"God Has Made Us a Kingdom": James Strang And the Midwest Mormons
ASIN: 0472084542 |
Book Description
A skeptical follower of James Jesse Strang once wrote: "No man can serve two masters. You cannot serve a temporal king and a republican government at the same time. The thing is preposterous." And yet, under Strang, such a system survived in Michigan for six years. This book traces the life and assassination of King Strang, the extraordinary Mormon leader who, in the 1850s, created a literal kingdom on Beaver Island, in Lake Michigan.
As a young man, Strang was a dreamer of grandiose dreams--dreams of power, of royalty, and of fame. For him, the dreams came true. But in his pursuit of those dreams, Strang walked a tightrope to avoid ever-impending doom. Strang's kingdom flourished despite perennial conflicts with non-Mormons, including a gun battle with mainlanders, and despite a major prosecution by the federal government. His kingdom was designed to be totally independent of the state and nation. And yet, he was a shrewd political tactician who took advantage of Michigan law to be twice elected to the state legislature and become what one Detroit newspaper called the most powerful politician in the state.
Here is Strang the man of contrasts and contradictions, the strident opponent of polygamy and the husband of five wives, the astute editor and the incendiary propagandist, the prophet and the scoundrel, the man who through the sheer force of his personality made his followers a group to be feared in his region.
Vast amount of fresh information, including contemporary journals, documents, and letters never before used by biographers help draw a portrait of one of the most complex and resourceful leaders in American history.
Customer Reviews:
Long Live The King!.......2004-01-26
I found this book to be well written and researched. James Jesse Strang is a unique character (A King no less!) in the history of Michigan. This book inspired me to visit Michigan's Beaver Island. As a compliment to this book I would also suggest reading Guardian of the Great Lakes The U.S. Paddle Frigate Michigan By: Mr. Bradley A. Rodgers.
A Solid Biography.......2002-04-01
This work is a fairly standard, straight-forward biography of King Strang. It is very well researched, documented, and foot noted. It would appear that Mr. Van Noord dug deeper into his reseach than most authors dealing with James Strang have in the past. The book enlightened me on several points regarding King Strang that I had previously read and Mr. Van Noord found to be incorrect. If you are interested in learning about a fascinating man and those around him this is the book. However it gives only a sparce and very typical Beaver Island history and does not touch on the legendary (and I believe, mythical) Mormon, Beaver Island treasure at all. If those items are your points of interest, look elsewhere.
Great Biography of an Often Overlooked Figure.......2000-12-28
Mormonism's second prophet wasn't the famous Brigham Young -- he may have seized control of many of the Church's institutions, but he never claimed to be the "Prophet". That mantle was seized by the insteresting historic figure, James J. Strang, who led his portion of the Mormon Church from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Voree, Wisconsin, and then to Beaver Island, Michigan at the same time that Young was leading his branch to Utah.
Van Noord's book is a great biography of Strang which makes close use of Strang's journals, letters, books, and draws a great deal from the newspapers which Strang's church published. Strang's many successes both on Beaver Island and then also in the Michigan legislature, imply that he was quite a brilliant and eloquent character. The book leads you to wonder what might have happened had he not been assassinated.
The only problems with Van Noord's book are that he does not seem to be an expert in the field of Mormon history generally, and he has relied on informants in the modern Utah church -- the great rival of Strang's church -- for some of his information on Mormonism. Additionally, the biography definitely leaves you wanting a larger history of the Strangite church.
All in all, the book is an excellent read. I picked it up and nearly read it cover to cover uninterrupted, as I couldn't wait to find out what happened to Strang next.
Fair and Accurate Narrative.......1999-11-19
I have done extensive study on the subject of Jas. Strang and his followers. I found this book and several others extremely fair-minded considering the controversies (as well as present day prejudices) surrounding this utopian experiment. I welcome other comments. My great-great grandfather was present at Strang's coronation on Beaver Island, Michigan.
Tell me about this man.......1997-12-17
I'm a relative of his and have recently become interested in learning about him. So please if you know about him tell me.
Book Description
By March of 2001, the all-new 4th Edition of Michael R. Kelsey's book, Climber's and Hiker's Guide to the World's Mountains and Volcanos, will be ready for sale (for this editon, the words "and Volcanos" has been added for the first time). This book first came out in 1981, but had only 680 pages and no pictures. This 4th Edition has 1248 pages, 584 mapped areas, 650 B+W fotos.
For this edition, and since 1991, the author spent 2 summers, or about 7 months traveling Russian-speaking areas of Central Asia, Russia, the Kavkazian (Caucasus) Republics, and eastern Europe; also another 4 months in east and southern Africa, including 5 islands east of Africa in the Indian Ocean. He also returned to the Caribbean twice, once going to northern South America, plus 2 full months in Indonesia, 2 months in the central Pacific, a month in the Philippines and another month in Japan, 2 months in northeast Africa and the Arabian countries of Oman & Yemen, 1 1/2 months in Southeast Asia, about 4 months going to the eastern USA, Mexico and Canada & Alaska, and another month in Mexico & Central America. While on these travels he made the decision to go after as many active or "live" volcanos as possible. The reason for this is, everyone enjoys a close look at, and the exilerating experience of a real live, belching, rumbling, snorting, smoking or quaking volcano.
To the author's knowledge, this is the only book around that is a climbing guide to volcanos and/or the volcanos of the world. On maps featuring a volcano, a paragraph on its eruptive history is included, along with how to get there, how long it will take to climb, something about transportation & hotels, where water and campsites are, etc, etc.
The author has now traveled to 223 countries, republics, islands or island groups, and has personally visited, been close to, and/or has climbed a mountain on more than 91% of the total mapped areas in this new 4th Editon.

It's your choice.......2007-01-02
Can true love survive High school, is the story about three young girls Holly, Mads, and Lina; they're best friends. Holly is a hopeless romantic who believes that she's sort of a match maker, Mads (Madison)is in love with a guy who doesn't acknowledge her exsistence, and Lina is so caught up in being in love with her teacher that she doesn't realize the potential boyfriend material in front of her. Together these friends pose the question is love something that can make it through highschool. From experience they find out the answer.
The book can true love survive high school by Natalie Standiford, was an okay book for what it was. Its the type of story most girls in juniorhigh believes is going to play out as her actual life or something similar to it when she gets to high school. One thing I like about how Natalie wrote the book is for each chapter she offered a horoscope for the character she was talking about, which foreshadowed whats going to happen next in the book. I also liked how she made an effort to make each of the characters totally different from each other, with their own (the characters) trials and tribulations. However I felt like I've read this book a million times over so nothing surprised me.Overall only the person reading the book can most best decide how they feel about the book. Must Read!.......2006-09-26
Were your parents high school sweet hearts? Well that's exactly what
Britta and Ed want to be in Can True Love Survive High School? by
Natalie Standiford, the second book in The Dating Game series. In this
teen drama Madison, Holly, and Lina are best friends in high school,
and start a dating website for their school. It begins as a school
project, but everything gets a little out of hand when they attempt to
help a girl out who has never been on a date, who's name is Britta.
Thanks to their website, Britta finds her "true love" who she wants to
elope with after only knowing him for a couple weeks. Besides trying
to stop the out of control engagement, Holly must try to keep her
boyfriend, Rob, and keep up with Lina, who has a fan club for one of
her teachers. "Fan club" is a pretty loose term considering that Lina
is in love with her teacher and thinks that they should be together.
Lina takes her obsession to great lengths when she plans to hide in
his closet at a party, and surprise him after everybody has left. Can
Holly stop Britta from getting married, and will Lina and her teacher
end up together?
Although this book is fiction, it is far from unrealistic. Natalie
Standiford has done an excellent job of depicting high school, and the
many challenges one faces there. Although I did not read the first
book, The Dating Game, I still found this installment and the third,
Ex Ratings, very enticing. One of the many things I like about this
series is that you don't have to start with the first book for it to
make sense. Each book provides enough background information on the
characters so that you can pick up the last book, which I also read,
and it will still be an excellent read, as well as understandable.
This book is full of unsuspected twists and turns that just keep
adding to the excitement. For example, when you think that Britta and
her boyfriend and having a nice, normal relationship, Britta breaks
the news of her plans for marriage to Holly by saying, "He said we
should get married, the day after I met him...He said it was the only
way we could be together. And it is. I'm going to do it. I'm going to
marry him." (p.119) So, if you're a teenage girl looking for a great
page-turner, I would definitely recommend this book to you.
the trouble with love is..........2006-06-16
True loves always prevails, you just have to find it first. That's the hard part for Mads, Lina, and Holly, unfortunately. Mads' mom forces her to try out for a play that she has written, and Mads is more than happy to when she finds out that Sean's girlfriend will be in it, too. Lina is dismayed when she finds out Dan will be moving away, so she and Ramona decide to finally declare their love in a sneaky way that they will regret. Holly is back with Rob, but is sidetracked from him and her friends when she is swept up in playing matchmaker for Britta, expecially when Britta's parents refuse to let her see the guy she loves. Fun, fun, fun!
A humorous and realistic look at high school life.......2005-09-23
The third installment in Natalie Standiford's Dating Game series, CAN TRUE LOVE SURVIVE HIGH SCHOOL?, keeps the story of Holly, Madison and Lina moving and also fleshes out several minor characters from the previous books.
Holly has a new project, which is to find her pal Britta a boyfriend so that Britta realizes there is more to life than just school. Madison is still dating her artist boyfriend, Stephen, while continuing to moon over Sean in a subtle manner. And Lina still has a serious crush on her teacher, Dan.
All three girls seem to mature as the book progresses, which makes them better people and more likable characters. Britta can be a bit annoying at times, but this can be chalked up to her isolated existence; she now is beginning a serious relationship with a foreign boy and contemplating elopement. Holly's older sister invites Holly and her friends to spend a weekend at college with her, giving the girls a sneak peak at what life after high school might be like. Madison's mother has written an autobiographical play that is being produced, and she wants Madison and her younger sister to portray her in it. Madison is not thrilled, to say the least. Lina hopes to start something with Dan at a party, but begins to realize that perhaps he is not the best choice for a teenage girl.
As with the first two installments, Standiford's strengths are her characters and humor. Readers will be able to relate to Holly, Madison and Lina, and the situations in which they find themselves. This series continues to be a humorous and realistic look at life in high school.

Book Description
The words 'natural history' conjour up an immediate vision of the living countryside--wild animals, flowers, birds and butterflies. This popular image of natural history is reflected in the content of this book. It is a dictionary about life on Earth, about the rich diversity of living organisms and their habitats. Mostly, it deals with present day species but it does include many fossil groups as well.

Book Description
Optimization problems abound in most fields of science, engineering, and technology. In many of these problems it is necessary to compute the global optimum (or a good approximation) of a multivariable function. The variables that define the function to be optimized can be continuous and/or discrete and, in addition, they often have to satisfy certain constraints. Global optimization problems belong to the complexity class of NP-hard problems. Such problems are very difficult to solve; traditional descent optimization algorithms based on local information are inadequate for solving them. In most cases of practical interest the number of local optima increases, on the average, exponentially with the size of the problem (number of variables). Furthermore, most of the traditional approaches fail to escape from a local optimum in order to continue the search for the global solution. Global optimization has received a lot of attention in the past ten years, due to the success of new algorithms for solving large classes of problems from diverse areas such as computational chemistry and biology, structural optimization, computer sciences, operations research, economics, and engineering design and control. This book contains refereed, invited papers presented at the conference on `State of the Art in Global Optimization: Computational Methods and Applications' held at Princeton University, April 28-30, 1995. The conference presented current research on global optimization and related applications in science and engineering. The papers included in this book cover a wide spectrum of approaches for solving global optimization problems and applications. Audience: An invaluable source of information to faculty, students and researchers in optimization, engineering, mathematics, computer sciences, and related areas.
Customer Reviews:
Amazingly, redundantly, mind-bogglingly BAD.......2007-07-28
Just as there are some works of plastic and painterly art so atrocious you just have to stand there and marvel at them, so this bestselling warhorse from the 1950s is a gob-smacking stunner. So marvelous it gets 2 stars rather than 1 (Amazon.com doesn't allow you less than one).
From the Time cover story on Cozzens we learn that this book was years in the making, and had been percolating in dribs and drabs since about 1930. This long gestation period may account for the book's lack of pulse and animal spirit--the sort of narrative drive that grabs you by the collar and demands that you turn the page, no matter how bad the characters or subject matter. But what sort of fetus do you end up with after a quarter-century? Trite subject matter, half-baked themes, and half-conceived characters.
And yet the thing was a bestseller. Must've been the title.
Delving into the the substrata of the novel and Cozzens's own biography, I gather that the novel took seed as a diatribe against religion. Narrowing his focus, he naturally took off on Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. Cozzens's driving vision, the thing he wanted to mock and bludgeon, was a picture of churchy old biddies who talked about things like the Trinity and the Holy Ghost...instead of Manly Things, the kind of stuff Harvard freshmen circa 1923 might talk about--you know...Science...and Literary Criticism...and Modern Thinking, you know...and Will There Be Another War?
The author's notion of a churchy biddy is herein caricatured as the uni-dimensional Polly Pratt, a wealthy Catholic lady who appears to have no function whatsoever other than to walk out on stage, stand next to a decaying stone fountain, and spout God-bothering drivel for a few pages, while the author (codenamed Arthur--geddit?) listens and smirks.
The remainder of the novel is just so much cornstarch and bromide: sub-John O'Hara recitations of small-town Pennsylvania scandal among the country-club set.
Overblown, pretentious and overrated.......2002-03-16
There are three subplots in this novel that intertwines around the life of attorney Arthur Winner. Sometimes interesting, this book is a chore to read as Cozzen's style is, well, wordy and ornate.
There is a scene where the central character and his sexually-repressed wife are in the sack ("Her." "Him", "Her", "Him." )...the instructions on how to program my VCR were more stimulating. Give me a break.
Maybe by today's overly PC standards this book could be considered mildly racist and bigoted, but I fail to see where. Catholics do take it on the chin, however.
This was almost a good novel. John Cheever does this type of thing much better.
a carefully written novel for perceptive readers.......2001-08-10
This book combines a number of uncommon qualities that will reward the patient reader: it is beautifully plotted, with no loose ends or errors in continuity; it is based on meticulous (but not flaunted) research into the subjects depicted; and it realistically portrays aspects of modern life that rarely draw the attention of serious novelists. Here, as in his other major works, Cozzens focuses on people's jobs -- how we make it through the day, dealing with the unattractive challenges life throws at us. Admittedly, his outlook on many topics is old-fashioned (something he acknowledged), but he generally appears to be someone honestly trying to look at the world as objectively as he can. (If one reads his major works in chronological order, it becomes clear how this striving for objectivity enabled him to grow beyond many of the prejudices of his class.) A priceless view of one aspect of modern American life.
A master craftsman and conservative novelist.......2000-05-12
First of all, Cozzens remains an impressive manager of his material. Multiple plots and personalities weave tightly through the work, and just when you think that the novel is nothing but a big pile of disconnected pieces, Cozzens turns just a couple of corners and the whole things snaps into place in a stunning moment of revelation. It's masterful craft, and both emotionally and intellectually moving.
On top of that, Cozzens manages to write for grownups in a world where compromise, settling, and just muddling through are sometimes as heroic as it gets-- sacrifices must be made, and it's NOT always a bad thing. If you find Steinbeck a tad too mushy, Hemmingway too mannered and ballsy, and Fitzgerald too melodramatic, this underappreciated author may be for you, and this novel is a great place to start.
An excellent book about humans under the stresses of life.......1999-03-27
James Gould Cozzens is an outstanding author who writes fairly-long, serious books which address important issues regarding the myriad stresses of human life. By Love Possessed is an interesting story which deals with matters of responsibility and conscience. If you are not put off by this sort of thing you will probably find this book both rewarding and enjoyable.

Dark Visions.......2007-02-20
I have read this book so many time and it still doesn't get old.
Great!.......2007-01-09
I have always been an avid fan of LJ Smith, so I was not surprised that this series was awesome. Her descriptions are always so clear (and so strange) that you can almost envision the people and things in front of you (unlike everyone else though I loved Rob more than Gabriel). As an adult now, I still read her books (although I have yet to find the last book of the Nightworld Series). A great read for anyone!!!!!!!
I didn't know God himself wrote books!.......2004-07-10
This book is by FAR my favorite book of all time. Kaitlyn Fairchild is my new favorite female character. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings... Yeah, they don't hold a candle to L.J. Smith's Dark Visions Collector's Edition.
Personally, I am AMAZED that this book doesn't get more recognition than it currently does. I would enjoy it more than life itself if this book became a movie. I'm actually telling all my friends about it.
I am not much of a reader... at all... But this book... This book made me cry, made me laugh, made me think hard on certain subjects... everything. I loaned my copy to a friend in hopes of getting her hooked on it too.
I have read and re-read this book, time and time again, for years. It never gets old. Smith's vivid descriptions of surroundings and characteristics give me a good mental image of all her characters.
I am seriously thinking about getting her other books. In fact, I will.
Read this book. If you think you knew what a good book is... you haven't read anything until you read this.
Good but not great.......2004-01-07
Whilst LJ Smith's books are a good read, I do get narked with the characters sometimes. Most of the lead characters are too nice and any 'bad' characters are always gothy and into heavy metal. Goodie is sickly sweet and oh so nice blonde, baddie is hot but very nasty brunette (see how easy it is to follow the plot read the secret circle if you don't believe me) But back to this, this had a great starting point, but lost the plot slighty. LJS seemed to be really hitting us on the head with how 'bad' Gabriel was and how nice everyone else was, and of course the main female is so understanding and desired by all. Liked it but not as much as the Forbidden Game.
Dark Visions: The Strange Power, the Possessed, the Passion.......2003-12-11
I had read several of L.J.Smith's Nightworld series when I read Dark Visions, and I was immediately spellbound. The characters were all well-developed and very appealing - you cared what happened to them. Of course, Gabriel was my favorite. There's something so appealing about a bad boy in need of salvation. I read the whole thing through in one sitting and then sat down and read it through again. I would recommend it for anyone interested in the unknown, in coming-of-age books, or just interested in a good read.

The Hesitant Psychic is so wonderfully different that I found it very difficult to put down. I thought I had read every kind of paranormal story, but these are so incredibly new and well written that I laughed, I cried, and I shuddered, as the author took me on a marvelous roller coaster ride through the repository of my emotions.
The stories in The Hesitant Psychic make me want to think deeper about my life and the lives of those close to me. The stories are fresh and unique and stir up all of my emotions. The paranormal slant is positively original. Yulish has done it again with his second unique book!

Customer Reviews:
A good time travel romance..........2003-06-20
Through a quirk of fate, Liz Hayden was cast back through time as a woman that was said to be murdered by her husband. When Liz realizes where she is, she has the advantage of knowing what the history books say happen to Elizabeth Rowland. What she doesn't count on is her attraction to the accused, but aquitted murderer, Garrett Rowland, then man who thinks she is his wife. The more time Liz spends with Garrett, the more she realizes that he is far from a murderer. Soon she finds herself in more danger than she ever counted on, from the person she least expected.
Garrett knew that something was different about Elizabeth. What he doesn't realize is what. Why does she seem so different from the woman that he married? And why is he suddenly so attracted to her? All Garrett knows is where he once would have been happy to be rid of her, now he can not let Elizabeth go.
This is a sweet time travel romance about two people who are soulmates. I didn't really like how the story ended, but above all, it was a good read.
