that came out and I assumed that it would be the best one. I was in for a surprise because althrought reading the book, I got very irritated and even skipped some pages just so I could finish the book already.
First, I had never been much of a fan of the style of writing that involves the lead character babbling to us in the first point of view. A lot of books do that in order to establish the lead character as quirky, fun, intelligent etc. In most books, it does the job alright. However, in this book, it was overdone (in my opinion) and became a major source of my irritation.
Second. The love story wasn't as well-developed. I buy these books for the ROMANCE. However, the only really romantic scene wasn't even that romantic. Instead of romance, I got mostly angst.
Third. I liked the leading man but he played a really small part in the book.
I did like the originality of the plot although the plot was pretty weak and had a lot of holes.
interesting book.......2006-01-28
Jo O'Connor is constantly moving, so when she finally is in a place she loves, she is not exactly excited about leaving. In one last visit to her friends, she creates quite a fiasco and spends the next couple of months trying to settle things down. This book was interesting, but even so, i found myself skimming over some sections as the dialogue got a little dull and irrelevant to the actual plot of the story. though the story was a little hard to believe at times, it was a fun read, and I enjoyed seeing how Jo was going to get out of the mess she had created.
How NOT to Spend Your Senior Year.......2006-01-11
"Softly, almost tentatively, their lips touched. I wonder what she's feeling, I thought as I felt my own lips begin to tingle. I think that was the moment I acknowledged the truth. I had fallen, hopelessly, for Alex Crawford," (pg. 32). How NOT to Spend Your Senior Year is an absolute must-read. It combines romance, comedy, and even finds a way to mix in a thriller side. In the beginning, the reader is introduced to the murder mystery. On the happy side of things, we meet two major characters and their love at first sight experience. The story heats up with two fake deaths. Finally, the book ends with a heartfelt kiss and a new romance.
Jo O'Conner is hardly a normal teenager. All her life she has wondered why her small family (her father and she) has always moved to a new house practically every month. It does not end there either. They have moved all across the country. When she finds herself at a new school again in modern-day Seattle, Washington and meets the guy of her dreams, she knows she's into something good. Alex, a "Big Man On Campus," in just one day, shows Jo the meaning of love at first sight. The two of them connect immediately but are torn apart a few hours later. Their tale is one that captures the reader almost right after reading the first line.
Cameron Dokey wrote this book very well. She makes it easy to picture what is happening and what the characters look like. Her novel is written very realistically with real high school life and classes. How NOT to Spend Your Senior Year does not have a lot of characters to keep track of or any confusing plots or scenes. Also, other books seem to grasp the sense that love was in the air, but this one explains how it starts and what exactly keeps it alive. One thing about Cameron Dokey's writing is that she wrote the dialogue in the book in words that high schoolers would use when they were talking to other teenagers and not adult wording. How NOT to Spend Your Senior Year is similar to Niki Burnham's novels, but Cameron Dokey presents her work with greater description and feelings.
I loved every minute of reading this book and would recommend it to any teenager who likes romantic comedies. I say this because teenagers would understand high school life better than younger children and also because of the fact that this book contains slightly teenage themes. It is a quick read and is not too hard to get through. The novel never becomes boring. Overall, I would say this book deserves five out of five stars.
Cameron Dokey's How NOT to Spend Your Senior Year is a must-read romantic comedy that you have to read soon. If you do not, you are missing out on a great novel.
How Not To Spend Your Senior Year .......2006-01-07
Okay, this book wasn't all that bad. It was a bit unbelievable and fake, but overall the writing was cute and funny and the characters actually made sense. The ending was good, because I actually didn't expect Jo and Alex to... okay, I won't give away the ending. But I'm just glad it ended the way it did. But the book comes about a quarter of a way to crossing the line between "happy and well-written" and "Boring with no sense of taste." But after some of the reviews that I've read, I actually enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

Not worth the money........2000-05-11
I had to buy this book for a forensic anthropology course. The book is a series of scientific articles about skeletal biology that at times can be interesting, but are overall dry. This is probably a classic medical book - tough language, deep concepts, hard to understand in general.

Book Description
WAKING WALT is a spellbinding take on one of America s most enduring urban legends. Could it be true; Walt Disney was never cremated and buried at Forest Lawn as the official story goes? Imagine that, for nearly 40 years, the great entertainment genius has been in cryonic suspension, waiting to return when a cure for his lung cancer is found. Now, an experimental drug being tested looks like the answer. The waiting is almost over. Then, disaster strikes! In a d
Customer Reviews:
Waking Walt will keep you awake at night.......2006-06-19
I had the pleasure of reading Waking Walt recently. I was not familiar with the Disney legend that Walt was cryogenically frozen. I am also not a Disney theme park fan. Yet, Larry Pontius's book kept me riveted to the pages and caused a few very sleepy days at work. It is a well-paced detective style thriller. Characters are well-developed. Walt was represented as a crusty, impatient man who people loved because of his genius and in spite of his flaws. This book would make a great summer read. It is a true page-turner.
reality and creativity.......2005-08-13
We all have heard stories of Walt Disney being cryopreserved, but wait for this story. It takes that premise and grows into a fast paced mystery/adventure. You get the feeling that Larry knows Walt and knows the inside scoop. It definitely is an enjoyable read.
A humorous, thought provoking page turner........2005-07-18
Waking Walt is thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. The story line is fast paced yet easy to follow while still tossing in a curve or two so as not to be too predictable. The character traits and frozen in time prejudices assigned to Walt Disney are wonderfully conceived. As "Uncle Walt" spends some time in the present day his narrow-minded views expand to a more realistic, modern point of view. While his perceptions alter appropriately in regards to women and other races/cultures, he thankfully retains his old fashioned ideas regarding the lack of a moral compass that is prevalent in society in general and Disney World in particular.
A treat for Disney Enthusiasts!.......2005-04-07
The premise of the book is that Walt Disney was cryogenically frozen before his lung cancer would kill him (as rumors and urban legends have proposed) and is waiting for a cancer cure so that he can come back and reclaim his kingdom (as in Magic Kingdom). The poorly run Disney company is in a shambles and a hostile take over bid threatens to rip the company into small edible pieces. So, a circle of friends decides to thaw out the legend and treat him with an experimental drug. Then Walt is thrown into a world 40 years into the future where he laments things such as men on the moon, and the poor state of the Disney company, theme parks, and films.
It is an interesting story line and there were some very enjoyable moments as Walt got to experience Disney World for the first time in tow with a car load of teenagers who do not know who he is and insult the Disney food, the Disney employees attitude, and the theme park experience. Those parts are good fun.
However, there was an often distracting preoccupation with alcohol and drinking in this book, which could have been left out without causing harm to the story. Also, I had trouble connecting with the characters in this story (other than Walt), but found the premise too interesting to stop reading. It had a great premise and should have been explored long ago. I would recommend it to Walt Disney enthusiasts and science-fiction fans looking for an entertaining read.
The story you always wanted to read.......2005-04-03
This book tells the story that every Disney fan wonders about: what if the legend that Walt Disney was cryogenically frozen were true? The plot begins with a group of old men called "The Circle", who have been guarding Walt's secret and have found a doctor with an experimental cure for cancer. It's an amazing moment when they actually revive Walt, and spend time catching up on history with him - everything from man on the moon to Vietnam. At the same time, there's huge problems at the Walt Disney Company with a hostile takeover on the horizon, so there are hit men out after the group, making this a bit of a spy story as well! The story is well written and has lots of twists and turns, but the best chapters are filled with Walt telling stories, sneaking scotch, going fishing, and the moment of all moments - Walt visiting Epcot! The author was a former Disney executive, so the details scattered throughout the book are accurate and interesting. The other characters in the book are interesting, too, especially Harry, who "inherits" his place in the Circle and ends up as the receiver of a true Willy Wonka moment. Even though the pacing bogs down in places, this is a great story that really presents Walt in a truthful light, yet still honors his genius.
Book Description
Steve Wynn is the former owner of the Bellagio — Las Vegas’s latest monument to conspicuous consumption whose hotel and casino contain over $300 million in fine art and $1.5 billion in Wall Street money. He’s a mogul whose empire at one point included the Mirage, the Golden Nugget, and Treasure Island. But how did he gain and wield his tremendous power in Nevada? And why did a confidential Scotland Yard report prevent him from opening a casino in London? When this biography, written by a local reporter, was first released in 1995, Steve Wynn brought suit against its original publisher and forced him into bankruptcy. Now available in paperback, the inside story of the biggest phenomenon to roil Las Vegas since Hoover Dam gives readers an intimate glimpse at the real business that’s conducted beyond the gaming tables.
Customer Reviews:
focuses on facts, not perceptions.......2007-07-08
This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know more about the character of the man who is Steve Wynn. It is a true account of the way he has conducted himself over his history in Vegas and Atlantic City, not the image projected of him by Steve Wynn and his company. It is well written and concise. John L. Smith does an excellent job presenting the information, including several of the more uncanny incidents Steve Wynn has been involved in over the years by merely presenting the facts as they happened. He asks some very good questions that should have been asked but never were because of who the man is. He also points out numerous things that have been glazed over by the press and various agencies involved. Very informative. A definite must read.
Wynn Tries to Supress The Book.......2007-03-05
So damaging to his super clean image, Wynn drove the original publisher into bancruptcy and tried everything he could manage to keep this book out of circulation. Steve Wynn vs. the First Amendment (1st 1, Wynn 0).
Certainly did improve Vegas by leaps and bounds, but at what cost? Using public water to build his exclusive Shadow Creek golf course, buying art, jets and NY condos with stockholders money as the stock sank into takeover waters, untimately being shown the door by casino magnate Kirk Kerkorian. Once owned by MGM, things changed. The golf course was opened, the art, NY condo and jet all sold.
How does one man undermine Federal law to build a dolphin attraction? he is on film meeting with a known mobster who used his Atlantic City casino (Golden Nugget) to launder money, but can't seem to remember anything about it.
Fact: the son of a Bino Hall operator rises up to be one of the worlds leading casino developers and owners through some very shady associations. He influences Nevada politics as all people with money are able to, so no surprise there. The mob associations are clearly documented and associating with a convicted felon (Milken) is grounds for losing your gaming license, yet Wynn does so with impunity.
Wynn has brought some great changes to Las Vegas, but after reading the other sidie of the story, you have to ask yourself if the ends justify the means.
John L. Smith has done a great job with the facts surrounding Steve Wynn. Hat's off to him!
Inside scoop on Steve Wynn's Vegas.......2007-02-19
This book is a real page turner. It is amazing it ever got printed, given Wynn's many attempts to strangle the unflattering portrayal it in its infancy. That in itself is reason enough to pick it up and study it.
Fascinating Read.......2005-05-25
I'm not sure how true all of the "accusations" / "observations" are about the infamous Mr. Wynn, but the book is extremely well written. Paired with the "Green Felt Jungle" (another excellent book) you will be hard-pressed to put these two books down. I would recommend this book to everyone.
A true story about today's Las Vegas.......2005-05-01
(...) Steve Wynn is truly a fascinating guy and his story needs to be fully told to appreciate his diverse talents, "associations," and background. Running Scared tells the brutal truth about a facinating Vegas character. Thank goodness the mob was run out of Vegas years ago!

Book Description
Jacob de Gheyn's 'Exercise of Armes' was an immense success when first published in 1607. It is a fascinating seventeenth-century military manual, designed to instruct contemporary soldiers how to handle arms effectively, and correctly, and it makes for a unique glimpse into warfare as waged in the Thirty Years War and the English Civil War. The manual uses illustrations to clearly demonstrate drills for soldiers employing calivers and muskets. It shows how to load and fire, or merely carry, a matchlock piece. In addition detailed illustrations show the various movements and postures to be adopted during use of the pike. There are 117 illustrations contained in this book and all are fine examples of seventeenth-century art. Each image is detailed and evocative and students of military history and military costume are sure to find them of immense interest. Jacob de Gheyn's manual is an important insight into how the armies of Europe operated in the field in the seventeenth century, but it is also an attractive book of considerable charm and character.
Customer Reviews:
A reprint of an old sergeant's drill manual.......2004-01-05
This book contains Jacob De Gheyn's (1565-1629) engravings covering the drills of three different weapons: caliver (a light smooth-bore gun), musket (a heavy smooth-bore gun), and pike (a 4-5 m long spear). For each weapon De Gheyn gives pictures of each step of their official drill.
This book is for a very specialized audience. Apart from a two-page introduction it doesn't have anything other than the woodcuts. If you are looking for an indepth insight on warfare in the 30-Year War era, this is not the right book.
However, if you are interested in high-quality pictures of the 17th century soldiers brandishing their weapons, then this is the right book.

"In one key respect, the way the story of the United States has been told for the past one hundred years is wrong," writes Michael Novak. "To read most philosophers and historians of the American polity today is to learn that America is an historical embodiment of secular philosophy, the Enlightenment." Nothing could be further from the truth, says Novak, who sets out to demonstrate just how important religious faith was to the founders. He makes a spirited case, noting, for example, that the very first act of the First Continental Congress, in 1774, was to make a public prayer. Of the 3,154 "citations in the writings of the founders," 34 percent are to the Bible. He provides dozens of similar examples. On Two Wings does not proceed as a traditional narrative; Novak favors extensive block quotations from his sources and conveys a whole chapter in question-and-answer format. In addition, a major part of the book is an appendix that provides brief sketches of the lesser-known founders. What the book lacks in narrative elegance it makes up for in forceful argument-- it pulls off the trick of being both brief and thorough. Readers who admire Founding Brothers by Joseph Ellis will appreciate this book, especially if they are religiously inclined. --John Miller
Book Description
In this book, Novak probes the innermost convictions of Washington, Jefferson, Madison and the others who helped the American eagle to take wing. He shows how they were able to find common ground by appealing to the God of the Hebrews. He traces what happened to this Hebrew metaphysics as the world of the founders became the world of modernity.

I did not read but gave the book as a gift.......2007-09-06
This was given as a gift to someone so I've not read the book, but I knew the person was very interested in getting a copy.
Brilliant!.......2003-02-04
We seem to be surrounded today by drum beaters who have wrongly interpreted the intentions of the nation's founders regarding religion. Novak decisively eradicates the false theories being pushed on our society, even by our own judicial system.
Novak superbly presents the case that the founders intent was not to eradicate religious belief, but rather to avoid divisions of religious sentiment and find common ground among the Hebrew and Christian faiths.
When examining the founders, many fail to recognize what life was like under the Anglican Establishment, which the founders sought to end. While against the national establishment of a secular religion, the founder's even supported the state establishment of such.
While the first half of the book examines the intent of the founders, the second half takes a look at some of the founders often overlooked by historians for their religious views.
Overall, this book is clear and accurate. I was thoroughly impressed by the authors' research. The book reads extremely well. I only had two complaints about the book, I wished it were another thousand pages, as I absolutely did not want this book to end, and the font size was a little small, making it difficult for us old codgers.
This is a book I will keep on the bookshelf by my desk, as I am sure I will reference this magnificent work often. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone interested in learning the true intent behind the Jefferson metaphor of separation of church and state.

One Winged Birds Can't Fly.......2002-12-11
One-winged birds can't fly. That's why Michael Novak, the author of "On Two Wings," asserts that the history of the United States has been taught incorrectly for the past 100 years. The American Republic took flight on two healthy wings, one called Faith and the other called Reason. American history, as taught now in our schools, would have students believe our Founders set flight with one wing only: Reason.
Novak, the George Frederick Jewett Scholar in Religion, Philosophy, and Public Policy and Director of Social and Political Studies at the American Enterprise Institute, makes a strong case for both wings working together. But today the wing of Faith is the one too severely clipped to work as it should.
For instance, most people today believe that the Enlightenment was more critical to the American Founders than the Old Testament. The historical record shows that it was the Old Testament that was far more important than the Enlightenment.
That's because the Founders held a "Hebrew metaphysic," which included the concepts of time having a beginning and an end, and of final judgment in the hereafter for human actions in this life. The Founders agreed with the Hebrews, that time is linear, not cyclical, as the ancient pagans believed. And the Declaration refers to God as "the Supreme Judge of the world."
This "metaphysic" - a mix of theology and philosophy - gave the Founders a wonderful nomenclature in which to express political ideas. The Founders wisely shunned specific theological terms, such as Savior, Trinity, Father, Son, Holy Spirit, and used instead the imagery of the Old Testament. In this way, they charted a course for common ground. This book should be required reading in college political science programs.
On Two Wings: Humble Faith and Common Sense at the American.......2002-07-22
Citizens who have been led to believe that the Founding Fathers intended to establish a republic free from religion need to read this book and the cited sources. From Jefferson to the Presbyterian minister Witherspoon (who was president of Princeton), all believed that religon and the unfettered public worship of God was vital to a free and moral society. Read this book and learn what the men who fashioned our form of goverment really believed. It's not what the revisionists would have us think.

Book Description
Human impact on natural landscapes through urbanization and agricultural expansion are becoming more and more dramatic and are the cause of serious environmental problems. This volume examines the effect of landscape disturbance on plant and animal diversity in the five mediterranean-climate regions of the world. It begins with three introductory chapters broadly reviewing the issues of landscape degradation. Further contributions describe regional land use conflicts in each of the five regions. Landscape disturbance and plant diversity, and landscape disturbance and animal diversity are treated in separate chapters. Four contributions deal with demography and ecophysiology in vegetation succession following disturbance. The volume closes with a consideration of the future addressing aspects of environmental politics.
