This study is a careful and refreshing evaluation of the long-held views of Darwinism and Neo-Darwinism and the views of those who consider "punctuated equilibrium" to be the best explanation of the existing world of living beings. Darwinists and Neo-Darwinists hold that organisms are able to respond to only minor fluctuations in their environment. This view has come under increasing criticism, in large part because there is no evidence for gradualism in the fossil record.

Great book.......2001-12-08

This book takes an in-depth lookat genetic variation found in nature. The authors examine the evidence from all the different sides, compare the different theories on the issue, e.g, Darwinism, Punctuated Equilbrium, and Creation. I have read books and articles on this subject from Mayr, Gould, Stanley, Mendel, and others. This book ranks right up there in quality. Moreover it is even better in same cases as it doesn't push its dogma down your throat like some others do, but allows the reader to make up his own mind.

Take a look at this book if you have ever had any questions about speciation or biological variaiton. You may find this book hard to get a hold of but it is well worth it. Definite 5 star book.

Good book, very technical.......1998-09-07

This book was a good defense against both Darwinism and punctuated equilibrium. This was the first book I read on the subject of evolution, and although it was a bit technical, it was very explanatory. It is a good book to give to your biology professor or someone who wants a good defense of creationism without unscientific remarks. It was written by two very qualified doctorates in biology and genetics. I would like to see an evolutionist try and analyze this book for its "unscientific" behavior, which many evolutionists claim against creationists.

What tragedy has her so distraught? Her parents have told her she's moving to New Zealand just when she's managed to snog (kiss--look it up in the glossary) the SG (Sex God, a.k.a Robbie). This is of course not the only source of drama in Georgia's eventful life. Her half Scottish wildcat, Angus, who is the size of a small Labrador, herds the poodles next door and terrorizes the neighborhood. Her little sister, Libby, who is slightly mad, stores her "pooey knickers" and her scuba-diving Barbie doll in Georgia's bed. Her mother (from whom she inherited her orangutan eyebrow gene and possibly her "gigantic basoomas") is clearly inhabiting Earth solely to make her life miserable, and even her best friend Jas is "half girl, half turnip."

Despite the fact that she's spared from going to "Kiwi-a-gogo land," things don't get much better for Georgia. She's suspended for a childish prank right before her dad returns from New Zealand, she falls in love with the SG who dumps her for being too young, and Dave, the "red-herring" boyfriend she's using to make the SG jealous calls her a "heartless whatsit." And, she continues, "the spot on my bum is probably a boil. I wonder what Buddha would do now?" Rennison's comedic timing is brilliant. Adolescent angst ("I hope I am not driven to the brink of madness by grief") vanishes less than an hour later ("Angus can fetch sticks!!!") and sometimes even sooner. I loved it! I loved the fact that she is such a self absorbed teenager - the fact that her sister crawls into bed with all her toys including scuba diving Barbie - the fact that her legs go all gelloid - the fact that her friends are just like her - the fact that every adult has at least one fault - the fact that French toast means talking French while eating eggy toast, but best of all, the fact that I thought just like her when I was a teenager :-) The only bad part was laughing aloud when I was driving - and not wanting it to end when I pulled into my driveway.

How do you deal with the emotional rollercoaster of catching the Sex God, and then losing him? That's what the main character, Georgia Nicolson, has to try and get through. Georgia is a 14 year old girl living in England (in the present day). The book starts out with Georgia living out her perfect dream. She is he girlfriend of a SEX GOD. But soon, she loses him o her enemy, Wet Lindsey. In an effort to get him back, she starts dating one of the Sex God's friends, David the Laugh. Throughout the confusion of that she has to deal with her poodle attacking cat, her (married) mother flirting with Dr. "George Clooney", and some definitely air-headed friends.

This is my favorite book I have ever read. But, I do have a favorite part in particular. You have to understand though, I had been laid over in the Kansas City Airport for 6 hours and I was completely sleep deprived. Anyways, my favorite part is when Georgia described how her little sister was sitting on her lap and she "let off the smelliest, loudest fart known to humanity. It came out of her bum-oly with such force that she lifted off my knee. Like a hovercraft".

After reading this book, it is clear to see that the main idea of this book is just learning how to deal with growing up and moving past the obstacles that life throws at you. You have to make all the wrong choices to finally see why the good choice is the best choice.

I loved how the problems Georgia went through were not only hysterical, but could also be recognized by all. The only thing that I would change about the book would be the format. I don't really like the whole diary-entry format. I believe that girls between the ages of 11-17 should read this book. They would relate to the trials and triumphs of Georgia the best.

On the Bright Side, I'm now the Girlfriend of a Sex God:further confessions of Georgia Nicolson is a book about a teenager named Georgia Nicolson. This book is her diary in which she writes exactly how she feels. Georgia has a rather large cat, Angus, a bestfriend who overly obsesses over her boyfriend Tom, and a Sex God (a.k.a Robbie Tom's older brother). All in all Georgia lives an exciting life which makes for a terrific book.
My favorite part of this book is when Georgia is running out to the field and she just lets everything go. She wasn't worrying about how her nose looked or who could see her. I loved this part because she was finally just being herself. Also, she didn't care about what people thought about her anymore.
I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a good laugh. However, if you're looking to read a little at a time I wouldnt read this book. This book is the kind of book that once you start reading you can't stop. It is a hilarious teenager reality and no one can go wrong by choosing this book.

Good Teen Lit.......2007-04-25

Pretty much the same basic premiss as _Angus_ but spanning a shorter period of time. I do like how the books aren't just about Georgia and her SG (that's sex god to the rest of us) but shows how she deals with her friends and her family. I still hope I wasn't like her when I was growing up though.

Very enjoyable--picks up right after the first book, same problems are haunting our lovely heroine, Georgia: Robbie being difficult about her age, Jas being completely sucked into her boyfriend Tom, her parents being weird, her mad little sister and now Angus is love sick!

Too funny and too much fun--now if only the library would get the third one in so I could read it too. Still pretty tame language, etc. Suitable for a 14 year old (as that's hold old Georgia is) there is some teen related issues, but they are dealt with like a standard 14 year old--making fun of them.

Totally fun read.

I read the book "On the Bright Side, I'm now the Girlfriend of a Sex God." This book is the sequel to the book "Angus, Thongs, and Full-Frontal Snogging." It is a book with a main character of Georgia Nicolson.
This book starts out with Georgia being very happy about finally dating the Sex God. (A.K.A. Robbie) She thinks everything is going great between them, but then the awful happens. Robbie says that he can't date her anymore because of the age difference between them and that it was over. Georgia was heartbroken. While in her mothers room one day, she came across a book that tells you all about how to get a guy. She reads it with her friends and finally thinks of a plan to get Robbie back. One night Georgia goes to a club with all of her friends with a plan that if she starts dating another guy, it will make Robbie jealous and want her back. She starts dating someone that everybody calls Dave the Laugh. Georgia is seeing him for a while and Dave seems to really be starting to like her. Suddenly, Georgia's plan works and all of a sudden, Robbie is interested in her again. Robbie tells Georgia that he tried to forget about her, but it just didn't work. Georgia breaks things off with Dave the Laugh so that she can be with Robbie again.
My favorite part of this book was when Georgia and her friends were in the club when Georgia was trying to get Dave the Laugh to like her. Georgia's friend Jas completely embarrasses her when she goes over to talk to Dave the Laugh by saying that Georgia liked him. Everything worked out in the end of the book. What I especially liked about ready this book is that while reading it, it truly makes you laugh out loud.

Albert Schweitzer - Spiritual Man of the Century.......2000-02-20

Although I am a scientist and I appreciate Einstein being chosen as Man of the Century, I feel that Albert Schweitzer would have been a more compelling choice. It is true that Einstein represents the science and technology that is taking us at a breathless pace into the new millenium. But just where is is taking us?

Schweitzer's scholarship in medicine, music, and religion could easily have led him to a highly successful academic career at a university. But he did not choose this path. Rather, he put his knowledge of medicine to use at a primitive level by serving natives in a remote part of Africa. It was a courageous, soulworthy decision. For that reason it is worth learning everything we can about this man whose mind was capable of such unique comprehension and action.

I am very grateful that Norman Cousins put his editorial skills to use in selecting words of Albert Schweitzer to pass on to us. Cousins is correct in the Introduction when he says "The greatness of Schweitzer rests not just on what he has done but on what other have done because of him."

The words in the text are classified under six headings: Knowledge and Discovery, Reverence for Life, Faith, The Life of the Soul, The Musician as Artist, and Civilization and Peace. Also, an excerpt is given from Schweitzer's 1952 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech.

The quotations range from humorous to subline; from "An organ is like a cow; one does not look at its horns so much as at its milk," to "The history of our time is characterized by a lack of reason which has no parallel in the past." It is a fearsome accusation for a generation that prides itself on the good job it has done in harnessing reason to science. Schweitzer further reflects that "we have sought to live and to carry on with a civilization which has no ethical principle behind it."

With the example of Schweitzer's life of dedication and service we can perhaps see a glimmering of the ethical principle that is missing in today's world. By living a life of sacrifice and service, his soul grows steadfastly without bound.

Wonderful introduction to the great humanitarian........1998-03-05
