The Wisdom of Wolves : Nature's Way to Organizational Success(revised)
ASIN: 0964687240
Release Date: 2000-04-01 |
Product Description
In the landmark book, The Wisdom of Wolves: Natures Way to Organizational Success, Dr. Twyman Towery developed a unique concept that is expanded upon in this chronicle of the majestic eagle, an animal that has been greatly revered throughout history. The eagle has been celebrated by countless civilizations from ancient times to the present as a symbol of power, strength, and courage.
Customer Reviews:
The power of eagles will really bring out the power in you.......2003-01-20
Well, let's cut to the point here. It's a good book. It's got a great idea to it. It uses Eagles as a metaphor, to relate the way they live their lives to our own individual accomplishment in our lives. This is the second book I have read of Towery's. The first one I read was the Wisdom of Wolves. Towery divides the books into chapters on several different topics - symbolism, vision, celebration, mentoring, teamwork - and so on and so forth. They are all very general topics.
I didn't like how Towery was quoting 7 year olds and such alike saying stuff like - 'When I think of the eagle, I always think of my dad because he's going places.' I really didn't see a point to this.
But I will use it for various papers I write at uni, and I thank you Mr.Towery for writing this book - very interesting indeed. Your writing is on a personal basis - and I suppose thats what made me buy the second book. I appreciate your personal signature at the beginning of the books too! Keep up the good work!
An interesting concept. Give it a try.

Book Description
The Periplus Adventure guides do precisely what a great travel book should do- make you want to get up and go! Periplus adventure guides show you how to get there, and then help make the absolute most out of a stay, leaving no stone, no beach, no fine restaurant or mountain trail untried. With detailed, up-to-date maps, photographs-both new and archival- personal recommendations and inside tips from expert authors, the guides go well beyond the usual travel fare and offer an extraordinary value for the money.
This fall, Periplus proudly offers nine additions to the Adventure Guide list, exploring some of the most breathtaking, historically important and lesser known regions of Indonesia and Malaysia and Singapore. These include an updated guide to the exotic volcanic island of Bali; the flora and fauna-rich rainforests of East Malaysia and Brunei; the little known islands of Nusa Tenggara that lie East of Bali from Lombok to Timor; the center of the Indonesian archipelago, Java, rich in Buddhist tradition; the primitive and wildlife-filled province of Kalimanatan: Indonesian Borneo, home to the fascinating Dyak culture; Maluku: Indonesian Spice Islands, a sun-drenched string of pearl like islands in the tropical sea of Eastern Indonesia; the truly wild, mountainous island of Sulawesi-for which this is the only guidebook available; Sumatra, home of mighty rivers, sparkling highland lakes and lush tropical rain forests; and the most comprehensive guide to West Malaysia and Singapore ever produced.
Customer Reviews:
One of the Best in the Series.......2004-03-22
This book contains excellent background information on Java and descriptions of both its major highlights and obscure attractions - particularly archeological remains and national parks - written by a team of expert authors along with photos of stunnning quality.
Practical information is found separately in the back of the book, and is somewhat dated but still adequate.
Highly recommended, even as a 2nd guidebook if you already have a general Indonesia guide stronger on practical details like Lonely Planet or Rough Guide.

A fantastic reference for Java.......2002-07-09
It would be hard to get lost with this map at your disposal. Large in scale and completely up to date, this map makes it easy to find your way around one of the most diverse and beautiful islands on the planet. The road references can be missleading in that weather conditions play a big part in their passablility, but the map should not be held responsible for that. If you are heading to Indonesia, take this map along.

Book Description
This book is a wide-ranging study of the varieties of gamelan music in contemporary Java seen from a regional perspective. The focus of most studies of Javanese music has been limited to the court-derived music of Surakarta and Yogyakarta, but Sutton goes beyond these to consider also gamelan music of Banyumas, Semarang, and East Java as separate regional traditions with distinctive repertories, styles and techniques of performance, and conceptions about music. Suttonâs description of these traditions, illustrated with numerous musical examples in Javanese cipher notation, is based on extensive field experience in these areas and is informed by the criteria that Javanese musicians judge to be most important in distinguishing them. Whatever the extent to which regional traditions now blend and spread beyond their area of origin, Sutton maintains that regional differences persist in contemporary Java not as vestigial curiosities, but rather as deep-rooted aesthetic differences that reflect varied perceptions of regional cultural identity. The book contains numerous illustrations of performing groups and cultural events, a glossary, and discography.

From the supplier: Religious identity is becoming more significant in daily interactions between Muslims and Christians in a Javanese village, as Islam has become more central to the everyday lives of Muslims. Religious differences are becoming a source of social conflict, and the Muslim and Christian communities have been clearly demarcated. The two groups had mostly harmonious relations until recently.

Book Description
Like any self-respecting girl her age, Jess wants to be devastatingly gorgeous, popular, and intelligent. But unfortunately, her best friend, Flora, has beaten her to it. Now Jess needs a new focus. The stunningly gorgeous Ben Jones seems the obvious choice. But can Ben Jones focus on anything that takes longer than a free kick? Perhaps Fred, who's sweet and clever but really needs a haircut, will help Jess through her teen-life crisis. But what of Flora's long-held secret crush? With her particular combination of charm and insanity, Jess heroically tries to keep it all together—with hilarious results.
Customer Reviews:
Hilarious Book........2007-01-17
I absolutely loved this book. I read it until 4:00 a.m.
Think of it more as a comic book (well, it's not) rather than a piece of literature. You will laugh through it and certainly enjoy it a lot.
Absolutely Hillarious!.......2006-08-10
This is one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. It's full of laugh-out-loud humour...yes, I was actually laughing out loud!
The story is about Jess, a budding comedienne who has been trying without success to gain the affection of her long-time crush, Ben. Unfortunately, she is constantly being overshadowed by her "perfect" friend Flora. As a result, she'll go to any lengths to get his attention, including stuffing her bra with minestrone soup-filled bags! The result is a whole lot of craziness and laughs.
This book is definitely insane and charming. While some of the events seem a little too crazy to be real, you will definitely get a kick out of reading about them.
Charming and Insane!.......2006-07-04
That's excatly how the book was. A great read, and very real. I had a great time reading this book, and at one part, was nearly dying of laughter! (The part where Jess goes to the band's rehearsal). A Fabulous book recommended for everyone.
Insanely charming is more like it.......2006-02-05
Jess doesn't quite think about things like your typical girl would. When presented with a flat chest (as many of us have been, especially early on, when it seems everyone else's has exploded into WonderBra status), she decides to make some "filler" ... out of minestrone soup. Now, some of us might have had the same thought...but with soup? Of course, things go a bit awry as a boy that Jess isn't even crushing on manages to squeeze her a bit too tight at a party and the soup quickly explodes into his face.
Jess thinks she's done for. How could anyone live down a soup bra? But then she finds out the rumor is she'd thrown up on the boy. Ah, sweet relief. (?) But then, the really bad news comes out. A boy at the party had put a camera in the girl's loo and they're going to have a showing! Everyone is coming!
Yes. The same loo in which Jess had run after her embarrassing soup explosion and not only taken off her shirt (!), but had also talked to her breasts. Not that she'll ever talk to them again, not after this.
That's the way things go in Jess' life. Things are further complicated by her beautiful but mostly humble friend Flora, her crush - the scrumptious Ben (who seems pretty oblivious) and her best guy friend, Fred (of the terrible hair). Will Jess find true love and manage to stay out of trouble? Will her feminist mother even allow her to utter the "boyfriend" word?
Jess is a truly delightful and quirky character with a great sense of humor and perfect comic timing...if only anyone would appreciate it. I highly recommend this one for readers aged 12 and up and anyone that likes Brit fiction with a cutting comic edge. I just hope there's a sequel coming.
--[...]
Very entertaining.......2006-01-04
This book is hilarious and entertaining, while not to grown-up like Gossip Girl or The A-List. It is placed in Britain and is about a girl who finds her self like the title, charming but insane and truly is both. She goes through phases with her best friend Flora about hating her and loving her at the same time. Also trying to get the love of her life to notice her. This is highly recommended on my list of books.

Primates in Perspective

Primate Conservation Biology
ASIN: 038725854X |
Book Description
The purpose of this volume is to present a comprehensive overview of recent advances in primate field research, ecology, and conservation biology in Mesoamerica. The overall goal of each contribution is to integrate newly collected field data with theoretical perspectives drawn from evolutionary biology, socioecology, biological anthropology, and conservation to identify how our current knowledge of primate behavior and ecology has moved beyond more traditional approaches. A corollary to this, and an important goal of the volume is to identify geographical regions and species for which we continue to lack sufficient information, to develop action plans for future research, and to identify areas for immediate conservation action. Despite many decades of primate research in Mesoamerica, much is still unknown concerning the basic ecology and behavior of these species, demography, current distribution, and conservation status of local populations, and the effectiveness of conservation policies on primate survivorship. Four major areas of research are the focus of the volume: Evolutionary Biology and Biogeography; Population Demography and Ecology; Behavior; and Conservation and Management Policies.

Book Description
This monograph is a contribution to the theory of encompassing. It formalizes the idea that a model should be able to explain the result to obtained by other, rival models. From the properties of the encompassing relation established here, it follows that encompassing can be used as a simplifying device in empirical model buiding. As concerns statistical inference, encompassing is shown to induce the robust approach towards parametric inference, and to unify the theories of nested and non-nested hypotheses testing.

Mozart's last opera, the simultaneously comic and serious fairy tale The Magic Flute (Die Zauberfloete), is as problematic as anything in the medium. Some deplore it for its perceived sexism and racism; some deplore it for its arguably goofy plot. "Depending on your perspective," writes David Foil in his essay in this book, it "is either the silliest opera ever written or a work of profound insight that happens to be dressed in the trappings of a cartoon." That it is Mozart's sublime music that ennobles something meant to be merely a short-lived popular entertainment is not in question.
This volume, issued by Black Dog Opera Library, puts together Foil's essay, lots of pictures, a complete libretto (with running commentary) in English and German, and a classic recording on two compact discs in one comfortably priced hardcover package. It is a fine introduction to what remains a great opera, goofy plot or no. (And Bellini's plots aren't even goofier?) It is worth buying just for the now out-of-print EMI/Angel 1972 (remastered in 1987) recording, contained on two very long-playing CDs, found inside the front and back covers of the book. The dialogue portions work better in this version than in most recordings. Anneliese Rothenberger is an appealing Pamina, and Walter Berry is a delightful Papageno. Edda Moser nails the difficult music of the Queen of Night, while Kurt Moll is our day's definitive Sarastro. Wolfgang Sawallisch, brisk and never lugubrious, conducts his soloists and the Bavarian State Opera Chorus and Orchestra with total certainty.
Book Description
Long out of print, the many adaptations that Russell has done of famous operas are finally collected again in 3 volumes, in the wake of his highly successful massive recent adaptation of Wagner¹s Ring of the Nibelung. This first volume presents his adaptation of one of Mozart¹s most famous works, a farcical tale mixed with fantasy. The story begins as the Queen of the Night sets Prince Tamino on a quest to rescue her daughter, Pamina from the evil Sarastro. On the way, he meets the bird-catcher Papageno, who is ³persuaded² to help Tamino in his quest. Tamino¹s spiritual quest is counterpoised with Papageno¹s own earthly search for his one true love, Papagena. Both couples¹ strivings are juxtaposed with the eternal conflict between Sarastro and the Queen of the Night.

Great introduction for kids!.......2007-03-08
This is a great opera introduction for kids. The story is really easy to follow and the CD is a great addition. I highly recommend this for anyone.
Mozart's The Magic Flute.......2007-02-14
This was a wonderful story well written for a young audience. We bought it for our six-year-old son who began studying violin a year ago, and this was his one-year anniversary present. Mozart's Eine Kleine Nacht Musik was his inspiration to learn the violin, and he has since taken interest in other Mozart music. The illustrations are also very beautiful.
The Definitive Magic Flute.......2005-04-12
I'm usually dismissive of most Die Zauberflotes because I find the overall quality of the singers and recording lacking. Then I came upon this recording...I have to say that it is simply the most amazing Die Zauberflote I've ever heard! The orchestrations to the singers to the conductor himself...everything is mind-blowing! I'm not a Mozart person, but if I really like a recording of his I will buy it. This is an excellent way to introduce yourself to the Flute, especially since there is such a wonderful introduction accompanying this extremely famous opera. And the Queen of the Night-Edda Moser!!! Amazing! Simply amazing! No other Queen has conveyed that much drama into her singing. This is the Flute. I would suggest Marriner's version if I hadn't seen this one, but then here is a Flute with all the greats in it! Get it now!
A great way to learn about opera, suitable for young or old........2004-04-21
I received this as a gift from a mislead but well-meaning relative. Needless to say, I have never been a fan of opera. However, I was surprised that I was actually able to enjoy this book and accompanying CD. The book begins with a brief biography of Mozart, and then offers a prose overview of the story (extremely helpful for understanding!). The second half of the book contains the libretto, or text, of the opera. The original German forms one column on the left-hand side of each page, and the English translation is printed on the right. This way one can follow along with the story while listening to the music, even if you don't know a word of German. Throughout the entire book there are pictures from different stage performances of The Magic Flute. The musical recording is of high quality, contained on two disks that fit into pockets on the inside front and back cover of the book.
This would be a wonderful book for anyone interested in learning about opera, young or old. However, I must disagree with the reviewer who said this was geared toward children between three and seven. A 3-year-old would never be able to read the text, and a 7-year-old, unless very advanced, would no doubt struggle with it. The book is better suited for slightly older children all the way up through adults of any age. While I'm still not a fan of opera, I did gain some appreciation for it from this book and CD. I'm sure the only way to truly experience an opera is to see it performed live (just listening to a recording removes the entire visual element), but I would nevertheless recommend this product.
Wonderful story-telling.......2004-03-15
P. Craig Russell's drawing style seems especially apt for stories of enchanted lands and beings. His lines are light and airy, and he sets a mood nicely with color. In other words, he is ideally suited to illustrate this story.
He does a delightful job of it, too. He amplifies all of the characters theatrically beyond the believable, and has one small advantage over true opera - he is never at the mercy of the set designers, costumers, or other effects.
I am very glad to see this classic of western culture (and the others coming soon) made available in this format. I confess, I have not fully acquired the taste for opera, or the ability to derive the story from the way it is sung. I do, however, want to know at least a bit of the story, and this is a very digestible form. Russell's drawing makes it more than digestible, it's a real confection. I also appreciate the fact that Russell has adapted the story, and not created a new one from fragments of the classic.
Opera buffs - I hope you can accept this for what it is. One way to look at this is opera appreciation on training wheels, a painless entry into part of the operatic art. It's also a way to spread some knowledge of this classic across a generation that might not have been exposed to the story otherwise - certainly a good thing.
If nothing else, it's a well-drawn comic by a very capable artist. It's that "else" that makes this comic stand out. I'm looking forward to the next Russell operas.

A New Way to Look at Opera.......2006-03-09
This graphic novel is a wonderful way to tell the stories of operas. Operas have complex plots, bigger than life characters and lots of action. P. Craig Russell captures all of these in his graphic novels.
Great stories, great art.......2004-10-01
Opera is a grand tradition of musical story-telling. The repertoire includes many stories adapted from myth or mythic in themsleves.
Opera is also, I'm afraid, an acquired taste, and one that I have not acquired. That's part of the reason I'm so happy to see these adaptations in a form I can appreciate. Another part of the reason is that I just like Russell's art, no matter what story it tells.
Opera purists may object, but hey - it gets people like me interested in the stories, and that's a start. I have to admit, though, a little more background information would have made these extracts a bit easier to understand.
Classic stories and good visual rendering, a good combination. Enjoy!
