The "plants of....." series is the best most comprehensive botanical reference materials for the Northwest and southern BC as well as the interior, I highly reccomend these books to anyone who has interest in the indigenous species of these areas. As a proffessional Forester I have foujnd myself constantly referring to these books to identify, shrubs, herbs and trees, as well as mosses and lichens. And if your memory is as bad as mine this book will become a mainstay and welcome addition to your reference collection.

Northwest Plant Identification Guide.......1999-12-20

This is the best guide to native (and nonnative) plants growing in the Pacific Northwest that I have found. Photographs are excellent and are accompanied by detailed descriptions of leaves, flowers and fruits and a location map showing the range of each plant. The book is over 500 pages with two plants described on each page. It is very comprehensive.

The Review
Irish writer Colin Bateman presents an exhilarative, spine tingling work filled with all the zestful agitation, whimsical cast of characters and explosive tension necessary to hold the target audience absorbed from beginning paragraph to ending lines. Eddie & the Gang with No Name: Running with the Reservoir Pups is a well-written publication filled with generously drawn players and a cleverly interwoven, precarious story line. The setting for the book is England, and some of the language used will have an English flavor which kids will find intriguing.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

Book Description

This book focuses on a prototype of creative causal processes termed BIOS and how the concept can be applied to the physical world, in medicine and in social science. This book presents methods for identifying creative features in empirical data; studies showing biotic patterns in physical, biological, and economic processes; mathematical models of bipolar (positive and negative) feedback that generate biotic patterns. These studies support the hypothesis that natural processes are creative (not determined) and causal (not random) and that bipolar feedback plays a major role in their evolution. Simple processes precede, coexist, constitute and surround the complex systems they generate (priority of the simple). In turn, complex processes feedback and transform simpler ones (supremacy of the complex).

Bios--A theory of nature that challenges our preconceptions.......2006-09-28

I found that the book has introduced some totally new and significant ideas about science and logic that have ramifications about the basis of all theories of the natural world. Like most totally new and creative ideas, it is not immediately obvious that the ideas presented have such ramifications, notwithstanding the rather clear claim of the author. It is worth remembering that such ideas as fractals, and chaos were equally unclear to the general readership, though those that first observed the phenomena had a clear idea of what was new, and articulated those ideas well. I found it useful in approaching this book to start with the conclusion, since there the author's general plan is laid out. I found it then useful to consider the author's example of the heart, and how the ideas of bios are exemplified. For this example, the various ways of looking at the data, such as recursion plots, are as new and useful as the ways of measuring the shoreline was to fractals. One sees that bios occurs in natural processes, and gets a feel for how to look for such effects elsewhere. The book contains a great deal of the author's thoughts about other places to look for bios, other places where bios can be seen, and more importantly, shares his philosophical views about how theories of nature should be constructed. He allows the reader to see that the essence of these ideas extend back in time to the teachings of Heraclitus and Lao-Tze, to name just two early philosophers.

In short, I strongly recommend that every serious student of nature and philosophy have a copy of Bios on their desk.

A foundation for a living science.......2006-09-10

I found Bios to be successful in its ambitious project to establish a
new mathematics and new science of creative processes. The mathematic
analysis of Bios has powerful applications in my professional life as
a computer programmer and a designer of computer models for education.
I believe it is a significant break-thru in the understanding of
complex, creative phenomena.

The books application of biotic analysis to other fields of science is
an excellent example of the critical power of re-examining the
foundation of our understanding of creative processes. The tremendous
scope of knowledge that is brought to bear in presenting a historic
analysis of these scientific fields is impressive. It illustrates how
these fields of knowledge are themselves creative processes that can
be understood thru the Bios hypothesis.

On a personal level, Bios has given not only a voice, but a toolbox,
to the critical concerns I have with my professional work, and my own
scientific studies. I previously had difficulty describing to my
colleagues my misgivings about the application of game-theory, chaos
studies, equilibrium dynamics, and other staples of computer modeling
of complex phenomena -- especially in the context of science education
for children. Bios gave me a framework to explain my misgivings, as
well as a alternative hypothesis to approach the work with.

A genius.......2005-10-30

Machado de Assis is a genius. Born from a very poor family, he learned languages during the Brazilian imperial period where lower classes were very limited to access education. He started with very typical romantic novels although with his own style. He married a well educated portuguese woman who introduced him more selected european literature. After 40 years old Machado wrote what we classified as classics. Machado's style was not a realistic naturalism writer. Machado is Machado. He created his own style helping literature to go ahead of his time. A genius.

A poignant satire of 19th century Brazil.......2001-02-09

"Quincas Borba" is one of a series of fine novels by Brazilian author Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis. The author, who died in 1908, is one of the major figures of 19th century South American literature. "Quincas Borba" is a sort of companion volume to another of the author's novels, "The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas." While "Quincas Borba" does not, in my opinion, attain the level of literary inventiveness of its companion novel, it is still a fascinating, and ultimately moving, piece of fiction. It has been translated into a smooth English by Gregory Rabassa.

"Quincas Borba" tells the story of Rubiao, who inherits a fortune, as well as a pet dog, from the eccentric philosopher Quincas Borba. Curiously, the dog is also named Quincas Borba. The novel follows Rubiao as he attempts to find love and fulfillment in 19th century Brazil.

The novel contains many ironic comments on the craft of writing itself, and examines the political, sexual, and economic complexities of Rubiao's world. The author's writing is peppered with intriguing cultural allusions: Poe, Shakespeare's "Othello," Homer, Mozart, Kant, Dante's "Inferno," and more.

"Quincas Borba" is an effective mix of comedy and tragedy. Machado de Assis writes with both insight into and compassion for the human condition. Those interested in 19th century literature, Latin American studies, or the development of the novel should definitely read this book.

A masterpiece of world literature!.......2000-02-17

This is one of the best books I've ever read! The story of the ascencion and fall of a man, his sanity and madness, make us think about our human condition. Machado de Assis is undobted the best Brazilian writer.

But Rubião goes insane, looses his fortune and lives all alone, except for the dog Quincas Borba, as a beggar in his native city. Rubião finally dies, followed three days later by the dog. Both deaths are ignored.
