Very funny!.......2003-11-14
Mr. Loren Eyrich has a true Masterpiece here. He has compiled, as the title says, "Silly Signs and Offbeat Stuff from America's 2-Lane Roads." From his travels across America, he has photos of funny signs from virtually everywhere! One of my favorites is from Tarpon Springs, FL where someone is selling Sponges and a sign reads: "Please Pay Sponge Inside" and Mr. Eyrich writes: "Hey, that's not a very nice comment about your cashier!" :D ;)
Near the end of the book, Mr. Eyrich also provides readers with valuable information on how to take their own funny photos.
If you're looking for a good laugh, but this book!!

WHY NOT INCLUDE EXCERPTS OF THIS BOOK, IF YOU ARE SO PROUD OF IT!
This book is a must get- absolutely hilarious!.......1999-08-15
You know how they say you'll live an extra year each time you laugh? If that statement is true, one who reads this book will never die! This humorous book will have you laughing on end. If you're looking for a chuckle, you have got to check out "No Sleeping On Pavement."
Written for Comfort not for Speed.......1999-02-12
This is an very enjoyable book about what most of us would really love to do - slowly travel around America well off the beaten track of the Interstate Highways. Mr Eyrich has a charming way of describing the interesting people and places he encounters usually with humorous pictures attached. It is both a valuable reflection on the off-track America most of miss in our journeys on airplanes as well as an excellent guide for all travelers looking for something not found in the typical tour book.

Book Description
The power of molecular genectics has recently returned Developmental Biology to its original position at the forefront of biological research. The vertebrate eye, one of the classic embryologcial models, came back into the limelight. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the field of vertebrate eye development. The latest advances in delineating genetic hierarchies for eye development in animals are discussed, as well as their relationships to congenital disorders of the eye which affect humans. Since studies in Drosophila have provided significant insight, chapters on this invertebrate are included. In addition, a number of related areas are discussed which are unique to this book: developmental anatomy of the eye from the perspective of its optical function, recent advances in understanding how the retina connects to the brain, the role of extracellular matrix and cell adhesion molecules in eye development, and eye regeneration in amphibians and fish.

Book Description
This book is a single volume treatment of the descriptive inorganic and coordination chemistry of silver, gold and the six platinum metals - together with the organometallic chemistry of sigma-bonded compounds in normal oxidation states. It provides information on `essential' binary compounds and complexes of these elements, such as oxides, halides, aqua complexes, amines and tertiary phosphine complexes, highlighting key areas of study. The reference list, containing over 1600 entries, is intended to give key references (particularly to structures), both to the recent literature and to relevant older work. Literature coverage extends to Spring 1996. A concentrated source of information for chemists at graduate and research level, this volume is also suitable as a teaching resource for advanced undergraduates.

Book Description
For thousands of years the human race has been fascinated by gold. Initially gold was used extensively in coinage and jewellery but today the applications for gold are vast, ranging from metallurgy to physics, chemistry, biochemistry and medicine. Gold: Progress in Chemistry, Biochemistry and Technology is an extremely comprehensive work covering the history of gold, from the work of the early prospectors to the use of gold in decorative effects and dentistry. Further chapters present a complete overview of the current knowledge of gold technology from mineral deposits to technical applications and emphasise the developments in coordination, organometallic and cluster chemistry of gold and its applications in synthesis. An international group of contributors have reviewed the modern advances in the science of gold to produce the first comprehensive monograph reflecting the state of the art, the impact and applications of recent developments in gold research.

Book Description
Noble Metals and Biological Systems examines the relationship between noble metals (gold, silver, and platinum group metals) and biological systems. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 is concerned with the analytical chemistry of noble metals and includes a description of the latest methods of analysis. Part 2 describes such topics as ecology and environmental science of noble metals as they pertain to biogeochemical exploration, noble metals in hair, the environmental geochemistry of palladium, microorganisms and noble metals, animals and noble metals, and a general survey of noble metals in the environment. Coverage is comprehensive and includes information regarding the use of dogs and termites as field assistants in mineral prospecting, as well as the fascinating story of the "gold bug", a microorganism that plates itself with gold. Part 3 is devoted entirely to noble metals in the treatment of disease and includes chapters describing the use of osmium and gold for arthritis treatment, silver as a bactericide, and platinum and ruthenium as anticancer agents. Noble Metals and Biological Systems will provide fascinating reading for applied geochemists, environmentalists, public health specialists, ecologists, microbiologists, clinical biochemists, oncologists, and specialists in rheumatic diseases.

Book Description
Interest in the study of early European cultures is growing. These cultures have left us objects made of gold, other metals and ceramics. The advent of metal detectors, coupled with improved analytical techniques, has increased the number of findings of such objects enormously. Gold was used for economic and ceremonial purposes and thus the gold objects are an important key to our understanding of the social and political structures, as well as the technological achievements, of Bronze and Iron Age European societies.
A correct interpretation of the information provided by gold and other metal objects requires the cooperation of experts in the fields of social, materials and natural science. Detailed investigation of gold deposits in Europe have revealed the composition and genesis of the deposits as sources of the metal.
In
Prehistoric Gold in Europe, a group of leading European geoscientists, metallurgists and archaeologists discuss the techniques of gold mining and metallurgy, the socioeconomic importance of gold as coinage and a symbol of wealth and status, and as an indicator of religious habits, as well as a mirror of trade and cultural relations mirrored by the distribution and types of gold objects in prehistoric times.

Book Description
Visualization and mathematics have begun a fruitful relationship, establishing links between problems and solutions of both fields. In some areas of mathematics, like differential geometry and numerical mathematics, visualization techniques are applied with great success. However, visualization methods are relying heavily on mathematical concepts.Applications of visualization in mathematical research and the use of mathematical methods in visualization have been topic of an international workshop in Berlin in June 1995. Selected contributions treat topics of particular interest in current research. Experts are reporting on their latest work, giving an overview on this fascinating new area. The reader will get insight to state-of-the-art techniques for solving visualization problems and mathematical questions.
Book Description
Award-winning author Miriam Toews's first novel tells the heartwarming story of two young mothers who set off on an adventure all their own, relying on luck, pluck, and friendship
Eighteen-year-old Lucy and her flamboyant friend Lish are two of the single moms who live in Have-a-Life, a housing project for single mothers better known as Half-a-Life. Lucy has no idea who the father of her son is, while Lish still pines for the father of her twins. Fathers aren't around much at the project. They're mostly the kind of people whose heads get cut out of pictures.
Life is tough for Lucy and Lish: Little Red Wagons and cheap strollers are the only way to get to and from the grocery store, and it's hard to make ends meet. So when Lish suggests a harebrained road trip in search of the fire-eater, Lucy can't help but be excited. They borrow a van held together with coat hangers and electrical tape, load it up with kids and clothes, and hit the road. Lucy tells her story in a wry, bittersweet voice that marks her as a literary sister to Nomi Nickel, the beloved narrator of Toews's A Complicated Kindness.
"A comic take on what initially appears to be a most improbable topic for humor--and it works." (Globe and Mail)
Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2007-03-04
I loved, loved this book. Took me awhile to get through but only because I wanted to savour it. The first half of the book introduces each wacky character in Half-a-Life. The second half deals with Lish and Lucy's advenure to find Gotcha. This is a different, entertaining, and really cute book that I would read again and again.
Single mothers' Canadian club.......2006-12-22
Lucy, the first person narrator, and Lish are unwed mothers living in public housing in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a place where Fargo is considered the warm south. Lucy does not know the father of her child because "if you eat a whole can of beans how can you tell which one gave you gas." There are so many unfathered children in the building that their version of the alphabet song is "ABCDEFGHIJKalimony please". Both Lucy and Lish have difficult relationships with conventional respectable unsupportive (in the emotional sense) fathers of their own. These relationships form a faint thread of a plot, although the novel is largely made up of the intersecting stories of the other mothers in the building.
I was reminded of Adrian Leblanc's serious non-fiction "Random Family." That's a great book but Toew's is better, and actually contains more information about the singles mother's predicament, and offers more insight into her motivation, as well as being hilariously funny..
Once again we have a great Canadian female writer. Why is Canada the only country where a list of the top five writers cannot be made up that is not predominantly female?
Miriam Toew's First Novel is an unlikely vehicle for humour.......2000-05-11
Summer of My Amazing Luck, Miriam Toew's first novel, tells the story of single mothers who inhabit the fictional "Have-A-Life"- (A.K.A."Half-A-Life") welfare project in downtown Winnipeg. Single mom's on welfare seems an unlikey basis for humour, but Summer of My Amazing Luck, shortlisted for the Stephen Leacock Humour Prize in 1997, is gut-busting, laugh-out-loud hilarity. Told through the eyes of eighteen-year-old Lucy, who lives at "Half-a-Life" with her baby boy "Dillinger", we meet the Lucy's older, more worldly confident, the eccentric Lish, who's raising three young daughters, and is in deparate search for her one true love, a fire-eater from Colorado, the father of her twins. On the backdrop of Winnipeg's mosquito infested rainy season, Lucy and Lish try to make homes for their children, and find love and contentment in their own lives; we pity, admire and love them for it. Summer of My Amazing Luck is a wonderful book, and a tribute to mothers everywhere.
Interesting. Everything but the kitchen sink included........1999-01-15
Two single mothers living hand-to-mouth grapple with their desires to be loved and accepted and the relentless search for meaning in life. Ranges from humorous to pathetic. Leaves the reader with understanding, pity, and possibly even admiration for the unlikely heroines.
