Most tours of Italy take in a Renaissance church or 10, visit piazzas and Michelangelo statues, then add lots of espresso, pasta and wine for a lovely, standard Italian holiday. But Italy has other, less well-known treasures. The countryside is stunningly gorgeous, with scads of glorious mountains, ancient forests, more than 1500 lakes, miles of sandy coastline and some of the best hiking in the world. And Jepson does a remarkable job of providing all the practical information you need to partake and enjoy.

    Book Description

This book presents the contributions to the first Wild@Ace conference. The acronym stands for "Workshop on Industrial and Labor Dynamics — The Agent-Based Computational Aproach", and it has been the first event ever focusing on the very promising use of the agent-based simulation approach for investigation of labor economics and industrial organization issues.

Agent-based models are computer models in which a multitude of agents — each embodied in a specific software code — interact. These agents can represent individuals households, firms, institutions, etc. Moreover, "special" agents can be added to observe and monitor individual and collective behavior. One of the main purpose of writing an ACE model is to gain intuitions on the two-way feedback between the microstructure and the macrostructure of a phenomenon of interest. How is it that simple aggregate regularities may arise from individual disorder? Or that a nice structure at an individual level may lead to a complete absence of regularity in the aggregate? How is it that the complex interaction of very simple individuals may lead to surprisingly complicated aggregate dynamics? Or that sophisticated agents may be unable to organize themselves in any interesting way?

The book includes contributions by some of the most distinguished researchers in the field, such as the economists Alan Kirman, Giovanni Dosi, Leigh Tesfatsion and Mauro Gallegati, and the sociologist Nigel Gilbert.

        Book Description

This book describes the spread of new agricultural practice in the half millennium after 1350, and reconstructs a neglected part of Europe's agricultural past: the introduction of fodder crops, and the continuous reorganization of traditional botanical inputs within a new system of farming. It breaks entirely new ground by showing the distant historical origins of a major transformation in land potential and farm productivity. A vast range of evidence is cited from Italy, France, England and elsewhere to produce in effect an economic, social and cultural history of Europe in which the focus is on the long-distance consequences of the "agricultural revolution".

              Description:
The Casentinesi Forests, in the northern Apennines, harbour a rich community of wild ungulates, with the wolf representing the largest predator in the area. Between 1993 and 2000, wolf pack distribution in the area was monitored and estimates of pack size were obtained by wolf-howling surveys, snow-tracking, and occasional observations. Three to five packs were detected yearly, with sizes averaging 4.2+/-0.9 wolves (maximum 7). The overall density in the area was 4.7 wolves per 100 km^2 with an average distance between adjacent packs of 11.1 km. The high wolf density in the Casentinesi Forests is mostly related to abundance and size of wild prey. In this, like in other areas at low latitudes, wolf density depends mainly on the number of packs, as pack size is rather small and recruitment limited by early dispersal and high mortality. Three homesites used in several years by resident packs were discovered. Homesite fidelity and pack reproductive success were higher in fully protected rather than harvested areas. Establishing a network of protected areas with high ungulate diversity and abundance is proposed as the main factor for allowing a full recovery of the wolf population in Italy.

Do you know Seoul the capital city of South Korea? Korea has suffered many vicissitudes. Everybody knows that. She was destroyed almost to ashes. It was not a far cry to say she had no future indeed. But she came to her feet again, and after that did not ever look back. Korea now is one of the most industrialized countries, with its capital city, Seoul, one of the largest and most crowded megalopolitan cities in the world. But it is wrong to think that Korea lost everything traditional, its legacy and heritage during the time of being colonized, war, and industrialization, because there is still plenty. Korea is a beautiful country. The natural environment is beautiful and so are the people who work hard and make their lives here. The traces of the ancestors who made this land their home such a long time ago have not disappeared; the link remains strong as their descendents continue to live on the same land today using one common language, finding pride and dignity in the continuation of their history and culture. The Beauty of Korea contains the beauty which could be found nowhere but in Korea through the marvelous works of photographer Suh Jae-sik.

Tsukushi realizes that she would have Rui to herself if Shizuka left for France as planned, but she doesn't want to be like the other scheming girls at her school. So she begs Shizuka to stay in Japan for Rui's sake. Domyoji asks Tsukushi for a date at the airport that Shizuka is leaving from, but his sweet words are drowned out by the sound of jets passing by.

                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Oh boy...need an editor for this volume.......2004-02-29

While the series continues to be my favorite, I have to be fair and say that this translated volume was a bit diappointing. Maybe I am nitpicking, but wording is everything in a story. First. at the party, Tsukushi runs into Tsukasa after he brushes of two business associates of his father's. She is quoted as saying "I apologize" for the attack that happened in Vol. 3. She's not the one apologizing in the Japanese volume. It should've been translated as: "apologize" a request, because let's face it...why should she apologize to him for that?
Next error I found in the book: at the airport Rui appears after Shizuka left..then all of a sudden the page that follows is about the date that happens with Tsukushi and Tsukasa...Maybe again, it was just my volume, but the sequence where Tsukushi tells Rui bluntly to go after Shizuka is completely missing. After one page, the story continues on like normal. That was annoying. The last error I found was Sakurako calling Tsukushi Tsukasa! I mean their names are similar, but I think Viz can afford an editor to avoid these errors. I'm really disappointed with this volume and hope that Viz don't mess up Volume 5 which is one of the most important volumes in the series. This is a great series that has a lot of emotional up and downs, but we don't need disappointment added due to poor translations and editing. Come on, Viz. Pull your act together.

5 out of 5 stars Boys over Flowers(Hana Yori Dango): Volume 4.......2004-02-27

One thing I have really noticed while reading Hana Yori Dango(currently on Volume 31), is the progression of the drawings. If you look you can even see a fairly big difference in the quality of drawings between volumes 1 & 4. And the drawings just keep getting better and better, Domiyogi eventually loses his "Marie Antionette" hair, and of course the early 90's styles get the boot too(hehe). So even if those are things that bug you about HYD, stick with it, not only do the drawings get better, but so does the story. :D

In Volume 4 we come back to where we left off in Volume 3, Shizuka announcing her leaving Japan forever AND cutting off her georeous hair at her own birthday party (I suggest NOT reading this paragraph anymore if you DON'T want ANYTHING spoiled. Otherwise, read on. :D). Because Shizuka is leaving Tsukushi is torn between her feelings for Rui, she knows if Shizuka leaves, she have him ALL to herself, but she also really likes Shizuka because she's been nothing but kind. Meanwhile, as Shizuka leaves Domiyogi ask for a date, but Tsukushi can't hear over the airplanes, he the tells her later when and where to meet him, but he's like "Ummmm What is he talking about?". This time Tsukushi feels obligated to meet him, yet she doesn't really want to....

I'd like to tell you more, but it would just ruin it. So I wont.! All I can tell you is, that for the next 20 Volumes or so, you'll be riding the roller coaster of your life.!

If there is one thing I hate about Hana Yori Dango it is this: Once you stop reading, YOU DON'T WANT TO STOP.! And at this rate Viz wont have all the volumes out for 6yrs, so if you can't wait, like me, I suggest finding the Japanese books(you can find them pretty cheap on Sasugabooks.com) and looking up some translations, or finding scanslations(or going on Ebay to get them). Because this series leaves you hanging in pretty much EVERY SINGLE volume. So when I think that Japan had to wait 10yrs for the series to finish, yipes(36 Volumes).!

So really, all-in-all I would rank Boys Over Flowers(Hana Yori Dango), as my absolute fav manga, and quite possibly my favorite romance tale of all times(Ranking up there with Jane Eyre and Pride and Prejudice). Tsukushia and Tsukasa are my favorite couple. Not only that but reading this manga has also made me think a lot, especially in the later volumes. So *enjoy*!

                  God Bless ~Amy

                    Book Description

In Parasitism, Claude Combes explores the fascinating adaptations parasites have developed through their intimate interactions with their hosts. He begins with the biology of parasites—their life cycles, habitats, and different types of associations with their hosts. Next he discusses genetic interactions between hosts and parasites, and he ends with a section on the community ecology of parasites and their role in the evolution of their hosts. Throughout the book Combes enlivens his discussion with a wealth of concrete examples of host-parasite interactions.

The impressionistic journalism of Lafcadio Hearn provides a more vivid first-hand picture of late nineteenth century America than any book I've read. As a classically-educated European and outsider with a penchant for the ghostly, Hearn's work also offers a nice counterpoint to Twain. The more fantastic passages (picturing a cotton press as a monster) Hearn himself later called too florid, but for the post-modern reader, it's a fitting route into old New Orleans. Few journalists of his day embraced places like Hearn. Having known destitution himself, Hearn writes from the bottom. He describes industry, architecture, manners, crime, clothes, furniture and flora while telling his stories. Those familiar with Hearn's later, more mature work in Japan know that he can both capture a society and retell a good ghost story, sometimes intertwining the two. I recommend this book to anyone seeking highly-visual, narrative vignettes of America's past underworlds.

5 out of 5 stars Hearn on New Orleans.......2001-11-07

Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) is generally known for his groundbreaking work on the culture and folklore of Japan.

Less well known, despite the fact that it has been just as influential in its way, is the body of Hearn's Louisiana work. "Inventing New Orleans" -edited by S. Frederick Starr and published by University Press of Mississippi - is an admirable collection of Hearn's writings from the decade he spent in New Orleans prior to leaving the U.S. - first for Martinique and then, ultimately, Japan. From 1878 until 1888 Hearn lived in The Crescent City, and through a series of news articles, editorials, reviews, literary sketches (most published in the New Orleans "Daily City Item" and the New Orleans "Times-Democrat") and two studies of Creole culture, fashioned the romantic idea of New Orleans as a city of mystery, magic and wantonness that has endured to the present day. Nothing short of prolific, Hearn also translated books from the French and penned stories, poems, belles letters and a novel while in New Orleans.

"Inventing New Orleans" includes a small (considering Hearn's output) but thoroughly enjoyable selection of this material. The book is comprised of four sections as follows:

                          I. The Outsider as Insider: Impressions
II. From the Land of Dreams: Sketches
III. Of Vices and Virtues: Editorials
IV. Reports from the Field: Longer Studies

Sections I and II, each very similar in style and subject matter, are my personal favorites. Here, Hearn describes and discourses upon a variety of subjects pertaining to the City Care Forgot in a slice-of-life literary manner. Hearn's first impressions of New Orleans, famous residents of the city (the most well known of which is no doubt Marie Laveau), legends, traditions and myriad topical observations will be found in these pages.

Section III consists of a selection of editorials written for the "Daily City Item" and the "Times-Democrat". It is here that we see Hearn exercising his judgmental pen against political agendas to which he did not subscribe and social ills which he felt to be harming the city. He could not have been popular with the New Orleans police, for instance, judging from the scathing indictments against their alleged corruption to be found in this section.

Section IV includes selections from Hearn's two studies of Creole Culture: "La Cuisine Creole" and "Gombo Zhebes: Little Dictionary of Creole Proverbs. . .". I personally found the former, essentially a cookbook, to be rather dry reading. Those interested in culinary arts will no doubt find much of interest here. The latter is a collection of Creole proverbs, as the title implies, and is a joy to read for those interested in language and a glimpse into the social mind of the lost Creole culture.

All of this is preceded by an erudite introduction (written by the editor) which provides an overview and definition of Southern writing as well as an excellent thumbnail biography of Lafcadio Hearn.

If you are an admirer of Lafcadio Hearn or simply one who has known the haunting charms of The Crescent City, "Inventing New Orleans" will provide you with pages and pages of reading delight.
