Emily, cool it!

Ok, the book may not be up there in the (now) ozone-free stratosphere of Bio/Eco/Ethical bibles, but it is quite good nonetheless.

For those of us who do eat chemical-laden apples and think nothing of buying our carrots from the local supermarket and fly halfway around the world for our holidays, it is a fun read. And reasonably light going. And therein lies its strength; Mr Hickman does not take himself too seriously and he has a sense of humour. This makes him readable and human - I am far from being a tree-hugging eco-warrior (as I'm sure you've guessed) but I found that his explanations were quite reasoned. He admits to failures (he is unwilling to wash his wife's reusable tampons) but he is willing, and gives most things a try.

He admits that his wormery is not a success and that giving up television is not easy and not fun at all. He does do an eco holiday though, and enjoys it.

Good on you, Leo! I like your failures. And I like your humanity.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New.......2005-12-06

Calling this book "A Life Stripped Bare" is an insult to the hundreds of thousands of people who lost literally everything to natural disasters in 2005.

This is a pop media journalist's narration of his own bland foray into "living ethically." There is not a single suggestion in the book that any moderately environmentally-aware person has not heard a dozen times; buy organic, local food; try to get rid of your car; don't eat meat; avoid chemicals. It's somewhat funny at times, but it's really only revelatory if you think food is born in the back of a grocery store and you've never heard of recycling.

A far more useful read is The Consumer's Guide to Effecive Environmental Choices, which is a scientificly-derived explanation of the top environmental choices individuals can make to impact the environment.

      Book Description

Three years after his father's suicide, Jordan is a self–described zombie. With no friends and no interests, Jordan has made sure he is invisible and alone because it's easier to get by that way. But then salvation comes in the most unlikely form. It's gorgeous, and it's sexy–a 1976 Corvette! Drawn by this beautiful car and the doors it opens for him, Jordan realizes that maybe he can start living. But on the path to recovery, Jordan starts taking risky chances that mean he might just lose everything all over again.

In this forceful novel, Michael L. Printz Honor author Terry Trueman powerfully explores the fragile and resilient spirit of a boy desperate for a lifeline to hold on to.

It isn't that our children can not read, but that until an author writes a book that CAN'T BE PUT DOWN, they don't know that they love to read. Terry Trueman is one of the best authors I have to offer these students. Mr.Trueman gives us an opportunity to know what it might be like to have or to love someone who has a disability. His book, Inside Out is incredable. No Right Turn is just another outstanding example. THANK YOU TERRY TRUEMAN.

5 out of 5 stars Why does he write these books?.......2006-07-01

Terry Trueman is a friend of mine. I read No Right Turn in its infancy. Jordan and his angst are real and right on. The twists and turns are all authentic. This book is Terry Trueman. Look at his penchant for fast automobiles and anyone could picture his own '76 Corvette roaring around Spokane, his home town.

Terry was Jordan, a very long time ago. But Terry's fertile mind is in a place where Jordan has developed and Jordan's quandry is now able to find voice, dealing with fears and desires of all young tees.

Terry is a wonderful pervayor of teen angst. He has lived it for quite awhile. Once again, Terry has touched the teen soul, and in doing so, has touched his own. We all know Jordan and root for his deliverance.

Brave novel, brilliant mind, dashed with reality.

5 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2006-05-24

Anyone who knows me knows how much I love Terry Trueman's books, so I won't waste time praising his virtues. Although come to think of it, he might appreciate that. Still, the story of sixteen-year old Jordan, the main character of NO RIGHT TURN, should hopefully be praise enough.

Suicide is never pretty. But when you're a teen, and the last thing your father says to you before he shoots himself is "it's all such bull***t," suicide becomes something bigger than a simple death. It's the thing you think about all the time, and yet never talk about. You wonder, almost constantly, why your father would apologize, then take himself out of your life forever. You wonder which part of life was bull***t--the fact that he was married to your mother?; that he had you as a son?; that his life was boring and predictable with a job and bills and a family to weigh him down?

Several years later, Jordan still doesn't have any answers. All he knows is that his dad is dead, and by his own hand, and that there's no joy in his life. Actually, Jordan doesn't have much of a life at all. All of that changes, though, when his mom starts dating Don Lugar, a guy who owns something that Jordan suddenly can't live without--a 1976 Corvette, a Stingray with a custom paint job, tinted windows, big tires, and a cool canister of nitrous that will really make that baby go.

The first time he goes for a ride in the 'Vette with Don, Jordan realizes that going 110 mph in that car is the first time in a very long while that he can remember feeling alive. The first time, in fact, that he doesn't feel like a walking zombie. So Jordan comes up with the brilliant idea of taking the 'Vette for a drive--by himself--one Wednesday night when Don is out of town. Just one time, one drive by himself, is all he needs to recapture that feeling of being part of the world.

But one time isn't enough, of course, and it doesn't help matters when he meets cheerleader Becka Thorson, one of the most popular girls in school, during one of his clandestine drives. Now the girl of his dreams thinks he's some cool guy with a custom 'Vette, and Jordan's desperate to keep up the image he's created. Once wasn't enough with the car, and he doesn't know what will have to happen to come clean to Becka--and to Don and his mother.

NO RIGHT TURN is another winer from Terry Trueman. Heartfelt, emotional, and full of true-to-life characters, this is a story for anyone who has ever felt like their world has been turned upside down--and for those who don't know how to put it back right-side-up. Definitely a recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars Intense and fast paced.......2006-03-17

When Jordan came home from school one afternoon, he and his dad had a conversation that was puzzling. Why was his dad apologizing? Later, when he heard the gunshot, Jordan knew that his father had killed himself. He still ran down and attempted CPR, but could not save him.

Three years later, Jordan is 16 and still trying to avoid thinking about that terrible day. Everyone but him seems to be moving on. He's become totally numb, with no friends except the somewhat strange Wally, no sports, and no one to talk to. His mother is starting to date again, a neighbor named Don with a really cool Corvette.

The car starts bringing Jordan back to life. First he helps Don with the constant maintenance and polishing it requires, and then they take it to an auto show. The next thing Jordan knows, he's planning to steal the vehicle on the nights when Don isn't home. On his first trip out, he helps Becka, a gorgeous cheerleader who loves "his" car. Author Terry Trueman describes the car and its rides so well that readers will feel like they're right there; even non-gearheads will appreciate this fine automobile.

But soon it becomes easy for Jordan to take it out all the time. He realizes that the thrill he has while speeding around road curves is the first emotion he's experienced in three years. And now the feelings he has for Becka, as they see more of each other, really help him come alive again. He just doesn't know if Becka likes him for himself or for his cool ride.

There is a price for these thrills, and eventually Jordan has to pay it. But getting caught may be just what he needs to help him start recovering from the shock of finding his lifeless father.

NO RIGHT TURN is intense and fast-paced, and just like with Trueman's previous titles, STUCK IN NEUTRAL and CRUISE CONTROL, readers will be left thinking about the main protagonist for a long time.

                          Book Description

The use of lanthanide shift reagents (LSR) in NMR spectroscopy has tremendously increased over the past 15 years. Today textbooks as well as laboratory manuals describe the applications of LSR to chemical structure analysis. For the use of lanthanide shift reagents in stereochemical analysis, however, this book provides the first comprehensive review. It illustrates their application in the determination of the configuration of organic compounds which is a proving ground for the refinement of LSR theory. In five chapters the authors discuss computer-aided approaches to elucidating the geometry of LSR-substrate complexes, show solutions of complex stereochemical problems and present the new and successful reagent class of Ag(I)/Ln(III) diketonate complexes. Stereochemical analyses of diastereotopic groups, ring conformations, bridged polycylic compounds and deuterium labeling are further keywords which prove that this book offers an up-to-date account of an active area of research.

                                            Book Description

4 out of 5 stars Forget Gigi, read The Cat.......2003-08-26

Not to say that Gigi isn't worth reading. It's a classic novel that has got the attention it's deserved. But the second novel The Cat is neglected. I can't blame this when another story is attached to a novel it seems to be a filler but this isn't the case.
The Cat deals with a sensitive young boy. He's lives a quiet life with his mother and has a special relationship with his cat. Actually he has a deep understanding of cats that no one can seem to make sense of. He is thrust into a marriage with a local girl Camille.
Afer marriage he realizes she wasn't the girl he thought. She's more needy and isn't satisifed with the marriage. He begins to think about the cat he left at home. Then a fierce battle between the cat and the wife begins.
An interesting concept and Colette pulls it off well.

                                            5 out of 5 stars C'est Magnifique.......2002-07-03

The story of Gigi is a wonderful piece of work. It discards the old fashioned minds of the era and brings to light the truth. Colette brings her own life experience into this short story. Bringing into the story the way how to catch a man and how many is so important in some people lives and love dies away (but not exactly dies just hidden).

5 out of 5 stars GiGi, but not as in the musical.......2001-05-02

Gigi was really about a time, a place and a way of life that is no more--the Belle Epoque and the demimonde of Paris.

The "demimonde" or twilight or half-world, was the domain of paid courtesans, not prostitutes, but professional "artistes" who made their living as the paid companions of rich men. They often were dancers or actresses and didn't marry--"We never marry in our family" states Gigi's mother. The Belle Epoque ended with World War One and saw the revitalizaton of Paris by Hausmann and others, creating the city's magnificent architecture that we still love today.

Gigi is a young girl of 16. She falls in love with a rich gentlemen of 33, Gaston. But contrary to custom, she wants something quite different that her family has planned for her. This reflects the idealized dream that Colette had of love with a much older man. She herself pursued this dream disastrously by marrying the highly unsuitable Willy, and also assigned her alter-ego Claudine the same but happier dream in her Claudine novels.

Read this for the wonderful evocation of Paris in the gay 90's, and realize that it has little to do with the musical--this is about a way of life that has passed, along with horse drawn carriages, laced hourglass corsets, and women's hats the size of cartwheels.

5 out of 5 stars Your own personal time machine!.......2001-04-06

I love the way Colette writes, her descriptions and words just take me back to that period of time, turn of the century Paris. She gives flavor to the book making us feel what the Parisian culture was like at that time. I totaly love Gigi. I've watched the movie first which is why I bought the book in the first place. I like the book because it describes more of the affair and courtesan stuff which the movie sugars up to give it a G rating. I just wish that Colette could've had Gigi go be Gaston's arm ornament at some party like Gigi did in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars I DO Understand The Parisians.......2001-01-03

The books of Collette all seems to whisk you right into the world of turn of the century Paris (GiGi). For those who think a relationship between a 16 year old and a 33 year old odd, it most certainly is by today's standards, but not for 1900 - try to think that quite a few women were groomed for marriage or to be courtisans as soon as they were old enough back then. Perspective is required when reading historical fiction, and Collette's works are some of the finest.
