sunny and surly sauntering.......2004-01-21

Of all Mitchell's works, all uniformly very good and engaging, this one has always had a personal resonance for me. In the spirit of Thoreau himself (Himself?), Mitchell and chums saunter along on their pilgrimage to make sense of place, filled with far-ranging thoughts and comments about their neighbours and civilization in general. Walden Pond continues to draw us in, both for it beauty and historical importance to environmental thought. This book also draws us in as participants on that internal and external journey. For these reasons, the publisher Green Frigate Books recently solicited a front-end blurb from Mitchell for my recently published "Profitably Soaked: Thoreau's Engagment with Water."

A thoroughly irritating book.......2002-12-13

Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of Mitchell, and I really enjoyed CERMONIAL TIME. This lead me to look forward to the arrival of WALKING... and at one level I was not disappointed. AS in all his work Mitchell is adept at weaving together diverse strands of history, culture, and place and to get us thinking about the landscape in new ways. His taste in friends (or at least his way of introducing us to his friends) however seems somewhat flawed. While his other books are more solitary ruminations on ideas and areas, in WALKING he brings along two annoying Yuppies, who would serve as comic relief if any was needed. One is an incredibly PC Indian Wannabe, the other is the sort of Birder that gets some of us reaching for the shotgun, between them they serve only to distract the reader from what would otherwise be a pleasant cross-country ramble through a landscape made all the more interesting by Mitchell's knowledge of both recent history and geological "deep time". Overall Mitchell is at his best when he talks about the dead or the non-human, he can be downright cruel in his descriptions of the living people that he encounters as he approaches Concord. For all that I can sympathize with Mitchell's obvious concern for the rampant development that he must deal with I am not sure that this sort of meaness towards folks who may well be Fellow Travellers (in several senses of the word) does the story much good. In spite of my criticism this is probably a stroll worth taking though you may want to stuff two of your companions into a cedar swamp!

Mitchell's Multi-layered Cultural History.......2002-03-10

These 300 pages describe both a physical journey, lasting but a day, overlaid with historical, architectural, artistic, anthropological, and literary musings of a richly cultivated mind. He writes, for example, upon viewing a stark landscape, "...I made the connection...This hollow...looks very much like the fourteenth-century Tuscan forest as envisioned by nineteenth-century French illustrator Gustave Dore."

Making connections is Mitchell's forte. The narrative of a tramp through woods and sloughs brings to Mitchell's fertile imagination scenes enacted in the places they pass. He seamlessly inter-weaves the fascinating story of King Philip's War, described as "one of the first anti-imperialist efforts ... the first American revolution" alongside the war between the colonists and British regulars, "essentially a civil war."

Rather than re-hash Thoreau's meditations in "Walden," Mitchell shares his own stream-of-consciousness, touching on "The Epic of Gilgamesh" and "The Wizard of Oz," "The Inferno" and some of Melville's "chief harpooners." Additionally, he offers an in-depth account of the way that nineteenth-century landscape painters changed the view of society toward their environment, suggesting that "It is doubtful that the preservation of a wilderness park would even have been considered if the painters hadn't been there first." Indeed, his descriptions are painterly, but he also succeeds in carefully bringing his companions and those they meet on the way to believable life.

The book is divided into 18 chapters, fifteen of them given names of places traversed in each of the miles walked. These names, such as "Nonset Brook" and "Nagog" are less likely to register with the reader than the connections these places evoke in the mind of the author. Who can recall, for instance, that the etymology of "Key West" is to be found in "Mile 10: Thoreau Country?" Hopefully, an index in a later edition will make it easier for the reader to re-discover favorite passages.

Walking towards Walden.......2001-10-21

The readers join Mitchell and his friends as they walk through an historical and artistic region of our nation. We discuss the history, nature, the people and the sights as we meet others along the walk. We walk along with Thoreau as well as Mitchell's fascinating friends. There are few books that I've enjoyed as much as this friendly hike. Mitchell is one of best of the current nature writers because he becomes a participant with the reader in enjoying nature and history.

hypocrisy and/or sly humor?.......1999-08-31

This book operates on at least two and perhaps three levels. The first level is simple: Mr. Mitchell and two friends are walking from Westford to Concord, MA cross-country, trying to avoid roads. His two friends enjoy the out of doors in their own ways and Mr. Mitchell does a lot of daydreaming about the meaning of place in colonial New England and elsewhere.

The second level includes a lot of snotty social commentary at the expense of various parties ostensibly less enlightened than our three sojourners. Barkley is a cynical intellectual who figures that Western civilization is going to hell in a handbasket and he would just like to make it clear that a) it is not his fault and b) he knows exactly how and why it is all happening. Kata is one of those middle class white people who has decided that the Native Americans (and aboriginals everywhere) are a more noble form of human being and so she has decided to remake herself in her Romanticized image of them. Mr Mitchell makes his share of condescending and paranoid comments about the various vernacular landscapes and people that they encounter. His overwrought and absurd fear of three people out target-shooting in a sandpit is particularly ridiculous.

However, there is a third quasi-level to the book that includes Mr. Mitchell's recurring observations of the hypocrisy or at any rate silliness that is inherent in the outlooks of his two friends and, to a lesser extent, his own prejudices. His friend Barkley prides himself on his asceticism, but Mr. Mitchell describes in some detail the lavish gourmet lunch that Barkley brings (eggs mimosa!) and the high tech outdoor clothes that he wears. Kata's perspective is sent up by a hilarious story of the visit of a band of Cree to Concord. A New Age do-gooder invites them to a ceremony only to have them refuse to stay at her house because she doesn't have a TV and they want to see a hockey game and then show up two hours late for the ceremony and have nothing to say except the Lord's prayer. It is this sly knowingness that redeems the book, which would otherwise be annoyingly arch.

Best laid plans.......2007-02-14

I bought this book prior to a vacation in the Loire Valley, and relied heavily upon it to plan what we'd like to see. It didn't let us down. The photographs inspired enthusiasm, the text provided useful info and tips, and the driving routes were indispensable. I'm sorry to see that this great guide is out of print, but happy that it's still available through other sources. Well worth the price, especially now that it's such a bargain.

Cautionary Tale of Drinking.......2007-06-05

Izzy has always been part of the in crowd. She is pretty and relatively popular, decent in school and athletic enough to play tennis and be on the high school cheerleading squad. She is popular enough to be the first of her friends to be invited to a party by a senior. She is excited even though she doesn't particularly like this guy, Marco. Being asked out by him will be good for her social standing, as will being seen at a party with all upperclassmen.

At the party Izzy has a pretty god time mingling with other students. When it is time to go, though, she sees that Marco has been drinking. She thinks maybe she should call her parents or accept an offer from someone else who wants to drive her home. But she doesn't want to seem like a lot of trouble, so she lets Marco take her. Before she knows it, she is in the hospital after a serious car accident, and she's lost one of her legs.

No one seems to be able to act normally around Izzy. Her family tries too hard to make things okay, and her best friends are too freaked out even to visit her much at the hospital. They have dropped out of her life now that she isn't the pretty and popular girl she once was. Only an acquaintance, Rosamunde, has any sense at all. She doesn't try to ignore the fact that Izzy has a tough time ahead of her or that she is no longer who she once was. And through her friendship, Izzy begins to think that things might be okay after all.

I liked some of the characters in this story. They had realistic personalities, from Rosamunde's lack of tact to Joel and Jack's joking, to Francie's obnoxiousness. Izzy was very shallow, though, and she was weak to have accepted a ride with Marco. Her weakness was never really dealt with. This book also read like a cliche cautionary tale, the sort of thing a parent would tell a teen when trying to convince them not to drink and drive. Parts of it were like a lecture.

LOVE IT!.......2007-02-02

I just reread this book. It is one of my most favorite books of all time. Highly recommended to any teenager who thinks they are invincable.

Izzy, Willy-Nilly is a good book.......2006-12-13

I read a book called Izzy, Willy-Nilly by Cynthia Voigt. This book is a realistic fiction book. Izzy, Willy-Nilly is a very realistic book that could happen to anyone. This book shows how a 15 year old girl copes with with the worst thing that could happen. I recommend this for girls from 13 to 18 years of age. It all starts when Izzy is in a car wreck because her date was drunk. She severely hurts her leg to the point it has to be amputated. She struggles through therapy, friendships, school, and cheerleading. Throughout this book it shows how she copes with her life.

I think this book was very good. I love how Cyntia showed Izzy's emotions. It's basically based on a girls life as she grows up and moves on. It's a book that is one of my favorites.

I liked the beginning of this book because it showed how she got in the accident and it was exciting but in the middle, it got a little boring with her in the hospital. At the end, it was exciting again. I liked the book a lot!

At my school I was assigned to read this book. It was actually a very good book. I am an obcessive reader and I think this was the 8th best book I've ever read! This book will always keep you on the edge of your seat seeing what Rosamunde and Izzy will do next.

In the novel Izzy, Willy-Nilly by Cynthia Voigt, Isobel Lingard, "Izzy", is a teenager that has to pay penalty for the choice she makes. Izzy was a cheerleader and very popular at her school. Everyone thought her life was perfect until she got into a big car accident by a drunk driver. Izzy goes through many situations including amputating her leg because of the accident. As she goes through this, she realizes who her friends are and becomes great friends with a girl named Rosamunde. Rosamunde helps her through the accident by telling Izzy to accept herself and try not to be pitied. The author of the book, Cynthia Voigt, sends out the message of how drinking and driving can damage lives forever and how true friends will always be there for you no matter how big your circumstances is.
This novel is good and meaningful towards the teenage audience. It carries the message of the dangers of drinking and driving as well as how our decisions have a big part of her lives. Voigt's writing is meaningful, insightful, and broad. Izzy, Willy-Nilly is also a good, challenging book that is directed mainly at high school students. It deals with many issues teenagers go through today, including drinking, relationships, and indifference. This book really gives aspiration to anyone who has ever felt insufficient or lost, not just those that are handicapped. I recommend this book highly!

When I first picked up the book, I was like "They want us to read this? Man...what a book to read for the summer." But after i started acturally reading it, it really wasn't that bad. I could really relate to it because it starts off with a girl like me...shes a cheerleader and she has tons of friends. But then she gets in a car crash and her life totally changes...my life hasn't changed like hers did but it really makes you think...it's a pretty good book I would definately recommend it!!

good book, bad ending.......1997-01-25

I was asigned at school to read the book "Izzy Willy-Nilly". I was surpised to find out that the gripping story of a teenager who made a bad disision, actualy was a very good book. Izzy was 15 and got in a car with a drunk driver. Ultimatly, she looses her leg in the crash. Marco, (the driver and Izzy's date) barley had a bruise. Izzy goes from a popular cheerleader, to a pittied amputie who wants to die. The book is very descriptive and you immediatly fell in love with the characters during the story. Yet such a book as this has to have its down fall, right? Right! The end unfortunatly left nothing explained, like why a misterious girl from school becomes her best friend, or what happed to any of Izzy's friends. Its a good read, and i definatly recomed it. i made a bad dision once and this really helped me think. It gets depressing but it's honestly interesting

I used this book for my Intro to Foensic Anbthropology class and continued to use it in Grad School. It is the only book I can find that has age determination from sternal rib ends.(not even "Standards" has it). HIGHLY recommend!

I am physician-lawyer from the Philippines. I practice in the field of Clinical Forensic Medicine with special interest in Forensic Anthropology. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in forensics-be they lawyers, physicians, judges and law enforcement officers. This book is "the" book if you want to get started in forensic anthropology and forensic osteology.It provides an introduction to osteology and how it is used to determine age, sex and race. The book outlines the basics of laboratory analysis of skeletal remains, field methods used in forensic anthropology,documentation, report writing, court testimony, and human rights application of forensic anthropology. Forensic forms used in actual cases are even included.

The book is highly recommended to students of forensic anthropology and a must read for professionals from other subspeciaties of forensics, lawyers and judges who deal with forensic cases.

I am using this text in the anthropology lab with my students of Introduction to Forensic Sciences. As a former student of Dr. Ramey Burns, I am convinced she is an excellent educator who enjoys working with new generations of forensic scientists. Students from First World societies find chapter 15 extremely helpful in our seminar discussions about the importance to learn and to respect local cultures when investigating all sort of crimes. For the next edition of the manual, I would like to recommend the inclusion of scientific advancements in Latin America the author has contributed to develop. For instance, normative standards from populations with Latin American biological affiliation may be used in the identification of skeletal remains here in North America.

Great Resource.......2001-11-07

This book is a wealth of information that emergency responders will be hard pressed to find complied anywhere else. The book cleverly adopts several widely used formats in presenting information unique to chemical and biological agents. These formats, which are familiar to emergency response personnel, allow for easy and rapid access to relevant hazard information. The Class Indexes are formatted to look like an MSDS, and the Agent Indexes are modeled after NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards. Finally, the Alphabetical Index of agents is probably the most complete listing of agents and their synonyms that can be found.

Accurate, but not what you might expect........2001-11-01

I once ordered a book from CBIAC on survivability of materials to CBW Agents. From all descriptions, I believed it to be something that discussed various materials and mechanisms of failure. Unfortunately, it turned out to be nothing more than a list of materials with a rating code.

Handbook is a bit better. However, don't purchase this if you are expecting to read a book on CBW Agents and wanting a better understanding of the topic. Handbook is written sort of like those manuals you find on any truck caring hazardous materials...a list of UN codes, chemical names, and safe distances for spills. Overall, the intent seems to be a presentation of CBW Agents in the same format as typically used for occupational health and safety (TWA's, etc.)

I applaud the author for his thoroughness. He described Nerve Agent GP (actually GP11) of the GV Series with information that is not readily available. As usual, the Novichok agents have been misrepresented as a class of chemicals (it's a technique), with no more detail than what has been previously described.

The first section of the book is an index of all the various nomenclature applied to CBW Agents (military symbols, trivial names, other designations etc.) Following this section is a series of brief excerpts on each agent. Nothing in-depth on these agents, and the toxicology information (if available) is pretty much limited to the No-Effect thresholds used for occupational health. Subsequent sections treat each broad category of agents with information typical in MSDS's - very generic.

What most readers will find difficult about this book is that it is likened to indexes to indexes, and then once you find what you are looking for - it's more generic than most readers would prefer.

A bit disappointing.......2000-04-13

The fact that it was published by CRC Press may have led me to set my expectations a bit high, and I felt let down by this handbook. There were some surprising deficiencies - CAS registry numbers were absent for some of the chemical agents, for instance. I was particularly disappointed by the section on the Novichok agents, which was essentially a repeat of the newspaper comments of Mirzayanov. On the plus side, it covers all the common CW agents, some uncommon CW agents (although the basis for their selection is unclear), some industrial materials and CW agent precursors, and a fair selection of BW agents and toxins for a total of 348 agents. On the minus side, it provides only very limited data on each, stacking them at more than 3/page. The class indexes contain some useful information, but are necessarily very general. The 100 pages of reprints of ERG guidlines are probably not needed. The section on weapon markings is interesting, but limited to US weapons only, and lacks illustrations. The first 110+ pages do contain a potentially useful list of synonyms, although again, the selection criteria are not clear. The glossary is reasonably complete. PPE data is only a single page. The sample collection section is vague about what to do with collected samples. Probably useful (along with FM 3-9) for poison control facilities and the libraries of emergency management agencies, but not laid out (hardbound, difficult to keep open to a page) or complete enough (volatilities,vapor pressures are given for only one temperature, for instance) for field use.

Preparing the CSI for terrorism.......2004-07-11

Until now, the criminalistic response to chemical, biological, or radiological terrorism has largely been ignored. Unfortunately, in this post O.J. world of investigations, anything short of a legally and scientifically firm approach to investigation could result in a terrorist - a mass murderer - avoiding criminal sanctions.

Steven C. Drielak has given criminalists a strong volume of guidance to approaching WMD scenes. Drielak, formerly an environmental investigator for Suffolk County, NY, and now with the EPA, has looked at the subject with the eye of an environmental investigator. Indeed, chemical, biological, and radiological incidents are hazardous materials cases, an oft visited field for the environmental investigator.

Drielak examined various protocols in use by EPA, OSHA, the Chemical Weapons Convention, and the Department of Energy. Recognizing that these protocols, while scientifically sound, are designed for regulatory inspections, he has added in aspects to address criminal evidential safeguards. Where these regulatory protocols use proper scientific sampling techniques, Drielak has added additional steps to provide documentable protections against contamination issues.

Hot Zone Forensics is not a light read. For each of the three potential types of evidence, Drielak addresses protocols for sampling liquids, solids, airborne materials, and off victims. Various techniques are described, to ensure legally defensible, scientifically efficient, and personally safe operations.

Included are a number of appendices. Most valuable to investigators is a list of precursors for chemical warfare agents. Although toxic industrial chemicals are readily available, the killing ability of chemical agents, especially nerve agents, makes their manufacture by technically proficient terrorists a strong potential. The ability to identify precursors and to differentiate chemical agent labs from clandestine drug labs will ensure the investigation begins on the correct track and is safely conducted.

Drielak also includes a glossary. Some terms have different meanings than in other applications. Additionally, terms are used which are not in the daily vocabulary of the criminalist, reflecting their source in regulatory, chemical, or biological fields.

Hot Zone Forensics provides a sound foundation for the criminalist or investigator who wishes to prepare - technically, skill-wise, or in equipment - for response to a WMD episode. Drielak has taken an area which, currently, is sloppily approached at best, and provided a strong framework for successful investigatory response.
