    Book Description

Wild animals have fascinated human observers since time immemorial. The story of our interest in collecting, classifying and dominating Nature looms large; thus it is surprising that the history of menageries, zoological gardens and zoos as we know them today has been so poorly documented. This gap is addressed by Zoo.

In the Renaissance, wealthy aristocrats showcased exotic beasts in private menageries. Safely caged, animals inspired the interest of naturalists and fed the curiosity of the masses. By the 19th century, increased urbanization and colonization aided the expansion of zoos in which animals were tamed to serve as domesticated livestock. Nowadays, with many natural habitats under threat of extinction, the social function of zoos is less clear. Such institutions both present the illusion of wild animals in a natural state to a nostalgic public and find themselves justifying their existence as saviors of endangered species.

I can't believe I paid $5 for this article. What a waste of money. I thought that for five dollars I'd be downloading some pretty interesting material with some insightful ideas. Instead, it's a frikking book review telling me how good a particular encyclopedia volume is. Seriously... they should not be allowed to falsely sell you a book review in the guise of a scientific article.

              Ugly Girl

All right, Ugly Girl made a mistake. I'd told my mom what I'd heard in the cafeteria, and she'd told Dad. Evidently. I'd thought for sure they would want me to speak up for the truth.

"A seasoned pro from the world of adult literature turns her keen observer's eye to young-adult realism, with notable success. Honest and penetrating" (Kirkus Reviews). Matt Donaghy has always been a BIG MOUTH. But it's never gotten him in trouble -- until one day when two detectives escort him out of class for questioning. Matt has been accused of threatening to blow up Rocky River High School. Ursula Riggs has always been an UGLY GIRL. A loner with fierce, staring eyes, Ursula has no time for petty high school stuff like friends and dating -- or at least that's what she tells herself. Ursula is content with minding her own business. And she doesn't even really know Matt Donaghy. But Ursula is the only person who knows what Matt really said that day ¿ and she is the only one who can help him. In her first novel for young adults, acclaimed author Joyce Carol Oates has created a provocative and unflinching story of friendship and family, and of loyalty and betrayal. "A thought-provoking, character-driven drama" (Booklist, starred review). "A fast-moving, timely, compelling story" (School Library Journal, starred review).

              5 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2007-04-22

This was my first Oates book so I had no idea what to expect. What I got was a book with very well written characters and a good premise. Both main characters are completely believable and their friendship is described i a very good way. The parts focusing on "Ugly girl" are written in first person and Oates really manages to get the right voice for a teenage girl. Or at least it felt authentic to me, but I'm admittedly not a teenage girl.

The book also has its satirical moments and overall a good understanding of human nature. "Big Mouth and Ugly Girl" is a great read for kids and adults alike.

Big Mouth and Ugly Girl is a book about a boy who is allegedly accused of stating that he is going to blow up the school. A girl named Ursula comes to his rescue when she testifies on the behalf that he didn't do it. This boy, Matt, and Ursula develop a special relationship that has its ups and downs throughout this book.
My favorite part of this book is when Ursula and Matt go to a kid's house to see if he took Matt's dog. I think this is a funny part. It shows a whole different side of the characters. I also liked it because the kid that they were "persecuting" had such a smart attitude towards them that it made it funny.
I would recommend this book to a few people. I would recommend it to people who are interested in teen life and drama and maybe people who like relationship stories. Other than that I wouldn't really recommend it. The book was a little slow moving, but once I got to a good part it was hard to put down. Also this book was kind of following the people involved in the plot but not enough about the plot.

This book is about finding out what rumors could lead to. You always have to be careful with what you say, you might endup in a tight squeez like matt donaghy.
What you will find inside this book:
              - respect
              - support
              - rumors
              - truth
              - friendship
              - depression
              - and a change of heart in the characters.
Have fun reading this book :D

2 out of 5 stars Review- Big Mouth and Ugly Girl.......2006-12-20

The book Big mouth and ugly girl" is written by Joyce Carol Oates. It is about a boy (Big Mouth) and a girl (Ugly girl), who go to Rocky River High School. One day, there was a bombthreat and Matt was suddenly involved, only Ursula helps him...

The story beginns with a big mistake. Matt is accused to make a bomb threat in the school cafeteria, but it was only a joke from him. Matt is a big mouth and he has many friends, but then the ting with the bomb thrat happen and he is involved by the others. He is suspended from school and his parents aren't proud of him anymore.
In the time, when he stays at home, he writes e-mails with Ursula. She has a spitted personality, on the one hand she is ugly girl and on the other hand she is Ursula. She has not many friends, but she stands behind Matt.
Matt is very angry about all the people, who believes the rumors , that he would blow up the school. So he sue the school. Therefore he become many problems, actually his dog was kipnepped.
At the end Ursula finds out, who really made the bomb threat. She also rescues Matt, who wnts to comitt suicide. They become very good friends and they are also not involved anymore, because all know currently the truth.
Big mouth and ugly girl have a big developement in their charakter...

I think, that it is a mean book. On the one side, it is interesting to read what happened to the main chrakters, who are very special. On the other side it's often boring, because it happens nothing exciting..
But I think it's a good book for teenagers. Also for reading in school. Sometimes there are many new vocabularys, but you can understand it.

                            Book Description

The application of mathematical models to molecules has now reached maturity. Scientists as diverse as astrophysicists, biologists, chemists, materials scientists and zoologists can reach for their PC, Mac or laptop to model molecular phenomena of unbelievable complexity.
Following the highly successful first edition of Modelling Molecular Structures, this newly updated edition is your guide through the myriad of applications for molecular modelling. This easy-to-read, highly illustrated text covers all areas of molecular modelling, including molecular dynamics, quantum mechanics, and the Hartree-Fock self-consistent field model, providing background information and critically discussing the latest techniques in the field.
Covering developments in the field since the first publication, this title also includes updated text and new material on:
                            * Molecular Dynamics
                            * Dealing with the Solvent
This title is an indispensable introduction for all chemists, materials scientists, molecular biologists, and researchers working in, and interested in, the field of molecular modelling.

                                    Book Description

Western civilization is in many ways an outgrowth of the Roman Empire. The Classical Roman Reader, which contains a collection of some of the finest and most important writing of the Roman period, brings the modern reader into direct contact with the literature, political thought, science, art and architecture, and psychology of classical Rome. Here are the wonders of the Roman world presented in a modern, accessible manner. Each selection is preceded by an introduction that identifies the author and provides information that allows modern readers to consider these texts in a new light. What we discover might be surprising. For instance, in Cicero's orations and Marcus Aurelius' meditations, we hear echoes of today's political forums and popular-psychology talk-show hosts. Virgil's ironic dramatization of the founding myth in the Aeneid prepared the way for America's deeply embedded ambivalence toward the presidency. The Roman preference for practicality over philosophy, leading to a network of superhighways that joined Europe, Asia, Asia Minor, and Africa, literally paved the way for the "global village" of the contemporary world. From Plautus' wildly comic plays to Cato's instructions on farming, and from Catullus' erotic poems to Petronius' descriptions of the decadent splendor of the declining empire, The Classical Roman Reader provides access to the literary, artistic, social, religious, political, scientific, and philosophical texts that shaped Roman thinking and helped form the backbone of Western culture.
