Great Travel Guide.......2007-01-01

I just came back from my first trip to Memphis and Nashville. I have to say that this book was my life source. We only had a limited amount of time to see everything on our wish list, and this book made it possible to plan the best sites, the best restaurants, where to stay, shop and everything. All of the information it gave was useful and was essential to our amazing trip. They even include fun and comprehensive walking tours. I would recommend this book to anyone going to Nash and Memphis.

Frommer's Nashville & Memphis is a comprehensive yet easy to read travel book. I especially liked the list of "must-do" items if you only have a few days to tour, which was the case with me. It's broken down in an organized fashion with sections on restaurants, nightlife, attractions, etc. The maps in each section were particularly helpful.

Although Memphis should have it's own book. This is a decent overview of both cities. If you are just planning to visit Memphis like I was, try Nicky Robertshaw's Memphis book. It is much more in depth

Frommer's Nashville and Memphis.......2005-09-14

This was not a very good guidebook. The directions were not always accurate and the maps (a very important part of a guide book) were not very good. The book is poorly organized, so that you are constantly having to page through to find information.

When i first purchased the book "The Rise and Fall of a 10th Grade Social Climber" i got it because of the cover. At first i thought the book was slow and boring until i got to the middle of it. Mim's desire to become one of the popular girls at the Baldwin school drives her to do many crazy things. She gets a fake id, tries pot and cigarets, goes to trump tower and her friendship with her childhood best friend is tested. She also keeps a diary to write about the popular girls in. She learns that writing about your friends is never a good thing. This book tought me to always be honest and true to your friends because in the end, your true friends will stick by your side.

I graduated from highschool quite a while ago, but this book was a very, very fun read. Mimi has that perfect mix of insecurity and confidence that creates an engaging main character, and allows for the development of poignant relationships with the people surrounding her. By the fifth page, I wanted to meet her. By the last page, I wanted to be her friend. I highly recommend this book!

Does cliche-angsty sophomore really learn lessons?.......2006-06-19

That was my question when I finished this novel about a 10th grade girl who makes a bet with her old childhood friend to see whether or not she can break into the "Coolies" (what a lame name) at her new liberal arts school in New York. She seems to succeed in busting into their group, meanwhile discovering that there's more to them than their stereotypical characterizations. However, throughout the book she snubs a girl who appears to be "cool" but really isn't compared to her chic new bohemian friends. Even when the not-cool girl finds out about her transgressions, she still accepts her and attempts to befriend her. Mimi, the main character, uses her to fill up space in her empty life when her secret is exposed but in the end, when her friends give her another chance, she blows off this girl once again for the more desirable "Coolies." So while the reader is supposed to understand that Mimi is repentant and her friends are understanding, I think Mimi has a long way to go character-wise in her dealings with the people that she deems not worthy.

Brilliant Debut Novel.......2006-05-30

I'm twice the age of the target audience (and male) but I devoured this in a single sitting. Best debut since Goodbye Columbus. I forever have a window into the soul of the teenage female (and i like the view!). Laughed so loud I disturbed my Brooklyn neighbors. It's the antidote to "Kids". Highly recommended for all ages and genders!

If you like the Gossip Girl Series, then you will love this book.

MimiDeals with being the new kid at her new school in New York after her parents get divorced and she moves from Texas to live with her father. Follow her on her journey as she gets picked up dropped and picked up by the "A list" girls in the tenth grade.

Like I said, its similar to Gossip Girls, both are great reads for girls in thier mid to upper teens.

Effect of hexavalent chromium (Cr^6^+) was seen on Brassica juncea cv. Pusa Jaikisan grown for 15 days in hydroponic culture supplemented with 0.2, 2 and 20@mM Cr. The inhibitory response of Cr^6^+ on growth of B. juncea was concentration and time dependent. The stimulation of plant growth, observed in response to exposure to 0.2@mM Cr^6^+, during initial 5 days was reversed on prolonged treatment and at higher Cr^6^+ concentrations (2 and 20@mM Cr^6^+). Despite reduction in growth, chlorophyll content increased substantially on 15 days exposure to 20@mM Cr^6^+. Significant increases in lipid peroxidation and tissue concentration of H"2O"2 occurred in plants exposed to 2 and 20@mM Cr^6^+. Effect of Cr^6^+ on antioxidative enzymes in roots and leaves was differential. SOD and CAT activities at lower levels of Cr^6^+ supply remained higher all through the treatment. While APX was very susceptible to excess Cr^6^+, GR and GST increased at elevated levels of Cr^6^+. The results suggested Cr^6^+ induced depression in plant growth of B. juncea to be a function of increased cellular accumulation of Cr despite increase in the activities of some of the antioxidative enzymes.

Bacopa monnieri L. plants exposed to 10, 50, 100 and 200@mM cadmium (Cd) for 48, 96 and 144h were analysed with reference to the accumulation of metal and its influence on various enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), photosynthetic pigments and protein content. The accumulation of Cd was found to be increased in a concentration and duration dependent manner with more Cd being accumulated in the root. TBARS content of the treated roots and leaves increased with increase in Cd concentration and exposure periods, indicating the occurrence of oxidative stress. Induction in the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and guiacol peroxidase (GPX) was recorded in metal treated roots and leaves of B. monnieri. In contrast, a significant reduction in catalase activity in Cd treated B. monnieri was observed. An increase was also noted in the levels of cysteine and non-protein thiol contents of the roots of B. monnieri followed by a decline. However, in leaves, cysteine and non-protein thiol contents were found to be enhanced at all the Cd concentrations and exposure periods. A significant reduction in the level of ascorbic acid was observed in a concentration and duration dependent manner. The total chlorophyll and protein content of B. monnieri decreased with increase in Cd concentration at all the exposure periods. Results suggest that toxic concentrations of Cd caused oxidative damage as evidenced by increased lipid peroxidation and decreased chlorophyll and protein contents. However, B. monnieri is able to combat metal induced oxidative injury involving a mechanism of activation of various enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants.

Due to its wide industrial use, chromium is considered a serious environmental pollutant. Contamination of soil and water by chromium (Cr) is of recent concern. Toxicity of Cr to plants depends on its valence state: Cr(VI) is highly toxic and mobile whereas Cr(III) is less toxic. Since plants lack a specific transport system for Cr, it is taken up by carriers of essential ions such as sulfate or iron. Toxic effects of Cr on plant growth and development include alterations in the germination process as well as in the growth of roots, stems and leaves, which may affect total dry matter production and yield. Cr also causes deleterious effects on plant physiological processes such as photosynthesis, water relations and mineral nutrition. Metabolic alterations by Cr exposure have also been described in plants either by a direct effect on enzymes or other metabolites or by its ability to generate reactive oxygen species which may cause oxidative stress. The potential of plants with the capacity to accumulate or to stabilize Cr compounds for bioremediation of Cr contamination has gained interest in recent years.

An azo dye, acid orange 7 (AO7), was selected to study the role of Phragmites australis (P. australis) peroxidases (POD) activity in its degradation in a vertical flow constructed wetland (VFCW). Crude plant extract was found to degrade AO7 and its aromatic amines, after 120h in contact with H"2O"2, and removals of 3.2-5.7mg"A"O"7g"P"."a"u"s"t"r"a"l"i"s^-^1 were obtained for 40mg"A"O"7l^-^1 (8mg"A"O"7g"P"."a"u"s"t"r"a"l"i"s^-^1). The VFCW was found to be suitable to treat an effluent containing an azo dye. For influent concentrations of 130mg"A"O"7l^-^1 POD activity increased 2.1-, 4.3- and 12.9-fold for leaves, stems and roots, respectively. At 700mg"A"O"7l^-^1, inhibition of POD activity occurred immediately, but it returned to the previous levels after only 2 days. An AO7 organic load of 21 up to 105gCODm^2day^-^1, revealed non-toxicity, being expectable to achieve removals of 11 up to 67gCODm^2day^-^1. Both [AO7] and TOC removal efficiencies were found to be similar (approximately 70%), which is indicative of AO7 mineralization. A 3h cycle was found to be sufficient to degrade AO7 and a system buffering capacity from 5 to 25mincycle^-^1 was demonstrated by flooding level control.
