Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly good updated version of a classic travel series.......2002-12-15
The Baedeker guides are less well known in America than they deserve to be. They are harder to find in bookstores than the very good Rough guide or Michelin Green guide series or the awful Fodor series.
This guidebook very pleasantly surprised me. There is a wealth of information here with profuse colour illustrations and details I haven't seen in other guidebooks. The book provides excellent in-depth supplemental information in the Baedeker's special sections. In this book there are helpful sidebars about the Mafia and the famous tonnara off Favignana (refereed to here as the "mattanza.") The small mountain town of Corleone made famous in the Godfather movies is nowhere to be found in other guidebooks but is given ample attention here. The fabulous Norman sites of Palermo are described in great detail. I was inspired to read John Julius Norwich's excellent history "The Normans in Sicily" by the information presented in this book. The short lived Norman dynasty of the 11th and 12th century left monuments in Sicily and especially Palermo that are still important features today. William the Conqueror's (Guillame le Conquerant) half brother Otho, bishop of Bayeux (who commissioned the Bayeux tapestry) came to Sicily after falling out of power in England. He died in Palermo in 1097 enroute to participating in the first Crusade.
The guide gives well-deserved great detail to the fabulous Greek ruins of Sicily. I became less satisfied with my other Sicily guides after seeing all that they left out compared to this book. The Baedeker guide is a pocket sized 16mo and comes with a plastic jacket and a small map that is inadequate for driving directions but okay for familiarizing yourself with the geography.

Book Description
A young Chicano family places all its dreams for the future on a golden cockroach.
Children on a Chippewa reservation carve a tribal trickster from a block of ice in the middle of July.
A young black woman with a gift for preaching decides she'll fly on Sunday at the Perfect Peace Baptist Church.
Written by such distinguished authors as Maxine Hong Kingston, Lois Lowry, Gary Soto, and Joyce Carol Thomas, the short stories in this collection are a celebration of diversity--a tribute to the races and cultures that make up America. Here are exquisitely crafted fables and fantasies, surprising turns of plots, intricate patterns, and powerful rhythms that take the reader from rural Oklahoma to a Chicago Latino barrio, from an East Coast neighborhood to urban San Francisco, and beyond. Here are stories that illuminate the glory, the splendor, the achings and failings of young people growing up across the country--and that address what it is truly like to be ethnic and American.
"Readers are treated to the cultural richness of [eleven] stories depicting the frustrations and celebrations of young people in the United States: Native Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, White Americans, and Japanese Americans." EJ. "The collection is rich and colorful, containing strong individual voices. A subtle and sophisticated assortment, dominated by an appealing honesty and authenticity." C.

A Gathering of Heartfelt Voices.......2000-07-10
Despite the "young adults" label on the book, A Gathering of Flowers is for all ages. Some of the best fiction writers working today have contributed a diverse set of short stories in all uniquely pitched, heart-felt voices without pretension and grand gestering. This collection is probably one of the best anthologies available to the young (and older) today, especially if you're looking for works by writers of various ethnicities (as perhaps the "flowers" in the title suggests: different types and colors).
Short not Sweet.......2000-05-30
I read this book on a school assignment and was disapointed to find that this collection of stories wasn't a very good collection. I didn't really enjoy the first story which made me think that the rest of the book may be unamusing as well, and I was not decieved. This book had a collection of stories that didn't compliment each other. There were only a few stories I found worthy of my reading time. All in all I would not reccomend this book in the full, but a few of the stories may be worth a glance.

Really needs to be taken seriously.......2005-04-04
I doubt many of the other reviewers here who gave this book 1 star actually read the whole book. Kathryn Paxton George realizes that humans and esspecially women lose when a pro-animal rights agenda is forced on them. She picks up on the conflict between animal rights and humanist feminism. Veganism is ideal for a healthy adult male, but is difficult in practice for women and child, esspecially in the third world. Veganism requires a complex and well planned diet to work. Unfortunately many don't have access to these resources. Read the book, she presents actual science. Kathryn Paxton George understands veganism is healthy and that animal products are not environmentally sound, but opposes the tying of the feminist agenda with the vegan agenda. Feminism is an easier goal than worldwide veganism and should be applied before we even think of such. You can support both agendas and agree they should not be wedded.
great overview of vegetarian philosophy w/great critique.......2005-03-26
I bought this book because I have a passionately vegetarian friend who is constantly shaming me because I eat meat. She claimed I was ignorant and if I only knew what she did then I would change my mind. She even told me she was a fundamentally better person than I was because of her vegetarianism. I bought this book in self defense. It is hard to find a book that argues the real IMPLICATIONS both philsophical and practical of vegetarianism. I find that those vegetarians who are constantly imposing their views upon others really don't understand the issues very well, meaning that they are making moral arguments without understanding what it means to make a moral argument. George talks about how moral vegetarianism smacks of sexism, racism, and classism. I think she makes very cogent arguments on all of those points. She IS very intelligent and a professor of this stuff, so attempts to dismiss her arguments should be strongly scrutinized! This doesn't mean that vegetarians ARE bad people. IT means that when we actually think about the implications of a seemingly unassailable idea that one shouldn't eat animals, it turns out that there are many ideological inconsistencies. But this book also has good pratical application--it's not too tangled in abstract philosophy. IN the end George comes up with a good compromise that respects the dignity and needs of *all* living creatures, human and animal alike. See vegetarians and carnivores CAN get along...
Puh-LEASE help Kathryn George see the light!.......2003-10-30
This book is utter hogwash. George irrationally attempts to a imply that you are either feminist OR you eat meat. Unfortunately for her, eating meat and feminism (as well as civil rights, etc) fall under the same holistic philsophy that life is either respectable and that all beings should be free to walk their own path. I repeat, other species, colors, genders, nationalities, etc, are NOT here for the misuse and abuse of an elite few or collective many. She is no better than the bureaucracy that shamefully denied women (and blacks) rights when insinuating that women are "above" other sentient beings. I got news for George: she's an animal, too! And anyone with a clue about nutrition knows that meat and dairy products are abominable, causing disease and stress on the human body, ESPECIALLY the pregnant woman. Check out the health statistics and reports at any medical school library, in any compendium of studies - there is not one shred of evidence that dairy is or has ever been helpful! In fact, there are pages illustrating the heinous damage it wreaks on the human system. Why? Because no other animal nurses off another animal, that's absurd! And no other animal ingests milk after weening....Unfortunately once again for George, it is hard to take a feminist seriously if she can turn around and repeat the same horrors inflicted against female human animals on other animals in the animal kingdom. What a joke. Save your money and buy some Carol Adams or somebody reputable.....
Where's the logic ?.......2002-03-21
This is a poorly constructed thesis and serves only to display the typical weak minded headonism of carnivores. Perhaps a person so simple could only serve one cause. I would also recommend ignoring the false information provided regarding health issues of veganism.
An absolutely absurd thesis.......2001-10-10
There are some ethicists who seem to operate on a crude hydraulic model of ethical concern, which has as its primary assumption the belief that you can't be concerned with more than one kind of injustice without dissipating valuable energy. This is the underlying presumption behind George's "Animal, Vegetable, or Woman." She claims that to be concerned with giving animals moral concern takes away moral concern for women--as if the two are mutually exclusive. She ridiculously claims that pregnant women need to eat meat or consume dairy products to ensure the health of their fetuses (jeez, where does she get this nonsense from!?) and that consequently moral defences of vegetarianism are anti-woman. Never mind that Peter Singer has made a career from comparing speciesism to sexism, or that careful and profoundly feminist vegetarians such as Carol Adams or Deane Curtin think otherwise. It's difficult to figure out if George's primary motive is to trash vegetarianism or defend a strangely unfeminist woman-uber-alles kind of position. A shameful book.

Book Description
The vigorous development of the internet and other information technologies have significantly expanded the amount and variety of sources of information available on decision making. This book presents the current trends of soft computing applications to the fields of measurements and information acquisition. Main topics are the production and presentation of information including multimedia, virtual environment, and computer animation as well as the improvement of decisions made on the basis of this information in various applications ranging from engineering to business. In order to make high-quality decisions, one has to fuse information of different kinds from a variety of sources with differing degrees of reliability and uncertainty. The necessity to use intelligent methodologies in the analysis of such systems is demonstrated as well as the inspiring relation of computational intelligence to its natural counterpart. This book includes several contributions demonstrating a further movement towards the interdisciplinary collaboration of the biological and computer sciences with examples from biology and robotics.
Book Description
This generously annotated edition of Coriolanus offers a thorough reconsideration of Shakespeare's remarkable, and probably his last, tragedy. A substantial introduction situates the play within its contemporary social and political contexts and presents a fresh account of how the protagonist's personal tragedy evolves within Shakespeare's most searching exploration of the political life of a community. The edition is alert throughout to the play's theatrical potential, while the stage history also attends to the politics of performance from the 1680s to the 1990s, including European productions following the Second World War.

Shakespeare's Last Tragedy: An Overlooked Gem!!!.......2006-05-25
+++++
This play, written circa 1608, is the last of William Shakespeare's (1564 to 1616) eleven (some say ten) known tragedies. Even though it is known as a "Roman" or "political" play, serious readers will discover that it so much more. I found that it stayed with me long after I read it.
This play is set in ancient Rome. It is essentially the story of warrior Caius Marcius (later known as "Coriolanus") whose honor, pride, and sense of social rank dominates his life and interferes with his ability to function effectively when he's not on the battlefield.
One of the great attributes of this play is that it does not have many characters and thus is easy to follow. The major characters are as follows:
(1) Coriolanus (originally Caius Marcius): a valiant warrior and patrician (nobleman) with a non-overbearing wife. "A soldier to Cato's wish" and a modest hero who "hath deserved worthily of his country" but who lacks tact and refuses to placate "the mutable, rank-scented many."
(2) Volumnia: his overbearing mother. "In anger, Juno-like."
(3) Menenius Agrippa: "a humorous patrician" and an old and true friend of Coriolanus who is trusted by the plebeians (lower class)
(4) Titus Lartius and Cominius: fellow generals with Coriolanus.
(5) Sicinius and Brutus: tribunes (representatives of the plebeians) of the common people and Coriolanus' political enemies. "A pair of strange ones."
(6) Tullus Aufidius: general of Rome's enemies and rival in glory to Coriolanus.
This "Shakespeare PELican" book (published by Penguin in 1999) has some interesting material before the play proper. I found the introduction to the play especially informative.
I would recommend, in order to get the full impact of this play, to either see it on film (the BBC production is excellent) or to see it on the stage.
Finally, I cannot understand why this play has been overlooked as one of Shakespeare's great works. (It was, in fact, written during Shakespeare's greatest period, 1599 to 1608.) The story itself is interesting with many subtle themes. The only thing I can think of is that there are some terms that you must know to properly understand the play (such as patrician, plebeian, tribune, etc.). These terms can be easily looked up in a good dictionary.
In conclusion, this play, in my opinion, is an overlooked gem. This book published by Penguin is an excellent resource for students, teachers, theatre professionals, and anyone interested in discovering this great play!!

rugged shakespeare.......2005-08-21
I had an overpriced Arden Shakespeare copy of the play. The spine broke. I have known Oxford was as good for lower price and prefer the notes. The Arden text is more authoritative but the physical (Oxford) book is better.
Fine Edition of Interesting Play.......2003-03-30
This inexpensive volume is a fine edition with very readable text, good notes, and a nice introduction. Coriolanus is not one of Shakespeare's most popular plays, though it has its partisans. As with several of Shakespeare's best plays, it is an attempt to combine an investigation of the nature of power with a psychological portrait. The nature of power or kingship was one of Shakespeare's great themes, featured in some of the great tragedies like MacBeth or Lear, and this theme runs through many of his history plays. In Coriolanus, however, this theme is handled less well. It is interesting to speculate why Shakespeare, who dealt with this theme so well in many plays, doesn't do such a good job in Coriolanus. The action in Coriolanus is set in a republic, not a monarchy. The structure of republican politics is not one Shakespeare would have known well and the problems of politics and authority in a republican are different than those of a monarchy. Particularly for modern audiences, whose intrinsic understanding of republican politics is much greater than Shakespeare's, the clumsy handling of the tension between the aristocratic Coriolanus and the plebes rings false. In addition, the psychological portrait of Coriolanus is not nearly as rich as Shakespeare's analysis of quite a few of his other protagonists. Much of the language in Coriolanus is powerful but it lacks the dramatic movement and insight of his best work.
a late tragedy--by no means a great one.......2002-05-23
Coriolanus seems to have the critical imprimatur as one of Shakespeare's greatest tragedies. Yet, this must be a misprint. Latest? Certainly. Greatest? Hardly.
For one thing, anyone with any familiarity with Shakespeare's plays must immediately note the protagonist's lack of humanity. Coriolanus' heartlessness is his chief characteristic. All the things that make him so compelling on the battlefield only serve to dull his appeal as a civilian. Since Coriolanus spends the majority of the play as a civilian, this is bad news for the audience.
There may well be tragic events in Coriolanus. However, Coriolanus falls short of great Shakespearean tragedy. The lead is not exceptional (as are the rest of Shakespeare's tragic heroes). At best, Coriolanus is a dolt who becomes a savant on the battlefield. Shakespeare telegraphs, rather than foreshadows, the tragic events of Coriolanus. This, compounded with Coriolanus' inability to carry the play, makes for a rather frenzied mush of a drama.
I recommend Coriolanus only to the Shakespearean completist. It is not one of his better works.
Shakespeare's Greatest Tragedy.......2002-01-14
This is Shakespeare's greatest tragedy in my opinion. Everybody talks about Macbeth, Hamlet, King Lear, Othello, and Romeo and Juliet, but Coriolanus for some reason is mostly, and unjustly, ignored. I feel that Coriolanus is the only pure tragedy among Shakespeare's works. Macbeth was a sociopath who brought all his troubles on himself; Hamlet was a confused young man who couldn't make a decision and who waited too long to get the job done; King Lear was an old fool who played games with his daughters and brought most of his problems on himself; Othello could have avoided his problems if he simply sat down and had a real conversation with his wife; and Romeo and Juliet were just a couple of immature kids who simply needed a few hard kicks in their butts. Coriolanus is different. Coriolanus was simply an honest, hard-working soldier who got the job done and told the truth, but was brought down by the guile of his enemies. That, in my opinion, is the greatest tragedy of them all.
It seems that people either love or hate this play. Many consider Coriolanus to be a very unlikable character because he is supposedly arrogant, but I disagree. Coriolanus just worked hard, told the truth, was a straight shooter, and refused to play silly games by telling people what they wanted to hear. I guess I see something different in this play than most critics and readers of Shakespeare.

Book Description
A military hero of ancient Rome who attempts to shift from his career as a general to become a candidate for public office — a disastrous move that leads to his heading an attack on Rome. The last of Shakespeare's tragedies, Coriolanus is a timeless tale of pride, revenge, and political chicanery.
Customer Reviews:
VASTLY underrated........2006-05-15
This is one of those Shakespearean plays that very few casual readers know of; it is not, generally, a play that is required reading in any but the most in-depth literature courses, and most people have never heard of it or know of it only by title. This is truly a shame, because it is one of Shakespeares BEST works. It is the story of a man too honorable for his own good, who loses all due to the conniving of clever politicians because he refuses to play the game by their rules and flatter the people with weasel-words and empty promises. Truly, a wonderful story with a far better plot than most of Shakespeare's plays, and language just as musical as any of them. If you've read Shakespeare's better-known plays and enjoyed the language, do yourself a favor and make yourself familiar with this lesser-known play.
