According to United Nations' World Food Program(WFP) 2005 annual report, China has become a food donor country from a donation receiving country. China has increased its food donation over 200% alone in year 2005, and is helping other developing countries to improve their agriculcure production.

"It was not all bad news, however. Last year was
the year in which WFP concluded its assistance
to China, having provided 30 million people with
food aid for the past 26 years. We are now
looking to China, which has lifted some
300 million of its own people out of poverty,
to help provide the expertise that will enable
other countries achieve such stunning progress."

Quite a different outcome from the author's prediction 12 years ago considering that during this period China has probably increased its population by at least 100 million (more people to feed), lifted hundreds of millions more out of poverty (more per capita food consumption) and lost some of its best land to industrialiation.

I don't tend to read too much of this sort of thing, but this short book left me flabbergasted. The signs for a massive problem seem to be getting in place. This book was published in 1995,and probably the data was even somewhat out-of-date at that time.10 years has gone by and the population and fantastic economic development has continued to explode and no signs of any attempts to confront the impending pressures. In all the years that I have read books that attempted to forsee developing conditions and then to predict future events;I can't think of any prediction that was on the mark. That is not to say, that the problems aren't very severe;something will come about, but it will be completely different than the senario predicted.
The book quotes a lot of facts and trends, suggests that it will result in very high prices for food, particularly grain in the future.I doubt it will be that simple, the extreme demand will be there and all the price increases in the world for the limited supply will not produce a solution. The book reminds me of the kind of thing one can expect from government and other bureaucrats;simply a definition of the problem ,but totally devoid of any solutions.
Since it is not a subject I have read much about;I have not seen any data to show what the numbers are now,10 years later.I suspect the trends have continued unabated. One must consider that people are very resilient and can adjust to about any amount of deprivation until some event becomes the straw that breaks the camels back--then LOOK-OUT major calamity will occur;history has shown that to be the case time and time again.
The author quite correctly reminds us that "Socialist ideology makes it easy to dismiss problems"."He also quotes Michael Teitelbaum, a demographer;"For Marx, the fact that people were producers as well as consumers meant that the resource limits emphasized by the classical economists could arise under capitalism, but not under socialism."The folly of that thinking has been proven disasterous in the past, and it is likely to be repeated as long as China embrases socialism.
The authors main point is that as a country develops, its people will want the best lifestyle possible. It is easy for the Chinese to see what is possible,as it is already realized in many countries around the world. The problem is that China does not have the resources, nor are there such resources in the rest of the world--and therein lies the problem.
These numbers tell the story:

Annual Per Capita Consumption in 100 kilos
Country Grain Beef Pork Poultry Mutton Milk Eggs
USA 800 42 28 44 1 271 16
Italy 400 16 20 19 1 182 12
China 300 1 21 3 1 4 7
India 200 - 0.4 0.4 0.2 31 13

Kinda scary,ain't it

1 out of 5 stars another environment scare that did not happen.......2003-11-18

We are 2 years away from his 10 year prediction, and no world food shortage or huge price increase is in sight.

5 out of 5 stars Are food prices going to double or triple in the next decade.......1997-11-06

A disturbing analysis of the effect in the near future of China's population on world food requirements. Eminently readable. My only regret is that the writer did not even hint at possible solutions.

From the supplier: China's economic growth will result in a conflict between growing food consumption and the amount of food that can be provided on a sustainable basis given limited natural resources. China's population is increasing by 14 million people annually, with incomes rising at a record rate. This implies an increasing food consumption. However, the country's food production capacity is expected to shrink because farmland is being converted to other uses.

From the supplier: The question of food source for China is disturbing because the country has 22% of the world's population while having only 7% of the world's land. This is further aggravated by the fact that 70% of the land is not suitable for agriculture. Another problem is the conservation of water to increase yields. This can be alleviated by preventing rainfall from just running off the land through the use of loess soil.

This series is awesome, and part of what got me liking Korean Manhwa so much in the first place. The artwork is good, the plot keeps you wanting more....unfortunately, the Fourth and final volume in this series is M.I.A. So, if you read this, know that its good, but be prepared for some dissapointment in never knowing how it ends. Its still worth the read, though.

                      4 out of 5 stars Beware!.......2004-08-28

I love this title BUT I would not recommend buying it at this point in time! Volume 3 was released over a year ago and there has not been a release since. I have heard that the company the author worked for went out of business; but regardless of whether that is true there is no information about a 4th volume on TP's site and the series definitely did not conclude at volume 3. Just in case I would not recommend buying it until another volume comes out, otherwise prepare to be disappointed when you are left hanging.

4 out of 5 stars An intro in Korean shoujo.......2003-11-20

This was one of my first forays into Korean shoujo manhwa and I have to say that I'm very happy that I was introduced to it via INVU.

I've had a chance to read up to the 3rd volume, and though I am just as big of a fan of cliffhangers as the next person, each of the three volumes literally had me on the edge of my seat. I'm still waiting on word for the release date for v4.

It's common for most shoujo manga have a very soap-opera feel, and INVU is no different. What I enjoyed about this series isn't necessarily the original storyline, but rather, the way that the creator staggered several storylines of each of the characters, giving the readers small glimpses here and there of each of their lives, all the while keeping the continuity intact. From the sheer number of characters to the segues to the "coincidental" situations the characters find themselves in, I wouldn't be surprised if INVU is incarnated as a live-drama sometime in the future. In the world of INVU, everybody knows each other directly or indirectly through a friend, family member or other such degree.

Would I recommend this title? Yes, most definitely. The characters are all very engaging and you cannot help but be drawn in to their stories and their dreams. The art is pretty, and I'm rather impressed with the fashion choices the artist Kim Kang Won creates for the characters. It's not as edgy as Paradise Kiss, but it's still good.

                      5 out of 5 stars Highly Reccommend.......2003-10-15

I first picked up the book because I really was taken by the art on the front cover. Reading the back, I still couldn't decide how much I'd like the story, but the guy at the counter said it was really great and reccommended it so I cast my doubts aside.

I've enjoyed book one of this series very much. To me, it leads up a lot to the next books in the series--setting the stage, introducing the characters, their dreams, some mysteries and a few explanations.

Sey is a fairly normal 16 year old girl with a famous author and not very "motherly" mom who decides to up and move one day, having Sey stay with another family--that turns out to be quite a bizarre household with Hali, the daughter, pretending to be a guy named Terri for the mom's benefit. As the story goes along, you get a feel for Sey's closest friends lives as well as those of the family she's staying with. The more I read the series, the more I adore it. I love Sey's character, their situations, a guy who hangs out with the rougher crowd and has quite a... unique family background. There's romance, funny moments, mysteries, and dreams in this story not to mention very nice artwork. I highly reccommend it.

                        Book Description

The health of a population is most accurately reflected in the rate of growth of its children. This theme, prevalent in this book, underlies the analysis and presentation of what is by far the largest compilation of growth data ever assembled in one source. The first edition, published in 1976, included all known reliable recent results on height, weight, skinfolds, and other body measurements from all parts of the globe. In this edition, numerous subsequent measurements taken between 1976 and 1988 have been included, as well as the results of a large number of new studies made on rate of maturation as evinced by bone age and pubertal development stages. Many sections of the book dwell on disentangling the effects of the environment and heredity on growth, and attempt to answer the question of whether one universal standard suffices for all peoples of the world or whether different populations (such as races or nations) should each have their own optimal growth standards.

Summer Moonshine involves Sir Buckstone Abbott trying to sell what is probably the ugliest home in England, as well as a complicated love quadrangle.

5 out of 5 stars When you need a bit of summer..........2004-04-03

stretch out with this for a little get away. The setting is a rambling late Victorian monstrosity country house somewhere in the English countryside during the 1930's. The characters include the Lord of the manor, his family and staff and the guests that are paying to stay there. In typical Wodehouse fashion there are several plots that begin separately and then entertwine in a marvolously convoluted manner to produce delightfuly absurd situations.

There are no appearances by Jeeves or Wooster in this one but the results are still delightful.

5 out of 5 stars The best Wodehouse.......2003-05-03

I first read this book when I was 18, and like the hero, fell in love with a "not too tall girl with an upturned nose". I must have read this book atleast 200 times. You really do wish you were part of the happenings. I wish I could also howl like a wolf in a restaurant. The mysterious American uncle Sam chewing his gum, Tubby going back to his room with a Union Jack for a towel after he finds that his clothes have vanished while swimming, the house of red glazed brick, the Princess.. This is the book which made me fall in love in an Indian Summer.

                                        4 out of 5 stars A Different Wodehouse Book.......2000-05-05

Someday I'd like to read a real biography of Wodehouse (as opposed to the dreadful "fan" bios out there) and find out what was happening to him around 1936 -- when he wrote the scathing, angry "Laughing Gas" and this one. "Summer Moonshine" uses Wodehouse plot A: boy-chases-girl-at-country-house. Yet strange feelings of hopelessness and despair creep into it, and when boy loses girl there's a bitterness like in no other Wodehouse novel. It's not bad, but you definitely get the sense that, as the author himself might put it, something's up.

5 out of 5 stars Probably the best book Wodehouse ever wrote.......1998-06-19

The first thing that has to be mentioned about Summer Moonshine is the hero - Joe Vanringham. I think he is the best hero that Wodehouse ever created - tough; street-smart; not at all the usual 'silly ass' and yet not overly romantic or anything like that. (In fact, if you read Bachelors Anonymous you'll realise that Wodehouse's Joes generally tend to be very good!) The plot is extremely complicated as Wodehousian plots tend to be, but even more so than usual. One finds oneself flipping back to check up on what happened where. And then, on finally figuring it out, laughing like a lunatic. It's a charming book, as economical with space and as funny as one has come to expect Wodehouse to be. Sir Buckstone Abbot is one of the best characters Wodehouse has ever come up with - ditto to Sam Bulpitt, and one wonders why they couldn't become recurring characters. But Joe is the best ever! All hail Joe Vanringham! (Forgive my babbling; this is my favorite book ever, as it's not that difficult to figure out.)
